The Premier League has officially unveiled the final contenders for its prestigious Player and Manager of the Season awards for the 2024/25 campaign.

Unsurprisingly, Liverpool dominates the list after a commanding title-winning season, ending Manchester City’s five-year grip on the award.

The reigning champions failed to produce a single nominee this time around following a disappointing showing.

Meanwhile, five standout managers are also in the running for top honors, with Pep Guardiola expected to surrender the crown after back-to-back wins.

Player of the Season Nominees—2024/25

Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest)
Gibbs-White has emerged as the creative heartbeat of a Forest side that unexpectedly challenged for European qualification. With consistent top-tier performances, he’s caught the eye of clubs like Manchester City and earned a spot in England’s squad.

Ryan Gravenberch (Liverpool)
Few would have predicted Gravenberch’s transformation into a midfield mainstay under Arne Slot. Once facing uncertainty over his Liverpool future, he played every league game in their title-winning run, operating as a deep-lying playmaker and delivering crucial contributions—including four assists.

Alexander Isak (Newcastle United)
With 23 goals and counting, Isak sits second in the Premier League scoring charts. His electric form has Newcastle placing a staggering £150 million valuation on the Swedish striker as interest builds ahead of the summer.

Bryan Mbeumo (Brentford)
Stepping up in the wake of Ivan Toney’s exit, Mbeumo has excelled in both central and wide roles. With 18 goals and seven assists, the Frenchman has been a driving force behind Brentford’s most impressive season to date.

Declan Rice (Arsenal)
A rare constant in Arsenal’s rollercoaster campaign, Rice has blended his trademark defensive prowess with newfound creativity. His leadership has not gone unnoticed, as he remains one of Arteta’s most indispensable assets.

Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)
A tour de force in Liverpool’s charge to the title, Salah has racked up a phenomenal 28 goals and 18 assists. Amid ongoing speculation about his future, he’s delivered one of the finest individual seasons in Premier League history.

Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)
Returning to his dominant best, Van Dijk has anchored the league’s most formidable defense. The Dutch captain, previously named Player of the Season in 2018/19, has been pivotal in Liverpool’s resurgence under new management.

Chris Wood (Nottingham Forest)
Defying expectations at 33, Wood has netted 20 league goals, propelling Forest up the table. His clinical edge and veteran presence have been vital in one of the league’s most surprising campaigns.

Manager of the Season Nominees – 2024/25

Thomas Frank (Brentford)
Leading Brentford to a record-breaking finish, Frank has orchestrated a high-scoring, fearless side that consistently punches above its weight—despite relegation fears just a year ago.

Eddie Howe (Newcastle United)
Howe has taken Newcastle to heights they haven’t seen since 1997, firmly placing them in the Champions League conversation and guiding them to a likely second-place finish.

Nuno Espirito Santo (Nottingham Forest)
With two of his players up for Player of the Season, it’s only fitting Nuno gets recognition. Turning a mid-table squad into a dark horse title challenger, he’s led Forest to a stunning European push.

Vitor Pereira (Wolverhampton Wanderers)
Appointed in December with Wolves languishing in 19th, Pereira masterminded a remarkable turnaround. With 10 wins in 20 games, he’s become a fan favorite and savior at Molineux.

Arne Slot (Liverpool)
Slot took over from club legend Jürgen Klopp—and instead of a transition year, delivered the title with flair. With the most goals scored and only two defeats all season, the Dutchman’s debut campaign has been nothing short of masterful.

The Premier League has unveiled its shortlist for the April 2025 Player and Manager of the Month awards, with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United leading the charge after both clubs enjoyed standout months.

Player of the Month Nominees—April 2025

Rayan Ait-Nouri (Wolves)

Harvey Barnes (Newcastle United)

Alexis Mac Allister (Liverpool)

Jacob Murphy (Newcastle United)

Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa)

Ryan Sessegnon (Fulham)

Jorgen Strand Larsen (Wolves)

Wolves could break a long-standing drought, as the club has never produced a Premier League Player of the Month in the award’s 31-year history. Ait-Nouri and Strand Larsen, instrumental in Wolves’ six straight wins, aim to change that.

Strand Larsen and Barnes led the scoring charts with four goals each, while Jacob Murphy and Morgan Rogers dazzled with their creativity—Murphy racking up three goals and three assists, and Rogers leading the league with four assists.

Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister earned a nod for the quality of his goals, including two stunning top-corner strikes.

