The single serves as a cornerstone for Patoranking’s 2026 album rollout, leaning into his World Best persona with intent and precision.

Patoranking Joins Forces With Buju Banton on “African Soldier”

Produced by the acclaimed Jazzwad, the track is a seamless fusion of Afro-dancehall and roots reggae, creating a sonic bridge between Nigeria and Jamaica that feels both timeless and timely.

Lyrically, African Soldier moves away from club-ready hits, delving instead into themes of liberation, Black excellence, and the resilience of the diaspora. Patoranking’s melodic grit complements Buju Banton’s gravelly, commanding delivery as they trade verses reflecting the struggles and triumphs of the modern soldier navigating a complex world.

The song is a celebration of empowerment, highlighting the global achievements of African and Caribbean communities.

The production features rich live instrumentation, from deep, walking basslines to sharp brass sections, evoking the spirit of 1990s dancehall while keeping a contemporary Afrobeats polish. By bringing Buju Banton into his musical universe,

Patoranking reinforces the cultural lineage connecting West African percussion with Caribbean rhythms. The result is a track that feels less like a fleeting hit and more like a lasting anthem for the continent.

Ultimately, African Soldier positions Patoranking as a true diplomat of sound. It’s a defining moment in his career, with his advocacy for African unity and pride articulated more clearly than ever.

For fans of conscious Afrobeats and authentic reggae, this collaboration is a masterclass in synergy, proving that when the Gargamel and the Ebonyi King meet, the message carries as much weight as the beat itself.

The Nigerian DJ and producer has openly described the track, featuring reggae icon Buju Banton and American R&B star Summer Walker, as the greatest music he has ever made, a statement that speaks volumes about the depth behind the record.

DJ Spinall Calls “Struggles” the Most Important Song of His Career

At its core, Struggles is a reflection on life’s uneven terrain, the victories, the losses, and the quiet moments in between. Sonically, the song weaves together Afrobeat rhythms, soulful R&B textures, and the unmistakable heartbeat of reggae, creating a soundscape that feels both global and deeply human. For Spinall, that emotional balance is what makes the song hit differently.

The collaboration itself came together most unexpectedly. What began as a simple trip to Jamaica quickly transformed into a once-in-a-career moment. Spinall and his team found themselves at Buju Banton’s home, where vacation vibes gave way to creative chemistry. Before meeting,

Spinall had already shared a handful of instrumentals with the reggae legend. When Buju revealed that he had chosen one particular beat, the very same one Spinall believed in most, the moment felt like fate. As Spinall recalled, that instant alignment made everything clear: the song was meant to happen.

What followed was a record that many listeners now praise for its authenticity. Buju Banton’s presence anchors the song in true reggae tradition, while Summer Walker adds emotional softness and vulnerability.

Together, their voices elevate the message, turning Struggles into a conversation about resilience, survival, and personal growth—themes that often get lost in the rush for radio hits.

Featured on Spinall’s album ÈKÓ Groove, Struggles stands as a defining moment in his career. It captures his strength as a curator and cultural bridge-builder, someone able to blend worlds without diluting their essence. More than just a collaboration, the song is proof that when intention meets timing, music can become something timeless.

The 14-track project, now streaming on all major platforms, is a pulsating homage to Lagos, fusing Afrobeats with amapiano, reggae, and global sounds.

The buzz around Eko Groove began on August 9 when SPINALL teased fans with a cinematic trailer and striking cover art showcasing Lagos’ bustling streets and snippets from his worldwide tours.

Pre-release singles such as Early featuring Victony, and “Excited,” with Ami Faku, Heavy-K, and Niniola, heightened expectations. By August 14, when he revealed a heavyweight lineup including Wizkid, Summer Walker, and Buju Banton, anticipation had reached fever pitch.

