Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of England midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid, edging out Aston Villa in a late transfer twist that brings the former Chelsea man back to the Premier League after 18 months in Spain.

Spurs are understood to be paying in excess of £34 million for Gallagher, a player they have tracked closely across multiple transfer windows. The 24-year-old has penned a long-term deal and will wear the number 22 shirt in north London.

For much of the window, Gallagher appeared destined for Villa Park, with Unai Emery’s side advancing talks over a loan move that included an obligation to buy. However, Tottenham moved swiftly and decisively, hijacking the deal at the final stages to secure their man.

Speaking after sealing the switch, Gallagher could not hide his excitement about the move.

“I’m so happy and excited to be here, taking the next step in my career at an amazing club,” he said.

“I wanted to be a Spurs player, and thankfully, the Club felt the same. It was very easy, it happened very quickly and I’m ready to get on the pitch.

“I know how great the fans are, I’m really happy to be a part of it here and want to create special moments and memories together.”

Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank also welcomed the midfielder, highlighting both his experience and untapped potential.

“Conor is a top midfielder, who we have worked tirelessly to add to our squad,” Frank said.

“He is still young, so has plenty of room for improvement, but also has huge experience across the Premier League, LaLiga and with the England national team.

“I’m excited about working with him every day, and I know the fans will love what he will bring to the team.”

Gallagher’s arrival comes at a crucial time for Spurs, who were pushed into the market following confirmation that Rodrigo Bentancur will be sidelined for up to three months with a hamstring injury.

The energetic midfielder joined Atletico Madrid in August 2024, going on to make 77 appearances and score seven goals.

However, despite his overall involvement, he managed just four LaLiga starts this season, prompting speculation about his long-term future in Spain.

Beyond club ambitions, the move is also seen as a strategic step for Gallagher as he eyes a return to the England national team, having been left out of Thomas Tuchel’s recent squad. The midfielder has earned 22 caps, with his most recent appearance coming in a 3–1 defeat to Senegal last summer.

Now back on familiar Premier League turf, Gallagher will be hoping his Tottenham chapter reignites both his club form and international prospects.

Atletico Madrid have officially signed England midfielder Conor Gallagher from Chelsea on a five-year contract for a reported fee of £34 million. This transfer, which had faced delays due to complications related to an adjacent deal for Samu Omorodion, has now been finalized, marking a significant addition to Atlético’s squad.

Gallagher, 24, had been training separately from Chelsea’s first-team squad at Cobham as the move neared completion, under the guidance of Blues head coach Enzo Maresca.

His transfer to Atlético comes after making 95 appearances for Chelsea, where he scored ten goals and frequently captained the team in Reece James‘ absence last season under former manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Thank you, and good luck, Conor. 🤝 pic.twitter.com/LZundZneOl

Atlético Madrid’s acquisition of Gallagher adds to their busy summer transfer activity, with the club also bringing in players like Robin Le Normand, Alexander Sorloth, and Julián Álvarez as they aim to compete for domestic and Champions League honors.

Gallagher’s departure also aids Chelsea in streamlining their squad, which has expanded significantly due to BlueCo’s strategy of signing young players on long-term contracts.

Chelsea’s midfield in their Premier League opener against Manchester City featured new signings Moisés Caicedo, Roméo Lavia, and Enzo Fernández, but they were overshadowed by former Chelsea player Mateo Kovačić, who scored in City’s 2-0 victory.

Chelsea’s summer signings include Omari Kellyman, Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Renato Viega, and Caleb Wiley.

Meanwhile, former loanee João Félix is close to securing a permanent move back to the club. The futures of Raheem Sterling and Armando Broja remain uncertain, with Sterling left out of the squad against City and Broja expected to join Ipswich Town on loan.

Chelsea will sign Atletico Madrid striker Samu Omorodion for £35 million ($44 million), with Conor Gallagher going the opposite way.

It was reported earlier this week that the Blues had renewed their interest in 20-year-old Omorodion, and they have now reached an agreement with Atletico, with midfielder Gallagher heading in the opposite direction in a separate transaction.