Manager of the Month Nominees – April 2025

Vitor Pereira (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

Unai Emery (Aston Villa)

Pep Guardiola (Manchester City)

Eddie Howe (Newcastle United)

Arne Slot (Liverpool)

Though newly crowned champion Arne Slot led Liverpool to Premier League glory, Vitor Pereira is the overwhelming favourite for the managerial award. His Wolves side posted a perfect five-win April, part of a six-game winning streak not seen at the club since 1970.

Newcastle’s Eddie Howe earned a nomination despite missing half the month due to illness, while Emery and Guardiola delivered strong performances with their respective sides.

The Premier League has announced the nominees for the first Player and Manager of the Month awards of 2025.

Seven players from six different clubs are in contention, including December’s winner, Alexander Isak of Newcastle United, who aims to become the first player to win back-to-back awards since Marcus Rashford in February 2023.

Meanwhile, four managers are in the running to claim the first managerial honor of the year, with the league set to crown its fifth different winner of the season.

No player in the Premier League scored more goals in January than Phil Foden, who has rediscovered top form for Manchester City. The dynamic midfielder found the net six times in just four games against West Ham, Brentford, Ipswich, and Chelsea, also providing an assist against Kieran McKenna’s side.

Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo made history in January, setting a new Dutch record by scoring in a sixth consecutive Premier League home game, surpassing Robin van Persie and Ruud van Nistelrooy. He capped off the month with a standout performance against Ipswich.

In defense, Bournemouth’s highly sought-after center-back Dean Huijsen earns a nomination after making an immediate impact. Since his introduction to the starting lineup, the Cherries have gone unbeaten, securing victories over Everton, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest while drawing against Chelsea. His teammate Justin Kluivert also shined, registering five goals and two assists.

Reigning Player of the Month Alexander Isak is aiming to defend his crown following an electrifying January for Newcastle United. The Swedish striker bagged five goals, bringing his season tally to 17 in just 21 appearances, while also recording his fifth assist of the campaign.

Crystal Palace fans had plenty of chances to chant about Jean-Philippe Mateta, who delivered four goals in as many games, punishing Chelsea, Leicester, and West Ham.

Rounding out the shortlist is Brentford’s ever-reliable Bryan Mbeumo. With four more goals in January, the forward also created 13 chances for his teammates—only three players in the league managed more.

No team earned more points in January than Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal. The Gunners secured 11 out of a possible 15, including a crucial North London derby victory over Tottenham, keeping them firmly in the Premier League title race.

After a difficult end to 2024, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City found their rhythm again. City won three of their four games, scoring a combined 13 goals against West Ham, Ipswich, and Chelsea, while grinding out a hard-fought 2-2 draw away at Brentford.

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United had a brief setback against Bournemouth but otherwise enjoyed a strong month. Wins over Tottenham, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Southampton saw the Magpies finish January in fifth place.

Bournemouth continued their impressive unbeaten run, which stretches back to late November. Andoni Iraola’s side added Everton, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest to their list of scalps while earning a well-deserved 2-2 draw with Chelsea, leaving them just one point outside the top four.

Amidst the festive football frenzy, the Premier League unveiled eight nominees for Player of the Month and four candidates for Manager of the Month. Liverpool duo Mohamed Salah and Arne Slot, who were awarded in November, are once again in contention, but other standout performances have earned additional recognition.

Premier League Player of the Month nominees: December 2024

– Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)
– Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest)
– Dean Huijsen (Bournemouth)
– Alexander Isak (Newcastle)
– Jacob Murphy (Newcastle)
– Cole Palmer (Chelsea)
– Antonee Robinson (Fulham)
– Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

No player matched Alexander Isak’s remarkable achievement of eight Premier League goals in December. The Swedish striker scored in all six of Newcastle United’s matches and netted his first career hat-trick against Ipswich Town.

His dynamic attacking partnership with Jacob Murphy, who provided three assists and scored three goals, was key to their success. Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool also made the list, with Salah contributing seven assists and seven goals despite ongoing contract speculation.

Cole Palmer of Chelsea has been another standout performer, despite his team’s struggles, and Morgan Gibbs-White of Nottingham Forest has earned recognition for his creative contributions.

The list also includes Dean Huijsen, a standout centre-back for Bournemouth, and Antonee Robinson, a key player for Fulham.

– Eddie Howe (Newcastle)
– Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth)
– Arne Slot (Liverpool)

Arne Slot remains a top contender, with Liverpool maintaining a healthy six-point lead at the Premier League summit. However, Nuno Espirito Santo guided Nottingham Forest to an impressive 15 points from six games, finishing the festive period atop the table.

Their remarkable five-match winning streak propelled them to second place, their best position this late in the season since 1994. Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth, unbeaten in December and known for their high-octane football, earned recognition after a notable win against Manchester United.

