The decision to split the teams across both assignments appears to be part of Chelle’s wider plan to assess more players while building depth within the Super Eagles setup.

Head coach Éric Chelle has announced his Super Eagles squad ahead of the March international break, as Nigeria gears up for a four-nation invitational tournament.

The selection is seen as another key step in Chelle’s ongoing rebuilding project, with the Malian tactician continuing to evaluate his options as he shapes the future of the national team. The squad reflects a deliberate mix of experienced players and fresh faces, underlining his focus on competition and depth.

Among the notable inclusions are familiar names like Maduka Okoye, Semi Ajayi, Frank Onyeka, Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, Akor Adams, and Paul Onuachu.

The list also features some exciting new call-ups. Scotland-based defender Emmanuel Fernandez has earned his maiden invitation, alongside Germany-based forward Philip Otele and Collins Sor of KRC Genk. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Adebayo Adeleye returns to the squad.

Reports suggest that several new faces have been drafted into the defence and goalkeeping departments, while a few regulars have been left out, signaling Chelle’s intention to build healthy competition across all positions.

Nigeria will face Jordan, Iran, and Costa Rica in the invitational tournament scheduled for later this month. The matches are expected to give the coaching crew a clearer picture of player combinations and tactical flexibility.

Beyond being routine friendlies, the games offer a platform for players to prove themselves and stake a claim for regular roles in the squad. With expectations always high for the Super Eagles, fans will be watching closely to see how this evolving team performs under Chelle’s guidance.

In his latest vlog, the Fulham midfielder spoke candidly about the Malian-born tactician’s impact on the Nigerian national team, praising him for building strong unity and chemistry among the players.

According to Iwobi, Chelle’s leadership has gone beyond tactics, helping transform the squad into a close-knit family.

Iwobi recounted an emotional moment behind the scenes, disclosing that the coach was visibly moved during a recent team address.

“The coach (Eric Chelle) has done a lot for us. Everybody worked hard for him, and when he gave his last speech, he got emotional,” Iwobi said.
“He deserves a lot of praise. He got the team together — big chemistry.”

The midfielder’s comments underline how Chelle has earned the trust of the squad, fostering a collective spirit that has been evident in Nigeria’s recent performances.

The Super Eagles have shown renewed grit, defensive discipline, and togetherness, qualities Iwobi attributes directly to the manager’s influence.

Since taking charge, Chelle has successfully navigated the intense pressure that comes with managing Nigeria’s national team, winning over senior figures like Iwobi while seamlessly integrating new talents into the setup.

In a football culture where coaches are often heavily scrutinized, Chelle’s ability to inspire unity and emotion within a team of global stars speaks volumes about his leadership and could prove vital to Nigeria’s ambitions going forward.

Nigeria entered the tournament with renewed confidence, aiming to overcome the disappointment of the 2023 AFCON final loss in Côte d’Ivoire and the painful failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, that dream came to an end after the Super Eagles fell to the host nation in a tense encounter decided by penalties.

Speaking after the match, Chelle admitted that his side did not hit the same heights they had shown earlier in the competition.

While he refused to blame fatigue, the Franco-Malian coach acknowledged a noticeable dip in technical sharpness and intensity at key moments of the game.

“Our technicality was not like the same from last match. I don’t want to say we were tired but that’s not the level.”

Chelle explained that Nigeria struggled to impose themselves the way they had done in previous matches, stressing that small margins and decision-making ultimately worked against his team on the night.

Despite the loss, the coach was full of praise for his players’ attitude and fighting spirit. He noted that the Super Eagles showed resilience and commitment, battling until the final whistle in what was always going to be a difficult contest against the host nation.

He also addressed questions surrounding his tactical calls, particularly during the penalty shootout, insisting that his decisions were based strictly on what he saw in training.

On the penalties, Chelle said:

“We put Chukwueze for penalties because the guys who kicked the penalties were the best in training. The match was never easy, but the players showed strong mentality and fought for every ball. We worked hard throughout the tournament. This is football, and we must continue working.”

