The Nigerian Music Industry is blessed with a vibrant rap history and over the decades the rap culture has evolved dishing out prolific rappers and collaborations.

Collaborations and cosigns which are one of the core traits of rap music, have seen Rappers team up with either their fellow rappers or singers to dish out hits.

Over the years, this partnership has bare fruitful hits that even to date, will always stand the test of time.

Ghost Mode- Phyno, Olamide

The alliance of Phyno and Olamide on this song didn’t only bring two tribes of the indigenous rap art together but set the foundation of a long-term friendship.

Both artists are now at the peak of their game and have released a collaborative album. However, if you go back to the commencement of all their good deeds, ‘Ghost mode’ is the single that marked the passage of time and set Phyno on the way to glory.

Phyno released “Ghost mode” off his “No Guts No Glory” album, which is a blend of Igbo and Yoruba rap. The 4-minute track, which features Olamide, was well-liked by the public and garnered widespread broadcast not only in Nigeria but also around the world.

At the 2012 Headies Awards and the 2013 Nigeria Entertainment Awards, the song won Best Collabo. Clarence Peters shot and directed the music video.

Local rappers- Reminisce, Phyno, Olamide

With the rise of indigenous rappers, Reminisce, Phyno, and Olamide, who were at the forefront of the trend, stepped forth to honour the occasion. The resulting track caused a stir in the music industry, inspiring a slew of subs and shoots.

“Local rappers” was an anthem that made English-speaking rappers realize that Hip-Hop had evolved and that punchlines wasn’t the only thing selling rap in Nigeria.

Joor remix- Jahbless, Ice Prince, Reminisce, Durella, Ruggedman & Eldee

In 2011, Jahbless put together a group of artists to make rap music. The song featured Ice Prince, Reminisce, Ruggedman, and eLDee and even Durella added a verse to the mix.

The video, which was shot in an open-air boxing ring saw the artists go against themselves in pairs. The song was one of music producer, Sarz’s earliest works that were popular in the Industry.

Jagaban remix- Ycee, Olamide

By 2015, Ycee was a popping artist who had earned audiences with “Jagaban” and ‘Omo Alhaji“. When he enlisted Olamide on the remix, “Jagaban“, his career went through the roof.

It was a commercially successful song and this was the song that introduced people to Ycee, the rapper.

123 Remix- DJ Neptune, Dagrin, M.I Abaga, Naeto C

In 2010 DJ Neptune released the record 1,2,3 which featured M.I, Naeto C and the late Dagrin.

“123 (Remix)” was released in 2010 and was preceded by its original song from the previous year, which featured only M.I, who delivered a head-spinning verse loaded with his unique wordplay and flow.

By the time the remix was released, it had grown in importance, not only because of the additional elements but also because of the way it captured the pinnacle of Nigerian hip-hop and its limitless possibilities.

Each of the featured musicians was a well-known rapper at the time, both in terms of precision and economic value, and “123 (Remix)” provided an opportunity for them to flex alongside one another in a way that was both regal and free.

King Kong remix- Vector, Phyno, Reminisce, Classiq, Uzi

Vector is unquestionably one of Nigeria’s most talented rap artists. Vector paved his way to being a favourite of music fans by consistently generating soundbars.

In 2015, he released one of his commercially successful and best works, King Kong.

That same year, a remix of “King Kong” was released, and it became a great hit, surpassing its original.

Despite the fact that the song has two remixes, one of which is by Sarkodie, the first remix is the one that has blown up speakers owing to its diversity.

The song is the second official single from Vector’s album “King Kong,” and it features four skilled rappers: Phyno, Reminisce, Classiq, and Uzi.

Every Rapper came through, delivering bars that proved why they were the best among best.

Delicious- 2shotz, Big Lo

The instrumental from Beenie Man’s ‘Dude‘ was sampled a lot all around the world, and it became the foundation for a lot of outstanding songs. Nigeria has hers, thanks to 2shotz and Biglo’s famous track “Delicious.”

The track was taken from 2shotz’s magnum opus album, “Pirated Copy.”

When it first came out, this song was a smash hit. It ruled the radio, the clubs, and the streets. The hunting Igbo flute and well-laced percussion in “Delicious” keep you on the dance floor.

As a result of their efforts, the duo was the first recipient of the Hip Hop World Awards, which are now known as the Headies. They took home the award for best collaboration. ‘Delicious’ was a truly delectable song.

