The Premier League has announced the nominees for the first Player and Manager of the Month awards of 2025.

Seven players from six different clubs are in contention, including December’s winner, Alexander Isak of Newcastle United, who aims to become the first player to win back-to-back awards since Marcus Rashford in February 2023.

Meanwhile, four managers are in the running to claim the first managerial honor of the year, with the league set to crown its fifth different winner of the season.

No player in the Premier League scored more goals in January than Phil Foden, who has rediscovered top form for Manchester City. The dynamic midfielder found the net six times in just four games against West Ham, Brentford, Ipswich, and Chelsea, also providing an assist against Kieran McKenna’s side.

Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo made history in January, setting a new Dutch record by scoring in a sixth consecutive Premier League home game, surpassing Robin van Persie and Ruud van Nistelrooy. He capped off the month with a standout performance against Ipswich.

In defense, Bournemouth’s highly sought-after center-back Dean Huijsen earns a nomination after making an immediate impact. Since his introduction to the starting lineup, the Cherries have gone unbeaten, securing victories over Everton, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest while drawing against Chelsea. His teammate Justin Kluivert also shined, registering five goals and two assists.

Reigning Player of the Month Alexander Isak is aiming to defend his crown following an electrifying January for Newcastle United. The Swedish striker bagged five goals, bringing his season tally to 17 in just 21 appearances, while also recording his fifth assist of the campaign.

Crystal Palace fans had plenty of chances to chant about Jean-Philippe Mateta, who delivered four goals in as many games, punishing Chelsea, Leicester, and West Ham.

Rounding out the shortlist is Brentford’s ever-reliable Bryan Mbeumo. With four more goals in January, the forward also created 13 chances for his teammates—only three players in the league managed more.

After moving to Liverpool, Ryan Gravenberch said he’s looking forward to hearing the Kop sing “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

On deadline day, the Reds formally announced the signing of Gravenberch from Bayern Munich after the player signed a long-term contract with the club.

The four midfielders Jurgen Klopp’s team has added only this summer alone include the Dutch international. In a new-look midfield following the losses of long-serving Liverpool stars Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, who both moved to the Saudi Pro League, Gravenberch joins Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Wataru Endo.

Speaking to the club’s official website after making the move to Anfield, Gravenberch revealed what he’s excited about after putting pen to paper: “I’m very happy. Very happy that the deal is done and I’m finally here.

Gravenberch also admitted that he spoke to international teammates Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo about his move to Anfield in the days leading up to the transfer.

“Before the move, I spoke a lot with the guys, they said we have a good team, everything is top here. Actually, my decision was quick,” he added.

The loss of Gravenberch and the failure to sign Joao Palhinha from Fulham left Bayern Munich desperately short in the midfield. Only three senior midfielders remain for Thomas Tuchel to select from as the Bavarians prepare for a critical UEFA Champions League campaign.

The Reds reportedly paid £35.4 million for the Dutch international in January, but he struggled in his first few Premier League games while playing out on the left flank.

Gakpo, though, began to truly find his stride at Anfield after being switched into a centre striker position, and he was able to end the season with a respectable tally of seven Premier League goals.

Gakpo has expressed his love for his new position and said he would be eager to play in the striker position for the Dutch national team ahead of his participation in the Nations League finals this week.

“Now that I’m playing at Liverpool I think it’s a nice position,” he told the media. “I have become convinced that being a striker suits me.

“Guus Hiddink was the first [to use Gakpo as a striker]. He spent a while at PSV as a sounding board, saw me play and said: ‘You have to become a striker or a false nine’. I didn’t want to believe it then. And then when Roger Schmidt said the same thing later at PSV when he was coach, I was even more stubborn. It felt good on the left flank.

“But at the last World Cup I was already more central on the field and at Liverpool permanently in the past six months. It’s been good. I’m excited now to get better in the position in the near future, for the club as well as the national team.”

Due to Memphis Depay’s injury, Gakpo might have the opportunity to play as the national team’s number nine against Croatia on Wednesday. Due to a thigh injury, the Atletico Madrid attacker is now out.

At Liverpool, Cody Gakpo is enjoying his new role as a playmaking midfielder, where he is having “way more fun” in a successful endeavour.

Since the Netherlands international completed a high-profile deal to Anfield during the winter transfer window, questions have been raised about his optimal position.

The 24-year-old was a standout attacker for his previous team, PSV, playing either through the middle or on the wings. He has also played both the wings and centre striker in England.

Gakpo did, however, benefit from Jurgen Klopp dropping him a bit deeper for the Reds’ build-up play against Brentford last time out, which allowed him to start Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, and Darwin Nunez together.

