Just like many others, DJ Exprezioni believes that the Grammys need to come up with a category that would cater to Afrobeat as the genre has become too big to be boxed under another category.

“If you look around, Afrobeat has become a powerful force to reckon with. It’s bigger than what it used to mean years back. It can’t be boxed under another category or share the category with other genres.”

His opinion comes weeks after Nigerian Artist, Wizkid lost his double nominations which attracted a lot of criticism even from celebrities like the International supermodel, Noami Campbell.

Wizkid was nominated in the ‘Best Global Music Performance’ category, recognising new vocal or instrumental Global music recordings.

He also received a second nomination in the ‘Best Global Music Album’ category for albums containing at least 51% playing time of new vocal or instrumental Global Music recordings.

However, the singer lost both nominations as Pakistani Arooj Aftab’s, “Mohabbat” won the ‘Best Global Music Performance’ award while Beninese Angelique Kidjo’s, “Mother Nature”, won the ‘Best Global Music Album’ category.

Speaking on the loss, DJ Exprezioni said;

“The loss wasn’t just Wizkid’s loss, it was everyone’s loss. every Nigerian felt it whether you are a friend or an enemy. I am not saying that others in that category weren’t deserving but you have to admit that he was nominated in the wrong categories. His sound is bigger than where he was nominated.”

Emphasizing why Grammy needs to reconsider how it prioritizes Afrobeat, the DJ said;

“Afrobeat isn’t just a trend that will come and pass away, it’s here to stay. If Reggae can have a category, why not Afrobeat. Afrobeat artists are now competing on Billboard charts with other popular genres like Hip-Hop, Pop and R’n’B. It has proven its longevity and impact, so why should it having a category be too much to ask.”

Attracting and maintaining high-quality artistes, expanding their abilities, and consistently motivating them to enhance their performance are all part of talent management.

The expansion has been characterized as a welcome development by industry professionals throughout the world as the music industry continues to witness the birth of emerging music stars.

The main goal of talent management is to develop a motivated artiste that will stay with your label  for a long time. The specifics of how to accomplish this will vary from label to brand.

“I for one understand all that emcompases talent management and I can catgorically beat my chest to being a part of some of the hottest singers careers in the hood.

“Most times, many record labels do not understand the precepts in engaging a talent, and so, when you see an up-coming coming out from the blues, there is usually an issue with his former label. As a matter of fact, this is a common occurence in the Nigerian music industry. In fact, it is almost an African and global thing!,” Exprezioni admonished.

“Being a talent manager has been a part of me, and just like deejaying, I love to bring out the best in people.

Addressing the issue of talent management in the Nigerian market, Exprezioni said, “The fact that many record labels don’t talk about talent management is a big issue, and it really needs to be addressed.

“Although, the big goons in the industry like Mavins, YBNL, and many more have taken it as part of their core issues when dealing with newbies.”

Concluding his speech, Exprezioni revealed he is looking forward to taking talent management seriously – because according to him, “it is a big business”.

“There is also the place for understanding your audience, their demographics, which gives you an insight into the kind of songs they would like. For example, you go to a 70-year-old man’s birthday party to DJ, and you are playing ‘Ozumba Mbadiwe‘, do you really think you would get the attention of the audience?“, Exprezioni said.

Buttressing his point, Exprezioni also shared a piece of advice for up-and-coming DJs. In their quest for fame, Exprezioni admonished them to take their time and get the best out of their training rather than rushing for fame, which would catch up to them in the long run.

He said, “for the up and coming folks, take your time, it is not an easy job to serve over 10,000 people in a stadium with good music over a period of time and see them vibing to it. There are a lot of emotions and patience to this thing.

“I will advice you to learn, be up to date, stay strategic, keep your confidence at its peak and soar greatly”, he concluded.

Talented DJ, Exprezioni has shared accolades for the globalization of Afrobeat through Nigerian artistes.

“For a fact, the global acceptance of Afrobeat has a lot to do with Nigerian artistes.

Speaking further, he butressed his points by analysing the growing trends of international publishing deals.

“This simply shows our relevance towards the growth of this genre globally. More importantly, it stresses how much influence we have as a nation of musical talents”, he added.

DJ Exprezioni recently expressed interest in working and collaborating with Wizkid and Davido, not just on different songs, but together.

He won’t be the first artist to express interest in bringing one of the biggest fans’ dreams to life but he might be the first to actually make it happen.

For quite a while, there has been a bubbling rivalry between the two superstars which has even seen fans witness the two throw shades at each other on social media.

Davido and Wizkid, probably two of the biggest names in African music, have had some strange run-ins, mostly sparked by fans, ego, competition.

Their fanbases, Wizkid FC and 30BG have one of the biggest rivalries social media has experienced with hardcore members taking shots at each other.

However, beyond all of this, deep down most music fans sitting on the fence wish to see the two put aside their differences for once and collaborate on a song.

Many won’t know this but before all of the major fame, WIzkid and Davido were in a way friends. Big Wiz made a cameo alongside Burna Boy on Davido’s 2011 breakthrough hit, Dami Duro.

Recently, Wiz and Davido were caught on camera hugging themselves intensively and many are hoping that this step in the new direction would produce some magical like a collaboration.

DJ Exprezioni believes that he can make this herculean task happen. Speaking to Mp3bullet.ng, the Atlanta based Disc Jockey states that there is no problem with being fans of the two as the superstars are doing their best to create good music.

He also disclosed that having them on one song has been a lifelong dream of his and he is working o see it happen.

“If you enjoy good music, you’ll be a fan of both artists forever. There are no problems with being a fan of both artists because they are doing their best to create great music for their listeners.

For so long, the industry has wanted Davido and Wizkid to work together, and I aim to make it happen soon,” he declared.

DJ Exprezioni who is currently based in Atlanta was born and raised in Lagos, where he schooled from Kindergarten to University until he moved to the United States in 2016.

His brand name, Exprezioni means Expression in English and is derived from the Italian word “ExpreZIONI”.

The Disc Jockey in an interview revealed that even before he went into music, he has been known by that name and even the company he founded in Lagos, Nigeria went by that name also.

DJs have one goal, to stir up the spirit of people with the music they play and this has always been the goal for DJ Exprezioni who states that ‘Music is a mood, music is love, music is life.’

The DJ whose love for music stemmed from a young age has released two tracks one of which features the Queen of Afro-house, Niniola.

“Keys” is produced by Sarz with additional production from the versatile Disc Jockey and is a smooth blend of Afrohouse and Afrobeat laced with sweet melodies from Niniola.

The collaboration between the two is the tip of the iceberg according to DJ Exprezioni.
