The Standup comedian asserts that the earlier incident is behind him and that he even made a joke about Smith comparing him to the imprisoned Hip-Hop rapper Suge Knight.

Will Smith, a 52-year-old actor, made this humorous action after he submitted an apology video to his social media account.

He claims that everyone is attempting to be sympathetic, but no one notices when the real victim is present. If this were the case, no one would be interested in hearing from the true victim, he claims.

Chris Rock made the amusing claim that he had to quickly ascertain what had occurred after being struck by a powerful Knight.

He acknowledged that the day after he was assaulted, he went to work since he has a family to provide for and kids to feed.

Nigerian musician and comedian Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basketmouth, has explained in detail why comedians don’t intentionally make people feel bad.

He stated that comedians do not purposely make people feel bad because their goal is to make people laugh, and in many cases, laugh at their own pain.

In an exclusive interview with Punch, the comedian stated that jokes were always based on a subject.

He also stated that would not be discouraged from mentioning people’s behaviour, experiences, or personalities while performing his job because Will Smith attacked Chris Rock at the Oscars.

He said:“Jokes always have a subject and that can be anyone and not everyone finds a joke funny especially if that joke is centred on you or your experiences. Comedians don’t intentionally want to make you feel bad, they just want to make people laugh and, in many cases, laugh at their pain.

“Nigeria is already incredibly hard and frustrating so we might as well try to look for what’s funny about this mess so we don’t go crazy. If you crack a joke about broke people (poor folks), it’s a joke at the expense of people in a precarious condition. People make jokes about crazy people, disabled people as well as rich people, healthy people and the scale goes that way as well.

“Either way you end up offending somebody when you take yourself too seriously. It’s just a joke – a story telling art form that aims to lighten a serious situation. I know with what Will (Smith) did especially in Nigeria where we like to copy a lot, we will have a couple of attention seekers and copycats try to emulate that just to trend but there’s only one Chris Rock and not every comedian can show that kind of restraint or professionalism.

“We need to respect the art form though, respect the other people at the show (the audience). Anyone offended can express their feelings after the show. On whether the attack on Chris will influence or reshape the way we do comedy is a huge NO. It will not in any way or form change anything about my craft.

Will Smith has won an Academy Award, however, he is no longer a member of the Academy.

On Friday, the actor, 53, announced his departure from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, just five days after shocking Hollywood and the world by slapping Chris Rock on the stage at the 94th Academy Awards in response to a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

“The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home,” Smith said in a statement provided to EW.

“I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken. I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film.”

Calling his actions “shocking, painful, and inexcusable,” Smith also said he had responded to a disciplinary hearing notice from the Academy and would “fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct.”

He concluded by saying, “Change takes time, and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason.”

In response, AMPAS president David Rubin said in a statement, “We have received and accepted Mr. Will Smith’s immediate resignation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. We will continue to move forward with our disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, in advance of our next scheduled board meeting on April 18.”

Smith and the Academy have been enveloped in controversy since Sunday when Smith struck Rock during the presentation of the award for Best Documentary Feature.

Smith confronted Rock on stage after the comedian make a joke about Pinkett Smith’s shaved head; the actress has alopecia and has been candid about her struggles with the condition.

After returning to his seat amid a stunned audience, Smith yelled at Rock, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f—ing mouth.”

Smith was not removed from the ceremony, and less than an hour later he won Best Actor for his performance as Richard Williams, the father of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams, in King Richard.

During his acceptance speech, Smith apologized to the Academy and attempted to explain his actions, saying, “Love will make you do crazy things,” though he did not mention Rock by name.

In an Instagram post on Monday, Smith apologized to Rock, as well as the Academy, the show’s producers, the attendees, global viewers, the Williams family, and his King Richard collaborators.

Rock declined to press charges against Smith, according to the LAPD.

After tweeting that the Academy “does not condone violence of any form” on Sunday night, the organization issued a stronger condemnation of Smith’s outburst on Monday, and launched a formal review of the incident.

During a show in Boston at the Wilbur Theater, the comedian addressed the issue, by asking his audience, “How was your weekend?”

He said:

“I don’t have a bunch of s— about what happened,” “I had like a whole show I wrote before this weekend. I’m kinda processing what happened. So at some point, I’ll talk about that s—.”

Smith has since apologized to the Academy for his actions, but the Academy announced on Wednesday that he will face disciplinary action against Smith “for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behaviour, and compromising the integrity of the Academy.”
