South African singer Tyla made a stunning impact at the 2024 Billboard Music Awards (BBMA) in Los Angeles, winning two prestigious accolades and solidifying her place as one of the Afrobeats genre’s brightest stars.

The 22-year-old, who received eight nominations across six categories, took home the awards for Top Afrobeats Song and Top Afrobeats Artist at the Thursday night event, marking a major achievement in her career.

On a night full of memorable moments, Taylor Swift made history as the most decorated artist in the BBMA’s history, claiming ten awards. Zach Bryan followed with five, while Morgan Wallen earned four. Shaboozey, Bad Bunny, Drake, and Elevation Worship each walked away with three awards.

While Burna Boy, Rema, and Tems have previously been celebrated at the Billboard Music Awards, Tyla’s victories underscore her swift rise and the increasing global influence of South African music within the Afrobeats scene.

Tyla’s double win—Top Afrobeats Artist and Top Afrobeats Song for her hit track “Water”—adds another milestone to a year marked by her growing international presence.

Though Taylor Swift and Zach Bryan were key figures in this year’s awards, Tyla’s achievement resonated deeply within the Afrobeats community. It was a monumental moment, as she became a first-time finalist at the prestigious event, alongside music giants like Drake and Kendrick Lamar. This recognition is just one of many, as Tyla has also claimed a Grammy, two BET Awards, and an MTV VMA in 2024.

Tyla’s win at the BBMA reflects her dedication to representing African music on the world stage. She has been vocal about the diversity of African genres, proudly sharing her pride in representing South Africa’s amapiano culture. “African music is more than just Afrobeats,” she remarked earlier this year after her MTV VMA win.

Despite her meteoric success, Tyla remains grounded and focused on her music and fans. After completing a South African tour that included stops in Cape Town and Johannesburg, she will return to the stage for another performance in Pretoria this January.

Tyla also electrified the BBMA stage with dynamic performances of “Push 2 Start” and “Shake Ah,” further solidifying her status as a global music sensation.

Apple Music has revealed the lineup for the 2023 Christmas playlist of carol covers. “Carols Covered” is making a return with a fresh roster of exclusive holiday songs reimagined by some of today’s most influential contemporary artists. Additionally, there’s a new “Classical Carols Covered” playlist that showcases beautiful renditions of carols and festive songs by top classical musicians.

Carols are the heart and soul of Christmas and other holidays. They’re sung at festive services and joyfully belted out at home with friends and family. While carols are a cherished part of our longstanding traditions, they also continue to evolve, with new arrangements composed each year, breathing new life into timeless classics.

This year’s lineup includes fresh interpretations from a diverse range of artists, such as Ángela Aguilar, Armani White, Bnxn, Coco Jones, David Shaw, Dikka, Elevation Worship, Ella Henderson, Gallant & Jensen McRae, G Flip, Hakushi Hasegawa, Hemlocke Springs, Jeongyeon of TWICE, Lauren Spencer Smith, and Restless Road.

In addition to the contemporary artists, this year’s collection features heartwarming renditions by classical musicians like Maria Duenas, Olivia Belli, Randall Goosby & Carlos Simon, The Sixteen, and Xuefei Yang. Blaqbonez has maintained the top spot for about 2 weeks run as the number one (#1) album in the country with ‘Sex Over Love’

Wizkid‘s ‘made in Lagos’ climbed 2 spots to secure number #2, the album had reclaimed the #1 spot on the NG Apple Music Albums Chart a total of 7 times, becoming the most for any album more #1 re-entries on the chart.

Ruger‘s EP ‘Pandemic’ also goes up to number #4, the extended play project shuttle from top 10 to top 5, and has not left the top 10 since release amidst other albums.

Elevation Worship & Maverick City Music’s ‘Old Church Basement’ goes one spot up to grasp the number #5
