Spanish defender Marc Cucurella has opened up on his decision to leave Chelsea FC ahead of the 2026/27 season, describing his switch to Real Madrid as a lifelong dream he could not ignore.

The left-back recently completed a high-profile move to the Santiago Bernabéu, bringing his Premier League spell to an end to return to Spain and join one of football’s most decorated clubs.

Speaking after sealing the transfer, Cucurella said the opportunity to represent Real Madrid was a decisive moment in his career, adding that he “had no doubts” once the offer arrived.

He also revealed that the prospect of working under returning manager José Mourinho influenced his decision, noting that the coach personally expressed his desire to work with him and made him feel central to the club’s plans.

Cucurella said:

“I was happy at Chelsea. But in life sometimes you need to change and you start new chapters that you don’t expect. For me and my family it was an opportunity we couldn’t refuse, and I’m very happy with the decision we made. When you’re a kid, you dream of playing for big teams, and I think Real Madrid is one of them”.

He continued:

“I want to win the Champions League at Real Madrid. They have the most UCLs, I want to be part of it”.

Despite the emotional exit, the defender insisted his departure from Chelsea was not driven by dissatisfaction but by ambition and the desire to take the next step in his career.

He expressed gratitude to Chelsea and supporters for his time in London while making clear that the move represents a fresh chapter in his professional journey rather than a reaction to any internal issues at Stamford Bridge.

With his arrival in Madrid, Cucurella now begins a new challenge at one of Europe’s biggest clubs, where expectations will be high as he looks to compete for major honours, including the UEFA Champions League.

The deal, which runs for six years, sees the 27-year-old make a return to Spain after five seasons in the Premier League, bringing an end to weeks of speculation over his future at Stamford Bridge.

According to reports, the transfer is valued at an initial €60m (around £52m/$70m), with the overall package expected to rise depending on performance-related add-ons. The move represents a significant investment from Madrid as they continue reshaping their squad for the next cycle of domestic and European dominance.

Cucurella initially joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in a £63m move four years ago. During his time in London, he made 163 appearances and was part of the squad that lifted both the UEFA Europa Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Real Madrid moved swiftly to secure his signature, identifying him as a priority target in their ongoing rebuild under new sporting direction. His arrival is expected to strengthen the left side of defence as the club looks to recover from two consecutive seasons without a major trophy.

In an official announcement, the club confirmed the agreement, stating:

“Real Madrid CF and Chelsea FC have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Marc Cucurella, who will be linked to our club for the next six seasons, until June 30, 2032.”

Chelsea also released a farewell statement acknowledging the defender’s contributions during his spell in West London:

“Marc Cucurella has completed a permanent transfer to Spanish La Liga side Real Madrid. Cucurella joined Chelsea in the summer of 2022 from Brighton & Hove Albion and was part of the team that lifted the UEFA Europa Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup last year.”

“During Cucurella’s stay at Stamford Bridge, the 27-year-old defender regularly represented the Spanish national team and won the UEFA European Championships in 2024. Everyone at Chelsea FC would like to thank Marc for his efforts during his time at the club and for the role he played in our recent achievements. We wish him every success as he begins the next stage of his career.”

Despite his achievements, the final months of Cucurella’s Chelsea spell were marked by growing speculation around his long-term role at the club. Reports suggested tensions had emerged following internal changes and a turbulent season that saw the team struggle for consistency.

The defender had also previously hinted at his openness to new challenges, including a possible return to his boyhood club FC Barcelona, though that move never materialised.

Real Madrid’s latest acquisition is widely viewed as the opening move in a broader squad overhaul. The club is expected to remain active in the transfer market, with further links to several top European names as they aim to re-establish their dominance.

With Cucurella now set to join up after international duty, Madrid’s rebuild appears to be gathering momentum under their new sporting project, signalling a clear intent to return to the summit of European football.

