Renowned Nigerian music video director, Clarence Peters has expressed his happiness with the success of fellow video director, TG Omori.

Clarence who is known as one of Nigeria’s best music video directors shared how TG Omori’s success in the industry has helped.

The Cinematographer in an interview on Pulseng’s Terms and Conditions Podcast shared that he loves how TG is prospering in the music Industry.

According to him, TG’s popularity is allowing him to breathe and have time for himself to work on personal projects.

He disclosed that his social media teams always inform him about netizens who try to compare him with TG and he doesn’t bother about it.

In his words;

“I love what’s happening with TG, cos it’s allowing me breathe. Anytime the social media team will tell me, anytime he drops a video, people will be like ‘Clarence where is he, this affecting you’ and am like ‘oh yes, okay cool, let them say all that, this is time for you to be able to breathe and start to build your own things.”

He also praised the new generation of Music video Directors, stating that they are smarter than his generation and are diversifying the kind of content they create.

Clarence also addressed the challenges that come with the kind of work he does, stating that the new generation is giving into the pressure of the Industry.

He referenced veteran Music video Director, DJ Tee who he said was overwhelmed by the pressures that come with the work.

Ace Nigerian music video director, Clarence Peters, has disclosed that he burst into tears when Afrobeats and Dancehall singer, Burna Boy won a Grammy award.

He said this when speaking on the Pulse Podcast Network, saying that the historic event had given him nostalgia and joy.

At the 2021 Grammy Awards, Burna Born, real name Damini Ogulu, won Best Global Music Album for “Twice as Tall.”

Clarence claimed that seeing the “Dangote” singer declared as the winner brought back memories of the great broadcasters Kenny Ogungbe and Dayo D1 Adeneye.

He also revealed that Kenny Ogungbe was the first person he called after hearing the news, but he did not pick up.

In his words;

Watching him win, really just…Because I cried, I cried because of where I flashed all the way back to Raypower. I flashed all the way back to Kenny and D1 from Raypower. It was almost in my head and everything just played…at every single point when you will have people telling you its can’t happen, and people will say it will happen but didn’t really believe it would happen. And wen I saw him win, the first person I called was Kenny but he didn’t pick at that time.”

The music director also spoke on how he felt being able to hoot Burna’s Grammy performance. He bragged about being the Michael Jordan of Nigerian Music Videos Directors.

“Being able to shoot the performance, people don’t understand one thing, If the Grammy happen now, then they would do it at the Grammy stage with their people. Beinga ble to shoot Burna’s performance and it being aired, that’s it.”

Here are some Nigerian music videos that look similar to foreign music videos.

Phyno (Ghostmode) & Lil Wayne (John)

This one may have been inspired by the theme, but a sequence from Lil Wayne’s John was clearly copied.

The sequence with Rick Ross in a wheelchair is eerily similar to the scene in Phyno’s Ghost mode video with Olamide in a small wheelchair.

Rick Ross and Olamide, who are both in such same scenes, are both featured artists on both tracks, by coincidence (or not).

Ice Prince (VIP) & Slaughterhouse (My Life)

Ice Prince, on the other hand, takes the cake. The video in question is the most extreme example of our subject, as it not only recreates the Slaughterhouse original video scene by scene but also appears to have jacked the footage of the plane sequence entirely.

The initial sequence, in which Crooked I of Slaughterhouse changes an old car into a sleek new whip, is identical to what we see Ice Prince do, and then it moves on to imitate the Press scene, the flight scene, and everything else in the video. It was a brutal cloning procedure.

Phyno (Fuwa Sewa) & Snoop Doggg (Drop It Like Its Hot)

This is an unequivocal and unashamed heist.

There is no purpose of hiding it in this case, as the introduction of Phyno’s video is identical to the opening of Snoop Dogg’s video, which features an image being graffitied on a wall with black spray paint, and the same picture persists in the similar black and white movies till the end.

Just look at the beginnings of both videos. It’s incredible.

Tiwa Savage (Kele Kele) & Rihanna (Rudeboy)

In this situation, we can assume that Rihanna’s video influenced Tiwa’s debut direction.

The tones of the colours used to create the creative paper march look are similar, but there is one element in Rihanna’s video that looks a bit too familiar: the visual effect in which the dancing girl is split into three areas.

In Tiwa’s video, the same technique is done to the dancing male.

Small Doctor (This Year) & Sean Paul (We Be Burning)

This was an obvious rip-off. The desert scenery and the position with Small Doctor in front of the camera and three dancers on the far left side are a carbon copy of Sean Paul’s We Be Burning.

Davido’s Skelewu vs LMFAO party Anthem

After a leak of his first video, Davido dropped another music video for his 2013 hit song, “Skelewu“.

The video which is seen as the official version was released on Monday, October 21, 2013. It was shot in the UK and directed by D.O.P Mr Moe Musa.

However, it wasn’t too long before people noticed the similarities between it and LMFAO‘s 2011′s ‘Party rock anthem‘ video.

“Party Rock Anthem” video starts with RedFoo and SkyBlu waking up from a coma in the hospital, hitting the streets to notice the town has been deserted.

Just when they get on the road, someone comes to warn them about a song that has caused a frenzy in the town, then a bunch of crazy dancers get close to them and start dancing, LMFAO later joins the dance.

