Nigerian artist Daddy Showkey has shared a harrowing tale from his past involvement with a gang, highlighting a near-death encounter that profoundly shaped his outlook on life. Reflecting on his journey from those tumultuous days to his present state, he asserts that transformation is possible for anyone.

In a candid discussion featured on The Honest Bunch Podcast, Daddy Showkey disclosed a previously undisclosed episode from his tumultuous past. He recounted a chilling incident where he narrowly escaped being burned alive.

Admitting to his involvement with a gang in his youth, he confessed, “I was in a gang back in the day. I won’t lie.”

Recalling their reckless activities, including the use of firearms to terrorize locals, Daddy Showkey recounted a pivotal moment when their illicit actions caught up with them, leading to a perilous confrontation.

“Some of us found guns where we used to pick valuables from in a refuse dump somewhere in Ikorodu. We started using the 9mm guns to terrorise the area. One day, when we were out in our usual style, someone saw us and started screaming, ‘Thieves, thieves, thieves,’” he said.

Fortunately for him, he narrowly escaped the clutches of death, but one of his gang members was not so lucky.

“They caught me and my friend and they tied us up and they were going to burn us. We were saved miraculously but unfortunately, they caught 91A and burnt him alive on the new road,” he said.

“I am a living testimony for every young man because If I John can be alive today to become Daddy Showkey, there is nobody who can’t become someone. People are usually ashamed to talk about their past but I’m not. I don’t care,” he added.

Veteran Nigerian singer Daddy Showkey revealed that his colleague Eedris Abdulkareem had an altercation with more than just 50 Cent, a worldwide artist.

He said that during the 2003 All-African Games, Abdulkareem and the late American rapper DMX got into a fight.

In addition, he denied Abdulkareem’s accusations that Charly Boy had deserted him during the event involving 50 Cent, claiming that Charly Boy has a track record of feuding with famous people.

In a recent interview, media personality Daddy Freeze interviewed Daddy Showkey.

“The same thing Eedris did with 50 Cent is what he did with DMX at Transcorp. DMX was ready to confront him. I was among the people that pleaded with him,” Showkey said.

Don Jazzy claimed that he began his musical career as an instrumentalist in the church because he couldn’t afford studio sessions at the time.

The music executive revealed this while featuring as a guest on the latest episode of the Leaderboard podcast hosted by Fisayo Fosudo.

He said, “My music inspiration started from Ajegunle because dem Daddy Showkey, dem Baba Fryo, a lot of all these Ajegunle musicians that we looked up to.

“I used to tell my guys that when I started making music, I pretty much just wanted to blow and be Daddy Showkey because anywhere you went to in the country, you will hear, ‘If you see my mama, hosanna’ or ‘Somebody call my name, Showkey.’

“Trust me, the lyrics are national anthems. I pretty much wanted to do that. So, I used to go to church and play instruments. It was the only place that you can…Unless you want to go to studios which would cost money. At that time, we couldn’t afford to have sessions. So, the best place that you can get free equipment is the church. Instead of doing the ragga, the reggae, you go and do gospel first.”

The veteran Nigerian Galala singer, Daddy Showkey, has revealed how he has rejected an offer of millions of naira to cut his dreadlocks.

Showkey spoke as a guest during the ‘Sempe’ Sunday service recently held at the God Bless Nigeria Church led by Pastor Tony Rapu.

Sharing his life story during the service, Showkey said, “Today, people call me ‘Daddy Showkey’, but they don’t know my story. If I can be an example to others, there is no one here that cannot be used as an example.

I used to be called ‘John Pako’. I cannot believe that people would want to relate with me now. I promised God that if he moved me from ghetto to grace, I would never cut my hair. I challenged God that if he could make me successful, I would keep my hair as a covenant with him. Truly, God has overdone it over and again.

I did not keep the dreadlocks to be a ‘rasta-man’. It is because of the covenant I have with God. I have been offered millions of naira to cut my hair but I refused because I had made a covenant with God.”

The Ajegunle-born artiste also stated that he attended the service in order to use his story to encourage others.

He added, “I am here because I know the only way one can change another life is by sharing one’s story with that person. Someone asked me when I had an encounter with God. I had an encounter with God a long time ago.

I told the person they don’t listen to my music because all my songs are testimonies. I have never smoked Indian hemp since I was born. God has a reason for choosing me to be a testimony.”

Veteran Nigerian Galala musician Daddy Showkey has taken his fans on a trip down memory lane when he visited the house where he was born in Ajegunle.

The “Galala” singer chose to take his fans and followers on a tour of his childhood home (a single room) where he was born and raised with his brothers.

