Nigerian music executive and producer Don Jazzy has reflected on the early days of the legendary Mo’Hits Records era, revealing how living together with artists like D’Banj and D’Prince helped shape some of Afrobeats’ most memorable records.

Don Jazzy reflects on work, living experience with D’Prince, D’Banj

Speaking during a recent appearance on the Crea8torium Podcast, Don Jazzy explained that the close-knit environment within the Mo’Hits camp created a natural creative chemistry that made hit-making feel effortless.

According to him, some of the biggest songs from that era were born of ordinary moments and spontaneous interactions in the studio and in the house they shared.

“I have a theory that says that most of the great music that we made in Afrobeats was when all of us were living together,” he said.

The veteran producer went on to recount the story behind Olorun Maje, revealing that the inspiration for the hit track actually came from a tense exchange involving D’Prince and former manager Sunday Are.

“For instance, D’Banj’s ‘Olorun Maje,’ the idea was from D’Prince and Sunday Are, who was our manager then. Sunday Are was complaining that D’Prince didn’t want to go to radio interviews. He came to report to me but I didn’t even listen because I was working in the studio.”

Don Jazzy explained that he redirected the complaint to D’Banj, whom he described as more strict and disciplined within the group dynamic.

“So, I told him to go and report to D’Banj because he is like a military man. After he reported, D’Banj started shouting at D’Prince. Then D’Prince now came back into the studio where I was with Sunday Are and pretended like he was dusting some equipment and then began to sing, ‘Some people they want make I cry, some people they want make I die, why? Olorun Maje oooo’,” he stated.

The producer said the melody instantly caught his attention and naturally blended with the instrumental he was already working on.

“The lyrics just fell precisely to the beat I was making at that time. I told him to pause that I like it. That was how the song was born,” he added.

Don Jazzy also shared another example of how spontaneous creativity shaped the Mo’Hits sound, revealing that the popular phrase “You bad, you want it” originated from Dr SID casually freestyling over one of his beats in the studio.

Reflecting on today’s music industry, the Mavin boss suggested that modern recording processes have changed significantly, but noted that he still tries to remain intentional and emotionally connected when creating music.

The gift comes as part of Slimcase’s appointment as the first brand ambassador for D’banj’s CREAM platform, a talent discovery initiative he launched on August 1, 2016.

The platform, created in partnership with Sterling Bank, aims to promote indigenous creative talents monthly. CREAM stands for Creative, Reality, Entertainment, Art, and Music, and has been instrumental in giving life to emerging artists’ dreams.

In a video shared on his Instagram page on January 30, 2026, Slimcase was visibly overwhelmed. Shocked by the generous gesture, he went shirtless, checked out the car’s luxurious interior, carried D’banj briefly, and even prostrated in gratitude.

Accompanying the clip, Slimcase wrote:

“A Very Big Congratulations 🎊 on your innovation @iambangalee on your new Car production and A Big Congratulations 🎊 to @thecreamplatform and @sterlingbank for collaborating in the production of ‘Li’ and also A Big Congratulations 🎊 to @iam_slimcase for being the First Brand Ambassador for the company 🎊🎉🥳.”

The apology comes after a petition filed by D’banj’s legal counsel, Pelumi Olajengbesi, who accused the rapper of criminal defamation over comments implying that the CREAM platform could not afford to offer him a ₦20 million ambassadorial deal.

Mr Real’s remarks sparked widespread reactions on social media and eventually led to legal action.

A magistrate court subsequently ordered the rapper to appear in court and restrained him from making further statements about D’banj pending the determination of the case.

In an emotional video shared on his Instagram page, Mr Real expressed deep remorse, describing D’banj as a father figure and mentor who has played a major role in his personal life and music career.

“This video is an apology to my boss, D’banj. I want to use this opportunity to apologise to the Koko Master,” he said. “I misunderstood and misinterpreted some things concerning the CREAM platform, and I want to sincerely say I am very sorry.”

The rapper acknowledged D’banj’s influence on his journey in the music industry and reaffirmed his respect for the veteran artiste.

“D’banj, you have played a big role in my life and career, and I would never deny that. You are like a father and mentor to me. I am truly sorry, and I ask for your forgiveness,” he added.

In the wake of Afreximbank’s recent equity stake in his C.R.E.A.M Platform, global entertainer and tech innovator D’banj has unveiled a powerful new national movement aimed at spotlighting positivity across Nigeria.

The initiative, Nigerian Youth Positively Driven (NYPD), was officially launched at the UN@80 celebration in Abuja, where the Creative Alliance for Peace was also introduced.

D’banj Unveils New NYPD Initiative After Afreximbank Deal

NYPD is designed as a nationwide call to action, encouraging Nigerians to document uplifting stories, acts of kindness, innovation, and community impact happening around them. The goal is simple: amplify the good, reward impact, and inspire a culture of positivity.

