Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag claims his team has a strategy to stop Harry Kane in Thursday’s Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Red Devils enter the game hot off a penalty shootout triumph over Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup semi-finals, which secured a trip to Wembley in June to play neighbourhood rivals City in the final.

Victory would give Ten Hag’s United a domestic cup double in his first season at Old Trafford, as well as help to erase the terrible memories of the recent mauling by Sevilla in the Europa League quarter-finals.

“It’s quite clear, his impact on the game from Spurs,” Ten Hag said of the 29-year-old ahead of United’s trip to N17. “We have a plan for that and in the home game we did very well, so for tomorrow we need a very good plan as well.

“You have to defend as a team, he’s a clever player, don’t allow him to come into the situations, he can have a big impact on the game.”

Spurs’ recent downturn, and the subsequent dismissal of interim boss Cristian Stellini, has dominated headlines in recent days, but the Dutchman went on to stress that the game still holds significant importance for United and the race for a top-four finish.

“Very. You see the table. It’s quite clear but the approach, our approach will not change,” he added. “Our approach is we want to win every game, it doesn’t matter who the opponent is.”

Tottenham Hotspur have revealed that fans who travelled to Newcastle for Sunday’s 6-1 hammering will be reimbursed by the club’s first-team squad.

At St James’ Park, Spurs gave by far their worst performance of the year (which is saying a lot), and after just 21 minutes, they were already 5-0 down.

Cristian Stellini, the interim manager, first chose to use a back four formation but immediately realized his mistake and switched back to a back five when the damage had already been done.

Despite remaining fifth in the Premier League standings, Tottenham managed to score a second-half consolation goal through Harry Kane.

In a statement on Monday, Daniel Levy accepted responsibility for the team’s recent results and announced that Ryan Mason would take Stellini’s place in the dugout through the rest of the season.

The Tottenham team also issued a joint statement on Tuesday in which they expressed their regret and pledged to compensate the St James’ Park spectators.

“As a squad, we understand your frustration, your anger. Sunday wasn’t good enough. We know words aren’t enough in situations like this but believe us, a defeat like this hurts,” the squad said.

“We appreciate your support, home and away, and with this in mind we would like to reimburse fans with the cost of their match tickets from St James’ Park. We know this does not change what happened on Sunday and we will give everything to put things right, starting against Manchester United on Thursday evening when, again, your support will mean everything to us. Following Sunday’s 6-1 loss to Newcastle, Tottenham confirmed that interim manager Cristian Stellini has resigned from his position.

Spurs were 5-0 down after 21 minutes of the clash at St James’ Park, firmly ending any hopes of Champions League qualification as they fell six points behind the Magpies having played a game more.

Chairman Daniel Levy has revealed Ryan Mason will step into the caretaker role, having previously done so in 2021 when Jose Mourinho was given the boot.

A statement from Levy reads: “Sunday’s performance against Newcastle was wholly unacceptable. It was devastating to see. We can look at many reasons why it happened and whilst myself, the Board, the coaches and players must all take collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility is mine.

“Cristian will leave his current role along with his coaching staff. Cristian stepped in at a difficult point in our season and I want to thank him for the professional manner in which he and his coaching staff have conducted themselves during such a challenging time. We wish him and his staff well.

“Ryan Mason will take over Head Coach duties with immediate effect. Ryan knows the Club and the players well. We shall update further on his coaching staff in due course.

“I met with the Player Committee today – the squad is determined to pull together to ensure the strongest possible finish to the season. We are all clear we need to deliver performances which earn your amazing support.”

Tottenham Hotspur captain and troubled goalkeeper Hugo Lloris provided a scathing assessment of his team’s 6-1 thrashing of Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.

In a dreadful opening 21 minutes, Lloris only managed one save for Tottenham as they quickly slid to a 5-0 deficit at St James’ Park. Joelinton’s attempt from the top of the box may have been blocked by Lloris’ lone save, but Jacob Murphy cheerfully knocked in the rebound to let the floodgates open.

Joelinton scored first, beating Lloris, and Murphy added a third goal from distance as the clock approached the ninth minute.

Lloris failed to stop Alexander Isak twice in quick succession as Cristian Stellini rearranged back four haemorrhaged opportunities.

The fourth goal for Newcastle was scored by the Sweden international, who weaved between the gaping holes in Tottenham’s defence. Isak easily got past Tottenham’s helpless goalkeeper moments later from a tight angle without seeing much resistance.

Lloris replaced Fraser Forster at halftime, leaving the field after Newcastle scored their sixth goal.

“It’s very embarrassing,” Lloris sheepishly admitted when speaking to Sky Sports after the match. “We should apologise to the fans. We didn’t show a good face and we could not match the performance of the Newcastle players. We were late in all aspects of the game and we completely missed the first part of the game. The second half is a different story but it’s really painful.”

When the result was framed as a consequence of Stellini’s switch from a back three to a back four, Lloris was not impressed with that explanation. “It is not even about tactics, we just could not fight and we were late,” he stressed. “I think Newcastle just had a great performance, they were very aggressive and offensive everywhere they had the ball.

“It is difficult right now to assess the performances but there was a lack of pride,” Lloris continued. “You can get punched once or twice, but it was like we could not even react or bounce back. Newcastle deserve a lot of credit for starting the game at 100 miles per hour. They knew exactly what to do.”