Finally, Eddie Howe of Newcastle led his team to four straight league wins, securing a Carabao Cup semi-final spot and maintaining an impressive defensive record.

These nominees reflect a highly competitive December, with standout individual and managerial performances setting the stage for an exciting second half of the season.

On Thursday, it was officially announced that Tonali had been suspended from football for ten months due to violations of Italian wagering laws.

Due to this, he will miss the rest of the current season, the first few weeks of the 2024–25 campaign, and Italy’s participation in Euro 2024.

Newcastle, which spent £55 million to acquire the 23-year-old midfield player from AC Milan this summer, is reportedly considering all of its legal options to see whether they are eligible for monetary damages.

Tonali said, in a meeting with Italian officials last week, that he had wagered on many football events, including Milan games.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president, Gabriele Gravina, confirmed Tonali’s punishment, stating that he would be out of action for ten months and would spend an extra eight months in a rehabilitation program.

However, Newcastle manager Howe has stated that the Premier League team has not yet had “official confirmation” of Tonali’s punishment and that he would probably be ready for Saturday’s match against Wolves.

Tonali told Newcastle’s official website: ‘First of all, I want to thank Newcastle United because they are giving me a huge opportunity for my career.

Tonali, one of the best players in Italy, led his nation at the Under 21 European Championships this summer.

He transferred from Brescia to AC Milan in 2020 on a temporary loan, and he has since made 130 Serie A games.

Tonali participated in all 12 of their contests as they advanced to the Champions League semifinals before losing to rival Inter Milan.

Despite earlier this summer’s rumours from Italy that he had’rejected’ a deal with the Magpies and that AC Milan was ‘pushing’ for him to depart, he has now signed with Newcastle.

According to La Republica, Stefano Pioli’s team “needs the money” from Tonali’s sale, but the midfielder “broke down in tears” when he learned of the transfer since he “never wanted to leave the club,” the publication reported.

Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle United, maintains that the team would only add the “right players” as they advance under the new ownership while still keeping a careful check on the club’s budget.

With five games left in the domestic season and a game in hand over fifth-placed Liverpool, the Magpies are inching closer to securing a spot in the Champions League. This weekend, they will host Arsenal, who are currently in second position.

Newcastle will certainly need to make plans, and with probable Champions League qualifying coming earlier than expected this season, attention will quickly turn to how they can prepare their team to fight with Europe’s top teams.

Majority shareholders PIF are the wealthiest owners in the Premier League and have already spent nearly a quarter of a billion pounds on players since taking over the club in late 2021.

Earlier this week, 90min reported that PIF was interested in signing Brazilian Neymar to the team because they believed it would be within their financial reach. Additionally, meeting FFP requirements for Champions League qualification will increase spending capacity.

In spite of being connected to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the same week, Howe is still cautious about potential targets and the funding for them.

“Since the takeover, naturally everyone has assumed that the biggest names in world football will be going to Newcastle. Now, we’ve not recruited in that way. Financially, we can’t recruit that way at the moment,” said Howe ahead of the weekend clash with Arsenal.

“But also, we have to bring the right people and the right players into the group. I will say that the transfer market is such a complex decision. You can’t just pick a name and bring them in – there’s got to be a lot of thought goes into what we’re doing, both financially and looking at the players.

“It doesn’t frustrate me because the players you mention are incredible players. I don’t waste any time over speculation. I know what direction I want to take the team in.”

Five managers have been shortlisted by the Premier League for the Barclays Manager of the Month award for April.

Unai Emery, Pep Guardiola, Roy Hodgson, Eddie Howe and Gary O’Neil have all been nominated in recognition of their teams’ positive results over the past four weeks or so.

Emery, the manager of Aston Villa, is a strong favourite to win the award after leading the Villains to five victories and a tie until Sunday’s loss at Manchester United.

Manchester City under Guardiola are in charge of the title fight, and the Catalan’s contribution has been acknowledged. City overtook league leaders Arsenal, who are currently one point behind after playing one more game, thanks to five victories in five games.

Hodgson’s return to Crystal Palace has been almost too good to believe, guiding the Eagles away from the relegation zone with four wins from six games, playing some fantastic football in the process.

Howe’s Newcastle, who earned 18 out of a possible 21 points in April, are about to announce the return of Champions League football at St James’ Park. The 6-1 demolition of Tottenham was one particularly noteworthy victory.

With key victories over Leicester, Spurs, Southampton, and Leeds, O’Neil has guided Bournemouth away from relegation concerns and into the security of mid-table.

Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, who has won the award four times this season, was not included on the shortlist. Six points were earned by his Arsenal team in five April contests.