According to various sources, Chelsea will spend £35 million plus add-ons to get the Spain Under-21 international, who will sign a seven-year deal after excelling on loan at Alaves last season.

Gallagher is due to go to Madrid to finalize his £34 million ($43.4 million) transfer to Atletico Madrid, while Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez is expected to come with him to the Wanda Metropolitano in a move for up to £82 million ($104 million), a club record for the Premier League winners.

It had been claimed that Atleti would not approve Omorodion’s sale until a successor was found, but after a brief delay, the move for Alvarez is anticipated to proceed.

He scored eight goals in 35 appearances for the other La Liga club but has yet to debut for Diego Simeone’s side.

When Omorodion will reunite with his new teammates is yet unknown since he is presently overseas, representing Spain at the Olympics in Paris. Following a disastrous preseason tour of the United States, Chelsea has returned to the United Kingdom. On Sunday, they play their final friendly at Stamford Bridge against Inter.

According to reports, Conor Gallagher has agreed to terms with Atlético Madrid and is set to fly to Spain on Monday to finalize the deal and complete all formalities.

Atlético Madrid had set a deadline for this weekend to resolve the situation. Chelsea had accepted their €40m (£33m) offer a while ago, but Gallagher needed some convincing to relocate to Madrid. A five-year deal awaits him in the Spanish capital.

This approach did not create a favorable situation for Gallagher.

Meanwhile, Atlético Madrid have also reportedly agreed to a deal for Valencia midfielder Javi Guerra, which initially cast doubt on the Gallagher deal. It remains unclear if Atlético will still proceed with Guerra’s signing if they complete Gallagher’s transfer.

Conor Gallagher gave Mauricio Pochettino credit for the tactical adjustment that enabled Chelsea to overcome Crystal Palace on Monday, coming back from behind.

At Selhurst Park, a Jefferson Lerma screamer initially put Chelsea behind. However, Gallagher immediately tied the score after the break before giving the Blues a crucial second goal in stoppage time. Even later, Enzo Fernandez made it 3-1, and Sky Sports then interviewed Gallagher.

Gallagher heaped praise on his manager, stating: “In the second half the gaffer gave us more structure in their half of the pitch to try and create more chances. Having the two strikers to make more runs in behind to create more space which I think it did. It was really good from the manager and definitely helped us to play better.”

Gallagher is making his mark on Chelsea this season in a way that he couldn’t in 2022/23 when he he started fewer than half the team’s games. So far in 2023/24, the 24-year-old has started all but one of Chelsea’s Premier League fixtures, even captaining the side before Ben Chilwell returned from injury. More recently, Pochettino has deployed Gallagher as a ‘number 10’, despite fans more used to seeing him a bit deeper.

On his positional preference, he added: “I’ve played in a number of positions this season, more so holding midfield. I’m happy to play anywhere for the manager. I’m happy wherever I play. No problem.”

Chelsea must build on their recent winning streak of two games—the FA Cup replay success over Aston Villa midweek and the victory over Palace—because an ugly home loss to Wolves still stings. This is especially significant since, the following weekend, following the Premier League matchup with Manchester City, Liverpool will play in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley, providing Pochettino with his first major trophy win as manager.

Noni Madueke has provided insight into his conversation with Conor Gallagher before stepping up to take the crucial penalty that secured Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace.

Despite initially taking the lead with Mykhailo Mudryk’s early goal, Chelsea found themselves level at halftime following Michael Olise’s equalizer in first-half stoppage time. In the second half, Chelsea’s persistence paid off, and in the final minutes, Madueke won a decisive penalty after drawing a foul from Olise following a corner.

After VAR confirmed the infringement inside the box, Madueke took charge of the ball and reassured Gallagher that he would convert the penalty. This conversation between Madueke and Gallagher played a role in the decisive blow that secured Chelsea’s victory over Crystal Palace.

Speaking to Chelsea’s official channels after the match, Madueke said: “It was always gonna be mine, I’m confident, confident from the spot so yeah. I just told him [Gallagher] don’t worry I’ll score. I scored one earlier this season [against AFC Wimbledon]. So when I saw the VAR give the penalty, there was no doubt in my mind that I would take it.”

