Speaking during an interview on Yanga FM, the 29-year-old artist reflected on the emotional toll the skin condition took on his confidence and public image, especially at a time when his career was beginning to gain momentum.

“I struggled with acne years back. It was terrible. My desperation to cure it led me to buy a makeup that almost disfigured my face. It was embarrassing. I almost quit music. I couldn’t even approach women then. After my breakthrough song ‘Zoom’ and I got signed by a record label, it dawned on me that I would be attending interviews and would be in front of cameras. I am a perfectionist. So, I went to get a makeup from a store to clear but instead it almost disfigured my face. I woke up one morning and realised that my whole face has been damaged,” he recalled.

According to Cheque, the experience left him extremely self-conscious, affecting not only his artistry but also his social interactions. As someone who describes himself as a perfectionist, the fear of being constantly in front of cameras made the situation even more overwhelming.

The rapper explained that the ordeal forced him into a period of deep self-awareness, where being in public spaces or facing the spotlight became uncomfortable. What should have been a celebratory moment following the success of his breakout single “Zoom” turned into a personal struggle behind the scenes.

Today, his story stands as a reminder that even rising stars face private battles and that resilience often plays a quiet but powerful role in shaping success.

• Blaqbonez recalls university in OAU days alongside peers who became stars

Nigerian rapper Blaqbonez has sent fans into a wave of nostalgia after reflecting on his university days, where he shared the same campus with artists who would later become Afrobeats powerhouses.

In a recently surfaced interview clip on Monday, September 22, 2025, the Chocolate City rapper revealed that he, Asake, Fireboy DML, and Superboy Cheque were all students at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Osun State, during the same period.

Ladipoe formerly (Poe)

He went by Poe prior to signed with Mavins Records in 2017. However, he adopted the name Ladipoe to circumvent concerns about copyright infringement. This is supported by a tweet from Don Jazzy, the head of Mavin Records, in response to the event involving another artist’s name change.

Olamide formerly (G-dogg)

The famous baddo we all celebrate today has had his own change in identity. He was formerly known as known as “G DOGG”. The name “G DoGG” was changed to Olamide by I.D Cabasa on the day Baddo recorded the street banger of devotion Eni duro.
Sinzu formerly (Sauce Kid)

In 2005, Sinzu debuted with the song “Omoge wa jo,” featuring seasoned musician Mike Okri. He followed up this breakthrough with hit singles including “Carolina” ft. Davido, “Under G,” and “Yebariba.” Sinzu officially dropped the name “Saucekid” on July 17, 2012, as he stated via Twitter.

The rapper disclosed the personalities represented by the names Sinzu and Saucekid in an interview with Hip TV’s Nancy Isime. According to him, Sauce Kid is more violent and a gangster while Sinzu is more approachable and Nigerian.

Show Dem Camp

The journey of this duo go way back to their youthful days. Tec and Ghost were both solo rappers until they ran into each other at a rap battleground and realized they shared the same stage name, “Golden Child.” Immediately after that, they teamed up to establish a rap duo under the ephemeral stage names Loose Cannonz, BlackBoysDown, and Third Eye Renegades before settling on Show Dem Camp. In addition to becoming record label owners, they have changed from being simply rappers.

Cheque formerly Kyle B

Cheque began his career as a musician under the alias Kyle B when he was still a University undergraduate. Gospel hip hop was in particular his musical style. As Kyle B, he contributed to Hennessy Cypher (Part VI), which featured artists including Dark Poet, Kursor, Blaqbonez, Toosleek, and Eclipse.

He also gained prominence in school with the name and released the extended play Super Adventure Crew. On his way to global stardom, he was discovered by Phyno in 2019 and his story became a national sensation.

MI Abaga to The Guy

He wrote, “After over 15 Years as Mister Incredible, I will be retiring the name ‘MI Abaga’ and taking on a new name for a new project because my new project is hard AF and deserves a new name,” he wrote. “My final act as MI will be a performance at The Vibe on the 10th of July, where I will celebrate my legacy as Africa’s Greatest Rapper. See you all on stage.”

Nigerian singer, songwriter and rapper Akanbi Bamidele Brett, known by his stage name Cheque, is set to dominate the airwaves again as he revealed the tracklist, artwork and release for his second EP titled “Chequemate.”

On July 25, 2023, the singer took to his social media profile to announce the release of his new EP and to publicly apologize to his fans for the delay.

The Penthauze signee (Phyno’s mentee) initially stated that the body of work will be released on July 21st, however, that date has been pushed back a week and will now be officially launched on July 28th, 2023.

According to the artist, he wishes to provide the best for his fans and music lovers. This would be the second extended play from the artiste.

In 2020, Cheque released his debut EP, titled Razor, which featured five hit songs and quickly rose to the top of the Nigerian albums chart on iTunes. One of the EP’s songs, Zoom, has amassed over 26 million streams on Audiomack and reached the top of numerous music charts.

Later on in the year, the song, which served as the first single for the EP, received a nomination for “Popular Song of the Year” at the City People Music Awards.

Then came Cheque’s “Bravo” album, which put the up-and-coming artist back in the spotlight as one of the musicians in Nigeria’s music industry who has worked hard, developed, and is one to watch. Afrobeat superstar David Adedeji Adeleke OON, who is professionally known as Davido, has responded to a public apology released by singer Cheque following a video shared by the artist.

Cheque’s public apologies to Davido have drawn attention.

The public apology posted on his social media page read he meant no disrespect to Davido, and he recalled the singer had been there for him since day one.

He acknowledged that he should have done more research before posting and apologized.

Naturally, suspicions surrounded the apology’s motivations because rumours stated that the singer released a since-deleted video that many people had perceived as disrespectful to Chioma, Davido’s wife.

Cheque was shown in the video performing his recently released song while looking at photographs of women on his phone. As he zoomed, sang, and pointed to Davido and Chioma’s photo, he swiped past it to focus on just Chioma’s image.

Cheque issues public apology to Davido.

Singer and rapper, Cheque has sparked reactions after posting a public apology to the DMW music boss, Davido.

The public apology which was posted on his Twitter page read he meant no disrespect to Davido, and he recalled the singer had been there for him since day one.

He noted he did not carry out due diligence before posting and rendered his apology.

Of course, questions surrounded the reasons for the apology as rumors suggested that the singer had released a now-deleted video that many had viewed as rude to Davido’s wife, Chioma.

In the video, Cheque was viewing pictures of ladies on his phone while singing his newly released song. He got to Davido and his wife, Chioma’s picture, then swiped past it to only Chioma’s picture, while zooming, singing and pointing to it.
