Donny van de Beek, a Manchester United player who has been out for the past four months, claimed to be “not far away” from getting back in shape.

The Netherlands international midfielder last played for the Red Devils on January 3 in a 3-0 Premier League victory against Bournemouth. He has been dealing with a long-term knee injury.

The 26-year-old has had a difficult recovery process that has required him to miss a Carabao Cup victory and the 2023 FA Cup final, but he can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Van de Beek has told MUTV when asked for an update in his situation, with the Dutchman recently returning to the gym: “I’m busy with my recovery after my injury and everything is going well. It’s hard to give you a time but we have to see how everything goes. I’m doing a lot of gym work and getting closer to being on the pitch, which is positive. I’m not far away.”

Van de Beek has only made 10 appearances this season after finding it difficult to get consistent playing time after moving to United from Ajax in 2020.

He admits that watching on from afar has been tough, adding on his role as a cheerleader in the stands: “It’s a bit strange – of course you want to be there with the lads but it is what it is so I’m supporting them from the side. They are so involved – they’re always asking how everything is, how the knee is. They’re really good lads and they support me, so that’s a good feeling.”
Van de Beek could feel as though the season is coming to an end too soon with only seven games left for United to play this season. It is uncertain whether he will still be at Old Trafford in 2023–24 as speculation over his future persists.

Manchester United have given Marcel Sabitzer his squad number as they unveil the first pictures of the new signing.

Marcel Sabitzer will wear the No15 shirt after signing the midfielder on transfer deadline day.

Following the injuries to Christian Eriksen and Donny van de Beek, the Austrian came on loan from Bayern Munich.

United announced Sabitzer’s squad number on Thursday, with the No15 most recently worn by Andreas Pereira.

In recent years, a number of players who were beloved by the fans have worn the jersey, most notably Nemanja Vidic, Jesper Blomqvist, Karel Proborsky, and, during their early tenures in the team, both David Beckham and Paul Scholes.

Erik ten Hag said of his new addition: “We are really happy with that transfer because we need it after Donny van de Beek dropped out, now Christian Eriksen for a longer time and also, I think for a short time, Scott McTominay is also not available.

“So that gives us a shortage of midfield players. But then to bring a quality player in on deadline day that is difficult, and we got this opportunity.”

On the day of the deadline, Sabitzer flew in from Munich and said he did not need to second-guess joining United.

He told the club website: “Sometimes in life you have to make quick and important decisions.

“From the moment I heard about this opportunity I knew it was right for me. I am a competitive player; I want to win and help the club achieve its aims this season.

Despite playing for only 30 minutes during the 2022–23 season, Donny van de Beek believes and revealed how he can “help” Manchester United.

The midfielder, who represents the Netherlands at the international level, has had difficulty maintaining a consistent role with the Red Devils since joining them from Ajax in 2020. Last season, he spent time on loan at Everton away from Old Trafford.

The arrival of fellow countryman Erik ten Hag as the coach has failed to deliver a reversal in fortune for the 25-year-old but, after overcoming another injury setback, he feels ready to make a positive contribution in the final third of the field.

Van de Beek has made three cameo Premier League appearances for United this season off the bench, and he also participated as a substitute in a match against FC Sheriff on the continent. His appearance against FC Sheriff at the end of October gave him his first playing time since August.

Van de Beek has told United’s official website ahead of a potential Europa League outing against Real Sociedad: “To be injured is the most difficult thing for a player. You want to be on the pitch, around the guys in the stadium, feel the grass and, yeah, it’s a hard time if you are injured. I’m happy to be back and have to stay fit for a longer time and just try to help the team.

“I feel great, I feel good and what I’m saying is I just need to keep going and, if chances come, I have to take them. It [playing an attacking role] is also one of the points how I can maybe help the team, play in between the lines and make my runs with the ball, give some passes. I just do my best and have to stay fit and just help the team.”

Van de Beek remains under contract with the Red Devils until 2025 but needs to earn favour quickly if he is to prove deserving of an extended stay in Manchester – with each passing transfer window bringing with it fresh rounds of speculation regarding his future.