Madueke has found it difficult to nail down a starting berth under Mauricio Pochettino, as he has struggled with a couple of muscle injuries since the start of the campaign. He admitted that it has been a rough start to his journey in west London but vowed to make an “impact” whenever he is handed the opportunity by the manager.

“It’s been a stop-start campaign for me,” he said. “I’ve had little niggles, little injuries, things that haven’t quite gone my way. I’m happy to have an impact off the bench today and whether I start the next game – or have the same impact off the bench – is up to the manager.”

Madueke is already looking ahead and emphasizing the importance of consistency for Chelsea, as the Blues will be eager to close down the gap with the top four sides by building on the momentum after this victory.

“It’s about consistency for us at the moment, that is the big thing,” he said.

“We play good football and are scoring goals now – I remember last season we weren’t scoring those goals. We’re probably conceding a few too many but I just feel it’s that consistency we need to get down. Once we do, we’ll be a really good team. We’ve had some very good performances this season where we haven’t got the rub of the green. It’s a process and where we are now will not define us come the end of the season.”

The final game of 2023 for Chelsea is scheduled for Saturday afternoon, when they will travel to Luton Town.

Young talent Romeo Lavia is on track to undergo a medical evaluation at Chelsea on Wednesday after turning down Liverpool’s offer in favor of a £58 million transfer to Stamford Bridge.

Southampton accepted Chelsea’s proposal of £53 million plus £5 million in add-ons for the Belgian midfielder on Tuesday. As reported by the Daily Mail, the 19-year-old is scheduled for his medical assessment on Wednesday.

Previously, Southampton had approved a £60 million offer from Liverpool, but Lavia opted to join Chelsea instead. This decision follows shortly after Moises Caicedo also chose to reject Liverpool, opting to join Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

With the signing of Lavia, Chelsea’s spending under owner Todd Boehly, who completed his takeover of the club in May 2022, will reach nearly £1 billion. This summer, Chelsea has already invested almost £300 million in acquisitions, including Caicedo, who set a British record transfer fee at £115 million, as well as Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson.

Former Manchester City academy prospect Lavia will be competing against strong contenders like Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Conor Gallagher, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Lesley Ugochukwu for a starting position in Pochettino’s lineup. This influx of talent further solidifies Chelsea’s commitment to building a formidable team under new ownership.

Concerned about the “too many players” in Chelsea’s squad, Mauricio Pochettino emphasized the importance of resolving their futures this summer.

The Blues defeated Wrexham in their opening encounter of the USA trip to win the preseason game. Conor Gallagher, Christopher Nkunku, and Ben Chillwell also scored goals for the Blues after the half. Young full-back Ian Maatsen scored twice in the first half.

The manager agreed that there is a “need to assess and analyse” the team and take practical actions to lighten the overloaded roster while being pleased to begin his Chelsea tenure with a victory.

“There are too many players. We need to assess and analyse and see what happens with them in the season. Many decisions that we need to take. But it is good to have the opportunity to see all these young guys who can show their quality,” he told reporters. “It is important for them and for us to have a real assessment. For sure all have quality, they need time and space to show they can compete for a place in the squad.”

Chelsea has been actively selling players this summer, both to lower the size of their squad and to balance their books after spending almost £600 million ($775 million) during the previous two transfer windows.

They have already let go of 12 players, including stars like Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, and Mateo Kovacic. A number of other players, including Romelu Lukaku, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, appear to be leaving Stamford Bridge as well.

According to reports, Chelsea is already planning to sell more than £200 million ($253 million) in order to pay for new signings like Moises Caicedo, Rayan Cherki, Paulo Dyabala, and Elye Wahi.

On Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field in the Premier League Summer Series, Chelsea will play again versus Brighton.

Despite the Blues losing 2-0 to Real Madrid on Tuesday to send them packing from the Champions League, Frank Lampard claimed that Chelsea was the better team that night.