According to Chelle, penalty shootouts are unpredictable and should not be used to judge a team’s overall performance or commitment across the competition.

Looking ahead, the Super Eagles coach emphasised the need to regroup quickly as attention shifts to the third-place playoff, while also hinting that discussions regarding his future with the national team will take place after the tournament.

For now, Chelle insists the focus remains on finishing the AFCON campaign strongly and taking lessons from a tournament that once again came down to the finest of margins.

The three-time African champions maintained their strong run with a convincing 2–0 victory over Algeria in the quarter-finals at Marrakech Stadium.

After a goalless first half, Nigeria broke the deadlock through Victor Osimhen, who rose highest to head in a precise cross from Bruno Onyemaechi, giving the Super Eagles the lead. The result was sealed late when Sevilla forward Akor Adams produced a stunning solo effort to put the match beyond doubt.

Reacting to the victory, Chelle praised his players for their mindset and performance, noting clear signs of improvement under his guidance.

“The Nigerian players are very happy, and I am extremely proud of them,” Chelle said.
“We really enjoyed the match. I have worked a lot since taking over my role with the Nigerian national team; we put in a lot of effort during preparations.
“My vision has been implemented in the Nigerian team, and we must continue working in this manner.
“The victory we achieved against Algeria was deserved. The match was fantastic, and I am very happy with the win.”

Looking ahead, Chelle has already shifted focus to the semi-final clash against hosts Morocco. Acknowledging the quality of the Atlas Lions, the Franco-Malian tactician remains confident that his team can rise to the challenge.

“After this match, we have another game, and we will prepare for it,” he added.
“Morocco is a strong team, and there will be pressure in front of the host nation. The best team will win. I am proud that we will face Morocco, and I hope it will be a good match, with the best team winning.”

Should Nigeria overcome Morocco in Rabat, they will face either Egypt or Senegal in the final as they chase a fourth AFCON crown and aim to cement their place among Africa’s footballing elite.

Chelle’s words reflect both satisfaction at the current form of his squad and a clear focus on the challenges that lie ahead as the Super Eagles pursue continental glory.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Chelle confirmed that the first-choice goalkeeper is dealing with knee and ankle discomfort following Nigeria’s dramatic 3–2 victory over Tunisia on Saturday.

Nigeria have already booked their place in the Round of 16 after back-to-back wins against Tanzania (2–1) and Tunisia (3–2), meaning the technical crew may opt for squad rotation ahead of the knockout phase.

Nwabali appeared to aggravate a pre-existing issue during the Tunisia encounter, particularly while attempting to stop the North Africans’ opening goal, when he landed awkwardly.

After the match, the Chippa United captain spoke candidly about the physical strain he is enduring at the tournament.

“I was injured, but with the help of the team doctors and physios, I’m able to stand on the pitch and play,” Nwabali said.
“It is quite tough for me because it is not something you come out to say… but I am always a strong man, I try to represent my country.”

Chelle also revealed that Frank Onyeka is nursing an ankle issue, adding that the final decision on team selection will be made after the last training session.

“Nwabali has a small knee pain, and Frank is dealing with an ankle problem,” Chelle said.
“We will take care of the situation for the team. I need to consider the whole team, and we still have one training session.”

With progression already secured, the Super Eagles boss hinted at a possible surprise in goal, as Nigeria look to manage player fitness ahead of the knockout rounds.

Should Nwabali be rested, Francis Uzoho and Amas Obasogie are available as options between the sticks.

Nigeria currently sits atop Group C with six points, while Uganda heads into Tuesday’s encounter needing a positive result to keep their qualification hopes alive.

The road to Morocco has officially begun for the Super Eagles, as Nigeria finally unveiled its 23-man squad for the much-anticipated AFCON 2025 tournament.

With the competition set to kick off on December 21, head coach Eric Chelle has now closed the chapter on speculations, trimming a wide provisional list into a carefully assembled group that mixes trusted veterans with hungry new arrivals.

AFCON 2025: Super Eagles Unveil Final 23-Man Squad for Morocco

The announcement released just before CAF’s deadline marks a key milestone in Nigeria’s push for a fourth continental crown, and the mood around the squad reflects the weight of expectation.

