Former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has slammed the club’s board as their ongoing financial problems threaten to derail Lionel Messi’s comeback.

Barcelona manager Xavi has finally broken his silence on Gerard Pique’s retirement, as he hailed his fellow Barca legend’s decision to retire as a ‘gesture of spectacular greatness’.

On Thursday, Pique announced the end of his impressive career and revealed he would retire from football after this month’s LaLiga break for the World Cup.

Pique, 35, said in a video posted on social media that Saturday’s league clash with Almeria will be his last at Barcelona’s Camp Nou after 14 years with the Catalan giants following his return from Manchester United in 2008.

The World Cup winner has a contract with Barcelona until 2024 but he will renounce the remaining year and a half of his salary, La Vanguardia newspaper reported.

The decision will help Barcelona improve their financial fair play margin since Pique is among their best-paid players.

Reacting to the decision of his former teammate, Xavi, now Barcelona’s manager, said: ‘Pique is a player who still has a contract and who could have continued at the club, so his gesture shows spectacular greatness.

The 35-year-old has made 615 appearances for Barcelona and has taken home three Champions League and eight La Liga trophies. With Spain, he also won the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championship.

The defender won the Premier League and the Champions League while playing for Manchester United between the time he began his football career at Barcelona and the time he returned in 2008.