Compared to recent weeks, Chelsea played much better. They had early opportunities to tie the game, but N’Golo Kante and Marc Cucurella both missed their chances. In the end, Rodrygo’s two second-half goals proved to be the difference, sending the Blues on their longest winless streak since February 1995.

Despite the outcome, Lampard was eager to point out the advantages and claimed that Chelsea had made genuine progress.

Chelsea, who are on their longest winless streak since February 1995, will attempt to reverse their frightening slide when Brentford visit on April 26, with the emphasis now on ensuring jokes about a relegation struggle do not become a reality as the season comes to a close.

According to reports, Chelsea have agreed a British record deal worth £115m with Benfica for Enzo Fernandez.

This January, Fernandez was one of Chelsea’s top transfer priorities, but up until now, their attempts to recruit the World Cup champion have been unsuccessful.

After negotiations stopped earlier in the window, as reported last week that Benfica was expecting Chelsea to make a fresh offer. The Blues did indeed return to the bargaining table over the weekend.

Early on Monday, there was optimism that a deal was close to being finalized, with co-owner Behdad Eghbali and transfer director Paul Winstanley leading the effort. Both men were instrumental in luring Mykhailo Mudryk away from Shakhtar Donetsk.

And according to reports, an arrangement was reached after those discussions, with Chelsea promising to pay more than Fernandez’s £105 million release clause so that Benfica would take payment in instalments.

Rui Costa merely needs to give his approval to the transfer after openly stating on numerous occasions that 22-year-old Fernandez wouldn’t leave Benfica unless it was on the conditions of the Portuguese powerhouses.

Once all payments have been made to Benfica, the transfer might end up costing Chelsea a British record-breaking £115 million, surpassing the £100 million Manchester City spent Aston Villa for Jack Grealish in the summer of 2021.

There is still time for the deal to be completed before the winter transfer window closes on Tuesday night, even if Fernandez skipped training with Benfica on Monday. Personal conditions had long been agreed upon with Fernandez.

Conor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are two players who could now be moved on by the club’s hierarchy amid a flurry of Premier League interest as a result of the breakthrough in negotiations.

Nottingham Forest, Southampton, Crystal Palace, and Newcastle United have all expressed interest in signing the 22-year-old England international, but it is believed that he wants to stay at Chelsea.

In order to compete for a regular first-team spot at Stamford Bridge, Gallagher returned to his parent club at the beginning of the summer after spending the previous campaign on loan at Crystal Palace.

Last season, the 22-year-old thrived under Patrick Vieira, contributing to Palace’s mid-table finish with eight goals and three assists.

Gallagher was believed to have no desire to quit Chelsea despite still being chosen to play for the first team after returning to Stamford Bridge.

Because of the growing injury issue in his team, Potter is also opposed to letting Gallagher go.

As the January transfer season continues, Newcastle are considering a number of attacking possibilities, including Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech, according to reports.

Ziyech is one of many Chelsea players who have been given permission to move during this window. The 29-year-old was hoping to leave Chelsea last summer, but since clubs like Ajax and AC Milan were unable to reach an agreement, he is now trying to move this month.

Ziyech is eager to play regular first-team football after a successful World Cup with semifinalists Morocco, but he is aware that it will probably only be achievable away from Stamford Bridge.

Graham Potter, the manager of Chelsea, said that he closely observed Ziyech in Qatar and was impressed, but admits he can’t promise him the regular chance the player wants.

Potter said: “We know his qualities and we like him as a player. At Chelsea there are always good players that aren’t in the starting XI. [I am] delighted for him to get the game time and help [Morocco]. I kept in touch with him throughout the World Cup.”

Newcastle was one among the clubs that responded positively to Ziyech’s representatives’ efforts to pique their interest in signing him.

Selling Ziyech is Chelsea’s ideal scenario. The most likely course of action, though, is a loan, and Newcastle might be interested in doing so given that the player has more than two years left on his present contract.

Newcastle and Eddie Howe would like more attacking options going into the latter part of the season, along with a midfielder and a right-back. But as a result of Financial Fair Player concerns, they look unlikely to spend big in January at this moment in time.
