Chelsea forward Cole Palmer feels that the Blues have received unwarranted criticism when Gary Neville called them “billion pound bottlejobs” following last month’s Carabao Cup final.

The ages of some Liverpool players were the subject of much discussion. Jurgen Klopp had to rely on several adolescents since injured stars like Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szobozlai could not participate.

However, Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea team, which is still struggling in the lower part of the Premier League standings, isn’t exactly full of experienced veterans. Raheem Sterling, who is 29 years old, was by far the oldest player among the 15 players who played at Wembley; eight of them were 23 years old or younger. With Thiago Silva out due to injury, the only outfield player in the entire squad who is older than thirty is him.

Palmer contends that a lack of quality is not the cause of Chelsea’s issues.

“I feel like we’re good enough,” he told i. “We’re young, but we’re good players. So once we gel, we’ll be alright. Try and get to another final in the FA Cup, push as high in the league as we can, and keep going game by game and getting the team to gel.”

Palmer himself is only 21 and the £42.5m price tag for a player with only 41 first-team games under his belt at the time of his transfer from Manchester City raised eyebrows.

“I didn’t even think about the fee when I moved,” he continued. “I just thought, ‘everyone’s talking about the fee, but they’ve not even seen me play’. They’ve seen me play a few times but no one’s actually seen me play. So I didn’t really listen to it. I didn’t know how it was going to go when I came here but to get the opportunity to play every week, that’s why I came – for game time.”

Old Trafford was nicknamed the “Theatre of Nothing” by Gary Neville following Manchester United’s disastrous Carabao Cup elimination against Newcastle United.

The Magpies humiliated the Red Devils 3-0, scoring goals through Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall, and Joe Willock. On Wednesday night, they spectacularly exacted revenge for their Carabao Cup final loss to United the previous season.

In the past, Neville has stood up for Erik ten Hag in spite of the team’s poor performance and the uncertainty surrounding the club’s ongoing selling process.

But after suffering a 3-0 thumping at the hands of fierce rivals Manchester City last weekend, the former United defender says he has “had enough” and took his wrath out on X.

“Last night we saw the Theatre of Dreams turn into the Theatre of Nothing,” he wrote on the social media platform. “Every single United fan is bored and flat. On the pitch the players were in shock, the performances woeful and a manager struggling in front of our eyes. We’ve seen it before, we know how it ends and we’ve had enough.”

Neville contrasted the difference in management at Newcastle and the lack of it at United to explain the gulf in quality between the two sides on the pitch. The ex-England international lavished praise on Dan Ashworth, who is working as sporting director at St. James Park.

“On my way up to the gantry last night, I bumped into Dan Ashworth. He transformed the FA’s structure, set Brighton up for this incredible period of success and has now built a strong foundation for the new owners at Newcastle,” he said.

“He’s competent, highly qualified and knows what he’s doing. Will work with his coach, recruitment team and other departments coherently and calmly. In the last two matches, Manchester United have played two clubs that have installed proper football departments to support the team on the pitch and off it.

The complete opposite of United. We haven’t got a sporting director! I used to travel up to Newcastle and feel sorry for their great fans when the energy and enthusiasm had been sapped from them under Mike Ashley. It was painful to see.”

At Craven Cottage, United will play Fulham in their Premier League opener on Saturday.

The last team Walcott played for was his old club Southampton, although he was let go at the end of the previous campaign. Before joining Arsenal and receiving a surprise call-up to England’s 2006 World Cup within two months of turning 17, he had gained prominence with the Saints when he was just 16 years old.

Despite not having yet made his professional Arsenal debut, Walcott went on to play just under 400 games for the club during a 12-year span, scoring 108 goals and winning two FA Cups.

The attacker joined Everton for more than £20 million in January 2018 after his Arsenal career began to wane. The deal was then made permanent the following year after a 2020 loan to Southampton.

Walcott finally won 47 senior England caps after going uncapped in 2006, which added to the controversy surrounding his questionable selection.

