    Portuguese midfielder and Manchester United captain, Bruno Fernandes, has faced criticism for his treatment of his teammate Facundo Pellistri during a match where Fernandes was captaining the team. Micah Richards, a former Manchester City player and football commentator, expressed disapproval of Fernandes’ behavior, describing it as “pathetic.”

    Fernandes had been given the captain’s armband at the beginning of the season following Harry Maguire’s removal as club captain. However, Manchester United’s performance under Fernandes’ leadership has been mixed, with inconsistent results in their matches.

    During a game against Tottenham, Fernandes reportedly berated the young player Pellistri after an attacking move was halted. Richards voiced his criticism of Fernandes’ actions on The Rest Is Football podcast.

    He said: “It’s getting embarrassing now. The young lad Pellistri comes on, Fernandes is trying to get his team playing and I totally understand he’s frustrated.

    “Pellistri made a run, Fernandes didn’t see him and [so] he made a different run but because he wasn’t where [Fernandes] wanted him to be, he’s going off at Pellistri. It’s every time. I saw an interview with him the other day and he said he needs to be emotional when he performs because it makes him play better. But I feel like his body language on the pitch is disturbing the rest of the team and it’s just not a good look at all. It’s pathetic at times.”

    Manchester United winger Facundo Pellistri has acknowledged that after waiting nearly two and a half years for his professional debut, he began to wonder if his moment at the team would ever arrive.

    Pellistri, who is 18 years old, joined United from Uruguayan powerhouses Penarol in October 2020 and initially started off playing for the team’s Under-23 group. By January, he had impressed and appeared to be in line for an opportunity with the first squad, but a case of Covid-19 forced the young player to miss an FA Cup match against Watford.

    Pellistri eventually ended up joining Alaves on loan before the end of that month. In 2021/22, after playing with United at least during the preseason, he went back to the Spanish team for an entire season.

    This season, the now-21-year-old has spent most of his time on the bench in the Premier League and Europa League, never making an appearance. His lack of opportunities was quite strange given that he was making gains with Uruguay at the international level and got to the World Cup.

    “I have been waiting for this moment for a long time, and it came. Of course, I’m really happy because of the moment and the way it was, and that is incredible,” Pellistri has now told club media in the wake of his United debut against Charlton this week.

    “I had the luck to be at Old Trafford in other squads, but unluckily I didn’t enter the pitch to play. I looked at the crowd and all the time I thought ‘when will my moment arrive to play?’ It was the day and I enjoyed it a lot.”

    “I am very happy, and I want to help my teammates to achieve all the trophies that we have in mind and to win every game we have because this is an incredible club and very big. All players want to play and of course I want more. I will fight and train hard to continue this way.“

    After the game, United manager Erik ten Hag stated that he was pleased with what he saw from Pellistri and hinted at a future for him at Old Trafford.

    Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has commented on the club’s links with Wout Weghorst and addressed Facundo Pellistri’s future at Old Trafford.

    Speaking after United’s 3-0 win against League One side Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday, Ten Hag claimed he “sees a future” in the young Uruguayan, who came on as a substitute after 84 minutes to make his long-awaited competitive debut for the club.

    But when it came to Weghorst’s connections to the team, he was less forthcoming, declining to comment on recent rumours of a possible loan deal for the Dutchman.

    “No, unfortunately, I can’t,” Ten Hag said when asked for an update on Burnley striker Weghorst, who is reportedly close to cutting short his current loan spell at Besiktas to join United.

    He added on Pellistri: “I see a future in [Pellistri]. He is doing really well, he is progressing. Also against Everton [in last month’s friendly], I was really happy with his performance. He is coming on and has an effect, that is the next step.”

    While the club assesses their attacking options in the current market, academy graduate Marcus Rashford continued his fine form against Charlton, scoring two goals in the closing stages to extend his home scoring streak to eight games and take his tally to 15 in all competitions.

    United, meanwhile, have recorded eight wins in a row since losing to Aston Villa in early November and will know their League Cup semi-final opponents after the draw takes place on Wednesday evening.

    Ten Hag’s team will play rival Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday after finding out who they will face in the next round of the cup.
