Nigerian music artist, Osayamwen Donald, popularly known as Djinee, has explained in detail why money doesn’t increase one’s quality of life in Nigeria.

The singer has been used to illustrate why wealth in Nigeria doesn’t necessarily improve one’s standard of living.

Djinee groaned, recalling a recent incident in which he commuted through Lagos over the previous holiday season.

He made the point that the unfortunate circumstances currently destroying the country affect both the rich and the poor.

In a series of tweets, Djinee wrote;

I can finally tweet this. Fri/Sat, I was out for 16hrs. 9 of those were spent in traffic. 4hrs to the location & 5hrs back. “Back” wasn’t even home cos i had to find shelter @ a friend’s. Couldn’t drive any longer. And some people experience this everyday. This is not life.

You have to possess a higher level of reasoning to know that money doesn’t increase your quality of life in naija. In that traffic, there were benzes & ranges, all as frustrated as everyone else in traffic. All of us losing productive time. Our health collectively taking a hit!

I asked myself how long I can take this. The first night, I was still in traffic at midnight. Finally out of it, driving in pitch black darkness still on terrible roads in the rain fearing for my safety because this is naija, this is Lagos!

This is no political tweet. Lagos is not working. Nigeria is not working. Ask those that have to scoop flood water from their houses, replace car engines. Ask the families in Owo, Borno, Adamawa, Kaduna etc who like their counterparts in the east have lost thousands to terrorism.

Lagos has become so capitalist that there has been no thought given to proper urban planning. Just keep selling! Fuel stations jostling for space with residential houses on tiny roads. Dangote refinary built & half the road leading to it is a mess. Agbero is normal. A mega city!

Our bar of success has been set so low. That’s why we’ll see all these & more & applaud. Either that or we’re plain stupid. Or worse still, our hunger has left our brains comatose, so we’ll prefer the crumbs they (politicians) pacify us with than seek a total change!

In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king. You need to legally travel out to see what it means to have a quality life for less. If you’re well travelled & you still see the mess here as normal & support the administrators of this anomaly, then you are the biggest PHOOL!

Nigerian renowned musician Osayamwen Donald, popularly known as Djinee, has revealed how he avoids becoming involved in scandals.

Djinee is a musician who is rarely in the news unless it is related to his music career, and he is well known for his hit song “EGO.”

The singer made this known in an interview with Sunday Scoop, where he noted that it is intentional.

He said, “No one is a saint. I have just tried to keep my circle small. I am that artiste that came out looking to sell only my music and nothing else. I just make and sell music. There is nothing else I want to sell. Of course, my image is important; that is why I will try to dress well.

Some people (entertainers) want to sell other things because they think those other things will get people talking (about them), and they consider that to be more important than the ‘core’ work they do. However, I am not judging them; they are doing their thing. But for me, the beauty and essence of my music far outweighs other things. There is nothing I have done wrong that is interesting.”

Speaking on his current projects, he said,

“I have been recording and releasing music. I have a song titled, Pamper (remix), on which I featured MI Abaga and Immaculate. I have also been doing a bit of travelling in and outside the country for performances and recording, but that is basically the life of an artiste.

For those that thought I had quit music, they are wrong. Thankfully, everything is online now, so you (fans) can always know when I release new music.”

On his Twitter account, Djinee stated that the government does not address issues unless they directly affect their lives and livelihoods, mentioning the COVID-19 epidemic and the EndSARS demonstration as instances.

According to him, the present administration will only wipe out bandits when it has a direct impact on their lives and family members.

He said:

“The government never attacks any issue (good and bad) except it has a direct impact on their lives and livelihoods. Ebola, COVID, End SARS protest, crypto etc, they acted decisively. They’ll treat bandits with kid gloves until their lives and that of their families are in danger.

“All it takes for the government to wipe out this menace is for the bandits and herdsmen to take the lives of one of their own, “mistakenly”. Till then they can continue to brazenly kidnap and maim ordinary Nigerians for all the government cares.”