Xabi Alonso has officially been confirmed as the new manager of Chelsea, signing a long-term four-year contract that will see him take charge at Stamford Bridge from July 1 ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The appointment marks Alonso’s return to English football years after his successful spell as a player with Liverpool, while also signaling the beginning of another rebuild for Chelsea following a difficult campaign.

The 44-year-old replaces Liam Rosenior and arrives with a growing reputation as one of Europe’s most highly rated young coaches after his impressive managerial rise, which included a Bundesliga title-winning campaign with Bayer Leverkusen.

Chelsea’s season has largely fallen below expectations, with the club sitting ninth in the Premier League with only two matches remaining.

Their hopes of ending the campaign with silverware also disappeared after a narrow FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City under interim manager Calum McFarlane.

After leaving Real Madrid earlier this year, Alonso has now opted for a swift return to management, choosing Chelsea as the next chapter of his coaching journey.

Speaking after the announcement, Alonso expressed pride at taking over one of football’s biggest institutions.

“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club,” he said.

“From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.

“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.”

Chelsea, in an official statement, explained that Alonso’s leadership qualities and long-term vision played a major role in the decision.

“His appointment reflects the Club’s belief in his broad set of experiences, coaching quality and game model, leadership attributes, character and integrity, which were key to the decision to ask him to help lead the next phase of Chelsea’s journey,” the statement read.

With no European football currently expected next season, Alonso is likely to face immediate pressure to restore stability, identity, and competitiveness to a Chelsea side still searching for consistency in the post-Roman Abramovich era.

Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Xabi Alonso as Manager of the Men’s Team.

The Spaniard will begin his role on July 1, 2026, having agreed a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea Hit With Record Fine and Transfer Restrictions After Historical Financial Probe

Chelsea Football Club has been handed a major sanction following an investigation into financial irregularities linked to the club’s previous ownership.

The Premier League announced that the London club will pay a record fine and face transfer restrictions after uncovering undisclosed payments tied to past player transfers and agent deals. Despite the hefty punishment, Chelsea’s immediate first-team transfer plans are unlikely to be heavily affected.

Chelsea Transfer Ban: The Quick Breakdown

Record Fine for Historical Breaches

Chelsea has been fined £10.75 million—the largest penalty ever issued by the Premier League—after an inquiry revealed irregular payments connected to transfers and agents during the Roman Abramovich era. The violations reportedly involved secret payments made between 2011 and 2018 to players, agents, and third parties for deals involving stars such as Eden Hazard, Willian, and Samuel Eto’o.

Suspended First-Team Transfer Ban

The club has been handed a one-year ban on registering first-team players, but the restriction has been suspended for two years. This means Chelsea can still sign senior players immediately, provided no further breaches occur during the suspension period.

Academy Transfer Restrictions

Chelsea will, however, face immediate limitations at youth level. The club cannot register academy players from other English clubs for nine months, a restriction that primarily affects young talents already contracted elsewhere.

Self-Reporting Helped Mitigate Punishment

Chelsea’s new ownership, led by Todd Boehly, took over the club in 2022 and voluntarily reported the historical breaches during an internal review. The Premier League cited the club’s cooperation as a key reason for avoiding harsher consequences, such as a points deduction.

The sanction serves as a reminder of the Premier League’s strict financial rules, while Chelsea, now under fresh ownership, looks to continue building its squad for the coming seasons.

Player of the Month contenders

The January Player of the Month race is packed with standout individual performances from across the league:

Brighton midfielder Yasin Ayari kicks off the list after a quietly impressive month. The 22-year-old has already surpassed last season’s goal and assist numbers, registering two goals and two assists in four January appearances.

At Manchester United, Patrick Dorgu caught the eye during a flawless month under interim boss Michael Carrick. Deployed high up the pitch, the winger found the net against Arsenal and Manchester City, while also providing an assist during Darren Fletcher’s brief spell in charge.

Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández delivered when it mattered most, scoring late winners against Manchester City and West Ham. His January return of three goals and one assist under Liam Rosenior highlighted his growing leadership role in midfield.