Too much- DJ Jimmy JATT ft Blaise, Sasha P, Kemistry, B.O.U.Q.U.I

The “The Definition” album by DJ Jimmy Jatt is considered one of Nigeria’s best albums. This single was one of the causes for that. ‘Too much,’ a track fueled by girl power, features Kemistry, Sasha P, Blaise, Kemistry, and B.O.U.Q.U.I.

This song reminds one that even Female emcees were as powerful as their male counterparts.

Nobody Test Me- Jesse Jagz, M.I Abaga, Ice Prince

The Choc Boiz, comprised of Jesse Jagz, M.I, and Ice Prince, were unquestionably Nigeria’s best rap artists during their peak.

The group was unstoppable as hit single after hit single rolled off the label’s conveyor belt. ‘Nobody Test me,’ a track from Jesse Jagz’s “Jag Of All Tradez” album, is still considered one of their best works.

Paying Tribute to someone or people who are dead isn’t a strange concept in the Nigerian Music Industry as there are artists who use their songs to express how they feel about the situation.

The 20th of October 2021 marks the one year anniversary of the Lekki Tollgate shooting and many people are in their feelings about the traumatic incident.

To ease the mood, we compiled a list of Nigerian Tribute Songs That still hit hard to date

Tribute to Dagrin(My Pain)- Naija All Stars

On April 22, 2010, the Nigerian music world/country as a whole lost a great legend, Olaitan Oladapo Olaonipekun a.k.a. Dagrin. After a gruesome car accident, he passed away.

This traumatic event spawned a song, which went on to become Nigeria’s most popular tribute song.

Artists such as Eldee, Sheyman, Reminisce, Durella, Banky W, Waje, Omawumi, Ruggedman, Lord of Ajasa, Posley, and others collaborated on the song ‘Tribute To Dagrin.’ For months and years to follow, the Hip Hop-based ballad topped charts and hearts.

Ashes- M.I Abaga

This song is dedicated to four University of Port Harcourt students who were killed by a mob on October 5, 2012. The horrible occurrence elicited a variety of reactions, but MI’s effort stands out.

You could hear the hurt hidden in the words in between M.I’s inquiries for everyone concerned, the society’s tolerance for such sins, and the dark mood set from the beginning of the song brought to the fore with spoken-word-style narration.

Olorun Mi – Tiwa Savage

Many hearts and earphones couldn’t thank Tiwa Savage enough for recording a memorial song for all the great we’ve lost over the years.

With this song, Tiwa gives a whole new meaning to tributes, and the video for the same song is nothing short of heavenly.

To this day, the song is one of the few that both young and old can sing word for word… Let’s just say Tiwa brought her A-game on this single with her voice.

Iwe- Flavour Nabania [Tribute To MC Loph]

Prior to his death in 2011, MC Loph was known to have a strong friendship with celebrity vocalist, Flavour. It was unsurprising when Flavour dropped a tribute in honour of the Igbo rapper.

The song titled ‘Iwe‘ saw the highly sought after Flavour simply let out his emotions, resulting in millions of hearts flocking to his side.

20.10.20- Burna Boy

Burna Boy has garnered fans thanks to his songs which are either love themed or talking about a socio-political problem facing Africa. However, he won hearts after dropping “20.10.20“, a song dedicated to the lives lost at the October 20 Lekki Tollgate shooting.

The Nigerian army had opened fire at innocent citizens protesting against police brutality at the Lekki Tollgate which led to outrage not just in the Country but outside the nation too.

To commemorate that day, Burna on a Micheal Jackson sampled beat pours his heart out and vents his frustrations about the incident.

Every 17th of March is the birthday of the popular Nigerian producer, Sarz whose slang, “Sarz on the beat” tells you that the song you are about to listen to would be a fun ride. The producer has hit songs to his credit.

Born Osabuohien Osaretin, Sarz was born in Benin, Edo state.  His first full credit production work was for Lord of Ajasa‘s “See Drama” in 2007.

I remember vividly when this song came out, everyone in my area would rap along to the song, even those whose voice should be banned would be feeling like a rapper.

From the crazy beat to the hilarious lyrics, Jahbless, Iceprince, Reminisce, Eldee, Durella, Ruggedman and Sarz made 2010 a fun year to remember.

8. Sarz ft Wizkid- Samba(2012)

After producing songs for artists, Sarz decided to produce his own personal song, Beat of life(Samba) and we thank God he did.

Samba did well when it was released as it was during that period the ‘Azonto’ dance was popular. Wizkid‘s popularity and his lyrics also contributed to its success, a fact Sarz himself acknowledged. Even now, you can’t hear Samba and not want to dance.