In addition, This will be the second time in months that the music star will be chiding the government over the state of the nation

Hip-Hop in Africa has been a growing genre, evolving and finding its place in history; for M.I Abaga, it was more than just been the best but redefining a genre and leading a new reign of rappers.

Prior to M.I’s entrance into the music scene in 2006, the Nigerian Hip-Hop community had rappers like Ruggedman, Modenine, Eedris Abdulkareem, Eldee among others.

However, there was a switch that came with his entry into the Industry; the rap genre was beginning to enter a new phase that he would lead as its messiah.

The Beginning

You can’t mention Best African rappers without M.I Abaga

When Jude ‘M.I’ Abaga released his Crowd Mentality single in 2006, he started his ascent into the list of Africa’s Best Rappers book.

Nigerian hip-hop heads applauded the novelty of his concept, the audacity of his humorous lyrics crammed into bars, and a fair dose of social satire.

While “Crowd Mentality” was the John the Baptist, wetting an already fertile soil, his Djinee-assisted “Safe” was the seed that blossomed into a fruitful venture for him.

His debut album, “Talk About It“, which was released on December 11, 2008, was an acknowledgement that the hip-hop torch held by Hip-Hop rulers such as Modenine and Ruggedman could be passed on to him.

That recognition showed itself in him winning Best Hip Hop and Best New Act at the 2009 MTV Africa Music Awards, as well as being nominated for Best International Act at the 2010 BET Awards the following year.

What would follow was a couple of projects, some of which are classics.

Impact and Evolution

You can’t mention Best African rappers without M.I Abaga

In 2010, M.I teamed up with Flavour on the Hip-Hop/Highlife tune, “Number One” where he bragged about his prowess and what makes him special.

When you look at his career overall and the impact he has had on Hip-Hop in Nigeria, his lyrics on that song hold some water.

With the release of his debut album “Talk About It“, the Nigerian Hip-Hop scene witnessed the birth of a new star and forever altered the Hip-hop scene in Nigeria.

The album not only put him on the radar, but it also helped him break into the elite class of rappers with a mean pen game and faultless delivery, cementing his status as one of the most influential rappers of all time.

“Talk About It” is the key to the glory age in terms of cultural effect, success, ground-breaking moments, and just challenging the status quo.

The album’s popularity paved the way for a new generation of rappers to enter the industry, confident that they could reach a larger, and more significantly, responsive audience with their music.

However, “Talk about It” wasn’t M.I’s last bus stop, it was more like a foundation- M.I followed up with several projects numbering about ten (3 Solo albums, 1 Compilation album, 4 Mixtapes, 2 EPs).

His evolution is also seen on every project where he keeps trying and experimenting and while sometimes this has caused some hitches, most of the time, it has earned him more fans and boosted his OG status.

One of these notable evolution was his sophomore album, “MI 2: The Movie” which was released in 2010. On This album, M.I plays the main protagonist of an action film one can liken to Tom Cruise’s “Mission Impossible.”

The evolution of the Nigerian music industry has witnessed a coarse amount of standard rap albums over the past 2 decades, the metrics will be critically relying on the impacts of a rap album on the mainstream.

Reflecting on the slippery nature of the industry, falling off relevance and being absent in the music conversations, however, below are the artists we keep wondering and wishing they get the buzz back again;

Cynthia Morgan

Cynthia Ikponmwenosa Morgan popularly known as Cynthia Morgan but changed her name to Madrina, is a Nigerian songwriter and singer, then regarded as the Dancehall Queen and now yet to be replaced by any female.

She gained dominance in 2014 after dropping her hit single ‘Don’t Break My Heart‘ Nonetheless, she continued releasing back to back hits till 2017 then went off from the scene, the reasons likely linked to health issues.

Cynthia made a statement with her hits, hopeful that she returns to the music conversations.

Can Rap Music still sell in Nigerian Music industry?