During the visit, Showkey disclosed that the video for his big project, ‘Diana,’ which was released in 1999 and is regarded as one of his most successful songs, was shot in the same compound where he was born and raised.

Mp3bullet.ng highlights Collaborations that prove Bella Shmurda is a proper hitmaker

When Wizkid said that Bella Shmurda’s voice is important to the African Music scene, he wasn’t lying. The 25-Year Old artist went from making fame with his viral hit, “Vision 2020″ to being one of the most sought-after artists for features.

Just like many of his fellow colleagues in the Industry, Bella is not just talented but consistent going by the quality partnership that he gets involved with.

To celebrate the young dynamite who have redefined the boundaries of Street Hop as we know it in Nigeria, here are some Collaborations that demonstrate Bella Shmurda’s ability as a proper hitmaker.

If there is anything Bella Shmurda has shown when it comes to collaborations, is that he is the best man to handle the hook of any song.

It’s not surprising that Masterkraft decided to feature him on “Hallelu” alongside Zlatan. The way Bella goes hard on the beat is nothing short of magical to listen to.

Olamide is one of the persons credited for Bella Shmurda’s success in the Industry and it was only fair the young singer repaid that debt with a feature on Baddo’s song.

“Triumphant” is inspirational not just because of the melody and its Beat but because of how Bella Shmurda manages to get a listener sober with his lyrical delivery.

While Bella’s verse on the song was albeit short, it’s unforgettable.

The Nigerian Industry is blessed and continues to be so. Once upon a time before the rise of Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, Olamide and the likes, there were Nigerian artists who had control of the music industry.

Their songs were either an evolution of the other genres or a creation of their own genres. They might not be Fela with the International appeal but they were certainly Kings in the Industry at some point.

While they no longer rule the Industry, their impact and influence on the development of the Industry cannot be underrated.

Here are the Nigerian artists who once dominated the Music Industry

Daddy Showkey

Words are not enough to explain the importance of this man, his music, or the impact he had on the late-90s entertainment scene.

Daddy Showkey was one of the leading frontline acts for street music. His Ajegunle bred nature fused with his Galala dance was a huge deal in the slums those days. With hits such as Diana, Fire, and others, one can safely state that Daddy Showkey is a living legend.

Mr Maintain does not require an introduction; after all, who hasn’t danced to this song? With both hands forming the peace sign and rolling beside your head, Yahooze was a mad jam that year.

Olu Maintain started his music career as one half of the Maintain group with his cousin, Tolu Ogunniyi as the second half.

The two had a successful music run, releasing six albums between 1998 and 2004 with the hit songs “I Catch Cold”, “Domitila” and “Alo” before they separated in 2004.

Olu’s solo career rose to prominence in May 2007 with the release of the hit song “Yahooze” which literarily hail internet fraud and lavish spending from his debut studio album, Yahooze (2007), and a second album, Maintain Reloaded (2008).

Who could forget his legendary performance at the Royal Albert Hall, London where brought Colin Powell, who was the then United States Secretary of State on stage to dance to the song.

Mr Nawti returned in 2012 with another huge single, Nawti, although none of his songs can equal his 2008 breakthrough. None.

Nigerians love to dance and it’s in our DNA, so many Nigerian artists are aware.

Therefore they’re constantly writing songs for the latest dance moves or for the more creative ones, artists inventing new dance moves for Nigerians to rock to and extend the life of their songs.

Various artists have introduced several dance techniques over the years, but only a few have gone viral and shook the dance floors.

Top 10 Nigerian dances of all time and the artists that created them

Some of these dance moves were not originated by Nigerian artists, but as soon as they hit our radios, we adopted them and made mad jamz out of them.

Mp3bullet has checked, and these are the top 10 Nigerian dances of all time.

Enjoy, share, and do not forget to dance.

Galala – Daddy Showkey

This dance step is associated with “the ghetto” or Ajegunle, Lagos, it originated from the pseudo-reggae sound made popular by artists like Ras Kimono, Blacky, Fada U-Turn, etc.

Daddy Showkey

However, Daddy Showkey will be most remembered as the instigator of the dance; it is as much a part of his identity as his long dreadlocks.

Alanta – Artquake

This was a very unique but crazy dance movement originated by a group called “Artquake“.

Artquake

It involved a crazy movement of the arms and legs in an alternate manner and crazy facial expressions that were slightly debasing, beating an imaginary drum on the stomach.

Alanta could genuinely put you in a state of shock and dismay, Terry G also promoted this dance movement with his free madness series.

Yahooze – Olu Maintain

Olu Maintain is to be thanked for this. The Kennis Music star released “Yahooze” in 2008 and created madness across the country.