The above description just about sums up Davido’s ‘Skelewu‘ video too; Davido waking up from a coma, hitting the streets to be warned by a young man

Tiwa Savage’s ‘Eminado vs Tumi Molekane’s ‘Asinamali’

Just like Phyno, Tiwa Savage appears twice on this list, this time for “Eminado” music video.

In 2014, Clarence Peters was called out for copying foreign music videos to shoot various Nigerian music videos and of one them was Tiwa’s “Eminado“.

The concept for the Tiwa video was taken from South African rapper, Tumi Molekane’s ‘Asinamali’ video. While Tumi’s video is in black and white, Tiwa’s was in retro-like colour.

Interestingly Clarence is also the director behind Ice Prince’s “VIP” video which is also on our list.

In 2020, K-pop fans took to social media to decry the uncanny similarities between Lyta’s video for the song “Hold Me Down” And “Just Right” by South Korean K-pop boy band GOT7.

Just like Ice Prince’s “VIP” video”, Lyta’s “Hold Me Down” from the beginning already shares the same concept as GOT7’s video.

Although in Lyta’s case, he gave a shoutout to the group and BTS, another Korean group whose concept he also copied in the description of the video on youtube.

Majek Fashek

Majekodunmi Fasheke, also known as Majek Fashek, died in his sleep in New York City on June 1, 2020. He had oesophagal cancer and was 57 years old.

Tributes flooded in from all over the world for the renowned singer, who had contributed tremendously to the country’s music landscape with singles like “Send Down the Rain” and “So Long for Too Long.”

Majek Fashek, also known as “The Rainmaker,” was an activist who used his music to fight societal injustices, particularly his 1988 album “Prisoner of Conscience.”

Victor Olaiya

Veteran trumpeter and highlife musician, Victor Olaiya’s music dominated many people’s hearts in the 1950s and 1960s.

Known as the “evil genius of highlife,”  Dr. Victor Abimbola Olaiya OOON died in February 2020 at the age of 89 after succumbing to an unidentified ailment while undergoing treatment at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

Olaiya is credited with helping to shape Nigeria’s music industry, having established himself as one of the country’s first widely successful performers in the genre during the 1960s.

BigLo

Lotanna Udezue aka BigLo, a music producer, rapper, and singer, died after a long battle with kidney disease. BigLo is said to have died on Saturday, December 26, 2020. Olofin, a singer and jazz musician, confirmed his death on Instagram.

BigLo rose to prominence in 2004 thanks to the hit single “Delicious,” which featured 2shotz. In 2019, the rapper disclosed that he was suffering from kidney disease.

He revealed this on his Gofundme page, where he stated that he was diagnosed with renal kidney failure.

Dokta Frabz

Ayorinde Faboro aka Dokta Frabz, a Nigerian producer, was purportedly killed in the United States in 2020. On February 27, 2020, news of his passing made the rounds on social media, with other celebrities expressing their condolences.

Dokta Frabz began his music career in Lagos, where he was born and bred.

He began his musical career as a pianist and drummer at Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral in Ikeja, Lagos.

He started off working for Don Jazzy and D’Banj’s Mo’ Hits Records before working with other artists, including Wizkid, Omawumi, Davido and the late Dagrin.

Through his collaborations with the late Dagrin on the song “Thank God,” “Joy” from Wizkid’s sophomore album Ayo, four songs on Naeto C’s sophomore album Super C Season, and multiple singles with regular collaborator Omawumi, he achieved mainstream popularity.

DJ Babus

Babatunde Bello aka DJ Babus, a Nigerian disc jockey, died on January 29, 2021, from COVID-19 complications. He worked for a number of companies before his death, including Four Points by Sheraton, where he was the resident DJ from 2014 to 2015.

He worked as a Talent Manager at KnightHouse, The Creative Entertainment Company, where well-known talents such as Mo Cheddah and Phenom came to fame.

Sound Sultan

Nigerian singer and actor Sound Sultan has died after losing battle with cancer at the age of 44 years old.

The singer passed away Sunday, July 11, 2021 and was buried the same day.

In the 1990s, he began his career in show business by hosting performances to collect funds for studio sessions. In the year 2000, he launched his first single, “Jagbajantis,” which became an instant hit in Nigeria.

He was signed by Kennis Music after independently releasing other singles and appearing in hit songs by other musicians. He released four albums under this label.

Aside from being a singer, Sound Sultan was also a rapper, actor and basketball club owner.

Kodak

On April 29th, 2020, Nigerian video vixen and dancer Kodak died after allegedly being electrocuted while charging her phone. The incident was said to have occurred at Capital Dreams, the production company belonging to popular Video director, Clarence Peters.

Kodak was a popular dancer who had appear in music videos for a wide range of artists.

Obama DMW

Habeeb Uthman, popularly known as Obama DMW, was a close friend of Nigerian music sensation Davido and died after experiencing breathing difficulties.

He died in a hospital in Lekki, Lagos, in June, just a few hours after driving himself to the hospital for treatment.

Despite the efforts of the on-duty doctors, he died.

He was born in Lagos State and began managing future artists in his institution of learning, despite the fact that he was a science student.

Obama DMW was the founder and CEO of the Obama Music Worldwide (OMW) record label until his death. He was also an important member of the DMW crew.