Through the NYPD portal, both contributors and featured change-makers stand a chance to be rewarded. Individuals whose stories are spotlighted earn a ₦1,000,000 grant, while uploaders receive a ₦250,000 grant, with winners announced every week.

It is already being regarded as one of the most active and rewarding positive-impact platforms in the country.

Once winners emerge from the C.R.E.A.M Platform’s NYPD selection, their entries are sent to the Creative Alliance for Peace, where they receive further development, amplification, and long-term support.

A major focus of the alliance is championing renewable energy solutions and sustainability-driven projects that can transform communities nationwide.

D’banj says the initiative is a deliberate effort to shift national attention towards stories that reflect Nigeria’s true spirit and the potential of its people.

Speaking on the inspiration behind the movement, he shared:

“When you talk about the creative industry, we all know that today, content is the biggest export that we have as a nation. Unfortunately, we don’t have enough strong alliances or platforms where the youth can effectively access support.

“Africa is the biggest when it comes to creativity, and we have not even scratched 20%. I think it is so important to come together to have that voice. We’re moving, and the movement is called Nigerian Youths Positively Driven (NYPD). With it, we have created the alliance, and we now need the youths who are positively driven to jump on it.”

With NYPD now live and nationwide participation growing by the day, D’banj’s call is clear: Nigeria’s next big movement is rooted in positivity, collaboration, and the power of young people to shape the future.

Veteran Nigerian entertainer and music executive Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo, famously known as D’banj, has revealed that his talent discovery and content distribution platform, C.R.E.A.M. (Creative, Reality, Entertainment, Arts, Music), has grown to an estimated valuation of $3 billion.

The Kokomaster made the revelation during an appearance on The Micon Podcast with journalist Seun Okinbaloye, where he opened up about the mindset that has shaped his two-decade-long career and his transition from artiste to full-fledged business figure.

D’banj explained that from his earliest days in the industry, he never saw himself as just a musician. Instead, he intentionally embraced a broader identity a move he believes shielded him from the pressure of fitting into a narrow creative box.

“I discovered early that I didn’t have to box myself in. I never called myself a singer or rapper. I saw myself as an entertainer — I don’t need to always sing to entertain,” he said.

According to him, the global success of Oliver Twist validated this approach, pushing him toward a more expansive understanding of what it meant to be an entertainer.

He said the song’s international explosion convinced him that performance, presence, and creativity carried just as much weight as vocals.

D’banj also highlighted that many of the world’s biggest stars achieve long-term wealth not by relying solely on music, but by building strong businesses, diversifying income streams, and leveraging their influence into other sectors.

He pointed to his own entrepreneurial path as proof, noting the rise of the C.R.E.A.M platform — a venture he now values at $3 billion.

“That’s the real game,” he said, underscoring the importance of vision and business strategy for entertainers hoping to compete globally.

D’banj’s remarks reinforce his consistent call for African artists to embrace innovation, technology, and long-term business thinking instead of depending solely on streaming numbers or performance bookings.

During a recent appearance on the Mic On podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, the singer revisited the 2012 split that shook the Nigerian music scene.

While fans had long speculated about what led to the end of one of the industry’s strongest partnerships, D’Banj insisted that the decision wasn’t his to make.

According to him, the push for separation was entirely from his former partner.

He said, “If I were to go back in time, I wouldn’t have done anything differently regarding my relationship with Don Jazzy, especially when the idea to go our separate ways didn’t come from me. It came from Don Jazzy 100 per cent. And that’s why we have no issue.”

D’Banj further revealed that Don Jazzy had been generous during the transition phase. “Jazzy gave me 100 per cent of my catalogue and maybe 10 other songs I have not released… If was a journey for me, even though he had his opinion, I knew that we needed to cement that global movement and I’m glad that even after, God still did it for us with ‘Oliver Twist’, which was the last record we released together,” he said.

The Mo’Hits breakup was officially announced by Don Jazzy in 2012, with the producer hinting at creative disagreements at the time. Yet today, D’Banj maintains that everything happened the way it was meant to.

Though he expressed no regrets about the split, describing it as something that was destined to occur, the singer admitted that he still misses the musical chemistry he once shared with Don Jazzy.

Speaking in a recent interview, the Legbegbe crooner didn’t mince words as he opened up about what he described as exploitation during the two years he spent under D’banj’s wing.

According to Mr Real, the entire experience left him with nothing but disappointment—and a meagre $500 to show for it.

He explained that he served as an ambassador for D’banj’s CREAM brand, expecting opportunities and rewards that never came. To make matters worse, he alleged that D’banj was handed a car to give him, but instead kept it despite knowing that Mr Real didn’t own one at the time.

“D’banj ripped me. No be say allegedly, he did. You can’t be with a man for two years and all you gain is $500. What kind of wickedness and selfishness is that?” Mr Real said, clearly frustrated by the ordeal.