7. Wizkid ft Femi Kuti- Jaiye jaiye (2013)

In this song, Sarz proved that no matter the genre of song you want him to produce, he will murder it.

Sarz took Fela‘s slow afrobeat style and turned it into a danceable beat. Wizkid was joined by Femi Kuti who played the saxophone in the song.

6. Goldie- Don’t touch my body (2010)

Goldie (may her soul rest in peace) was considered the lady Gaga of Nigeria because of her eccentric way of life, she was an amazing singer who has the voice and the class to deliver any song. So it’s no surprise she was able to deliver on the Sarz produced track.

5. Wizkid ft Drake- Come closer (2017)

Wizkid featured American Rapper, Drake on ‘Come Closer’. The song is smooth and danceable at the same time and of course, Sarz proved he is nobody mate when it comes to producing Songs.

4. Niniola- Maradona (2017)

Though Maradona wasn’t the first song Sarz had produced for Niniola, the song was the breakthrough that Niniola needed to launch her career.

The song was so good that International DJ, DJ Snake did a remix of the song which he called ‘Maradona Riddim’ and Beyonce had to sample it on one of the songs from her “Lion King: The Gift” Soundtrack.

3. Niniola- Sicker (2017)

This song is proof that Niniola and Sarz are such a perfect combo. ‘Sicker’ was released after the massive success of Maradona in the market, even though it didn’t surpass the success of its predecessor, it was a hit in its own right.

2. Skepta ft Wizkid- Energy(Stay far away) (2018)

While Energy might not really be called a danceable song, you can’t still help but move whenever the song comes on.  Sarz proved he is capable of producing anything and you just can’t help but love it.

In the early 2000’s Don Jazzy and D’banj came together to form one of Nigeria’s best Label, Mo’hits records. The label boasted of acts like Wande Coal, D’Prince, Dr Sid, K-Switch.

Bracket feat Wizkid – Girl

Bracket is a Nigerian Afropop and R&B music duo composed of Obumneme Ali a.k.a. Smash and Nwachukwu Ozioko a.k.a. Vast. Bracket started as a three-man music group before a member called Bistop dropped out.

‘Girl’ is a number off their 2011 released album titled Cupid Stories released under the Ape Planet Imprint.

The song which features Wizkid was a smash hit topping charts at the time of its release.

Brymo – Ara

Ara by Brymo is one of the few records that topped the Nigerian charts in 2011. Ara was one of the lead singles off Brymo’s 2012 released The Son Of a Kapenta which was his second album but the first under the Chocolate City Imprint.

Dr Sid feat D’Banj – Pop Something

In April 2009, following the release of Wande Coal‘s debut album Mushin to Mo’Hits, Don Jazzy began work on Dr SID’s album.

Don Jazzy decided to create a new sound for Dr SID who was known as predominantly a Rap artiste and decided to have more singing on the album, as well as giving the album Pop feel.

This led to the release of SID’s first debut album, ‘Turning Point‘ and off the album was ‘Pop Something’ which was an instant hit. Till now, kids who grew up listening to the song can sing the lyrics word for word.

D’banj – Fall in Love

D’banj is one of Nigeria’s iconic music stars thanks to his evergreen classics. The singer dominated the music scene for almost a decade.

In 2008, he released his third studio album, ‘Entertainer‘ which was successful commercially and birthed hits one of which is the romantic ballad, ‘Fall in Love‘.

The music video featured legendary Nigerian Actress, Genevieve Nnaji which sparked dating rumors between the two.

The “King Kong” album housed “Julie,” and three ‘eye-catching’ collabos. “Never Felt” with D’banj (everyone wanted the Koko, then), “Shorty” that had American superstar, Akon and “Won Le Nu” featuring Dagrin. The album was a success, and… the rest is history!

Shank didn’t dwindle, he just left the scene. No signs of a comeback. And all that’s left of Shank are just memories of his heydays… Does he even cross anyone’s mind, these days? Is he anyone’s favourite? Do new artists look up to him? Is he done making music? Is he going to come back?

That’s all that is left of the superstar. Questions, just questions!

Born Chinedu Naze, the now-35-year-old singer, was known not only for his works with Akon, D’banj and others, but also for the influences he got from the legendary maestro, Fela. His sound is predominantly dancehall/reggae, hence the popular phrase; “before there was ever Burna Boy, there was Shank!”

