Olamide is one of the greatest music brands in the industry, having catapulted a slew of artists to prominence through his record label, YBNL.

Over the years, the YBNL chairman has signed various young artists to his record label. While some of them went on to achieve even greater success after leaving his record label, others are still having difficulty breaking into Nigeria’s fiercely competitive music scene.

However, several of the former YBNL artists have occasionally criticised their former record label head on social media, accusing him of lacking the managerial abilities to support their musical success (or “blow,” in Nigerian terms).

Xino is unquestionably the most disappointing YBNL signing. The Plateau State-born musician, who was signed virtually at the same time as Chinko Ekun, recorded two singles on the label, “TTYL” and “Nakam,” before departing under contentious circumstances in 2016.

Upon his exit from the label, the singer gave an exclusive interview to Showtime where he took swipes at Olamide, “YBNL management and other labels in Nigeria need to adopt an entrepreneurial system that focuses on artiste development because there is zero fan base in Nigeria.

“Beyonce’s husband, Jayz, is an undisputed boss because he understands this concept and creates acts that last to create others too.

I’m engaging in other money-making options, music is just an option and one that I love very much; I never asked to be signed on to YBNL, so I’m not bothered as much. But for the sake of those who dig my songs I’m coming with something soon, something cooking with Kiddominant is dropping soon.”

Nonetheless, he attempted some conciliation in 2017 by attempting to mend fences with the label and Olamide.

He wrote on his Instagram page that, “Mood, feeling like Baddo right now, I want to take this time out to apologize, first to @baddosneh for the rash things I said last year.

I love @baddosneh as a big bro and how creative he has inspired me to want to be better.
Davolee was signed by Olamide in November 2016. This occurred following the exodus of Chinko Ekun, Lil Kesh, Viktoh, and Adekunle Gold. The label required some new blood, which it gladly received.

During the time he was assumed to be on the label, he released two truly impressive songs, 2017’s B-Banks-produced ‘Festival Bar‘ and 2018’s ‘Cirocing.’ His talent was always obvious, but it was never really supported by any hits.

Following the label’s signing of Picazo Rhap, Fireboy DML, and Yomi Blaize, signs of a split became clear.

He claimed he never had a contract with YBNL in a November 2018 interview with Naijaloaded TV.

However, Davolee let loose in February 2021 after writing on his Twitter page that “Olamide is mad.”

This occurred as a result of a tweet from MTV Base West about a programme called #YBNLRaised songs to recognise Olamide’s contribution to the music industry. The addition of “Festival Bar,” a song by Davolee, to the playlist, upset the singer.

Later, he tweeted MTV Base to express his displeasure with having his name appear beside anything relating to Olamide. An Olamide fan tried to interfere and got dragged by Davolee, alongside the YBNL boss as he said they are both mad.

Olamide discovered Lyta while he was out on the streets. During his time with the label, he dropped the hit singles “Self Made” and “Time,” both of which featured Olamide, on September 19, 2018. He arrived at YBNL a little before Picazo, Yomi Blaize, and Fireboy DML.

However, following rumours that he was leaving YBNL earlier in the year, he finally appeared on Naijaloaded TV to announce the end of his mixed association with YBNL. He stated during the interview that despite receiving between 50,000 and 80,000 Nairas for performances, the label never provided him with a written contract.

He said, “I don’t have any deal with YBNL or Olamide. Olamide saw me on the street and helped me, I don’t have any written contract with him… YBNL and Olamide with always be part of my story. God bless Olamide, thank you for everything. No love lost.

“Yes, I was getting benefits. The used to pay me for shows. Sometimes 80k, 60k to 50k. But when I dropped my songs, ‘Temi’ and ‘Selfmade,’ I didn’t get anything.”

Olamide also responded and claimed that YBNL has a promotion calendar that Lyta was unwilling to follow. When other artists started getting their shine, the rapper claimed Lyta became unhappy. So, to avoid “bad energy” Olamide claims he unfollowed Lyta on Instagram.

Temmie recently accused Olamide of placing her in a box while she was still signed to YBNL on social media. Temmie claims that Olamide transported her from Ilorin to Lagos at the age of 18, gave her a platform, and then rejected every event and offer she received.

While some music fans and industry insiders say that the genre has succumbed to the upbeat tempo of Afrobeats and Afropop and has died out in Nigeria, others remain firm believers in Nigerian rappers’ ability to weave words together to form bars.

In Nigerian music, especially the hip-hop scene, a co-sign from a bigger artiste could literally be the answer to an up-and-coming artiste’s prayers, serving to open doors they were miles away from and place them in conversations that would greatly benefit their career.

This co-sign effect has proved especially instrumental in the street-hop scene, gifting music lovers with prolific street-hop rapper and singer, Davolee.

If the ratio of singers to rappers in the country is slim, the female representation for the ratio of rappers is even slimmer but this hasn’t stopped SGaWD from making a name for herself as one of the hardest female rappers out of Africa in recent times.

