Nigeria’s hopes of securing a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been thrown into uncertainty after reports emerged that the Super Eagles have boycotted training ahead of their playoff clash against Gabon.

Super Eagles Boycott Training Ahead of Crucial World Cup Playoff

According to sources close to the team, the players refused to train due to unpaid bonuses and allowances allegedly owed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The outstanding payments are said to include match bonuses, camp allowances, and other entitlements that have piled up over several years.

The players and technical staff reportedly reached a unanimous decision to suspend training until the NFF resolves these financial issues. The standoff comes just days before their decisive fixture, raising fears about the team’s readiness and morale ahead of the high-pressure encounter.

In a statement confirming the development, the team said:

“The full squad, including officials, withheld from training today in Morocco due to unresolved issues with outstanding payments. The Super Eagles are awaiting a quick resolution so they can continue preparations for Thursday’s game against Gabon.”

This latest dispute once again casts a spotlight on the recurring issue of unpaid wages and poor financial management within Nigerian football. Similar payment controversies have plagued the Super Eagles in past tournaments, often surfacing at critical moments.

With the nation’s World Cup ambitions hanging in the balance, fans and analysts are urging the NFF to move swiftly to settle the dispute and restore focus within the camp.

For now, the Super Eagles’ boycott serves as a stark reminder of the deeper administrative challenges that continue to threaten Nigeria’s footballing progress even as the team remains determined to fight for its place on the world stage.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that an all-South African officiating team will take charge of the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying clash between Nigeria and Gabon.

The encounter, scheduled for Thursday, November 13, 2025, promises to be a fiery contest as both nations battle for early qualification points in their group campaign. With both sides eager to make a statement, CAF has turned to one of the continent’s most trusted refereeing crews to maintain order on the pitch.

South Africa’s Tom Abongile will officiate as the centre referee for the first leg, which is set to be played in Rabat. He will be supported by compatriots Zakhele Siwela and Akhona Makalima, who will serve as assistant referee and VAR official, respectively. Another South African will operate as the fourth official, rounding off a complete lineup from the Rainbow Nation.

The appointment reflects CAF’s confidence in South Africa’s refereeing system, which has consistently produced some of the most respected officials on the African continent.

Beyond the technical assignments, CAF’s decision underlines a broader commitment to fairness, consistency, and the continuous elevation of officiating standards across African football.

South African referees have earned global recognition for their discipline and professionalism, qualities CAF is keen to showcase in a match of this magnitude.

The stakes remain high for both sides. The winner of the Nigeria vs Gabon fixture will go on to face the victor between Cameroon and DR Congo in the next round, setting up what could be another thrilling West-Central African showdown.

Match Details at a Glance

Fixture: Nigeria vs Gabon (2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier – First Leg)

Cristiano Ronaldo has once again carved his name deeper into football’s history books after a record-breaking performance in Portugal’s World Cup qualifying clash against Hungary.

The Portuguese icon is now the outright leading scorer in World Cup qualifying history, netting 41 goals in 50 appearances. Before his latest heroics, Ronaldo was level with former Guatemala striker Carlos Ruiz, who held the joint record with 39 goals.

The 40-year-old captain continues to redefine longevity in football. His brace against Hungary not only secured Portugal a crucial win but also pushed his overall international tally to 143 goals in 225 appearances, a run that began with his senior debut back in 2003 at just 18 years old.

His latest strikes came after Portugal fell behind early at the Estadio José Alvalade, with Hungary’s Attila Szalai opening the scoring. But Ronaldo quickly took charge of the game, equalizing in the 22nd minute before turning the scoreline around in first-half stoppage time.

The goals marked his first World Cup qualifying strikes of the year, helping him stretch his lead over long-time rival Lionel Messi, who currently sits on 36 goals in 72 qualifiers.

At 40, Ronaldo shows no signs of slowing down. His sharpness, leadership, and unmatched hunger remain as fierce as ever, driving Portugal closer to another appearance at the World Cup.

