Speaking during a recent interview on Channels Television, Femi explained that the late icon’s body of work remains firmly under the control of the family, contrary to recurring claims that it had been offloaded to external parties.

“We never sold it,” Femi said plainly. “Fela’s estate, which is controlled by the family, controls it. But we licensed the music, so we control it. I don’t know how many more years we have right now, but when the years are done, we’ll take it over and license it again.”

For years, questions around the ownership of Fela’s catalogue have resurfaced, especially whenever new streaming deals or licensing arrangements emerge. Femi’s clarification draws a clear line between outright sale and licensing—two concepts often confused in public conversations.

According to him, the family has only entered into time-bound licensing agreements with foreign partners. These deals allow the music to be distributed and monetised globally, while ownership remains intact. Once such agreements expire, full rights revert to the estate, giving the family the freedom to renegotiate on their own terms.

A key figure in preserving that stance is Yeni Kuti, the eldest of Fela’s children, whom Femi described as the custodian of the legacy. He noted that her position against selling the catalogue shaped the family’s unified decision.

“She’s like the main caretaker, and we give her honour as she is the eldest,” he said. “She is very protective of Fela’s legacy, and she insisted we don’t sell. I saw her view immediately, we all agreed. If we had sold, we would have been done by now; nothing would be coming to the family.”

In a music industry where catalogue sales have become increasingly common—often fetching massive payouts—the Kuti family’s approach stands apart. Rather than cashing out, they have opted for a long-term view, balancing financial returns with cultural preservation.

“It will always be in the hands of the family,” he said. “And I hope even after us, our children will understand how we have maintained dignity and integrity with Fela’s legacy and do that same honour to him after we leave this life.”

Nearly three decades after his passing, Fela’s music continues to grow in global relevance and commercial value. For the Kuti family, holding on to ownership appears to be less about immediate gain and more about protecting a legacy that still resonates across generations.

Fela Kuti & Sade Adu Enter Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

The public announcement unveiled a diverse lineup of inductees across multiple categories, reflecting the institution’s continued effort to recognise global influence in music beyond its traditional Western roots.

In the Performer category, a star-studded class includes acts such as Wu-Tang Clan, Luther Vandross, Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Joy Division / New Order, and Oasis—an eclectic mix spanning hip-hop, R&B, rock, and alternative music.

For Nigeria, however, the standout moment is the dual recognition of two icons whose influence has long crossed continents.

Sade Adu, known for her smooth, timeless vocals and genre-defining classics from the 80s and 90s, continues to shape modern music culture, with her influence echoing in the work of global stars such as Adele and Drake.

Meanwhile, Fela Kuti was honoured in the Early Influence Award category, a recognition of his groundbreaking role as the pioneer of Afrobeat. His fusion of highlife, jazz, and funk didn’t just create a genre—it became a powerful cultural and political statement that still inspires artists worldwide.

He joins other influential figures in that category, including Celia Cruz, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, and Gram Parsons, highlighting his place among music’s most transformative voices.

The 2026 ceremony, scheduled for November 14 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, also celebrates behind-the-scenes contributors through the Musical Excellence Award, with honourees such as Rick Rubin, Linda Creed, Arif Mardin, and Jimmy Miller.

Eligibility rules require that artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior, making this year’s class a celebration of long-standing impact rather than fleeting success.

With both Fela Kuti and Sade Adu recognised on the same induction list, the 2026 edition stands out as a landmark year—one that firmly places Nigerian musical heritage at the heart of global music history.

Nigerian Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has stirred fresh conversations online after making controversial claims about the personal life of his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

Fresh Controversy as Seun Kuti Speaks on Fela’s Private Life

Speaking during a recent Instagram livestream, Seun addressed long-standing narratives surrounding Fela’s health and relationships, pushing back against claims that the legendary musician infected his partners with HIV. Instead, he suggested a different perspective, one he described as rooted in the lifestyle his father embraced.

According to Seun, Fela’s approach to relationships—particularly within his household—was one of openness, where his wives were not restricted from seeing other partners. He argued that this decision ultimately had unintended consequences.

He said …

“Fela made many mistakes. One of the mistakes he made -one day, I saw a video of a lady online saying why are people praising Fela’s legacy despite him giving women HIV and dying of AIDS.