According to reports, Newcastle United have agreed on a fee with Everton for Anthony Gordon. The two clubs have agreed to a base price of £40 million, with add-ons that might bring the total cost of the transaction to £45 million.

Personal terms still are now being discussed as Gordon’s move to St James’ Park edges closer.

Gordon, who arrived at Everton’s training ground on Friday morning, made it clear to the club that he intended to depart within the current transfer window.

The 21-year-old had not shown up for the previous three days, despite Newcastle’s increasing efforts to recruit him.

According to Sky Sports News, the forward was not present on Tuesday owing to a planned absence but did not appear on Wednesday and Thursday due to unforeseen reasons.

According to sources, he did not train with the rest of his teammates at Finch Farm on Friday, but Everton insists he did.

Gordon is regarded by Newcastle as a versatile front-line player who can play in a variety of positions.

Eddie Howe’s side were rebuffed with an inquiry in the summer but have retained an interest.

Chelsea and Everton had important discussions on Gordon’s availability during the summer transfer window.

At the time, Chelsea was willing to spend £60 million to lure him to Stamford Bridge and was considered one of Thomas Tuchel’s top targets.

Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton has admitted to driving under the influence of alcohol and was given a £29,000 fine and a 12-month driving restriction.

The 26-year-old received the penalty on Thursday at Newcastle Magistrates Court for what happened on January 12.

At 01:20 GMT, the Brazilian was taken into custody after police stopped his Mercedes G-Wagen on Ponteland Road in Newcastle. He was discovered to be over the legal limit of 35mg with a reading of 50mg per 100ml of breath on the scene, which decreased to 43mg at the Forth Banks police station.

Joelinton’s fine and ban, which will be reduced to nine months if a rehabilitation program is successfully completed, were imposed by Judge Paul Currer after accounting for the player’s £43,000 ($53,300) weekly salary, a £2,000 ($2,500) surcharge, and £85 ($105) in costs.

“You placed yourself in real jeopardy and it could have had disastrous consequences for the lives of others,” Currer told the player. “I sincerely hope you have learned from this mistake and we don’t see you in this court again.”

The Brazilian has been a standout performer for Eddie Howe in 2022–23, scoring four goals and dishing out two assists so year. His most recent goal came in Tuesday’s tight League Cup semifinal triumph over Southampton.

Howe said on the matter back on January 13: “I think he understands his responsibilities. We’re now in a position where we’re supporting him, and we also understand as a football club the seriousness of the situation.”

The Newcastle boss did not drop Joelinton after the charge, but the player’s barrister told the court that he is now set to face disciplinary action from within the club.

Newcastle are next in action in their semi-final second-leg, hosting Southampton at St. James’ Park on Tuesday.

According to reports, Newcastle United are optimistic about sealing a deal to sign Anthony Gordon, and talks are progressing with Everton over a deal.

The England Under-21 forward is willing to move this month, according to sources, and a move to Newcastle would be appealing to him.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has insisted the club are doing their homework on the player, and 90min revealed earlier this week that reports on Gordon were very good.

The player caught the Magpies’ attention last summer, and they now believe he may be the perfect addition as they attempt to strengthen their team in preparation for the second half of the season.

Everton is expected to approve a deal worth close to £40 million, and Newcastle would prefer to pay £30 million upfront and an additional £10 million in add-ons.

Everton continues to be interested in the player despite rejecting Chelsea’s offer of £45 million in the summer. While Newcastle wants to bring Gordon in right away, the Blues are exploring an offer that would allow Gordon to stay on loan at Goodison Park to aid them in their fight against relegation.

Speaking after Newcastle’s victory over Southampton in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday, Howe insisted he was not aware of how the prospective deal for Gordon was progressing.

“Honestly, I’ve got no idea [whether there have been developments over the Gordon deal]. I’ve been preparing for the game, so I’ve got no idea. But I wouldn’t comment on individual players anyway,” he said.

“I’ve got no idea if we’ve got any closer to anything, but we’re actively looking, I have said that. But as of tonight, I have no update.”

Newcastle is also working on further potential deals. Hakim Ziyech of Chelsea, who has already been told he can leave this month, is still of interest to them.

It’s interesting to note that Allan Saint-Maximin has not been that pleased with Newcastle’s interest in a new forward.

The Frenchman’s season has been ruined by injuries, but even though he has been healthy since December, he hasn’t made a start since August.

Saint-Maximin had been seeking a new contract last year, but considering that his current one goes through 2026, Newcastle never really gave it any thought. The decision to allow him to depart is still being debated, but we understand that moving this January seems doubtful.