Gakpo has told reporters of his position switch: “I enjoy playing for sure and I’m looking where I can help the team the most. Sometimes that’s a little bit deeper in the midfield and sometimes it’s in the striker’s position. I just enjoy playing with my team-mates, and especially when you win it is way more fun!”

After making a slow start to his spell in the Premier League, Gakpo now has six goals and two assists to his name and has helped the Reds to six successive victories in the English top flight. He added on finding form as an individual and a collective: “It’s a great feeling [to win six games in a row] but the season isn’t over yet. I think we just have to stay focused, keep working hard and try to win the last three as well. I’m really happy with the win and looking forward to the next game already.”

On May 15, Liverpool will return to action when they travel to Leicester. Klopp’s team is just one point behind Manchester United in the hunt for a top-four finish, despite having played one more game than their Old Trafford rivals.

With his two goals against Leeds on Monday, Mohamed Salah surpassed Robbie Fowler’s Premier League record for the most left-footed goals.

The Egyptian international scored twice as Liverpool defeated Leeds United 6-1 at Elland Road to end a winless streak of five games.

From the edge of the penalty area, he scored his first goal in the 39th minute with a left-footed shot that found the top corner.

It was his 106th Premier League goal with his left foot, which dethroned former Reds striker Fowler from the summit, who had held the record for 16 years. Salah did not have to wait long for the second as he completed his brace in the 64th minute after being set up by Cody Gakpo to take his tally of left-foot goals up to 107.

In terms of active players, Riyad Mahrez of Manchester City is Salah’s closest rival, although the Algerian has already scored 65 goals with his left foot. The other top ten players no longer compete in the Premier League.

This Premier League season, Salah has been on a streak that has broken records. He surpassed Fowler’s record of 128 Premier League goals for Liverpool and became the team’s first player to score in six successive games against Manchester United back in March.

He scored the opening goal in a more recent match against Manchester City to surpass Michael Owen’s 55-goal record and become Liverpool’s all-time best away scorer in the Premier League.

When Liverpool hosts Nottingham Forest in their Premier League game on Saturday, Salah will look to keep up his strong run of play as Jurgen Klopp’s team keeps pushing for a top-four spot.

Cody Gakpo has talked about his current position in Liverpool tactical setup while acknowledging that he is uncertain of the long-term strategy.

After struggling in his first few games, the Dutch international joined Liverpool in January for a reported £35.4 million. In February and March, he started to feel more at ease and scored four goals, including two against Manchester United in a record 7-0 victory.

Despite Gakpo’s improvement in play and the victory over Manchester United, Liverpool has struggled to win games lately and is currently on a streak of four games without a victory.

In a news conference, Gakpo talked about the team’s recent struggles and their impending match against Arsenal while also highlighting some of their better recent performances.

“I think if you see this game [against Chelsea], we got a point here and it is a small step in the right direction and for me it is something for the club to get some momentum again and start winning games again,” he said.

“Obviously when you don’t have support from the home crowd it’s slightly different but I don’t know. We just have to be better in the away games. We wanted to win here but in the end we made a step in the right direction if you compare it to the last game, so we have to keep building on that and improve.

“I think we have a great squad and a lot of quality. We have to show it again like we have in some other games and then you see that the gap is not that big [to Arsenal].

“Unfortunately we also haven’t shown it in other games and we haven’t got the points but we must show it again. We know what we are capable of.”

The forward also discussed the ambiguity surrounding his ideal position. Gakpo recently played as a number nine, although he acknowledged that he is unclear about his tactical future.

“I have played almost every game in that central position and for me it is just about getting used to that position. I don’t know the long-term plan, you will have to ask the manager,” he added.

“For sure [Firmino has helped], Bobby is an amazing player and person. He tries to help me where I can and I really appreciate that. I like to be here and having a good time.”

In what was arguably the biggest Premier League thrashing of all time, Liverpool destroyed Manchester United 7-0 at Anfield.

After Liverpool’s historic 7-0 thrashing of Manchester United at Anfield, Mohamed Salah broke the record for Premier League goals scored, thereby ending United’s chances of joining the race for the title.

The future of the Reds’ forward line paved the way as Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo scored twice to demolish their arch-rivals with a result which was the largest victory in the fixture’s 211-match history.

Three of their goals came in a seven-minute spell either side of half-time which left the visitors, who have not won on this ground since Jurgen Klopp’s first encounter with them in January 2016, reeling.

The soon-to-be last man standing of Liverpool’s famed front three Salah then provided a timely reminder of the standards that pair have to meet with two goals of his own – either side of a Nunez header – to go past Robbie Fowler as the club’s record Premier League scorer with his 128th and 129th goals.

