• Telecel Ghana Music Awards 2025: Full nominee list officially announced

After weeks of eager anticipation, the nominees for the 26th Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) have finally been unveiled, setting the stage for one of Ghana’s most prestigious music events in 2025.

The grand announcement was made on Saturday, March 15, 2025, through a live broadcast on TV3 and streamed across the official social media pages of the Ghana Music Awards, ensuring fans worldwide could tune in.

Scheduled for May 3, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Center, this year’s TGMA promises fierce competition as Ghana’s top artists battle for the most coveted accolades in the industry.

The road to TGMA 2025 officially kicked off on January 21, 2025, when nominations opened. Charterhouse, the event organizers, received an overwhelming response, with over 1,500 submissions from more than 130 artists and music groups, spanning a variety of genres. A panel of industry professionals meticulously reviewed the entries, ensuring a rigorous and transparent selection process.

However, the most coveted awards—referred to as the “Big 5″—always spark the most excitement and debate. This year’s nominees for these highly anticipated categories are:

As African music continues to enchant global audiences, Spotify Wrapped 2024 unveils the diverse range of genres that people now enjoy all over the world. While Afrobeats and Amapiano often dominate headlines, this year’s Wrapped data sheds light on other emerging sounds that define Africa’s music.

Reimagined histories

Hiplife and Highlife from Ghana, rooted in the country’s rich cultural history, remain highly exported due to their fusion of traditional Highlife melodies with contemporary beats that keep them globally relevant.

Artists like King Paluta, Fameye, and KiDi are leading the way in blending traditional Highlife melodies with modern sounds. Fameye’s Very Soon and King Paluta’s Aseda—a heartfelt song of gratitude—are examples of how the genre is evolving. Their fresh take on Highlife has helped drive a 54% increase in global streams, a sign of the genre’s appeal to both local and international audiences.

In Kenya, Arbantone is mainly characterized by beats from samples of  Kenyan old-school hits. This sound combines elements of Gengetone and old Jamaican riddims, led by a wave of young rappers who bring the raw lyricism of Gengetone. Captivating young audiences, Arbantone is quickly rising on local music charts.

Arbantone grew significantly in 2024, partially thanks to viral dance challenges on social media. Artists like Dyana Cods’ “Set It”, harnessed the genre’s infectious beats and catchy lyrics to connect with her fans. The song became one of the most popular Arbantone tracks in Kenya, securing the number 3 most streamed Arbantone track in Kenya as revealed by the 2024 Spotify Wrapped data.

Embracing experimental sounds

Nigeria’s Alté is becoming more popular abroad, where it’s now the country’s fourth-most exported genre in 2024. Pronounced “uhl-teh,” a shorthand for alternative, you may have heard the experimental mix of Afrobeats, R&B, and hip-hop, with electronic influences on tracks like Soh-Soh by Odeal or Amaarae’s Wanted. The likes of Amaarae, Lady Donli and Odunsi (The Engine) paved the way for a new generation of artists like DEELA, DETO BLACK and brazy to tap into Alté’s rebellious, bold and unconventional brand of self-expression. The global success of Alté-influenced musicians like Tems, Rema and Odeal symbolises how the genre is taking its place in mainstream music culture. Countries like Ghana have embraced the sound with over 60 billion Spotify streams, and Alté now has 41% more global plays than it did a year ago.

South Africa’s Afro House, known for its deep rhythms and soulful vocals, has become a favourite in electronic music circles around the world. DESIREE and DJ Shimza have been instrumental in influencing the growth of Afro House. DESIREE sets blend African rhythms with modern electronic sounds, while DJ Shimza’s electrifying global performances have propelled the genre to new heights. As more artists from around the world incorporate African sounds into their music, the genre has influenced global dance floors.

Household names

Afrobeats continues to lead Africa’s music revolution, evolving rapidly and driving the movement forward. In 2024, the genre saw a significant 28% increase in global streaming. Tracks like Santa by Ayra Starr, Rauw Alejandro, and Rvssian highlight the genre’s versatility, while Calm Down by Rema and Selena Gomez underscore its widespread international appeal. Collaborations like Skillibeng and Tyla’s Jump, Gunna showcase Afrobeats’ adaptability and its growing dominance on global charts.

Amapiano, meanwhile, has emerged as Africa’s fastest-growing genre, with a phenomenal 59% increase in global streaming in 2024. Another sign that the future of global music will undoubtedly feature even more beats, grooves, and melodies from the continent

Ghanaian rapper Fameye has tantalized fans with a glimpse of his forthcoming collaboration with Nigerian music sensation Patoranking. On Instagram, Fameye shared a snippet of the unreleased track, offering a sneak peek into the highly anticipated collaboration. The teaser, presented in the form of a short music video clip, showcases both artists trading verses over an infectious melody.

Set against a gritty urban backdrop, the video provides a glimpse into the song’s theme, aptly titled “Sober.” Alongside the teaser, Fameye engaged with his followers, prompting them to share their excitement and opinions on when they would like the full track to be released. The comments section buzzed with anticipation as fans eagerly awaited the official drop of the much-awaited tune.