“I said, ‘Oh, Fela you see yourself?’ If Fela was a traditional man, he would still be alive. I will tell you something about him that you might not have known, Fela’s women all had other men.

“Fela did not keep his women to himself. He believed that as he is free to sleep with all the women, the women are also free to meet other men. His law was that they shouldn’t bring the men to his house.

“My father doesn’t leave his house to sleep with other women outside, so it was his women who brought HIV home to him. Nobody is perfect. Everybody make mistakes. But Fela is a man that is on the side of humanity.”

Seun went on to describe this as one of the late icon’s major missteps, suggesting that some of the women allegedly contracted the virus elsewhere and unknowingly passed it on to him.

His comments have since sparked mixed reactions, with many revisiting Fela’s legacy—both as a cultural revolutionary and as a man whose unconventional lifestyle continues to generate debate years after his passing.

Veteran Nigerian music legend 2Baba has shared his thoughts on the ongoing debate comparing Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti with contemporary superstar Wizkid, calling it “ridiculous and disrespectful.”

The award-winning artist made this known during a recent episode of the Mic On podcast, hosted by Seun Okinbaoye, where he also touched on personal issues, including challenges in his marriage to Natasha and the viral London incident that led to his temporary arrest.

Addressing the much-talked-about Fela vs Wizkid comparison, a debate that has drawn reactions from Seun Kuti, Yeni Kuti, Femi Kuti, Wizkid’s fanbase, and the wider Nigerian music community, 2Baba did not mince words.

While acknowledging Wizkid’s massive achievements and global success, the music icon stressed that it is unfair to place the modern-day star alongside Fela, whose influence and contributions to Nigerian music and global Afrobeat remain unmatched.

“It is ridiculous and disrespectful to compare Fela with Wizkid. Also, it is unfair to Wizkid to compare him with Fela,” 2Baba stated.

According to him, both artists belong to different eras, and while Wizkid is carving out an impressive legacy of his own, Fela Kuti’s impact transcends generations and should be treated with the reverence it deserves.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Yeni addressed Fela’s enduring relevance, nearly three decades after his passing, noting that constant comparisons only highlight the timeless impact of his legacy.

According to her, such comparisons neither diminish Fela’s greatness nor accurately reflect the realities of the current music scene. Instead, she urged contemporary artists to focus on competing within their own generation.

“If you’re still talking about him 29 years after his death and you are comparing, you are comparing yourself with someone who has been gone 29 years,” Yeni said. “Compare yourself with your peers and leave him. Leave our legends alone.”

Her comments reinforce the idea that Fela’s influence exists beyond eras and trends, standing as a benchmark of cultural and musical significance that doesn’t require validation through modern-day comparisons.

“I love Wizkid a lot, he is my paddy na. He is my small friend,” she said. “I remember when he started at the Shrine, he was a backup singer. I cannot stop liking Wizkid.”

Despite that long-standing relationship, Yeni said the tone of the feud changed once references to her late father were introduced.

“He did too much by insulting my father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti,” she stated. “If you have a problem with someone, why are you now calling Fela out?”

Veteran musician Femi Kuti has finally spoken on the widely discussed fallout between Nigerian superstar Wizkid and his younger brother, Seun Kuti, offering a calm and measured perspective on the heated exchange that dominated social media in recent weeks.

The tension first surfaced after Seun Kuti openly criticised Wizkid’s fanbase for what he described as disrespectful comparisons between the Ojuelegba singer and their late father, Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Seun argued that such comparisons diminished Fela’s towering legacy.

The situation quickly escalated when Wizkid fired back at Seun in a series of Instagram posts laced with insults, at one point declaring himself greater than Fela — a remark that further inflamed public opinion.

As the dispute spiralled, social media platforms became battlegrounds, with fans, commentators and music lovers sharply divided over the comments and the broader issue of comparing contemporary stars to cultural icons.

Addressing the controversy during a recent interview on Arise TV, Femi Kuti revealed that his silence throughout the drama was intentional. According to him, Fela’s name and legacy should not be dragged into public quarrels or used as reference points in personal disputes.

