Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen has revealed that he felt an instant connection with the Turkish giants the moment he touched down in Istanbul.

Victor Osimhen Opens Up on Why He Chose Galatasaray Over Europe’s Big Clubs

The passion of the fans, the atmosphere around the club, and the sense of belonging he experienced even before stepping on the pitch were key factors in his decision.

The Nigerian forward was particularly moved by the support of the Galatasaray faithful. Fans tracked his arrival and spectacularly welcomed him, creating a bond that left a lasting impression. For Osimhen, the emotional connection outweighed any financial considerations or prestige from other clubs.

“When I left Napoli, do you know how many people told me, ‘Do not go to Turkey. Are you crazy?’ A former agent even told me, ‘No, no, no. Don’t go there. It’s not a smart move.’ But I think with my heart. I wanted to play for Galatasaray. I wanted to go to a top three club in the world in terms of passion. Those are the kind of people who really understand me. When I spoke to Okan Buruk on the phone, before I signed, he told me, ‘I’m here to tell you that I personally, as a person and as a coach and as a father, I want you in my club. When the flight landed, there were 3,000 Gala fans waiting for me in the middle of the night. That feeling is worth more than money.”

The 25-year-old also highlighted personal happiness as a major motivator. He described feeling “very happy” at Galatasaray and emphasized the comfort he enjoys both on and off the pitch, something he believes is rare given the constant pressures top footballers face.

Interestingly, Osimhen revealed that he had other significant opportunities, including interest from European heavyweights like Juventus.

Yet, despite the allure of such clubs, he followed his heart, choosing the passion and connection he felt in Istanbul over mere prestige.

For Osimhen, the decision was simple: play where he feels understood, valued, and truly at home.

Now, the real tension begins.

Real Madrid’s reward for edging past Benfica in the playoffs? A heavyweight, two-legged duel against Manchester City. It’s the latest chapter in what’s quickly becoming a modern European rivalry, and one pre-tournament favorite is guaranteed to exit early.

Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain will get a shot at redemption against Chelsea, months after the Blues outclassed them in the Club World Cup final. Expect intensity.

Meanwhile, Barcelona head to St James’ Park for a tricky test against Newcastle United, where the atmosphere alone could tilt the tie.

On another front, Liverpool square off with Galatasaray, while Arsenal, who topped the league phase with a flawless record, must overcome Bayer Leverkusen to keep their ambitious quadruple dream alive.

Bayern Munich, runners-up in the league phase and perennial contenders, face a dangerous Atalanta side that squeezed through thanks to a dramatic late penalty against Borussia Dortmund.

And don’t overlook Atletico Madrid vs. Tottenham Hotspur, a clash that promises tactical warfare.

Full Round of 16 Fixtures

Real Madrid vs. Manchester City

Bodø/Glimt vs. Sporting CP

PSG vs. Chelsea

Newcastle vs. Barcelona

Galatasaray vs. Liverpool

The Nigerian forward found the net in the high-stakes encounter, taking his Champions League tally for the season to seven goals and 13 overall since joining the Istanbul giants.

His goals have been instrumental in Galatasaray’s strong push through the group stage, significantly boosting their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds.

One of the defining moments of Osimhen’s European campaign was his sensational hat trick against Ajax. With that feat, he became only the second Nigerian to score three goals in a single Champions League match, a performance that underlined his clinical finishing and big-game mentality.

His consistency has also etched his name into Galatasaray’s history books. Osimhen became the first player in the club’s history to score braces in back-to-back Champions League matches, joining the ranks of legendary forwards such as Burak Yılmaz, who previously delivered memorable European performances for the club.

On the national front, Osimhen’s achievements carry even greater significance. He surpassed the long-standing Champions League goal record held by Obafemi Martins, officially becoming Nigeria’s highest-scoring player in the competition.

With decisive goals, historic milestones, and commanding displays in crucial fixtures, Osimhen continues to cement his status as one of the most influential African forwards in European football today.

Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen is proving once again why he deserves a place among the world’s top three forwards after another electrifying performance in the UEFA Champions League.

The Nigerian striker stole the spotlight with a stunning hat trick against Ajax, edging closer to Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for most consecutive games with a goal in the competition. Osimhen has now found the back of the net in eight straight Champions League matches, just three shy of Ronaldo’s historic run.

Osimhen’s form in Europe this season has been nothing short of sensational. In Galatasaray’s 1-0 win over Liverpool in Istanbul, he coolly converted a penalty in the 16th minute, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way. That goal wasn’t just the match-winner — it also marked a historic milestone, as he became the first Nigerian player to reach double digits in Champions League goals, with 10 strikes to his name in the tournament proper.

Barely a week later, Osimhen continued his hot streak, scoring twice in a 3-1 victory over Bodø/Glimt. The result not only secured Galatasaray their first back-to-back Champions League wins in nearly ten years but also saw the 26-year-old break the club’s record for most consecutive European games with a goal.

With his relentless consistency, Osimhen has reignited Galatasaray’s European ambitions and sent a bold message to his critics — he is built for the biggest stages.

The Lagos-born striker has now cemented his place in Nigerian football history, becoming the country’s all-time top scorer in UEFA club competitions with 25 goals, surpassing Obafemi Martins’ tally of 23.

Currently, Osimhen sits atop the Champions League scoring chart with six goals, despite missing his team’s opening group game yet another testament to his class, hunger, and knack for rising to the occasion.

Turkish giants Galatasaray have made headlines across Europe after completing the historic permanent signing of Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen from Napoli in a blockbuster deal, reportedly worth €75 million, shattering the Turkish Super Lig’s all-time transfer record.

The move was finalised on Wednesday evening, July 30, 2025, following intense negotiations with Napoli officials in Milan, culminating in an agreement that surpasses the previous transfer record of €20 million, set during Youssef En-Nesyri’s switch to Fenerbahçe in 2024.

Despite strong competition from several European clubs and Saudi Arabian powerhouse Al Hilal, Osimhen opted for a return to Istanbul, citing his connection with the Galatasaray fans and his desire to build on last season’s success.

The 26-year-old forward spent the 2024/25 campaign on loan at Galatasaray, where he enjoyed a phenomenal run, guiding the club to a league and cup double while emerging as Super Lig’s top scorer with 26 goals. He also set a new record for the most goals in a single season by a foreign player, netting 36 goals across all competitions.

Osimhen’s arrival in Istanbul around 7:00 PM CET was widely publicized, with Galatasaray providing live updates on social media. One of them is flight tracking—a move that demonstrated just how pivotal the signing is for the club’s ambitions.

During his time with Napoli, the forward etched his name in Italian football history by helping the club lift the 2022/23 Serie A title, their first in 33 years, scoring 26 goals and providing 4 assists that season. However, tensions reportedly surfaced between Osimhen and the Napoli hierarchy the following year, which paved the way for Galatasaray to swoop in with a loan offer.

The love affair between Osimhen and Galatasaray fans blossomed rapidly, with his passion, work ethic, and clinical finishing winning hearts across Turkey. His permanent return is seen not only as a monumental signing but also as a statement of intent by the reigning Turkish champions as they aim to dominate both domestically and in European competitions.

With his legacy at Galatasaray already growing, Osimhen now looks set to elevate his impact on Turkish football to legendary status.

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen is on the brink of completing a historic move to Turkish giants Galatasaray, as final discussions with Napoli enter the last lap.

According to Turkish outlet TRT Spor, Galatasaray head coach Okan Buruk confirmed that negotiations are progressing smoothly, with only a few formalities remaining before the deal is sealed.

“We’re nearing completion. Everything regarding Osimhen is going positively,” Buruk stated. “The player’s side has already given a green light, and talks with Napoli have also been very positive. We want the transfer wrapped up as soon as possible.”

