Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice has opened up about the “really good friendship” he has built with teammate Gabriel Magalhaes during his initial six months at the club.

Having made a £105 million switch from West Ham United in July, Rice became the most expensive British footballer in history and has swiftly acclimated to the Arsenal dressing room.

Rice counts Oleksandr Zinchenko, Gabriel Jesus, and Aaron Ramsdale among his friends at the club, but he has developed a particularly close bond with Brazilian center-back Gabriel. The camaraderie between players can undoubtedly contribute to team dynamics both on and off the field.

“I’ve formed a lot of really good relationships here,” he told Arsenal.com. “There’s a lot of different cultures and I’m really close with Gabriel Maghalaes – we get on so, so well. We’re both completely different personalities from completely different backgrounds and we play football in a different way too, but we learn so much from each other and we’ve formed a really good friendship.

“I get on with everyone, I talk to everyone and it’s great to have a good relationship with so many different people in the team. I look around and I think these are the people that I want to win stuff with and have a long career with.”

Rice continued by saying that, aside from playing football, golf is his favorite pastime, even though it’s difficult to find other club members to go golfing with.

“We don’t have too many golfers here at Arsenal, but I’ve played a good amount with Rammers,” he explained. “I was able to play a little bit with Rory McIlroy last week in Dubai and that was great fun.

“I think golf is one of the most mentally challenging sports out there. Tennis too because it’s just you and you need to battle through your emotions, whereas in football you’ve got your teammates around you to lift you up or help you out. In tennis or golf the spotlight is entirely on you. No one else is there and it’s one of the toughest things to do, which is why I really respect and admire them.”

Mikel Arteta has acknowledged that Arsenal’s defensive overconfidence contributed to their loss to Manchester City on Wednesday night in the Premier League.

Takehiro Tomiyasu and Gabriel Magalhaes both missed passes in their own defensive third, and as a result, Arsenal lost to City 3-1. City took advantage of both of these errors to score two of their three goals on the night.

When asked on Prime Video if overplaying in and around their own penalty area cost Arsenal in the top-of-the-table clash, manager Arteta replied:

“In certain areas of the pitch, especially after regaining the ball deep, yes. You don’t play there, you have to play a different game and we didn’t read those situations well enough.”

Arteta bemoaned his team’s lost opportunities throughout the game, particularly in the first period when the Gunners dominated play.

“On the other hand we had three big, big chances and we didn’t put them away and that was the difference.

“To beat them we have to be above our level because they are such a good team who have the quality that they have. We absolutely matched them and we had them in big moments but the games are defined with individual moments, especially in the box, and they were better than us there.”

Due to the loss, Arsenal now sits behind Manchester City in the Premier League standings on goal differential. The Gunners will find some comfort in the knowledge that they still have a game left, though.

Arsenal FC have officially unveiled and announced their signing of Polish centre-back Jakub Kiwior from Serie A side Spezia.

The Premier League leaders have agreed to spend almost £20 million to bring Kiwior to the Emirates this month after the 22-year-old made himself a regular in Italy this season.

A move that initially came out of nowhere on Friday has now reached its completion. Kiwior signs on a long-term deal having completed his move from the Serie A side, where he spent one-and-a-half seasons.

The 22-year-old, who has nine Poland caps and was prominent in Qatar, will give stalwart Gabriel Magalhaes, who has started 20 of the Gunners’ 21 competitive games this season, crucial defensive cover.

Kiwior has the versatility that Mikel Arteta loves so highly in his players, as he can also play left-back and even in a holding midfield position.

Competition for a place in Brazil’s squad is extremely tough given the number of world-class players available to Tite, with centre-back Gabriel losing out to Chelsea’s Thiago Silva, PSG’s Marquinhos, Real Madrid’s Eder Militao and Juventus’ Bremer.

While some may have found his exclusion disappointing, it was undoubtedly improbable considering his lack of international football experience and the fact that the 24-year-old has yet to play for the senior Brazil team.

While Gabriel is yet to directly comment on the matter, he did respond to a fan on his Instagram story shortly after the squad announcement.

Reposting a message that read: ‘I saw you grow up in football, brother. You are the pride of our neighbourhood,’ the defender added a heart and fist-bump emoji to the caption.

In addition, He has also liked a number of his teammates’ social media posts celebrating their own call-up, including that of Jesus who posted a video montage of his highlights along with the captain ‘Inexplicable’.