He stressed that Fela occupies a rare and untouchable position in Nigerian music history, adding that constant comparisons between the Afrobeat legend and today’s artistes are unnecessary and unhelpful.

Femi also made it clear that he had no intention of taking sides, explaining that he maintains close personal relationships with both Seun and Wizkid. While acknowledging the emotions surrounding the issue, he expressed hope that tensions would soon ease.

“I am sure that you have seen that I have not said anything. Fela is our father, I think more of the younger artistes respect him and I do not think that it should have been an issue brought up because he is the template of many things both musically and artistically in Nigeria,” he said.

“So Fela should just be put in a sector of his own and we should just idolize and respect him.

I do not want to go into Seun and Wizkid’s matter because Seun is my brother and Wizkid is like a son. I just wish it did not arise and hopefully everyone would calm down very soon.”

With his remarks, Femi Kuti sought to lower the temperature around the controversy, urging respect for legacy and restraint, while subtly reminding the public that some icons stand beyond comparison.

“Wizkid is like a son to me, and seun is my brother, I just wished the whole thing between them didn’t happen and I really hope everyone would calm down soon. Fela is our father and every artiste respects him”

“He did too much by insulting my father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti,” she stated. “If you have a problem with someone, why are you now calling Fela out?”

The ongoing feud, which erupted earlier in the week, began as a heated exchange between Seun Kuti and Wizkid on social media.

What initially appeared to be a clash of opinions quickly spiralled into personal attacks, drawing in fans, critics, and cultural observers nationwide. The situation intensified after Fela’s legacy was invoked, sparking widespread backlash.

Yeni said she wished the situation had been handled differently, especially by Wizkid, whom she believes could have de-escalated the tension early.

“I wish when all these started, he had put a stop to it before it became what it is now,” she said.

She also lamented the timing of the controversy, noting that it coincides with global recognition of Fela’s enduring influence.

“We are just about to celebrate our icon at the Grammy and you are all doing all this rubbish, as if you are trying to dirty something,” she said. “It’s not Fela or Fela’s family you are dirtying, it’s Nigeria.”

Reflecting on her father’s lasting impact decades after his passing, Yeni pointed out that the continued references to Fela only reinforce his legacy.

“Fela has done his own 27 years, 27 years, and you are still calling his name. That is just the answer to his greatness.”

Her comments have since resonated online, adding a reflective voice to a feud that has grown beyond music and into broader conversations about respect, legacy, and responsibility in Nigeria’s cultural space.

Respected Nigerian music journalist and cultural critic Joey Akan has weighed in on the escalating online clash between Wizkid and Seun Kuti, offering one of the most pointed criticisms yet of the Grammy-winning Afrobeats star.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) page, the Afrobeats Intelligence founder argued that the ongoing chaos surrounding Wizkid FC is not accidental but rather encouraged by the artist himself.

According to Akan, the latest drama has stripped Wizkid of any claim to innocence regarding the conduct of his fiercely loyal fan base.

In a strongly worded post, Joey suggested that Wizkid has long benefited from and subtly fueled the bitterness his fans direct at other artists while publicly distancing himself from the fallout.

”The best part of this Wizkid and Seun drama is, without a doubt, we now know that FC’s ceaseless campaign of bitterness is endorsed from the top. I’ve always suspected it, but I believed Wiz to be better than directly grooming and feeding a divisive horde. But he isn’t. This episode strips him of plausible deniability when they go on attacks against his colleagues, and destroy sacred altars in his name. It is what he wants. I can’t respect that. I can’t respect formatting chaos using a monkey paw to do your dirty work. A sharp contrast to Burna Boy who doesn’t really put his 11 outsiders to task. He even kicks them. That, I can respect,” he wrote.

Joey’s comments come amid days of heated exchanges between Wizkid and Seun Kuti, a situation that has spilled beyond the artists themselves into fan communities, dragging industry figures and legacies into the mud.

Beyond fan behaviour, Akan also aimed at Wizkid’s perceived detachment from Nigeria after attaining global success. Drawing a sharp comparison with Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, he accused Wizkid of abandoning the very culture and people that shaped his career.

”When Fela got international acclaim, he still fought for his people. When you got international acclaim, you denied your people, and the music culture that nourished you. I know my goat,” he added.