He also registered eight goals, including three against Croatia in September 2008, becoming him the Three Lions’ youngest-ever hat-trick player.

Walcott was injured in 2014 and was unable to compete in the World Cup in 2010. He was chosen for Euro 2012 but not Euro 2016, and his lack of club form caused his international career to end forever that year.

“I’m officially going to be hanging up my boots. It’s very scary, I can’t lie,” Walcott said to former England teammate Gary Neville on The Overlap podcast.

“It’s scary because football’s all I’ve known from the age of 16 or even younger. I want to try new things I never experienced as a kid – I missed out on a lot. I just feel like I want to experience life – things [usually] revolve around football for me.

“I’ve had offers abroad and from some very good Championship teams. There’s been some Saudi offers but it’s not where I see myself playing, to be honest. Nothing against the money or the league but if my heart isn’t into playing football it’s not fair on the clubs, not fair on me.”

Walcott also posted a lengthy video from The Overlap on social media.

“The first moment I put my football boots on aged ten was a special journey for me. From playing in the park with friends to performing in some of the biggest stadiums in front of huge crowds across the world,” he said.

“The support shown to me throughout this time has been incredible and in every way imaginable I am truly grateful. I shared the football pitch with so many incredible players and we have created so many unforgettable memories.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to all the managers and coaches that I’ve worked with, especially Harry [Redknapp] for giving me a start and Arsene [Wenger] for showing the belief and supporting me when I joined the club at only 16 years old. Over 18 fantastic years in the Premier League, there are so many moments I will cherish.

“The early days at Southampton Football Club, my transfer to Arsenal where I spent 12 enjoyable years and scored over 100 goals, winning the FA Cup and scoring in the final which is every kid’s dream. To have had the opportunity to represent England 47 times and to go to the World Cup in 2006 aged just 17 and still to hold the record for the youngest-ever debut by a senior England player and the youngest hat-trick goalscorer at 19 – I will never forget that feeling.

“I’m lucky enough to have had offers to continue playing but it feels right to finish where I started and hang up my football boots. Thank you to everyone who has been with me along the way.”

Former Tottenham Hotspur player, Dele Alli has been the topic of discussion ever since Gary Neville’s interview with him was made public online.

The mother of the player had an interview with the Sun where she responded to her son’s revelation about him being molested as a child by one of her friends.

Dele Alli admitted to being molested as a child when he was 6 years old by one of his mother’s friends in an interview with the Overlap.

He said: “At six I was molested by my mum’s friend who was at the house a lot, my mum was an alcoholic. So that happened at six. I was sent to Africa to learn discipline, and then I was sent back. At seven I started smoking, at eight I started dealing drugs”.

She stated that she was unaware of the difficult upbringing her son had experienced and claimed that she has been crying nonstop since he gave the interview.

“I have not been able to stop crying since I heard my son describe the abuse he suffered as a child. I had no idea he’d been molested. I’m so sorry. It breaks my heart to think that someone I allowed into my house might have betrayed my trust in the worst possible way. I cannot put into words how upset I am I no longer have contact with my son and only hope I will have the chance to see him again”.

The 27-year-old’s football career flourished at Tottenham Hotspur while Mauricio Pochettino was the club’s manager, but he has found it difficult to adjust since the Argentine departed the team.

During Manchester United’s win over Aston Villa, Gary Neville urged Bruno Fernandes to “take on board” Jadon Sancho’s “just stop moaning” criticism.

Fernandes scored United’s first goal in the 39th minute after Emiliano Martinez spilt Marcus Rashford’s attempt on goal, which proved to be the difference between the two teams.

The Red Devils got off to a fast start and created many chances in the first half. However, one of the moves failed to materialize, leaving Fernandes frustrated and pointing the finger of blame at Sancho. However, the winger was seen snapping back at his captain and saying “stop moaning” before continuing the game.

On this specific occasion, United great Neville has sided with the England international and expressed the hope that Fernandes will “take on board” the criticism in the correct spirit and change his behaviour on the field.