The evolution started in the mid-2010s when rappers started migrating from rapping to singing, making rap seems less important, it comes to a point that almost all our rappers were singing verses instead of rapping like they used to, hence this question Can Rap Music still sell in the Nigerian Music industry?

RELATED: Top 10 Best Live Performers In Nigerian Music Industry

What is rap? rap or rapping is talking delicately and rhythmically, often with a very multiplex rhythm even without tonal concerns, which implies that it doesn’t necessarily need a particular kind of voice to blend.

We’ll be highlighting why is possible to revive rap music in the Nigerian music industry, gone are the days that everyone embraces and gives attention to rap music if we’re being honest, the focus now is only for the top rap artistes perhaps, no room for the up and coming ones, unlike when everyone had almost same attention prior to talent and hard work.

M.I released an album titled ‘talk about it‘ in 2008, and a hardcore rap song titled ‘Safe’ featuring Djinee was part of the song that gained massive reception on the album, so basically Nigerian was all about rap music then, it was very appreciated.

Olamide came out with ‘Eni Duro‘ it was a hardcore rap song, with no single singing verse on it, yet it was massively accepted, with due accolades and praises.

Phyno did the same thing with his singles such as ‘Parcel‘, ‘Man of the Year (Obago)‘ and ‘Ghost Mode‘ all were hardcore rap songs yet it was widely accepted and appreciated.

RELATED: Nigerian Artists that started from the Choir

However, it is a different case now, as little or no attention being paid to rap music in the Nigerian music industry, the reason for the total abolishing of rap culture is still a mystery, especially in today’s market.

In my opinion, I still believe rap music can still sell in the Nigerian music industry, it just needs to be well packaged, it is evident Nigerians prefer melody and groovy vibes now, so mixing it with rap will definitely draw attention and gradually rap can be restored, for example, Vector ‘Early Momo’ feat. GoodGirl LA is currently gaining ground day by day because of the melody infused on it, same as Ladipoe Know You feat. Simi.

Cobhams Asuquo has been into music for more than a decade; be it singing, writing songs, or producing, the man didn’t let his defect stop him.

He started as a music producer as far back as the early 2000s also doubling as a background singer for some of the artists he produced for.

It wasn’t until 2007 he became publicly known as a singer and performing artist when he featured on what became the wildly popular Nigerian campus favorite, Mo Like Jesu Gan by Dekunle Fuji.

Later on, he featured in the song’s music video, officially introducing himself to a very adoring Nigerian public and finally gaining some recognition. In 2008 he produced and dropped a verse on Lagimo which became another fan favorite, for the gospel duo Rooftop MCs.

In 2014, he released his debut hit single, Ordinary People which has gone to achieve status as a timeless classic.

The multi-talented singer clocked 39 years old on the 6th of January and to celebrate the music icon, mp3bullet.ng has compiled a list of songs you didn’t know were produced by him.

Rooftop MCs consisting of the duo, Soulsnatcha, and Sokleva came into the spotlight with their hit song, ‘Lagimo’ which ruled in airwaves from radio to television between 2007 and 2009, totally redefining what gospel music has been known to be prior to RoofTop MCs.

When roughly translated as a whole from Yoruba to English the chorus means, “if my head will swell up in pride, beat it back into humility”.

Cobhams apart from producing the song also featured on the song in which he dropped a powerful verse.

The song tells of two tragic stories, one of a new mother who becomes a widow the same day she gives birth and two friends turn archenemies due to being in rival gangs.

Cobhams and Asa both rose to international acclaim as a result of their collaboration on Asa’s platinum-selling debut album, “Asha“.

One notable song off that album is the Socio-political commentary song, “Jailer“. The song is a reflection of the political climate in Nigeria and the rest of the world.

It has also been interpreted to be a metaphorical commentary on how society has become prisons and some selected people have become ‘Jailers’. Cobhams is credited as a co-writer of the song.