In Durella’s case, he never got the chance to get to the Topmost, but he was a star. Some call him “one-hit wonder”, but of a truth, Durella had many hits. And, he was one of the artists that held Nigeria in ’08. It was the year, he had dropped his debut album, “King Of The Zanga.”

The singer, born Oluwadamilare Okulaja, had by chance, met Execs of TC Record, while he was performing at a show. And, later, they had signed him. Back in 2006. Prior to the album, in 2008, he already had hits like “Enu O Se” and “Shayo,” which disturbed the airwaves, that year. And, so it was just normal he dropped the album.

When the Album dropped, in February, it wasn’t a disappointment. With mad jams like “Wiskolowiska”, ” Shayo”, “Queen Of My Zanga”, “Enu O Se” and “Gunners Anthem”, Durella went from just a regular artist, to a well-respected pop star.

Although, fate quickly took it’s toll on the singer, as his fame began to dwindle, right after, today we still have a lot to remember him for. If notfor the ’08 album, we can remember his 2011 collabo with Wizkid, called “GaGa”, or for the D’banj song he was featured on. He’s worked with artists like Timaya, Terry G and more.

Even though, unlike his “sound-alike”, D’banj, he’s not a star anymore, in 2008, he did drop a bang album, we all loved.

Mp3Bullet.ng presents you 18 of the albums turning 10 (or may have turned 10) in 2018. That means those albums are 10 years old! Some are still fresh, some are almost forgotten, but all made 2008 memorable. Oya come make we go.

1. M.I ABAGA – TALK ABOUT IT

M.I, born Jude Abaga, stormed the scene in 2006, holding down everywhere from Jos, his hometown, to Lagos. His single “Crowd Mentality” started off being popular in J-Town, before “Safe,“ which had Djinee (and sampled all hot pop song then), came. “Safe” changed the game, in a “scary” way. Still from the album, a shot called “Fast Money Fast Cars,” first introduced Wizkid, before Wizkid went on to become Nigeria’s hottest. In many ways, the album was a ground-breaking one. And, these days, it’d take the intervention of Afro beats, for a rapper to sell as much as M.I sold, then. Even M.I can’t remake the magic. Nigeria’s hip-hop community won’t be forgetting “Talk About It” anytime soon.

2. 9ICE – GONGO ASO

9ice definitely had to do a whole album called “ID Cabasa!” In 2008, 9ice worked with ID Cabasa, and he made the best album of that year. The albums birthed hits we won’t forget including “Gongo Aso,” “Pamurogo,” “Party Rider,” “Street Credibility” feat. 2Baba and more. Now, who says 9ice ain’t G.O.A.T?

3. D’BANJ – THE ENTERTAINER

D’banj, before 2008, was a star, no doubt. BUT, “The Entertainer,” marked a big era for the pop singer – and, yeah, he’s not just a singer, he’s an entertainer. The Entertainer. And, this is one of the biggest albums in Nigeria in the last two decades.

Hit singles like “Mo gbono feli feli,” “Olorun Maje,” “Kimon,” “Suddenly,” and the monster hit “Fall In Love,” all came from the album. Infact the whole 10 tracks on the album, were hits. And, it was in that same year, 2008!

4. 2FACE – THE UNSTOPPABLE

2face does RnB, really, but he was the one who really championed pop, in those days. He has a lot of pop records, to say the least. And “The Unstoppable,” further showed us that Innocent Idibia was unstoppable.

Due to some brouhaha, the album was poorly distributed in 2008, which prompted a re-release in 2010. It was called “The Unstoppable (International Edition).” 7 tracks from the original were added to the new one.

“Enter the place,” was from the album. The hit “Rain Drops,” too. And “Excuse Me Sister.” What an album!

5. TIMAYA – GIFT AND GRACE

Egberi Papa 1 of Bayelsa is a veteran, too. Timaya isn’t all these new dancehall acts’ mate kwanu. His album “Gift And Grace,” came in 2008. It has 14 songs which included hits like “I don blow,” “Dem Mama Anthem,” “Hey,” “God You Are 2 Much,” and “Ogologomma Remix.”

It was a big year for Tim.

6. NAETO C – U KNOW MY P

Kini big deal, kini big deal, shebi shebi we’re on fire…

One of the earliest dope rap records, in Nigeria. Naeto C was almost written off as an Ajebo, who’s not fit for the industry. C wasn’t having any of that. And this album “U Know My P,” took him to greater heights. Nigeria paid attention. “Kini Big Deal,” which featured Ikechukwu was sort of the hottest rap record in town, at that time. Other hot tracks include “The Devil Is A Liar” and “This Is What I Do.”