Running at 48 minutes, the album opens with the title track, Eko Groove, featuring Ayinde Bakare, instantly setting a rhythmic Lagos-inspired tone. Other standout collaborations include Struggle with Summer Walker, Buju Banton, and Jaz Karis, which offer soulful introspection, while contributions from Wizkid, Niniola, and Teni highlight SPINALL’s seamless fusion of homegrown and international artistry.

With his hands firmly on the production, the album echoes both his Lagos heritage and the global influences from his tours since Top Boy (2023).

Born Oluseye Desmond Sodamola, SPINALL has risen from his 2015 debut, My Story, to become one of Africa’s foremost DJs, gracing iconic stages such as Coachella and Glastonbury. Beyond performing, his imprint, TheCAP Music—founded in 2014—has helped shape contemporary Nigerian soundscapes.

Eko Groove, recorded during his international shows, stands as both a love letter to Lagos and a bold statement of his mission to export Nigerian music worldwide.

Now available on DSPs, the album invites listeners to dance, reflect, and celebrate Lagos through SPINALL’s lens.

First teased through a striking visual trailer and distinctive album artwork, EKO GROOVE draws its heartbeat from the hustle, colour, and unfiltered spirit of Lagos — “Eko” in Yoruba — a city that continues to inspire Spinall’s global sound. According to the DJ, the album is a celebration of Nigerian creativity and an invitation for the world to dance to its rhythm.

Fans can stream EKO GROOVE across all major platforms when it officially drops on August 29.

Nigerian award-winning singer and songwriter Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, has responded to recent comments made by Jamaican reggae legend Buju Banton regarding Afrobeats.

In a thoughtful reply, the Grammy winner explained that Afrobeats, like any other genre, serves a specific purpose for its originators—Nigerians. Tems emphasized that Afrobeats is a form of pop music designed to provide enjoyment, much like pop music from other regions.

She clarified, “Afrobeats is not Reggae, it’s not Rock—it’s for a certain purpose. Considering its origin in Nigeria, it’s meant for a specific experience, and you can join us in enjoying it.”

Buju Banton, during an appearance on the Drink Champs podcast, had described Afrobeats as a movement that fails to reflect the realities of its black audience in Africa. He also criticized Nigerian stars leading the genre’s global rise for not acknowledging the contributions of Jamaican artists.

Banton’s remarks sparked reactions from various artists, including Jamaican dancehall star Spice, who disagreed with his stance, noting that several Afrobeats artists like Burna Boy and Falz produce music with strong sociopolitical themes.

In the same interview, Tems addressed false rumors circulating about her being pregnant by American rapper Future, dismissing them as a wild fabrication. She called it an attempt by gossipers to create the most outrageous story possible.

Tems also discussed her recently released debut album, “Born In The Wild,” which features collaborations with Asake and J Cole, giving fans a deeper look into her artistic evolution.

Nigerian singer Tems has addressed the controversy surrounding Buju Banton’s criticism of the Afrobeats genre.

The Jamaican reggae icon sparked debate during his appearance on the “Drink Champs” podcast, where he accused Afrobeats of lacking depth, engaging in cultural appropriation, and failing to acknowledge the influence of reggae and dancehall.

In response, Tems, a prominent figure in the Afrobeats scene, offered a thoughtful perspective during an interview on the “Shopping The Sneakers” podcast. She remarked, “I understand where Buju Banton is coming from… Reggae is not Afrobeats, and Afrobeats in Nigeria is specifically for escapism, for vibe… that’s the purpose of Afrobeats.”

Tems‘ statement underscores the distinct cultural context and artistic intentions behind Afrobeats, which has surged in global popularity in recent years.

Her response has been perceived as a respectful but firm rebuttal to Buju Banton’s critique, highlighting the value and authenticity of Afrobeats as a genre in its own right.

The exchange between the two artists has also ignited a broader conversation about cultural exchange, appropriation, and the evolution of musical genres.

As Afrobeats continues to gain international recognition, artists and fans alike are engaging in discussions about its significance and its place within the global music landscape.