West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville rediscovered his scoring touch after a long drought. Having gone without a league goal since October 2024, the Dutchman struck in three consecutive matches against Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, and Sunderland.

Brentford striker Igor Thiago is chasing history, hoping to become the first player to win the award twice this season. He enjoyed a prolific month, scoring five goals, including a hat-trick against Everton and a brace against Sunderland.

Harry Wilson earns back-to-back nominations after another productive spell for Fulham. With goals against Chelsea, Brighton and Liverpool, the Welshman continues to push Marco Silva’s side toward European contention as his contract situation draws attention.

Completing the list is Florian Wirtz, who receives his first nomination since joining Liverpool. The German midfielder contributed three goals and one assist, standing out during a difficult month in which the Reds managed just one win from six league games.

Manager of the Month contenders

The managerial shortlist reflects dramatic turnarounds and impressive short-term impacts:

Michael Carrick (Manchester United)

Sean Dyche (Nottingham Forest)

Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth)

Liam Rosenior (Chelsea)

United interim boss Michael Carrick makes an immediate impression, guiding the Red Devils to back-to-back wins over Manchester City and Arsenal in his brief January spell.

At Nottingham Forest, Sean Dyche steadied the ship after a worrying run of four straight defeats. His side responded with two wins and a draw, suffering just one loss against Aston Villa.

Andoni Iraola also turned Bournemouth’s fortunes around. After enduring an 11-match winless run, the Cherries sparked into life with a dramatic 3–2 victory over Tottenham, followed by further wins against Liverpool and Wolves.

Chelsea’s Liam Rosenior rounds off the list after a dream start to his Premier League tenure. Victories over Brentford, Crystal Palace, and West Ham made him only the fourth English manager to win his first three league games.

With new names dominating both shortlists, January’s awards promise fresh winners and plenty of debate among fans before the final verdict is announced.

As usual, the draw has delivered a familiar mix of giant clashes, tricky away trips, and classic cup narratives. Arsenal and Chelsea were both handed ties against Football League opposition, while Liverpool could be set for a heavyweight Premier League showdown with Brighton & Hove Albion, but only if they first navigate their third-round encounter with Barnsley on Monday night.

Arsenal had to dig deep themselves in the previous round, surviving a stern test from Championship side Portsmouth before sealing progression. Their reward is a meeting with Wigan Athletic, the 2013 FA Cup winners who know all too well how to spring surprises in this competition.

Chelsea, meanwhile, began life under Liam Rosenior in emphatic fashion with a commanding win over Charlton Athletic. Fate then added an interesting twist, pairing the Blues with Hull City, Rosenior’s former club.

The headline fairy tale from the third round belonged to Macclesfield. The sixth-tier side—only purchased off Rightmove in 2020, produced one of the shocks of the season by convincingly dumping out defending champions Crystal Palace. Their reward? Another crack at top-flight opposition, this time against Brentford, as their remarkable cup journey continues.

Not everyone enjoyed a smooth passage. Manchester United were among the biggest names to exit the competition, falling to Brighton in a bruising third-round defeat at Old Trafford. Brighton’s prize for that upset is a fourth-round tie against either Liverpool or Barnsley, setting up the possibility of another major scalp.

Elsewhere, there are several eye-catching fixtures across the draw, with Premier League sides facing stern tests and lower-league teams dreaming of another famous night.

2025–26 FA Cup Fourth Round Draw

Liverpool or Barnsley vs Brighton & Hove Albion

Stoke City vs Fulham

Oxford United vs Sunderland

Southampton vs Leicester City

Wrexham vs Ipswich Town

Arsenal vs Wigan Athletic

Hull City vs Chelsea

Burton Albion vs West Ham United

Burnley vs Mansfield Town

Norwich City vs West Bromwich Albion

Port Vale vs Bristol City

Aston Villa vs Newcastle

Manchester City vs Salford or Swindon

Macclesfield vs Brentford

Birmingham City vs Leeds United

With giant-killings already setting the tone and plenty of intriguing storylines still unfolding, the fourth round promises more drama, the kind only the FA Cup can deliver.