Joey Akan’s intervention has further intensified conversations online, with fans split between defending Wizkid and applauding the journalist for saying what many believe has long gone unsaid.

As the Wizkid–Seun Kuti saga continues to dominate timelines, it is clear that the debate has moved beyond music — touching on legacy, responsibility, and what true greatness should represent in Nigerian pop culture.

Afrobeats singer Seun Kuti has intensified his ongoing public feud with Wizkid, marking what he described as the seventh consecutive day of calling out the Grammy-winning artiste and his fan base, popularly known as Wizkid FC.

During an Instagram Live session on Wednesday, January 21, 2025, Seun Kuti launched fresh verbal attacks on Wizkid, referring to the singer and his supporters as “the biggest clout chasers in Nigeria.”

He went further to place a curse on the artiste, claiming Wizkid would not regain success unless he removed the tattoo of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti from his arm and replaced it with one of his biological father.

The outburst follows alleged remarks by Wizkid in which the “Essence” crooner reportedly described Seun Kuti as “a fool at forty,” mocked his use of a ring light to address Wizkid FC online, called him “hungry,” and claimed to be bigger than Fela Kuti.

Reacting to those comments, Seun accused Wizkid of harbouring resentment toward Fela despite having his image tattooed on his body. He argued that the singer lacks originality and fails to draw inspiration from his own roots.

Seun also criticised Wizkid’s multiple stage aliases, including Wizkid, Big Wiz, Machala, and Big Bird, alleging that the “Big Bird” nickname was taken from him, referencing his Instagram handle @bigbirdkuti.

In contrast, Seun expressed open support for Burna Boy, wearing a chain he said was gifted to him by the Grammy-winning singer. He praised Burna Boy for publicly acknowledging that Fela Anikulapo Kuti remains the only artist bigger than him.

Seun further questioned Wizkid’s decision to tattoo Fela instead of his own father, accusing both the singer and his fan base of failing to value homegrown inspiration.

He also alleged that Wizkid has been musically inactive in recent months and has not been booked for shows, though he provided no evidence to support the claim.

Additionally, Seun issued a warning to Asake, urging the singer to be cautious following his joint EP with Wizkid. He claimed Wizkid often seeks relevance by associating with other artistes.

Seun Kuti concluded the live session with more insults directed at Wizkid but stated that he would no longer respond to the singer or his fan base, insisting that his objective had been achieved. He added that his focus has now shifted to preparing for his scheduled performances later this year.

In a viral video, Portable reacted angrily to Wizkid’s claim that he is “bigger than Fela,” dismissing the assertion and questioning Wizkid’s impact, relevance, and street credibility compared to Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and even himself.

“Wizkid said he’s the new Fela; has he been to prison before? I’ve been to prison multiple times. I’m bigger than Wizkid,” Portable boasted in the clip.

Portable insisted that the title of “new Fela” is about sacrifice, struggle, and street-level influence traits he claims Wizkid lacks. “If anyone should be called the new Fela, it should be me, not Wizkid,” he declared.

The comments have intensified the social media frenzy, further dividing fans over Wizkid’s controversial remarks about the Kuti family and the broader discussion of legacy, influence, and street credibility in Nigerian music.

Motunrayo Kuti, daughter of late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has publicly reacted to controversial remarks made by Nigerian singer Wizkid, accusing him of disrespecting her father’s legacy.

In a now-viral video circulating on social media, the digital designer expressed anger over Wizkid’s claim that he is bigger than Fela, describing the statement as deeply insulting to her family. Motunrayo responded with a highly personal outburst, in which she attacked Wizkid’s family background while defending the stature of her late father.

Speaking emotionally, she dismissed Wizkid’s comparison and insisted that his influence does not surpass Fela’s historical and cultural impact. She also made remarks about Wizkid’s parents, stating that the singer is only “bigger than his parents,” not Fela.

Her comments quickly sparked widespread reactions online. While some supporters defended her emotional response, others criticised her for escalating the feud by making it personal and dragging family members into the ongoing Wizkid–Seun Kuti controversy.

The incident adds another layer to the heated debate surrounding comparisons between modern Afrobeats stars and Afrobeat pioneers, a conversation that continues to divide fans and artists across the Nigerian music space.