Substitute Roberto Firmino, who on Friday told the club he would not seek a contract extension and would end his eight-year stay in the summer, applied the finishing touches with the seventh. Last season Liverpool won 5-0 at Old Trafford and 4-0 at home but that was a side who were competing for an unprecedented quadruple.

This version has struggled most of the season but appears to be gathering ominous momentum at just the right time.

Even overturning a 5-2 Champions League first-leg deficit to Real Madrid next week now does not seem as impossible.

Erik ten Hag’s side had lost just three of their last 22 league matches and their haul of 23 points since the World Cup resumption was the most of any team but by the end, with chants of ‘Ole’ rolling off the Kop, former United defender Gary Neville said they had played like schoolboys.

They had arrived looking to force their way into the reckoning at the top but defeat left them nine points behind second-placed Manchester City and 14 adrift of leaders Arsenal and even with a match in hand talk of a title bid now looks fanciful.

Liverpool, however, are upwardly mobile as 13 points from the last 15 and a fifth successive clean sheet has them breathing down the neck of fourth-placed Tottenham, just three points behind with a match in hand and Spurs still to visit Anfield.

In an almost symbolic handing over of the baton Gakpo, now occupying a similar deeper-lying forward role to Firmino but with potentially more goal threat, seized the occasion with the crucial opening goal. And what a brilliant one it was.

Just two minutes before half-time Andy Robertson’s through-ball inside Fred allowed the Netherlands international to cut inside Raphael Varane and chop back onto his right foot to caress a shot past David De Gea.

It was Liverpool’s first shot on target but would not be their last as two minutes after the break 19-year-old Harvey Elliott started the move which led to his assist for the second goal.

Having intercepted a pass deep in United territory the ball was moved on to Fabinho who chipped over the back four to Salah and while Luke Shaw blocked his cross, Elliott reacted quickest to whip a cross for Nunez to head home from close range.

Three minutes later the game was over as a contest as Jordan Henderson collected Bruno Fernandes’ poor cross aimed at no one, Gakpo then picked up the ball just outside his own penalty area and released Salah.

The Egypt international teased Lisandro Martinez, eventually putting the World Cup winner on the turf, as he played in the on-rushing Gakpo to clip over De Gea.

Goalkeeper Alisson Becker’s mis-control briefly gave Fernandes the hope of pulling one back quickly but the ball was scrambled clear and when Nunez broke in a four-on-three there was only likely to be one outcome.

The Uruguay international’s first attempt at a pass was blocked by Scott McTominay but he picked out Salah with the rebound, deflected off the United midfielder, and he lashed home off the underside of the crossbar with his weaker right foot.

He was the first Liverpool player to score in six consecutive appearances in all competitions against Manchester United but he was not finished there with visiting fans heading for the exit Nunez’s clever backward header from Henderson’s cross had the crowd demanding demanding “We want six.

Salah duly delivered with his record-breaking goal, courtesy of a fortunate rebound off Firmino before the substitute had the final say in the 88th minute to inflict United’s heaviest defeat since losing 7-0 to Wolves on Boxing Day 1931.

Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has stated that he thinks Cody Gakpo may have joined Liverpool too soon in his career.

The forward was signed for £37m from PSV Eindhoven during the January transfer window following some eye-catching FIFA World Cup performances in Qatar, but Gakpo has failed to live up to expectations thus far.

The 23-year-old is yet to score for the Reds and has not even won a game with his new club despite making six appearances.

Speaking on Andy van der Meyde’s YouTube show, the new Netherlands coach Koeman – who took over after the World Cup – stated that the move to Liverpool perhaps came too soon for Gakpo:

“The level in England is higher than in the Netherlands, but they are also young boys, aren’t they? Like [Ryan] Gravenberch going to Bayern and not playing. Then that is difficult.

“You can see that, that he [Gakpo] has ended up in a team that is not doing well. Then it becomes more difficult for him, as a new signing. You are tested right away. And if you don’t score or you’re not important and you don’t win any matches, it’s very difficult, especially for a young player. If that’s was someone aged 28 with experience, it would be different.”

According to a new report from the Netherlands, Chelsea FC have agreed to sign Noni Madueke from PSV Eindhoven as part of the club’s ongoing spending binge.

Chelsea have agreed to sign PSV starlet Madueke effective immediately, continuing an impressive January spending spree, according to Dutch football journalist Rik Elfrink.