“It sums Bruno Fernandes up. He’s Manchester United’s most effective player, he’s Manchester United’s best player,” the United legend said on The Gary Neville Podcast.

“But I think every Manchester United fan and probably every Manchester United player is thinking: just stop moaning! I moan a lot, but I didn’t do it on the pitch at my own players!

“So that’s probably the perfect summary of Bruno Fernandes. He’s a match-winner, when Manchester United don’t have him in the team they drop levels like you wouldn’t believe – and we’ve seen that recently against Sevilla.

“It’s an important win for Manchester United. Bruno Fernandes is a star. His assists and goals record is incredible from the position that he plays. He always wants the ball, he’s got the courage to take the ball, he always fights for everything in a game. But maybe one of his teammates or two do need to tell him to stop moaning now and then, and that probably to be fair is something he will take on board.”

For similar behaviour on the field, Fernandes has also received criticism in the past. He let his emotions get the best of him during United’s 7-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield and was seen berating his teammates during the second-half downfall. On that occasion as too, Neville had called the midfielder’s actions a “disgrace” and lashed out at him.

Gary Neville believes Graham Potter would be happy to leave Chelsea and claims that ex-Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is the man to replace him.

Less than seven months after taking over at Stamford Bridge, Potter was fired on Sunday night. The team was 11th in the standings following a dismal home loss to Aston Villa.

The odds were never in the English manager’s favour as he battled to gain the fans’ respect, win over his players, and work with the club’s new ownership, who were implementing dramatic and extensive changes behind the scenes.

Just 12 victories in 31 games was a poor record on the field, but Neville believes that Potter will be happy to have left a club in disarray since that is where the real damage appears to have been done.

The Manchester United legend told Sky Sports: ‘Graham Potter is a good man. He’ll have gone home after he was sacked and I bet there was an element of relief.

‘I don’t think he was enjoying it there, I bet he will have thought it was mad.

‘What he has been used to in terms of what his view of football is, he will have seen what is going on behind the scenes – they lost Petr Cech and Marina Granovskaia at the start of the season, that wasn’t planned.

‘They lost [Thomas] Tuchel, that wasn’t planned. He has come into a club that is in massive transition, they [Todd Boehly and co.] have paid millions of pounds, they don’t know what they are doing to be fair, they are learning on the job.

‘He’ll probably think, “These lot are mad”, and actually I suspect that Graham Potter has gone to Winstanley and said, “Get me out of here”.’

Now the question of who will succeed Potter is in focus. The early front-runner is ex-Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann, while Pochettino, ex-Barcelona manager Luis Enrique, and Napoli’s Luciano Spalletti are all on the extremely lengthy shortlist.

Neville believes that Pochettino, who has been unemployed since leaving PSG last summer, is the ideal candidate for the position since the Argentinean won’t be careless when it comes to making fresh player signings.

He added: ‘Everything Chelsea is saying and Boehly is saying is that they have spent £600million and they have done their spending apart from a centre-forward for the next three years.

‘If they sign [Zinedine] Zidane, [Diego] Simeone, Enrique, they are going to want another £300m because they won’t like some of the players they have signed.

The Premier League has announced a 15-player shortlist of nominees for the Hall of Fame class of 2023.

Three of the players who were shortlisted will join 16 other players who have already been inducted into the Hall of Fame, according to the Premier League, which earlier this week announced that Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger had become the first managers to be inducted.

Arsenal legends Tony Adams and Sol Campbell, Manchester United legends Andy Cole, Gary Neville, and Rio Ferdinand, former Chelsea and England captain John Terry, and one of Manchester City’s most admired players, Yaya Toure, are among the contenders for the 2023 Hall of Fame class.

Fans can vote for the three players – who are only eligible if they retired before the start of the year – they want to enter the Hall of Fame, with the winning players set to be announced on Wednesday 3rd May.

Gary Neville acknowledges that Casemiro has been “devastating” for Manchester United, but he doesn’t believe the £70 million man was a “smart signing.”