Enzo Maresca has finally spoken out following his sudden exit from Chelsea, offering a measured and dignified farewell just hours after his replacement, Liam Rosenior, was officially announced.

Despite leading the club to Club World Cup glory, the Italian coach was unceremoniously shown the door. Yet, Maresca insists he departs with “inner peace,” proud of having restored the Blues to their deserved standing amid turbulent times.

The 45-year-old took to social media on Tuesday to address supporters, choosing composure over airing grievances after reports of strained relations with the club’s hierarchy. His statement came shortly after Clearlake Capital-backed Chelsea confirmed Rosenior—formerly of Hull City and Strasbourg—as the new head coach, a move that has divided opinion among the fanbase.

Quoting Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Scout movement, Maresca set the tone for his farewell:

“LEAVE THIS WORLD A LITTLE BETTER THAN YOU FOUND IT.”

He reflected on the journey he embarked on in the summer of 2024, beginning with the preliminary rounds of the Conference League, and emphasised the pride he takes in what he achieved:

“My journey with Chelsea began with the preliminary rounds of the Conference League. I leave with the inner peace of leaving a prestigious club like Chelsea where it deserves to be.”

Enzo Maresca’s departure has shocked football observers across Europe, not least because of the tangible silverware he brought to Stamford Bridge during a turbulent tenure.

While friction over transfer policy and a dip in domestic results reportedly contributed to his dismissal, his record remains impressive: Champions League qualification, a Conference League title, and the pinnacle of the Club World Cup.

He paid tribute to the fans who supported him throughout his 18-month spell:

“I want to thank all the Chelsea fans for their support over the last 18 months. Support that was crucial to achieving Champions League qualification, winning the Conference League, and winning the Club World Cup. Victories that I will always hold in my heart!”

The Club World Cup victory, in particular, stands out as a highlight of Maresca’s reign. Under his guidance, Chelsea navigated a demanding tournament in the United States to be crowned world champions—a triumph that promised stability and progress.

Yet, barely six months later, he finds himself clearing out his office at Cobham, a casualty of the club’s relentless pursuit of perfection and control.

In his farewell, Maresca chose to focus on legacy and achievement, leaving behind a blueprint of success while stepping away with dignity.

Liam Rosenior has confirmed that he is on his way to becoming Chelsea’s new manager, bringing an end to days of speculation surrounding his future.

The announcement came dramatically at an unexpected press conference in France on Tuesday morning, where the Strasbourg boss openly admitted that a move to West London is now imminent.

Liam Rosenior Set to Become New Chelsea Manager

Just days earlier, Rosenior had played down talk of a possible exit from Strasbourg. But behind the scenes, events were moving quickly. The 41-year-old flew into London on Sunday and spent Monday deep in discussions with Chelsea’s hierarchy, following the departure of Enzo Maresca.

Addressing French reporters, Rosenior revealed how rapidly the situation unfolded.

He said:

“On Saturday, I didn’t know what was going to happen. What has happened since is that I have been allowed to speak with one of the biggest clubs in the world. Now, on this day, it looks like I’m going to be the next manager of that football club.

“This opportunity for me is something that I cannot turn down in my life right now. They have an incredible squad, an incredible fanbase and they are Club World Cup champions.

“I haven’t signed yet, I’ve agreed verbally with Chelsea. Everything is agreed, it will probably go through in the next few hours. I’m here because I care about this club and I thought it was important to answer your questions before I go on with the next stage of my career.”

If final paperwork is completed as expected, Rosenior’s first match in charge of Chelsea could come as early as Saturday, when the Blues face Charlton in the FA Cup. In the meantime, caretaker boss Calum MacFarlane is set to oversee Wednesday’s West London derby against Fulham.