Making an unmissable entry in 2020 first with ‘Like Me’ that saw her flex her vocals, SGaWD soon flipped the coin to reveal her rapper side first on Feel Right with Mafeni and Doz, then on Resistance with Jess Eta, while still fluidly expertly switching roles between singing and rapping.

In North America, trap music has been able to revolutionize the movement of hip-hop not only in America but globally, producing the next generation of global rap stars and making a case for the continued viability of Hip-hop.

Back home, while Nigerian trap music may not be as popular, with American trap constantly making the rotation of Nigerians from different walks of life, there are two genres that seem to be swaying the crowd; +234drill and street hop.

With the emergence of an equally talented but younger generation eager to stake their claim in the industry and take theirs, comes the feeling of old pillars and the dismantling of the gatekeeper’s post.

As the face and pulse of hip-hop continue to change, fewer rappers stick to the traditional cadence and techniques, but not Phlow, who has been able to breathe new life into these templates.

Full name Stephanie Asuai Eyime, Phlow’s flow re-establishes her professional moniker in titanium and has quite literally inserted her in typically male-dominated conversations.

But this is not a first for the talented femcee who started rapping as a teenager to outdo her brother’s verses.

A full-fledged rapper’s rapper, Payper Corleone is proof that Hip-hop lives on in the ears and hearts of young Nigerians.

Rapping since his secondary school days, Tombra Asikpi or Payper rose to fame in 2015 with the release of two mixtapes; Love & HipHop and Friday Flight Freestyles.

Then he’d cemented his hold on the scene with his commercially and critically successful album, BARS 2.

Mp3bullet.ng shares reasons why Olamide, one of the Nigeria’s leading musicians has blown different artistes and songs.

Olamide’s passion towards the expansion of the music industry can be attested in the lives of many artistes he has impacted.

Olamide has a tradition of becoming the stepping stone for many upcoming artistes, and he has successfully become the abode for any street sensation.

His vocal chords has become an engineered street sound, clearly accepted like an anthem – ready to serve as a banger when delivered.

This great acceptance is irrespective of who he features or who features him, but because of his decade and more relevance into the expansion of Afro-sound/ indigenous hip-hop.

Taking a look at his impact in the lives and careers of some of the raving sensations –Lil Kesh, Adekunle Gold, Phyno, Naira Marley, Fireboy, Portable.

Phyno‘s rise to stardom was as a result of their 2012 collaboration, “Ghost Mode“! The song was an instant hit – creating one of Nigeria’s evergreen collaboration.

For Naira Marley – Everyone will attest to the 2018 mega classic, “Issagoal” which had Lil Kesh in it.

Lil Kesh on the other hand was signed into YBNL alongside Adekunle Gold, Lyta, Davolee and Fireboy DML. All blew under Olamide’s umbrella!

Taking a case study into the latest rave, “Portable“, Olamide’s induction provided the world the legal ground to shout the word “Zeh“!!!

Truthfully, he is the major reason Portable has become the talk of the town and an artiste to watch out for this year.

There is so much originality with Olamide’s presence and the music industry is blessed to have the Badoo in this generation.

Olamide’s legacy in the music world is clearly the benchmark for a successful music godfather, whose impact can be seen and felt both in the careers and songs of many.

These are the obvious reasons why Olamide deserves more respect

Olamide is a pioneer of Yoruba dialect rap singers and pidgin English singers in Nigeria, and he is credited with resurrecting the ‘Street hop’ sub-genre, therefore we’d highlight some reasons why he deserves more respect.

Olamide a Nigerian rapper who literally merged English with his native accent, a Nigerian hip-hop sub-genre known as street hop, revolutionized the Nigerian rap business.

Olamide

Obviously, the impact and influence of Indigenous rappers like Da Grin, Lord of Ajasa, and I.D Cabasa cannot be overlooked or ignored when discussing the sub-genre, as those were truly inspiring good times for the street, providing us with a plethora of gems that helped popularize it in other parts of the country and laid the groundwork for what the culture is today.

Da grin, Lord of Ajasa & ID Cabasa

However, Olamide broke into the industry in 2010 with his viral hit ‘Eni Duro,’ and then took off in 2011 with the release of his debut album ‘Rapsodi,’ followed by the release of the video for Omo to Shan with Wizkid.

Olamide is, in fact, one of the most versatile performers in the Nigerian music industry, having evolved to maintain durability over the past decade while hip-hop in Nigeria has gone through many phases.

Olamide

Importantly, in addition to his undeniable talent, Olamide founded the YBNL record label in 2012, seeking a new platform to realign and capitalize on his highlighted practicality and potentials.

Olamide

It was a rare feat in the Nigerian music industry, as Olamide became the youngest to ever own a label after parting ways with ID Cabasa’s Coded Tunes record label.