Unsurprisingly, the familiar name leading the charge is team captain and talisman Victor Osimhen, whose presence remains central to Nigeria’s attacking identity and dressing-room spirit.

Between the sticks, goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali overcame recent injury concerns to secure his place. He will be joined by Francis Uzoho and Amos Obasogie, giving the team a blend of stability and fresh options in a role that has sparked much debate over the past year.

But no squad unveiling is complete without a bit of drama, and Chelle’s list delivered just that. Some notable omissions set social media buzzing almost instantly. Udinese shot-stopper Maduka Okoye did not cut, despite widespread belief that he would.

The exclusion of striker Victor Boniface, who personally confirmed the news in a video, added another twist, while Nathan Tella’s absence raised further eyebrows.

Still, the squad carries its share of pleasant surprises. Defender Ryan Alebiosu earned his stripes and booked a ticket to Morocco, a move many interpret as the coaching crew securing his long-term international commitment.

Young midfielder Ebenezer Akinsanmiro also broke into the final squad on the strength of his club form, signaling a clear desire to inject fresh energy into the setup.

In midfield, Nigeria continues to rely on seasoned campaigners Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, and Frank Onyeka, players known for their tactical discipline and ability to dictate play. Surrounded by emerging talents, they are expected to anchor a dynamic unit capable of adapting to the unpredictable nature of AFCON football.

As reactions pour in, opinions remain divided. Some fans applaud Chelle’s bold calls and the balance of youth and experience, while others question the absence of certain high-performing stars.

There have even been hints that lobbying and behind-the-scenes pressures played a role in the delayed release of the final list, adding a dash of intrigue to the buildup.

With the roster now sealed, the Super Eagles will shift gears into full preparation mode before jetting off to Morocco. And as the countdown tightens, one thing is certain: Nigerians everywhere will be watching this 2025 squad closely, hoping this group—built for grit, speed, and versatility—can finally bring home a long-awaited fourth AFCON trophy.

With the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco drawing closer, the excitement around Nigeria’s campaign has taken a new turn as Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle rolled out a wide-ranging provisional squad, one that mirrors the country’s immense talent pool and burning ambition.

Chelle’s list reads like a map of Nigerian football excellence: established warriors, revived stars returning for another shot, and fresh faces eager to stamp their identity on the green-white-green.

The announcement marks the start of the final sprint toward AFCON, where every invited player now faces the same challenge: fight for a ticket into the final 28-man squad.

In the goalkeeping corner, the familiar anchors are back. Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye, both enjoying strong club runs, stand tall as early frontrunners for the No. 1 shirt.

Around them, a group of hungry newcomers have been summoned to stake their claim, hoping to give Chelle something to think about during camp.

The defence carries a reassuring blend of leadership and fresh energy. Captain William Troost-Ekong remains the heartbeat of the backline, flanked by solid deputies like Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi, Zaidu Sanusi, and Ola Aina.

Sprinkled among them are new defensive prospects, home and abroad, ready to compete, adapt, and offer the tactical variety the coach has been craving.

Nigeria’s midfield, as expected, brims with personality and depth. Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Frank Onyeka, and Raphael Onyedika form the experienced spine, providing everything from steel and stability to guile and creativity.

Chelle also widened the door for rising midfield profiles who have been catching attention at the club level, ensuring he has the right pieces to adjust the team’s rhythm and structure for different opponents.

Then comes the department every Nigerian fan talks about with pride—the attack. The Super Eagles’ frontline is once again a thing of beauty and fear. Victor Osimhen, the talisman, leads a devastating lineup that includes Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, and other dynamic forwards.

Together, they bring pace, unpredictability, and ruthless finishing qualities that will make Nigeria one of the tournament’s most dangerous sides.

As camp opens and competition intensifies, one thing is clear: this provisional squad tells a story of a coach with options and a nation with expectations.

All eyes are now on Chelle as he shapes the final team for Morocco 2025 where the Super Eagles hope to soar again.