Rosenior arrives at Stamford Bridge with just three years of managerial experience. He previously spent two seasons at Hull City before taking over at Ligue 1 side Strasbourg in 2024, making his rise to one of Europe’s biggest clubs a remarkable leap.

Emotion was clearly visible as he spoke about leaving France and closing a chapter of his career.

He added:

“Mixed emotions. Firstly so excited about the future, I cannot lie, my whole life I’ve worked to be a coach. To be presented this opportunity to manage a world class football club is something I’ve always dreamed of.

“I’m emotional now, this is the last day I will wake up as Strasbourg manager. This is football, you create connections with people.

“There’s many memories and good people I’m moving away from. I’m excited but also really appreciative of everything that’s happened here.”

With a verbal agreement already in place, all signs point to Rosenior beginning a new chapter at Chelsea within hours — one that could define the biggest step of his managerial career so far.

Chelsea have officially parted ways with head coach Enzo Maresca, bringing an abrupt end to a turbulent spell at Stamford Bridge despite the club still being firmly in the hunt for Champions League qualification.

Chelsea Sack Enzo Maresca Amid Turbulent Season

The decision follows Tuesday night’s 2–2 home draw against Bournemouth, a result that left the Blues with just one win in their last seven Premier League matches, intensifying pressure on the Italian tactician.

Although reports on New Year’s Eve suggested Maresca’s future hinged on an immediate upturn in results, sources indicate the call to dismiss him had already been made, with a serious behind-the-scenes fallout playing a decisive role.

In a statement confirming his exit, Chelsea said:

“Chelsea Football Club and Head Coach Enzo Maresca have parted company.

During his time at the Club, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Those achievements will remain an important part of the Club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions to the Club.

With key objectives still to play for across four competitions including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the Club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track.

We wish Enzo well for the future.”

Maresca’s relationship with the club hierarchy had appeared strained for weeks. Following Chelsea’s 2–0 win over Everton on December 13, the former Leicester City boss revealed that the build-up to the match had been “the worst since I joined the club,” citing a lack of support. While he later clarified that his comments were meant “in general,” speculation mounted that tensions existed internally.

Subsequent reports claimed there had been a two-week breakdown in communication between Maresca and Chelsea’s top decision-makers. Matters came to a head after the Bournemouth draw, during which Maresca was booed by sections of the home crowd. Assistant coach Willy Caballero handled post-match media duties, with claims that Maresca was feeling unwell.

Despite the poor run of form, Chelsea currently sit fifth in the Premier League, just three points off the top four, with Liverpool holding the final Champions League spot—ironically a side the Blues defeated earlier this season.

Maresca departs having delivered silverware, but amid growing unrest and fractured relationships, Chelsea’s hierarchy have opted for change as they attempt to salvage their season and return to Europe’s elite.

The semifinal match-ups were confirmed shortly after Newcastle sealed a dramatic quarterfinal victory over Fulham at St James’ Park. The Magpies needed a late moment of magic to progress, with academy graduate Lewis Miley firing home a stoppage-time winner to keep their title defence alive.

Chelsea were the first side to secure a semifinal ticket earlier in the week, edging past League One side Cardiff City with a 3–1 victory in south Wales. Despite dominating much of the contest, the Blues had to be patient before eventually pulling clear late in the game.

They were later joined by Manchester City, who brushed aside Brentford 2–0 on Wednesday night. A spectacular strike from Rayan Cherki set Pep Guardiola’s men on their way. City, who famously won the competition four consecutive times between the 2017–18 and 2020–21 seasons, are still chasing their first Carabao Cup triumph since that historic run ended.

Arsenal and Crystal Palace remain the only sides yet to complete their quarterfinal fixture, but both were included in the draw. Their tie, scheduled for the Emirates Stadium, was pushed back until next week due to fixture congestion.

In keeping with tradition, the Carabao Cup semifinals will be played over two legs, with the first matches taking place in January and the return fixtures set for February 2026.