The landmark deal is expected to cost Galatasaray €75 million in total, with €40 million to be paid upfront and the remaining €35 million structured over installments by 2026.

A key clause in the deal prevents Osimhen from returning to Serie A for the next two years, while Napoli will retain a 10% sell-on fee in any future transfer.

Osimhen’s return to Galatasaray follows a sensational loan spell last season, during which the Nigerian star netted 37 goals in 41 appearances playing a pivotal role in the club’s title triumph. His permanent signing sends a strong message of intent from the Turkish champions ahead of their domestic campaign and UEFA Champions League qualifiers.

Buruk acknowledged that the club’s entire summer strategy has revolved around Osimhen’s signing:

“Our entire transfer situation was about Osimhen. We have a significant budget, and how we allocate it is key. Once this deal is done, we’ll turn our attention to other areas.”

One of those areas is goalkeeping, with Galatasaray looking to replace their long-serving number one, Fernando Muslera. The club is reportedly in advanced talks with Manchester City for Brazilian shot-stopper Ederson.

“We’re very clear about the goalkeeper situation,” Buruk said. “We already have Gunay and Jankat, who showed promise in the friendlies, but we want to bring in one more top-quality keeper.”

To balance the squad and meet the Turkish league’s foreign player quota, several players are expected to depart once the major signings are finalized.

Osimhen is expected to arrive in Istanbul soon to sign a four-year deal and be unveiled officially. With the Turkish Super Lig kicking off on August 8, Galatasaray are hoping to complete all key transfers quickly and present a fully fortified squad ahead of their European campaign.

Fenerbahçe manager Jose Mourinho has broken his silence on the racial allegations leveled against him by Galatasaray, insisting that his comments were misinterpreted and that the accusations have backfired on his accusers.

The controversy arose after Mourinho remarked that the Galatasaray bench was “jumping like monkeys“ while appealing for referee decisions during a heated encounter between the two clubs.

The statement sparked outrage, leading to Galatasaray filing a racial petition against the Portuguese coach.

Jose Mourinho Addresses Racism Allegations from Galatasaray

Speaking to Sky Sports, Mourinho dismissed the allegations, emphasizing his long-standing relationships with African players and charities.

“They were not clever in the way they attacked me because they didn’t know my past. They didn’t know my connections with Africa, with African people, African players, and African charities.”

Mourinho pointed out that the allegations ultimately worked against Galatasaray, as several of his former players—including Didier Drogba and Michael Essien—came to his defense.

“Instead of going against me, I think it boomeranged and went against them. Everyone knows who I am as a person. Everybody knows my bad qualities, but racism is not one of them. Exactly the opposite! The most important thing is, I know who I am.”

Response to Galatasaray Manager Okan Buruk

Mourinho also took a dig at Galatasaray’s manager, Okan Buruk, criticizing his touchline antics and suggesting that the Turkish club’s actions were an attempt to provoke him.

“I just felt, how could they go so low? I cannot drop to his level. Sometimes I do, and I ask myself, ‘Why did you do it, Jose? Why did you drop to that level?’ It was just sad.”

Mourinho concluded the interview by expressing gratitude to those who defended him, particularly his former players who vouched for his character.

“I thank the people who didn’t have a problem speaking out, especially my boys, my former players. They were a very important voice.”

Initially, Mourinho was handed a four-game touchline ban and a £35,000 fine, but following an appeal, the punishment was reduced to a two-match ban and a £12,200 fine.

The incident has further fueled the already intense rivalry between Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray, with tensions continuing to rise in Turkish football.

Mourinho, known for his outspoken nature, has been vocal about the standard of officiating since taking charge of Fenerbahce earlier this year. His comments have stirred controversy, leading to a decision to assign Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic for Monday’s much-anticipated clash between league leaders Galatasaray and second-placed Fenerbahce. The encounter ended in a goalless stalemate, but post-match tensions have dominated headlines.

