Under the current rule (Laws of the Game, Law 14.1), the VAR had to call the referee signalling that the goal should be disallowed.”

Atletico Madrid and their manager, Diego Simeone, were visibly frustrated with the decision. Speaking in his post-match press conference, the Argentine coach did not hold back, questioning the call and VAR’s intervention:

“The referee said when Julian got to the penalty spot, he touched the ball with his standing foot, but the ball did not move,” Simeone argued.

“I’ve never seen a penalty where they’ve called the VAR, but well, they would have seen that he touched it. I want to believe they saw he touched it. Did you see him touching the ball twice? Please, whoever was present in the stadium and saw him touching the ball twice, the ball moving, please come forward and raise your hand. Antoine Griezmann has acknowledged that the abuse he got from Atletico Madrid fans following his move to Barcelona was something he “deserved.”

The French international famously announced his decision to snub a transfer to Barcelona and stay at Atletico after months of speculation in the summer of 2018, however, a year later, the Blaugrana met his whole €120 million (£107 million/$134 million) release clause to wrest him away from Wanda Metropolitano.

Atletico fans were incensed by the transfer, but Griezmann ultimately returned to the city in 2021 on a two-year loan after underwhelming at Camp Nou. The deal also included a €40 million (£35 million/$40 million) purchase option that would be activated if he played at least 45 minutes in half of Atletico’s games this season.

When he first rejoined Diego Simeone’s squad, the home fans booed and whistled at him. Nevertheless, after his move was declared permanent in October, he begged for forgiveness and now says he “earned” the hostile reaction.

 “It [the Barcelona transfer] did a lot of damage to the fans. They gave me everything and in the end I left because that’s what I wanted, what I needed. I as a fan would also have been very angry. It’s what I deserved,” Griezmann told Movistar.

“I became very humble and I worked to try to change that. Those who know me know that I need this relationship with the fans, I need their love, your support to perform at the highest level.”

Griezmann has been able to win over the Atletico supporters once more and there is no more animosity between them thanks to his solid on-field performances. In 33 games in all competitions this season, he has been one of their top players with eight goals and 10 assists.

The forward will hope to find the net when Atletico host Sevilla on Saturday in their next La Liga encounter.

Atletico Madrid have reportedly made inquiries about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after agreeing to loan Joao Felix to Chelsea until the end of the season.

Portugal forward appears to be on his way to West London for a loan fee of €11m (£9.7m), with Chelsea reportedly set to pay his £270,000-a-week wages in full. While Aubameyang has not yet been put on the market by the Blues, the Evening Standard reports that the club have received an inquiry from Atletico for the 33-year-old, whose name was mentioned in negotiations for Felix.

Signed by Thomas Tuchel having previously worked together at Borussia Dortmund, Aubameyang has fallen out of favour under the German’s successor Graham Potter and has not started for the Blues since November 6.

The addition of Felix might still affect Chelsea’s team once Aubameyang leaves. Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech, who each have 18 months left on their contracts, are reportedly prepared to leave the club, according to The Evening Standard.

In a hectic January transfer season, Chelsea has already signed Benoit Badiashile, David Datro Fofana, and Andrey Santos.

Atletico Madrid chief executive Gil Marin has dropped a huge bombshell over the future of Portuguese superstar Joao Felix.

During Portugal’s 6-1 victory over Switzerland in the World Cup round of 16, the 23-year-old was in electric form, contributing two assists in a display of his brilliant ball skills.

But he has had trouble having the influence at Atletico Madrid that many had hoped he would have. He was bought from Benfica for an astounding €126 million (£113 million) in 2019, but Diego Simeone hasn’t always given him a regular spot in the team.

The relationship between the two has clearly deteriorated as the Argentine’s tactics have appeared to be at odds with Felix’s preferred style of play.

Felix, who is under contract with Atletico Madrid until 2026, is reportedly hoping to leave the club next year. Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, and Chelsea are all reportedly interested in him, but Atletico may not want to face a significant loss on their significant investment.

The player’s desire to leave the Metropolitano Stadium, however, seemed to be confirmed by chief executive Marin, who suggested that Felix’s time at Atleti may be coming to an end.

“[Joao Felix] is the biggest bet this club has taken in its history. I personally think he’s a top talent, a world class player,” Marin told TVE.

“For reasons it isn’t worth getting into – the relationship between him and the boss [Simeone], the minutes played, his motivation right now – it makes you think that the reasonable thing is that if there’s an option that’s good for the player, good for the club, we can look at it. I’d love him to stay personally, but I don’t think that’s the player’s idea.”

In 94 La Liga appearances for Atleti over three and a half seasons, Felix has only scored 24 goals, and this season, across all competitions, he has only netted four goals.

He is, however, appearing to be a crucial component of Fernando Santos’ Portugal team, who will face Morocco in the World Cup quarterfinal on Saturday.

Three days after Diego Simeone’s team was knocked out from the Champions League in the group stage, Atletico Madrid lost a late dramatic 3-2 defeat at relegation-threatened Cadiz in LaLiga on Saturday,

In the first minute, Theo Bongonda gave Cadiz the lead, and Alex Fernandez doubled their advantage in the 81st. Four minutes later, defender Luis Hernandez scored an own goal, and four minutes later, replacement Joao Felix made it 2-2.

Atletico were stunned when Bongonda’s left-footed effort from the area reached the bottom corner in the first minute.

With Felix and Antoine Griezmann on the bench, Atletico’s attack was led by Alvaro Morata and Angel Correa but Morata had to go off with an injury in the 10th minute, dealing a blow to the visitors who brought on Matheus Cunha.