Cody Gakpo, who had an outstanding start to the 2022–23 season and a similarly spectacular World Cup performance, was sold by PSV earlier this month, making it their first sale of attacking talent this month. The 20-year-old Madueke now appears destined for Stamford Bridge and the Premier League with Chelsea allowed to discuss personal terms and arrange a medical with a fee verbally agreed, according to Nizaar Kinsella.

A winger and attacking midfielder, Madueke spent time in the youth ranks at Crystal Palace and Tottenham before relocating to the Netherlands, where he rose through the ranks at PSV. Madueke was born in Barnet.

Head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy conceded that the club wouldn’t be able to turn down an offer from Chelsea if it was strong enough, which now appears to have played out.

Chelsea have pulled no punches in the winter transfer market thus far as they desperately try and reshape their squad amid a difficult time on the pitch for Graham Potter’s side. Madueke follows the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile, David Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos and loan signing Joao Felix to Stamford Bridge.

Now that a fee has been agreed upon, it seems more a matter of when than if the deal will be completed. However, personal terms and a medical appointment have not yet been scheduled, so Chelsea shouldn’t expect to see the England under-21 team play just yet. On Saturday, Liverpool will host Potter’s team.

Jurgen Klopp has acknowledged that he ‘can’t see’ Liverpool making any more signings during the January transfer window.

The Reds have endured a disappointing season thus far and sit in ninth place – a whopping 10 points off the top four – following recent defeats to Brentford and Brighton.

There have been suggestions for Klopp to strengthen the squad in January given Liverpool’s performance and recent injury issues. Although the club has so far signed Cody Gakpo, Klopp said during his press conference on Monday that it was doubtful the team will sign anyone else:

“It must be a language issue that you ask these questions again and again. We look outside [for players] as well, it’s not that we are stubborn and think that we’ll go with these boys [current players] until 2050 or whatever, that’s not how we see it.

But we have an existing squad as well – we are underperforming, definitely, I know that – I cannot sit here all of the time and blame everybody else, the players and stuff like this, it’s my responsibility that they perform and that’s my first concern. That’s my first job to do.

“Yes we have limited options, but we have players with a contract here and they are just unavailable. If they were all in [and fit] then it would be a different situation.

“Will we have to strengthen? Yes. Is this the right moment for it? I can’t see it because of the situation we are in and I think I know exactly how the situation is and that’s it pretty much, I cannot change the answer every week because the situation doesn’t change.”

Liverpool have confirmed that Cody Gakpo has been formally registered as a new player following his move from PSV Eindhoven and revealed when the player will make his debut for the club.

The Dutchman’s transfer to Anfield was finalized late last month, with Liverpool forking over an initial £37m to beat out Manchester United, who had been following Gakpo since the summer.

Manager Jurgen Klopp had initially stated there was a chance Gakpo could have featured in the weekend’s defeat to Brentford if the paperwork could be finalised in time, which obviously did not happen.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has stated that new recruit Cody Gakpo will most likely play on the left side of a front three but has praised the 23-year-old’s versatility in filling a variety of offensive positions if necessary.

Gakpo, who had an outstanding 18 months at PSV Eindhoven and most recently shined for the Netherlands at the World Cup, has now signed a deal with the Reds worth up to £50 million.

Manchester United had been leading the chase, but Liverpool ended up beating their Premier League rivals to what could end up being one of the biggest deals this January.

“He’s a really, really good player so the package is really interesting. That’s why we were very interested to get him in and I’m really happy we could do it,” Klopp said at a press conference on Thursday, adding that it was a ‘great day’ for all involved.

The Liverpool boss was also pleased that there wasn’t so much as a sniff of the deal publicly until it was all but over the line.

“To bring in Cody the way we did is a really good sign. Quite a few people knew about it and nothing came out which is very, very helpful,” he explained.

As for where Liverpool fans might expect to see Gakpo on the pitch, Klopp has a clear idea already.

“The position he has played most often is on the left, that is clear. But he can play all four positions up front if you play a 4-2-3-1 and is still very young. The position he probably prefers he can play is on the left of a 4-3-3,” the Liverpool boss explained.

The Reds signed Luis Diaz this time last year to play on the left, then allowed Sadio Mane to head to Bayern Munich in the summer. But the Colombian has spent much of the season sidelined through injury, with fellow forward Diogo Jota also unavailable.

Klopp insisted that the decision to sign Gakpo was not influenced by the absences of Diaz and Jota, stressing the decision to recruit was made some time ago. The only influential factor in that sense, he said, might have been the decision to do it now rather than wait until the summer.

“We decided to do something from the sports point of view without having a green light from the financial side two or three months ago. In the end because we did it early, it might have been influenced,” the boss commented.