Olamide annually releases one or more projects, and to date has more projects than any artistes in the last decade, totalling eight (8) studio solid albums and about three (3) collaborative albums and EPs.

Olamide discovered Lil Kesh and signed him to the YBNL record company in 2014. The label has also signed Adekunle Gold, Chinko Ekun, Viktoh, Davolee, and Fireboy DML.

Olamide was untouchable in 2015, releasing street anthems like ‘Melo Melo,’ ‘Lagos Boys,’ ‘ladi,’ and ‘Eyan Mayweather,’ as well as a sold-out Eko Hotel at Olamide live in concert (OLIC), making him the first Nigerian artiste to have a sold-out concert in Eko Hotel and the first to introduce the annual concert culture.

Olamide

From Zlatan Ibile to Naira Marley, Bella Smurda, Small Doctor, Lil Kesh, Davolee, Lyta and others, Olamide has clearly influenced every street rapper of this decade.

Let’s move on. Olamide is still a chart-topper in 2020, a decade later, and has one of the best albums of the next decade, Carpe Diem, a hit-filled studio album.

These are the top 10 Nigerian musicians who look up to Olamide

Popular Nigerian music star, Olamide, is one artiste who undeniably has great talent, and here are the top 10 Nigerian musicians who look up to Olamide.

Looking up in this context is simply means respect for an OG status, in other words, these are artists that respect him heavily in the Nigeria Music Industry

The young man himself started as a struggling artist but was able to rise through the ranks and become one of the top stars in the country.

The music industry is also a very competitive one in addition to it being hard to break into.

Many times, celebrities only remain famous for a short time before they are kicked off the pedestal by a young and fresher artist.

The Nigerian music industry is no doubt a thriving one and it appears to be quite lucrative too considering the lavish lifestyles some celebrities can afford to live.

However, one possessing music talent is not enough to break into the Nigerian music industry as people have been known to struggle to have their music reach a large audience who love it.

The industry knew Fireboy through Olamide and of course, the young champ is on his way to going international as a result of Olamide‘s influence and YBNL’s movement.

Olamide is no doubt a living legend for nurturing this kind of talent.

Bella Shmurda

Olamide showed interest in Bella Shmurda‘s music when his “Vision 2020 freestyle video” went viral last year.

The YBNL boss went ahead to give the young chap a rare privilege of collaboration on the remix of the song.

We also heard that Olamide paid for the music video shoot as a way of encouraging the LASU rising act.

Lyta

He was signed to YBNL the way and time when Limerick was signed too.

Unlike Limerick, Lyta had a rather successful career run with YBNL.

After the release of his song “Time” featuring Olamide, and “Selfmade” Lyta appeared to be the most valuable artiste under YBNL at that time.

This is why Olamide would undoubtedly reign forever as the king of street music in the Nigerian music industry.

Olamide has created a blueprint for street music by producing superstars from his space and that’s one great reason he would reign forever as the king of the street.

King Olamide is one of the pioneers of dialect rap singers of Yoruba language and pidgin English in Nigeria, arguably resurrected a sub-genre called ‘Street hop’.

Olamide

Olamide was a rapper who revolutionized the Nigerian rap industry, practically infused English with his native dialect, a Nigerian hip-hop sub-genre known as the king of the street.

Obviously, the impact and influence of Indigenous rappers like Da Grin, Lord of Ajasa, and I.D Cabasa cannot be underestimated or left out when talking about the sub-genre, as those were really inspiring good times for the street, serving us a lot of gems that help popularise it to other parts of the country and laid the foundation for what the culture is today.

Olamide

Factually, Olamide is one of the most versatile artists in the Nigerian music industry, evolving to maintain longevity since hip-hop in Nigeria has passed through several phases over a decade now.

Olamide

Crucially, added to his mastery and unarguable aptitude, Olamide formed the YBNL record label as early as 2012, seeking a new platform to realign and leverage his highlighted practicality and potentials.

Olamide

However, it was rare exploits in the Nigerian music industry, becoming the youngest to ever own a label, after parting with Coded Tunes record label owned by ID Cabasa.

Olamide annually releases one or more projects, and to date has more projects than any artistes in the last decade, totaling eight (8) studio solid albums and about three (3) collaborative albums and EPs.

In 2015, Olamide was untouchable and the blueprint to Nigeria street hop, releasing street anthems like ‘Melo Melo’, ‘Lagos Boys’, ‘ladi’ and ‘Eyan Mayweather’, and Sold-out Eko Hotel at Olamide live in concert (OLIC), becoming the first Nigerian artiste to have a sold-out concert in Eko Hotel and also the first to introduce the annual concert culture.

Olamide obviously influences every street hop artist of this decade, from Zlatan Ibile to Naira Marley, Bella Smurda, Small Doctor, Lil Kesh, Davolee, and others.

Fast forward to 2021, a decade and more, Olamide is still a chart-topper and has one of the best albums of the new decade, Uy Scuti, a hit-studded studio album.