In his Instagram post, Fameye captioned the snippet, “Fameye x @patorankingfire !!! When do you want this? #SOBER,” leaving fans eager for more. As of now, an official release date for the song has yet to be announced.

Patoranking, has been introduced as the official brand ambassador for Choice International Group (CIG), the manufacturer of Lontor products.

Patoranking’s endorsement as the face of Lontor was formalized during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Nigerian musician and CIG in Lagos on October 30, 2023.

During the ceremony, Patoranking took the opportunity to deliver a crucial message to Nigerian youth, urging them to safeguard their future by steering clear of any form of drug abuse.

He also advised young individuals and aspiring artists to steer clear of drug abuse, corruption, and other societal vices that could hinder their contributions to the nation’s progress.

Controversial Ghanaian Dancehall artist, Shatta Wale has backed Fameye after the latter criticized the lack of international backing for Ghanaian acts.

Fameye admitted on the “Day Show with Berla Mundi” that he was upset with the poor attendance at his event in the United Kingdom. He blamed the phenomenon on a lack of support from Ghanaians in the diaspora.

In a tweet, Shatta Wale encouraged fans to applaud Fameye and said that if he had made the same remarks as Fameye, he would have faced accusations of disliking his colleagues.

Wendy Shay, the female musician in Ghana with the most streams in 2022, has achieved yet another triumph with the 2023 Shay edition of the “Shay Concert.”

On Saturday, January 7, 2023, thousands of music lovers and supporters of  Shay arrived for a blissful night at the West Hills Mall forecourt for the third instalment of the concert, which was powered by Ruff Town Records and sponsored by Ebony Condoms.

Through her charity and Rufftown Records,  Shay planned a free health test and a vaccination session at the same location before the event, which got underway at about 7 o’clock. When the show finally started, the award-winning singer-songwriter wowed the audience with an hour of nonstop, energising performance while dishing out timeless tunes from her catalogue.

Numerous artists, including Fameye, Sister Afia, Eno Barony, Amerado, Ras Kuuku, Kwame Yogot, Larruso, Bosom Pyung, Kwaku Darlington, Darkovibes, Malcolm Nuna, and others, attended the event in style and gave the fans an unforgettable experience. Every square inch of the forecourt was taken with music lovers, creating memories.

The massive crowd stretched as far as the streets, causing a massive traffic jam on the Accra – Kasoa highway. One would estimate over 20,000 people were in attendance. The first edition of the ‘Shay Concert’ took place in 2018, with a second edition in 2019.

The organizers of the  Ghana music awards have announced the full list of nominees ahead of the event scheduled to take place on the 29th of October 2022.

The complete list of nominees for the 2022 edition of the yearly Ghana Music Awards UK has finally been released.

On Friday, July 1, 2022, the announcement was made at a festive event hosted by well-known media figures Doreen Avio and Blaque Boy at the Omanye Hall, Labadi Beach Hotel.

Top performers from the entertainment industry attended the announcement party. The 2022 edition of the GMA UK happens to be the 6th edition. The main award will come off on Saturday, October 29, 2022.

Oluwajuwonlo Iledare, better known as Jaywon, has challenged singer Daniel Oyebanjo, better known as D’banj, claiming infringement on his intellectual property.

Jaywon stated D’banj called him to beg his artist to drop his song, but they respectfully declined.

Surprisingly, D’banj proceeded to release the song without their permission.

He chastised the “Oliver Twist” crooner, saying that he and his managers could do better.

In his words;

“After calling to ask my artist to drop his song and we refused your offer then you went ahead to release the song. Abah @iambangalee and management. You can do better”.

Interestingly, D’banj just released his 2022 debut single titled “Face SHow” which features Skiibii and Hollyhood Bay Bay.

In other news, Jaywon has released his long-awaited studio album titled, “Jahbalee“.

The new body of work narrates the factual existence of the different kinds of love – Jaywon’s line of thoughts glides through money, women, brotherly vibes, and much more.

It examines the singer’s unrelenting passion for music – gnashing his way into different blends of genres.

Being a 14-track LP, Jaywon outstandingly takes us into an interpersonal & intrapersonal mode of communication – depicting his in-depth knowledge of street music and urban vibes.

Although the majority of the tracks are love-themed, Jaywon was still able to pull some moral vibes like, On God which features Fameye, and Just Thinking which features Ghanaian wordsmith, Medikal.

The 23rd edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, which was held on Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 8, 2022, in Accra’s Grand Arena, was a memorable award ceremony that saw some of Ghana’s top celebrities come together to honour African music.

The first night of the event saw Fameye, Wizkid, Kweisey Pee, Stonebwoy and MOG Beatz take home awards.

Jaywon drops artwork and tracklist for the studio album.

Jaywon has unveiled the artwork and tracklist for his forthcoming studio album, ‘Jahbahlee‘.

The project houses fourteen tracks, featuring Timaya, Seyi Vibez, Ghana’s Medikal, Jaywillz, Portable, and others.

Prior to this, Jaywon released his 2022 official single titled, Zelle – the street hop banger produced by Brainz which serves as the lead track off the forthcoming body of work.
