As 2025 winds down, the Starboy camp is closing the year like a team that refuses to take its foot off the accelerator.

Starboy Power: DJ Tunez Tops Spotify Streams in Nigeria

Wizkid has already been sweeping up year-end streaming awards across Spotify, Apple Music, and Turntable’s radio charts. But on Tuesday, his right-hand sound architect delivered one of the label’s biggest wins yet: DJ Tunez has officially been crowned Nigeria’s most-streamed DJ on Spotify in 2025.

The recognition, pulled from newly shared data, is more than a personal triumph. It’s another reminder of the Starboy machine’s grip on the continental music scene, an empire that seems to glide at a height few can match.

The numbers appeared via Africa Facts Zone on X, igniting a mini frenzy on social media. The post highlighted Spotify’s top DJs by monthly listeners, a modern metric that neatly reflects influence, reach, and cultural relevance.

As expected, South Africa’s amapiano giants filled the upper ranks, maintaining their status as Africa’s most exported sonic powerhouses.

Still, Nigeria made its presence felt in the elite tier. Both DJ Tunez and DJ Spinall earned spots on the list, further validating the country’s expanding footprint in the global DJ ecosystem.

Top African DJs on Spotify (Monthly Listeners, as of December 9, 2025)

DJ Maphorisa (South Africa) – 5.3M

Master KG (South Africa) – 3.8M

DJ Tunez (Nigeria) – 3.55M

Kabza De Small (South Africa) – 3.4M

DJ Yo! (Mauritania) – 3.34M

Jazzwrld (South Africa) – 3.29M

Shimza (South Africa) – 2.8M

Black Coffee (South Africa) – 2.75M

Nitefreak (Zimbabwe) – 2.24M

XDuppy (South Africa) – 2.238M

Tyler ICU (South Africa) – 2.18M

Kelvin Momo (South Africa) – 1.93M

DJ Spinall (Nigeria) – 1.89M

Major League DJz (South Africa) – 1.7M

Uncle Waffles (Eswatini) – 1.5M

Despite South Africa’s ironclad hold on the global dance scene, this was undeniably DJ Tunez’s moment. He stands as the only Nigerian DJ in the top ten and Africa’s second most-streamed DJ overall, firmly stamping his status as the country’s undisputed number one.

And Tunez responded in pure Starboy fashion. Without a single word, he quote-tweeted the ranking with the iconic Michael Jordan “I’m Back” GIF—a subtle flex that sparked another wave of memes, shout-outs, and jubilation across the timeline.

For Starboy fans, it was déjà vu: another day, another win.

Wizkid Joins DJ Tunez & Maphorisa for Afro-Amapiano Fusion “SOUTH GIDI”

The title itself tells a story “South Gidi” blends “Gidi,” the affectionate nickname for Lagos (Wizkid’s hometown), with “South,” a nod to Maphorisa’s South African roots.

The result is a three-track EP that captures the essence of unity, rhythm, and shared musical heritage between Nigeria and South Africa.

The project’s tracklist features:

Money Constant (featuring Mavo)

Abangani (featuring Daliwonga and Madumane)

Fiesta Forever (featuring Zaba and Zeh McGeba)

Each song carries its own flavor, and DJ Tunez curates with his trademark soulful precision, ensuring the transitions flow like a late-night Lagos breeze. DJ Maphorisa, on the other hand, infuses the production with his unmistakable deep-house and Amapiano touch, grounding the sound in South Africa’s rhythmic authenticity.

At the heart of it all is Wizkid, whose vocals serve as the EP’s smooth and magnetic center. His calm delivery glides effortlessly across the piano-led beats, adding a touch of stardom and serenity to the collaboration.

The trio reportedly finalised the project during studio sessions in London in September 2025, with snippets of which made waves across social media, sending fans into anticipation.

With SOUTH GIDI, DJ Tunez, Wizkid, and DJ Maphorisa have crafted more than just a project; it’s a celebration of African unity through sound, where the streets of Lagos meet the clubs of Johannesburg, and rhythm becomes the universal language.