7. FAZE – ORIGINALITY

Just like D’banj, and 2face, Faze had his third studio album released in 2008. And, it’s success was undeniable. Even after the break of Plantashun Boiz, he could still hold it down solo. Not to forget, how the album was anticipated, and it came in October.

Hot tracks like “Originality,” “Play Ball” and “Story Of My Life” managed to gain prominence, then.

8. BANKY W – MR CAPABLE

This was RnB at it’s peak. The EME head honcho, packaged 14 banging tracks for the album. The guest features was one of a kind with Danny L, Sauce Kid, eLDee, Donnie and Tynie. It was a good time for Banky.

And his nick was apparently from this Era.

9. iLLBliss – DAT IBO BOY

In hip hop today, Illbliss is still one of the most underrated. Probably ‘cos we still have him around. The Igbo boy, who was a member of one of the pioneering rap groups Thoroughbreds, is one of the best lyricists and his flow is cool, too. Revered from the streets of Lagos, to the nooks of Enugu.

His album “Dat Ibo Boy,” is 10 years, and you won’t forget “U Go Wound,” or that “Enuf Space” which had Terry G on. Or will you?

10. eLDee – BIG BOY

In the year 2008, if anybody deserves to be called “Big boy,” it was Eldee. The big boy of hip-hop. What do we call him 10 years after? Big man, I guess?

The album had songs like “Bosi Gbangba,” “Big Boy” and “Go.” It boasts of appearances from Banky W, Iceberg Slim, Keno, Proto and Rukus. Big boy, indeed!

11. DURELLA – KING OF ZANGA

Somehow, Durella’s career sank, before he could reach the heights D’banj reached. And some call him a “one-hit wonder.” BUT, still, he has an album (King Of Zanga) which was commercially a hit.

The singer born, Oluwadamilare Okulaja (nothing close to Durella), released the album in 2008. And, it has hot songs like “Enu Ose,” “Shayo,” “Queen Of My Zanga,” and that “Wizkolowiska!”

12. BLACKFACE NAIJA – ME, MUSIQ AND I

Blackface, like 2face and Faze, also dropped an album, “Me, Musiq And I,” and it was critically a dope album. Maybe even better than Faze and 2face’s own? Maybe not. But then, he still made something iconic with that piece.

13. LORD OF AJASA – SECOND TURNING BY THE RIGHT

Today, you may respect Dagrin, as the progenitor of Yoruba rap, and Olamide as the one who took it commercial. BUT, you can’t deny it, Lord Of Ajasa rapped in yoruba. 2008, his album came and it has hit singles like “Le Fenu So” (feat. Konga, 9ice, Jahbless), “Esa Lo Bade” and “N’Gba Tawa Ni Kekere.”

14. KLEVER JAY – THE BEGINNING

Klever Jay ain’t a popular act in today’s pop, but sometimes around 2008, he had two singles that scattered the dance floors; “Koni Koni Luv,” and “Igboro Ti Daru.” If you don’t know those two songs, you weren’t in Naija, in 2008. They were from his album, The Beginning, released that same year.

15. MODE9 – THE PARADIGM SHIFT

Modo might not have made hits from albums, but he did prove “we no fit sell hardcore for Naija men” wrong. Extraordinary hip-hop at it’s best, the Yoruba MC delivers one of the best rap projects in Nigeria, ever. And yeah, he sold! It won’t be nice to ignore the fact that he actually had top-notch guests; Banky W, Sound Sultan, Eve Urrah, Mallam Spicey, Bez and more. “Death Blow,” that amazing beef song aimed at Ruggedy Baba was from the album, too.

16. J MARTINS – GET SERIOUS

Being authentic and unique can really get you to heights you might not reach by aligning with the crowd. Doing what is called “urban highlife,” isn’t the best of stuffs, then, but it did made J. Martins a star.

His debut, “Get Serious,” which had singles like “Good Or Bad,” “Cool Temper” and “So Fly,” was a commercial and critical success. It’s 10 years, this year.

17. SOUND SULTAN – SS4

Call him alternative or whatever, Sound Sultan remains one of the bests, ever. SS4 is his fourth studio album, and it has the jam “Aimo Asiko,” which featured 9ice and Lord Of Ajasa.

18. PRAIZ – P.R.I.D.E

Before “Rich and Famous,” Praiz had an album you probably never heard of. And it’s 10 years, since then. The album called “P.R.I.D.E” housed 9 tracks.