Olu Maintain

It involved popping two figures in the air in the like manner of spraying imaginary money.

As usual, it started all simple, until Nigerians got crazier with it and developed its steps to various styles.

Non-hardcore fans would remember Oritse Femi from the days of his hit Music, “Double Wahala” which shot him to the limelight.

Born Oritsefemi Majemite Ekele, the singer hails from Itsekiri in Warri North L.G.A of Delta State.

His music career started off professionally as the lead vocalist of a Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Ajegunle, Lagos where he also played the bass guitar.

His greatest artistic opportunity occurred when Jamaican dancehall singers Shaba Ranks, Keppy Ton, and others arrived to Ajegunle to create a Ragga Dub School. They were brought there by the late Johnny Nap.

The music school also boast of breeding future reggae sensations of the 90s like Daddy Showkey, Daddy Fresh, Father U-turn, Baba Fryo and a lot of other stars.

He started out with a duo group called Junglist which included his friend Chibudo with two albums “BOYS DEY BINU and MONEY NA TIME’.

However, after an undisclosed conflict with his partner in 2006, he went solo.

While both artists attempted to launch solo careers, only Oritse Femi was able to get off to a flying start after the release of “Elewon” and “Flog Politician,” which quickly won him over the hearts of Ajegunle youths and music fans, as well as the later release of the classic “Flog Politician” album.

In 2014, Oritse Femi stormed the industry with “Double Wahala” which blew his career to the mainstream audiences and earned him massive airplays.

The song is a remake of Fela’s iconic 1990 song “Confusion Break Bone.”

While Fela’s version is the usual long music housing the fusion of instruments like drums and saxophone to create his special blend of Afrobeat, Oritse Femi’s version was more of pop sound but with elements of Afrobeat.

The song was the rocket that launched him to a wider audience and was one of 2014’s biggest songs. In that same year, he dropped a remix featuring D’banj on it.

The remix however wasn’t as popular as its original.

While Oritse Femi has been a rep on the street thanks to his earlier songs, he was however a favourite in the Music industry thanks to this song.

To this date, “Double Wahala” is Oritse Femi’s biggest and best work. The song was inspired by his experience in the slums while growing up.

His Sound and street appeal

The streets of Lagos has been a foundation for many of Nigerian greatest stars to date. No matter the style or genre of music an artist does, if it is accepted on the streets, the artist is sure to reach mainstream success in no time.

Oritse Femi grew up in Ajegunle, a locality that has been home to many of Nigeria’s biggest stars at some point.

After his separation from his music partner, Chibudo later known as Chi-Junglist, Oritse Femi found fame with the release of songs like “Elewon” a socially conscious song about the oil pollution affecting Nigeria.

“Elewon” had that distinct fused vibe of Daddy Showkey and African China, two music stars who were also socially conscious singers.

Another of his song that was a favourite on the streets was his brazen “Flog Politician.” On this song, Oritse Femi is bold about his opinions on how corrupt politicians should be treated.

Advising listeners to flog politicians with Koboko-a popular instrument used to discipline errant people- the singer doesn’t hold back in calling out the leadership of the country for their corrupt ways.

Prior to his song, ‘Double Wahala” becoming popular, Oritse Femi had also dominated streets with the inspiring “Mercies of the Lord”

The song was a hit that he had to feature the late Dagrin and Rhymzo on the remix but it became popular in 2014 when he released it as part of a project.

In 2014, he featured rapper, Vector on the remix of the prayerful and inspiring song, “Better” which was also a hit alongside “Double Wahala”

That same year, he released the Afropop “Sexy ladies” which featured Davido. Unlike his earlier songs, this song was more love-themed proving that Oritse Femi could also be a loverboy when he wants to be.

Another love-themed song that ruled the airwaves was “Igbeyawo” which was popular in wedding events at the time of its release.

That same 2016 was when fans also got to listen to his street anthem, “Awooo Ewaa.”

Conclusion

Oritse Femi might not have any trending hits as of the moment but he is still a respected figure on the streets. The singer found and carved a niche for him, growing even despite the scandals that have plagued him in recent years.

Daddy Showkey used Obama’s death as an opportunity to remind his followers about the significance of working out and taking care of their bodies on his verified Instagram page.

Further, the musician stated that some people enjoy smoking and drinking different things every day, despite the fact that it would eventually take its toll on their health.

Showkey bemoaned the high rate of death among young people in recent years and chastised individuals who made a public display of smoking and drinking. They were, he claimed, urging others to do the same.

In his words:

“You see why we are shouting about you people taking care of your health. Know the situation of your body. Go to the hospital, do medical check-up just to know the situation of your body. All these people every day you smoke this, smoke that, you drink anyhow.