With every goal, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner continues to remind the world why he is one of the game’s greatest ever, a legend whose name is destined to live on long after the final whistle.

Under the current setup, nine groups, each containing six teams, are slugging it out across various stadiums in Africa. The winners of each group will automatically qualify for the World Cup, a major milestone that boosts Africa’s representation at the global tournament.

In a recent announcement, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) outlined the details of the playoffs that will determine the continent’s final World Cup spot. According to the statement, the FIFA rankings in October 2025 will be used to decide the seeding for the draw.

CAF explained that the top-ranked nation will take on the fourth-best team, while the second- and third-ranked countries will face each other in a mini knockout round. The semi-finals are scheduled for November 13, 2025, followed by the final on November 16, 2025.

The winner of that playoff will advance to the intercontinental playoffs, set for March 2026, where they’ll compete against teams from Asia, South America, Oceania, or CONCACAF for one of the last remaining tickets to the tournament.

With Africa’s football giants like Nigeria, Senegal, Egypt, Morocco, and Algeria all in the mix and several underdogs dreaming big, the road to 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most thrilling World Cup qualifying campaigns the continent has ever seen.

Following a surprising 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, concerns have intensified over Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With only one victory in six matches, the Super Eagles now face an uphill battle to secure a spot in the tournament, as their qualification prospects have significantly diminished.

Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup Hopes in Jeopardy After Draw Against Zimbabwe

The continent has been allocated nine automatic slots for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Additionally, one more African team can qualify through the inter-confederation playoffs, potentially increasing Africa’s total representation to ten teams.

Nigeria’s Standing in the Qualification Race

South Africa currently tops the group, while Rwanda and Benin are level on points, separated by goal difference. Nigeria, with just seven points from six games, sits in fourth place, trailing behind the frontrunners.

Can Nigeria Still Qualify?

With only four matches left to play, Nigeria must win all remaining games to have any realistic hope of securing a spot. Reports of a potential investigation into South Africa’s qualification campaign and a possible points deduction could provide an unexpected lifeline.

However, even in the best-case scenario, the Super Eagles must capitalize on every opportunity to keep their World Cup dreams alive.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has sent a clear message to the Super Eagles, urging them to secure six crucial points in their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

In a statement following the NFF Executive Committee meeting, the federation emphasized that victory in both matches is non-negotiable if Nigeria hopes to keep its World Cup qualification dreams alive.

The board directed the players to approach both games with full determination and intensity, stressing the need for a winning mentality.

The statement also called on Nigerian fans to rally behind the team, offering support in any fair and appropriate way to help ensure success.

“The executive committee charged the players to go all out for the six points in both matches to boost Nigeria’s qualification hopes. It also called on all Nigerians to support and encourage the team in whatever fair and proper way they are competent to, to guarantee victory in both matches.”

The Super Eagles will take on Rwanda’s Amavubi at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali on Friday, March 21, 2025, before returning home to face Zimbabwe’s Warriors at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.

With the team under pressure, the head coach, players, and technical staff will need to put in their best efforts to turn the tide. Anything less than six points could significantly dent Nigeria’s chances of making it to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Newly appointed England head coach Thomas Tuchel has made a strong impression with his first squad selection ahead of the March 2025 international break.

The German tactician, known for his tactical acumen and ability to reshape teams, has introduced fresh faces while also recalling experienced names as he prepares for his debut match in charge.

Among the notable inclusions, Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly and Newcastle’s Dan Burn have received their maiden call-ups to the senior national team.

Meanwhile, seasoned veterans Jordan Henderson and Kyle Walker have been brought back into the fold, with Marcus Rashford also earning another opportunity at international level.

However, Tuchel’s selection raised eyebrows with the omission of key players such as James Maddison, Jack Grealish, Morgan Gibbs-White, Angel Gomes, Adam Wharton, and Harry Maguire.
