The Blues will pay a £2 million loan fee for the highly rated 20-year-old, who had initially been on the verge of joining Leeds United. Chelsea made their move earlier in the week after missing out on Xavi Simons, who completed a switch to Tottenham.

Although Chelsea explored alternatives such as Fermin Lopez, Buonanotte quickly emerged as their preferred option. The agreement with Brighton is a straight loan with no option to buy, as the Seagulls remain keen to keep long-term control of the Argentine midfielder’s future.

Buonanotte’s arrival marks Chelsea’s first piece of deadline day business, on what is shaping up to be a busy window finale. His signing also comes amid fresh developments around Nicolas Jackson, who is edging closer to a loan move to Bayern Munich after renewed talks between the two clubs.

The Argentine youngster, who spent last season on loan at Leicester City, is expected to provide valuable cover for Cole Palmer, who missed Chelsea’s victory over Fulham last weekend through injury.