New music from Wizkid isn’t slowing down in 2025. The singer is set to feature on a three-track project alongside two of Africa’s biggest disc jockeys and producers, marking another fusion of Nigeria’s Afrobeats sound and South Africa’s Amapiano wave.

Popular Nigerian-born DJ and producer DJ Tunez officially confirmed the news on Thursday, October 23, 2025, when he shared the South Gidi tracklist via X (formerly Twitter). The project includes three songs titled “Money Constant,” “Fiesta Forever,” and “Abangani.”

Accompanied by the Nigerian and South African flags and a heart emoji, the post hinted at a celebration of unity and rhythm between the two powerhouse music cultures.

South Gidi is expected to deliver a perfect blend of Afrobeats and Amapiano, genres that continue to dominate the global music scene while highlighting the growing creative exchange between Nigeria and South Africa.

From the snippets teased so far, South Gidi promises to offer an exhilarating sonic journey, merging infectious drum patterns, soulful melodies, and the electrifying energy that defines both Lagos and Johannesburg’s thriving music scenes.

The countdown to the 2025 edition of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) has officially begun, with this year’s competition tipped to be one of the fiercest in the history of the continental showcase.

On Wednesday, August 27, the International Committee of AFRIMA, in partnership with the African Union Commission, released the nominees’ list, spotlighting African music heavyweights and rising stars across the continent.

Global Afrobeats icons Davido and Burna Boy will face off against Congolese legend Fally Ipupa, Moroccan hitmaker El Grande Toto, South African DJ Maphorisa, and Egyptian superstar Amr Diab. They will also compete with a fresh wave of emerging acts including Shallipopi, Himra, Moliy, Ayra Starr, Tanzanian crooner Juma Jux, and Senegal’s Mia Guissé.

Organizers revealed that AFRIMA 2025 received a record-breaking 10,717 submissions, the highest in its 12-year history. After 10 days of rigorous screening, a 13-member jury trimmed the entries down to 343 nominees spread across 40 categories, representing Africa’s regions and its diaspora.

Speaking on the unveiling, AFRIMA jury member Delani Makhalima hailed the growth of African music: “For years our voices were not heard, but today African music is global. This is AFRIMA, the biggest music entity on the continent.”

The 2025 awards ceremony is scheduled to hold in Lagos from November 25 to 30. The week-long programme will feature signature events such as the AFRIMA Music Village, the Africa Music Business Summit, the Nominees Party, and will climax with the grand finale on November 30.

The prestigious awards night will be broadcast live to audiences in more than 84 countries.

This announcement adds to what has been an extraordinary year for the 22-year-old singer. In 2025 alone, Ayra has delivered powerful sets at major international music festivals, including the St Kitts Music Festival and the Canadian Jazz Festival.

She has also been touring as a supporting act on Coldplay’s globally acclaimed Music of the Spheres World Tour—an achievement that speaks volumes about her rising global influence.

Ayra Starr’s accolades this year speak for themselves. She clinched the Best International Act at the 2025 BET Awards, making her only the second African female artist to win the award, following Tems’ groundbreaking victory in 2022. She also became a double winner at the MOBO Awards, reinforcing her reputation as one of Africa’s most successful global exports.

Back home, she continued her award streak by bagging Best R&B Single at the 17th Headies Awards for her collaboration with American singer Giveon on Last Heartbreak Song, a standout track from her sophomore album The Year I Turned 21.

In another remarkable career milestone, Ayra Starr recently became the first Nigerian female artist to surpass 1 billion views on YouTube—a feat that underscores her immense popularity and digital reach.

With her headline performance at Afro Nation DR on the horizon, Ayra Starr shows no signs of slowing down. As her artistry continues to break barriers, she remains one of the most compelling voices driving Afrobeats onto the global stage.

With the release of his latest single, Tobari, featuring South Africa’s DJ Maphorisa and Nigeria’s DJ Obi, the veteran entertainer reasserts his relevance in the evolving Afrobeats scene, blending signature charm with renewed creative fire.

