Nigerian artist Seun Kuti is set to release a new song with Damian Marley, Bob Marley’s son, sparking excitement across the internet. The upcoming single, titled “Dey,” will be released on June 26, 2024.

Angélique Kpasseloko Hinto Hounsinou Kandjo Manta Zogbin Kidjo, better known by her stage name Angelique Kidjo, is set to release one of her most awaited works in 2022 with Nigerian singer and songwriter Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, better known by his stage name Burna Boy.

Angelique Kidjo and Burna Boy, both African Grammy award winners, are about to make one of the most anticipated comebacks in the music industry.

This is not the first time both acts are working together on a project as Angelique had featured on Burna’s Grammy award-nominated album ‘African Giant‘ on the song “Different” alongside Damian Marley.

After this collaboration, both acts met again to work on the project “Do Yourself” which is off Angelique’s ‘Mother Nature’ album.

Also, many people associate Afrobeat with the audacious, flaming, talented multi-instrumentalist and founder of the genre, Fela Kuti.

The Grammy Award is a household name in the United States, It was made to honour American music, not to please the entire globe.

While the category of ‘Best World Music Album’ may be exclusive and make the Grammys appear snobbish, it has also served a purpose that centres on the global music community.

African performers are dissatisfied with the elitism of the Grammy Awards.

The argument for altering the name of the award to “Best World Music Album” is that the word “world” implies that America is not only apart from the rest of the world, but also superior to it.

Nigerian record producer and musician Osabuohien Osaretin better known by his stage name Sarz revealed to Native Mag in this interview that he did not want to work on the song since he was quite fatigued on that particular day.

Recall, Wizkid released his Made in Lagos album last year with features from the likes of Tems, Burna Boy, Tay Iwar, Damian Marley, and Skepta who feature on Longtime.

I remember making the song in LA, and I was so tired that day. Wiz and Skep, I feel like they’d been trying to work for a while, but they hadn’t hit the right vibe or something. I’ve experienced them in sessions before and I know, ok maybe nothing’s going to come out of it. So, on this day that they came into the studio, I had already blocked my mind from trying to do anything, but something kept telling me, “no just try, just try, see what happens.” So, I made the beat, I remember Skepta just kept listening to it for hours until he was ready to record. Once he recorded, we all knew it was banger, it’s just such a sick tune. So, I’m really glad that I psyched myself into making it because I was really tired, and I didn’t even want to do it.

From the beginning of 2021, Tems has been on the rise in the Global music scene since the release of Wizkid’s ‘Essence‘ which she lent her rare vocal range to in the summer of 2020.

In 2021 she has become one of Nigeria’s biggest Global stars, earning herself millions of streams, a feature on Drake’s “Certified Lover Boy” and fan love from International celebrities.

Just like most Nigerian artists, her career didn’t always start big. Other than some early fan affection from those who were drawn to her catchy tune, she remained virtually unknown for a long time.

Tems’ Journey into Music

Prior to becoming Tems was one of global R&B’s fastest-rising stars, she was Temilade Openiyi, an introverted child of a single mother in Lagos who enjoyed Destiny’s Child, Lil Wayne, Alicia Keys, and Aaliyah’s music.

A music teacher in secondary school guided her in discovering her voice. She’d sing and write songs at home with her brother on the guitar.

She’d always known she wanted to spend her life making music, and at the age of 15, she decided to quit listening to other people’s songs in order to develop her own style free of influences.

She became a hesitant college student in South Africa, studying economics at her mother’s insistence. Music took a backseat for the majority of her school years, and she only performed once in South Africa.

She got to open for Cassper Nyovest with a song called Highlights.

She also learned how to produce by watching YouTube videos. During one of her school vacations, she realized that producers would not help her unless she was willing to pay in cash or kind. So she gathered her wits and taught herself how to make her own music.

She went on to work as a digital marketer in Lagos before deciding to focus on music three years ago.

In 2018, she released “Mr Rebel,” a stripped-down sleeper hit that earned her a community of supporters known as the Rebel Gang.

However, Try Me which was released in August 2019, catapulted her into the spotlight and generated a buzz around her.

The Rise of Tems

Even in 2020, “Try Me” was still buzzing and in the first half of the year, it looked like she wasn’t going to drop anything again.

She however dropped “These Days” in May 2020 after a couple of collaborations with Show Dem Camp, Odunsi, Khalid and Blackmagic.

Then came her debut EP, For Broken Ears which received praises from the listening public and praises from critics. The EP was preceded by its lead single, ‘Damages.”

Essence and its many triumphs

For every Artists there is that one song that not just reintroduces to your audience but takes your name to corners of the earth you never expected.

For Tems it was “Essence“, one of the songs from Wizkid’s 2020 “Made In Lagos” album.

When it was released alongside the project’s other songs in 2020, not many people actually vibed with the song. In fact, the trending songs from Wizkid’s MIL were “Ginger” which features Burna Boy, “Blessed” which features Damian Marley, ‘Smile” which features H.E.R.

In the first half of 2021, when it felt like the buzz around the album was dying down, “Essence” came to the rescue. US Celebrities were among the first set of people to start using the song on their short videos.

Then came in Tik-Tok where most songs have found popularity and it was no different for “Essence“, shooting it to a wider audience.

The part of the song mostly used on Tik-Tok was Tems‘ hook and this translated to not only fame for Wizkid but also for Tems.

The Nigerian singer and songwriter John Ighodaro, professionally known as Johnny Drille, posted a video in which he plays his keyboard while performing a country music rendition of Wizkid’s song Blessed.

He shared the video via his Instagram page on Saturday, the 4th of December 2021.

Mavin Records star has had a busy year, unveiling his debut album titled Before We Fall Asleep.

He is also billed to stage a Johnny’s Room show in Abuja next weekend just two weeks after the Lagos edition.

Despite his hectic schedule, the singer finds time to post freestyle versions of some of his fans’ favourite songs on Instagram.

The latest cover video by Johnny Drille is a country refix of Big Wiz Blessed off the Made in Lagos album which features Damian Marley.

It could be recalled that in 2011, Wizkid became a father when he welcomed his first child, Boluwatife, with his first baby mama, Shola Ogudu.

The Grammy Award-winner stated he wasn’t sure he was ready to be a father in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, where he discussed his successful music career and collaboration with Jamaican musician Damian Marley on the smash single ‘Blessed.’

In his words,

“Yeah. Fatherhood changed me, man. When I had my first child, I was 21. I’ll never forget. I felt so lost, ’cause I wasn’t sure I was ready to be a father at that point. I was scared I wasn’t going to be a good father to my kids ’cause I [was] still a baby. I was so confused.

I remember after I had my child, it just changed everything, man. I started seeing my life different. I literally started putting my business together after I had my kid. It just made me [think], “Oh, wow. Another life is here that I have to care for. That’s my responsibility.” So he really changed my life, man, and I called him Boluwatife: “As God wishes.” That was a big blessing to my life. Fatherhood changed me forever.”