While the exact statements that sparked Galatasaray’s outrage remain unclear, Mourinho expressed his dissatisfaction with officiating during his post-match press conference.

“I went to the referee’s dressing room after the game. The fourth official was there—a Turkish referee. I told him if you are the referee, it would be a disaster,” Mourinho remarked.

He also suggested that Galatasaray should advocate for the consistent appointment of foreign referees if they truly believed in their own quality.

“But when the referees are foreign, UEFA Cup—go home. Against us at home—one shot on target. But if they are good and they believe really in themselves and in their power, they should ask the federation,” he added.

Mourinho further criticized Galatasaray’s coaching staff, claiming they were overly theatrical in their protests.

Galatasaray swiftly issued a strong-worded statement condemning Mourinho’s remarks and accusing him of targeting the Turkish people with derogatory language since his arrival in the league.

“Since the commencement of his managerial duties in Turkey, Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has persistently issued derogatory statements directed towards the Turkish people,” the club stated.

“Today, his discourse has escalated beyond merely immoral comments into unequivocally inhumane rhetoric. We hereby formally declare our intention to initiate criminal proceedings concerning the racist statements made by Jose Mourinho and shall accordingly submit official complaints to UEFA and FIFA.”

Additionally, Galatasaray board member Can Natan labeled Mourinho’s comments as offensive, stating they exhibited “a troubling pattern that crosses the borders of racist behavior.”

Fenerbahce, however, dismissed the accusations, insisting Mourinho’s remarks were deliberately misinterpreted.

“A statement made by our technical director Jose Mourinho after the match was completely taken out of context, and an attempt was made to deliberately distort it,” the club responded.

“Trying to portray this statement as racist is a completely malicious approach.”

Amid the escalating controversy, Drogba, who played under Mourinho at Chelsea and also spent time at Galatasaray, voiced his support for the Portuguese tactician.

“Trust me when I tell you I have known Jose for xx years, and he is not a racist, and history (past and recent) is there to prove it,” the 46-year-old wrote on X.

“How can my ‘Dad’ be a racist? Come on, guys,” he concluded.

The saga continues to unfold as Galatasaray pursues legal action while Fenerbahce and Mourinho stand firm in their defense, fueling an already intense rivalry in Turkish football.

Jose Mourinho has openly admitted to having a “problem” with Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen following the forward’s recent move to Galatasaray, fierce rivals of Fenerbahce, where Mourinho is currently managing.

Mourinho’s relationship with Osimhen dates back to their time in Italy’s Serie A, where Mourinho coached AS Roma and Osimhen was a key player for Napoli. Now, with Osimhen making a summer switch to Turkey after potential moves to Chelsea and Al-Ahli fell through, the two will cross paths once again.

While Mourinho acknowledged Osimhen’s immense talent, he pointed out a specific trait that frustrates him when facing the Nigerian star on the pitch. Although he didn’t elaborate on the exact issue, the comment hints at the challenges of managing and competing against a player of Osimhen’s caliber.

“He’s an incredible talent. Galatasaray have secured a fantastic player,” Mourinho said in an interview with HT Spor.

“I’ve never had an issue with him personally, but there’s one thing about him that irritates me when he’s on the opposing team. During one of our Roma-Napoli encounters, I took the time to speak with him.

I told him, ‘You and Salah are currently the best African players, following in the footsteps of legends like Drogba, Eto’o, and Weah. But you cannot continue to play the way you do.’ He tends to go down too easily, and that’s where my problem lies.”

Osimhen’s move to Galatasaray may be short-lived, as sources claim that his loan agreement includes a release option that top European teams may activate as early as the January transfer window.

This implies that the Nigerian may be in England in a few of months after leaving Turkey.

Osimhen is scheduled to make his Turkish Super Lig debut on September 14, when Galatasaray face Rizespor. Just a week later, the striker might face Mourinho’s Fenerbahce.