This summer, the Brazilian completed a massive £70 million ($84 million) transfer from Real Madrid to United, becoming their sixth-most expensive signing ever. Although having trouble at first adjusting to life in England, Casemiro has cemented himself as a key player in Erik ten Hag’s starting lineup.

He has also contributed a couple of goals, one of which was in United’s victory over Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final.

While Neville admits the 31-year-old has had a significant influence at Old Trafford, he still thinks the club’s hefty investment in the ageing midfielder was misguided. Instead, he desires that his previous team concentrate on more youthful players who are still at the peak of their careers, such as Lisandro Martinez and Antony.

“I feel like Ten Hag is not going to sign [marquee names]. If new owners come in they’re going to want to make a statement, they’ll want to blow the transfer market open. I don’t think that will suit him,” Neville said when discussing United’s potential summer plans on the Sky Sports show The Overlap.

“I think he’ll want those younger, hungrier ones that have still got that growth rather than the finished article. Casemiro obviously defeats that a little bit, but you look at Antony and Lisandro Martinez, they’re younger and hungrier. I think that’s the type of player he’ll want to add to this squad rather than saying, ‘Oh, Kylian Mbappe’s available or so-and-so is available’.

But Casemiro, there’s no doubt – we all said it by the way – £60m? £70m? And £20m-a-year [contract] for five years is a £170m investment. That is a massive investment. It’s not a smart or shrewd signing when you look at it from a [big picture] point of view. None of us thought that. But the impact he’s having in the short term and what Manchester United need now, he’s devastating for the club in unbelievable ways.”

Harry Kane of Tottenham has been linked to a transfer to United recently, and while Neville is a great fan of the 29-year-old as well, he has the same concerns about signing him as he had with Casemiro.

“You know something, I’ve worked with him and you watch him. He will score 30 goals, he will get 10-15 assists, and that is an absolute fact,” the United legend added. “He’s a professional, the dressing room will love him, he’ll fit in straight away and he’s a guarantee for Manchester United. But if he’s going to cost £150million and he’s 30, then it’s a short-lived [signing].

“So I think Harry Kane is the type of player who could take you to the title, he is, because he would just connect the whole of the midfield, the top of the pitch, he’ll score goals, the fans will love him, the players will love him and I don’t see how you can go wrong with him.

But the fact of the matter is, for the long term, it wouldn’t be something that worked. He’s got another five years left in his career by the way, so I don’t think there’s a problem with that, it’s just that he is, obviously, in the latter part of his career.”

As United hosts West Ham in the FA Cup on Wednesday, the Brazil international will want to put up another strong performance in midfield.

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has provided a subtle response to Cristiano Ronaldo’s bombshell interview with Piers Morgan and the handshake incident.

Recently, Ronaldo spoke with Piers Morgan Uncensored and critical of United manager Erik ten Hag, ex-teammates Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville, and club owners the Glazer family.

Ronaldo also took aim at United’s young players, claiming that they do not care enough and do not listen to him.

The 37-year-old poked fun at Ralf Ragnick in the interview, received a £1 million fine, and an alleged unpleasant encounter with United and Portugal teammate Fernandes went viral as the two began their World Cup journey on Monday.

Quizzed about that incident as well as Ronaldo’s remarks, Fernandes told Sky Sports:

‘I didn’t read the interview.

‘As I said before, now it’s the national team. It’s Portugal. The coach made a point that it’s us. He made that point since I came to the national team in 2017. That is still clear. In his mind, the main thing is national team. We have to be focused on the World Cup.

‘Cristiano has done really well to play at five World Cups – this will be his fifth time. Everyone is ready for that and everyone wants the best for the team.’

Asked about the handshake, Fernandes added:

‘I was watching one of the channels that said it was cold and bad.

‘They went on a commercial break, the national team sent them footage with the sound, the sound revealed that he was joking with me. If they explained what was really true in that video, people would know. Manchester United will be my focus after the World Cup.

‘I have no problem with anyone. I do my job. A manager once told me, the only thing you can control is yourself.’