This isn’t the first time he has publicly called out the Koko Master. Back in 2023, Mr Real accused D’banj of reneging on financial promises and of holding back his share of earnings from their 2018 collaboration, Issa Banger.

With this latest revelation, the rift between the two artists seems far from settled, and fans are once again debating where the truth really lies.

The viral moment began when D’banj, popularly known as the Koko Master, reposted a clip of Arinzezim and her friend vibing energetically to his 2016 hit track Emergency.

Despite their simple outfits, wrappers, blouses, and sneakers—their electrifying dance steps caught the singer’s eye. In his post, he urged fans to help him track down the ladies, promising them what he described as an “emergency alert.”

Not long after, the promise became reality. D’banj reportedly gifted the duo some money, a gesture that left them overjoyed. Confirming the news, Arinzezim took to social media, announcing that the “emergency alert” had indeed landed, sparking even more excitement.

In her appreciation video, the content creator showered D’banj with gratitude and prayers, hailing him for his kindness.

She also cheered him on to keep making timeless hits, vowing to always dance to his songs.

With this gesture, D’banj—who recently featured in Funke Akindele’s new project and thrilled audiences at the Nottingham Music Carnival—once again proved why he remains a beloved figure in Nigerian entertainment, not only for his music but also for his generosity.

The ambitious body of work is divided into three sections, each representing a different voice and stage of life. The Men pays homage to industry legends with heavyweight appearances from MI, Faze, D’banj, Sound Sultan, 2Baba, Styl Plus, and Phyno.

The Boys celebrates the new generation of stars, featuring Oxlade, Shoday, Jeriq, Bayanni, Suave, Soundz, and Ceeboi. The final disc, Your Guy, presents Spyro in his purest form—raw, reflective, and unfiltered.

With this structure, the project blends eras, bridging Afrobeats’ past, present, and future. It combines soulful storytelling with infectious beats while exploring themes of growth, responsibility, and love.

By weaving Afropop, dancehall rhythms, and introspective ballads, Spyro underscores his versatility and long-term vision as more than just a hitmaker.

Spyro’s journey to this milestone has been remarkable. He first broke into the mainstream in 2022 with Billing, but it was his smash hit Who Is Your Guy? that cemented his status as one of Afrobeats’ breakout stars.

The remix with Tiwa Savage earned him the Headies award for Best Collaboration and helped push him into international recognition.

Since then, Spyro has maintained steady momentum, racking up more than 240 million YouTube views and attracting over one million monthly listeners on Spotify.

From his beginnings as a Lagos choir singer influenced by R&B icons like Usher and Joe, to becoming a chart-topping sensation, his rise has been nothing short of meteoric.

For Spyro, The Men, The Boys & Your Guy is more than just a debut—it is a personal statement. The title itself reflects the stages of life: the innocence of youth, the weight of manhood, and the essence of being “your guy,” someone relatable and authentic.

With this project, Spyro makes a powerful declaration of his artistry, paying respect to those before him, spotlighting the new wave, and boldly carving out his own space in the global Afrobeats movement.

In the official visuals, monochrome figures depict “The Men” and “The Boys,” while Spyro himself, shown in color stands as “Your Guy,” symbolizing his unique identity in the Afrobeats movement.

The album, consisting of 19 tracks, will be released on Friday, September 26, 2025. Spyro announced on Instagram on Wednesday, September 24, sharing the album artwork and tracklist. His post quickly ignited excitement online, with fans eager to hear what he has described as a “three-course meal” of music.

The project is divided into three themed sections:

The Men: A salute to Nigerian music veterans, featuring heavyweight collaborations with M.I Abaga, 2Baba, D’Banj, Faze, Styl Plus, Sound Sultan, Phyno.

The Boys: A showcase of new-generation talent, with guest appearances from Bayanni, Shoday, Oxlade, Suave, Soundz, Jeriq, and Ceeboi.

Your Guy: Spyro’s personal statement, blending solo performances with just one feature Pitch6lack on the track Away.

The album boasts a strong production team. Kunle Adesuyi serves as executive producer, with Bobberry and Synx handling mixing and mastering. Production credits include Dawie, Colonel Tyemmy, Bash Anything, and Mr. Soul.

Spyro, in unveiling the project, wrote on Instagram:
“THE TRACK LIST, THE MEN, THE BOYS AND YOUR GUY. ONE MORE DAY TO THE FEAST … 26/09/05 Which of the tracks do you think will be your fav. Could you kindly help share this on all platforms occupied. Thank you.”

The Men, The Boys & Your Guy comes on the back of Spyro’s breakout singles Who Is Your Guy? and Stand By You, both of which solidified his reputation as one of Afrobeats’ brightest new voices.

With a blend of legendary icons, emerging stars, and his own artistry, the album is already being positioned as one of the most significant Afrobeats releases of 2025.