Tottenham trail third-placed Newcastle by six points with just six games of the season to play. Fourth-placed Manchester United were not involved in league action this weekend while contesting the FA Cup semi-finals but enjoy the same cushion above Spurs despite boasting two games in hand on the north Londoners.

After a late meltdown against relegation-threatened Everton on Monday, Tottenham interim manager Cristian Stellini sent a message to his team, telling them they must develop their “personality.”

Harry Kane’s penalty had given Spurs a 1-0 lead, but Lucas Moura’s harsh foul on Michael Keane resulted in him receiving a straight red card. Keane got up and produced a beautiful long-range goal in stoppage time to save a draw for his team.

Antonio Conte eventually left the club after Spurs’ last failure against Southampton, as the Italian coach frequently questioned the group’s attitude and capacity to handle pressure.

Conte may be gone, but the message from Stellini remains the same.

“[Personality] is something we have to improve,” he told the BBC Sport : It’s something we have to work on. It’s not an easy thing to do because obviously you need time to do it. It’s a long process but we have to continue the process we had before.

“We have to respect the plan. The game is tough because the opponent has energy.”

Stellini continued: “I enjoyed the moment we started the game. We played a good game because we challenged them at the same level of strength. We play a good game, we were compact, we know it is not easy to come here.

“We have to respect them because they are strong in some aspects like set pieces and long balls. We did a good job, and we had some chances to score. We were unlucky not to do it. The only problem was when we play 11 vs 10. In that moment, we go 1-0 and we have to control the game much better with the ball.

“That was the expectation and the plan. But after the second red card, the game changed, and they found an amazing goal.

“It was important because with 11 men probably the game finishes differently.

“The boost changed completely. After the goal, the crowd went crazy. You need personality to play in this type of stadium, in this type of moment. We have to improve in the way we respect the opponent and when the game changes, we have to fight.”

After his mutually agreed-upon departure from Tottenham, Antonio Conte posted a farewell message to the club’s supporters.

The Italian’s departure was confirmed late on Sunday night, following an explosive press conference at Southampton in which he targeted his players and those in boardroom roles following a 3-3 draw.

Spurs have confirmed that Cristian Stellini will serve as acting head coach until the end of the season, alongside assistant Ryan Mason.

Tottenham Hotspur have announced that they have reached a mutual decision to part company with head coach Antonio Conte.

After an emotional news conference following their 3-3 draw with Southampton, in which he lashed out at his players and said ownership of the club’s trophy record might be questioned, the Italian was expected to depart his role in the first week of the international break.

Tottenham waited until late on Sunday night to announce his departure, revealing in a statement: “We can announce that Head Coach Antonio Conte has left the Club by mutual agreement. We achieved Champions League qualification in Antonio’s first season at the Club. We thank Antonio for his contribution and wish him well for the future.

“Cristian Stellini will take the team as Acting Head Coach for the remainder of the season, along with Ryan Mason as Assistant Head Coach.”

Club chairman Daniel Levy added: “We have 10 Premier League games remaining and we have a fight on our hands for a Champions League place. We all need to pull together. Everyone has to step up to ensure the highest possible finish for our Club and amazing, loyal supporters.”

Conte joined Tottenham in November 2021 as a successor to Nuno Espirito Santo, five months after spurning Spurs’ initial advances following his sudden departure from Inter.

Contrary to all expectations, Conte led Tottenham to a fourth-place finish in his debut season, passing rivals Arsenal in the memorable and dramatic last two weeks of the 2021–2022 season.

But Spurs have failed to kick on this season and ironically find themselves in a similar position to this time last year. They were knocked out of the FA Cup embarrassingly by lower league opposition while they put up little fight against AC Milan on their way out of the UEFA Champions League at the last 16 stage.

Conte’s annoyances bubbled to the surface during last week’s defeat at Premier League bottom club Southampton – a game that proved to be his final at Tottenham.

Tottenham assistant coach Cristian Stellini has disclosed that manager Antonio Conte is unlikely to return to the sidelines for the weekend Premier League match against Chelsea.

Conte underwent surgery earlier this month to have his gallbladder removed after developing cholecystitis at the end of January. After promptly returning to England to continue his job, he took over as manager of Spurs when they played both Leicester and AC Milan.

But, the Italian found it to be too much for him to handle, and he subsequently acknowledged he had overestimated his recovery and tried to do too much too fast.

“For Milan or Wolverhampton,” he added, seemingly also ruling Conte out of taking charge of the FA Cup tie against Sheffield United between the Chelsea and Wolves games.

“If Antonio feels well without some pain or feel something strange, Antonio will be back.”

Tottenham Hotspur will be without Antonio Conte for another Premier League match this weekend, as the manager returns to Italy to recover from gallbladder surgery.

Conte missed the 1-0 win over Manchester City but returned for the losses at Leicester City and Serie A champions AC Milan on Tuesday.

Before the Champions League match, the Spurs manager said that he had disregarded doctors’ orders to return to work at Tottenham, but has now decided to complete his rehabilitation in his own country.

On Sunday, when Spurs host rival West Ham in north London, Conte’s deputy Cristian Stellini will once more assume leadership.