Tobari delivers the infectious energy fans have come to expect from D’banj, yet with an unmistakably modern sound. The track is rhythmic and vibrant, designed for movement and celebration, evoking memories of earlier hits like Oliver Twist and Fall in Love while speaking to the present with a refined sonic edge.

Coming on the heels of his collaborative album The Entertainer: The Sequel—a project that featured continental powerhouses like Youssou N’Dour and Awilo Longomba Tobari extends the narrative of an artist still pushing boundaries.

With over half a million monthly Spotify listeners, D’banj makes it clear he’s not merely basking in past glory but actively shaping the soundscape of today’s African music.

What makes this new single stand out is how effortlessly it fuses D’banj’s iconic sound with current trends. Rather than chasing fleeting popularity, he taps into his vast experience to craft something timeless yet fresh. The result is a track that speaks to both longtime fans and the newer generation tuning into Afrobeats.

The production on Tobari is polished and assertive, showcasing the combined strength of DJ Maphorisa’s sonic versatility and DJ Obi’s sharp musical instincts.

Layered with D’banj’s unmistakable vocal swag, the track builds on decades of musical mastery while feeling right at home in the current climate of global Afrobeats influence.

More than just a comeback moment, Tobari solidifies D’banj’s status as a mainstay in African pop culture. He doesn’t return as a legend seeking nostalgia but as an active voice in today’s conversation, commanding respect not just for his history but for his continued evolution.

In a time when many legacy acts are fading into the background, D’banj remains a dynamic force proof that longevity in music is as much about adaptability as it is about talent.
South African DJ, producer, and songwriter DJ Maphorisa has credited Nigerian superstar Wizkid for introducing him to Amapiano, the genre that has become a global phenomenon originating from South Africa.

In an interview with the BBC, the award-winning hitmaker recounted how Wizkid played a pivotal role in his transition to becoming one of the key figures in the Amapiano movement.

Maphorisa revealed that his journey began during a night out with Wizkid at a club in Pretoria. When the DJ played an Amapiano track, Wizkid immediately took notice of the unique sound and inquired about it.

“Before that, Amapiano was already bubbling in South Africa’s underground scene, but I never really paid attention to it until Wizkid showed interest,” Maphorisa shared. “I thought if Wizkid really vibes with this sound, then there’s something there. He’s the one who really put me on the sound.”

“Wizkid was the one that put me on Amapiano when it was still an underground sound”

At the time, Maphorisa was focused on creating Afrobeats and Afro-House music. However, Wizkid’s enthusiasm inspired him to dive into Amapiano, which would later define his career. Today, Maphorisa stands as one of the genre’s most influential figures, working alongside stars like Kabza De Small.

Maphorisa also credited Wizkid as the first Nigerian artist to explore Amapiano, referencing the Grammy winner’s collaboration on Sponono with Burna Boy and Cassper Nyovest, a track that helped catapult the genre into the international spotlight.

This revelation underscores Wizkid’s knack for spotting and amplifying new sounds, as well as Maphorisa’s pivotal role in bringing Amapiano to the forefront of global music.

South African music icon DJ Cleo has voiced his support for DJ Maphorisa’s stance on the ownership of music masters. Cleo asserts that Maphorisa’s claim about owning the masters to songs produced in his home is valid.

Recently, Maphorisa has faced criticism from fellow musicians who accuse him of exploitation. In response, Maphorisa emphasized that the songs in question were created in his home, where he provided both the food and equipment.

On the latest episode of Podcast and Chill, while DJ Cleo did not directly name Maphorisa, he highlighted a broader principle: if a song is produced under a parent’s roof, the parent typically holds the masters. Cleo’s comments sparked a wave of reactions, with some supporters agreeing with Maphorisa’s position, while others contested Cleo’s viewpoint.

One Twitter user commented, “It’s time to apologize to Lord Phori. We need to put respect on that man. Hope the haters don’t change him; we still need him for summer.”

Another user added, “There’s a slight misunderstanding about owning a property or the means of production versus owning the masters. It’s more complex and involves who made the recording, financial aspects, and any existing agreements.”
