Released on March 20, the album sold 641,000 equivalent units in its first week, marking the biggest opening for a group since Billboard began tracking streaming-adjusted sales in 2014.

Pure album sales reached an astonishing 532,000 copies, surpassing One Direction’s Midnight Memories (2013) as the highest first-week group sales in over a decade. Vinyl collectors contributed 208,000 units alone. The lead single SWIM also soared to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, giving BTS their seventh chart-topping hit in the U.S.

The comeback marks the end of a long period of national service for all seven members. Jin was the first to enlist in December 2022, followed by J-Hope in April 2023, with the remaining members RM, V, Jimin, Jungkook, and Suga completing their duties by December 2023. Suga, who served via social service after shoulder surgery, was the last discharged, returning to civilian life on June 21, 2025.

The album title, ARIRANG, reflects BTS’s connection to their homeland. Named after Korea’s most iconic traditional folk song, the title embodies themes of sorrow, longing, resilience, and joy—emotions the members experienced during their hiatus.

Group leader RM spoke candidly about the challenges of the comeback. “There are no references. We’re experimenting to rediscover what makes us BTS,” he said, adding, “One who wears the crown bears the crown.”

The reunion was a poignant moment for fans who had followed the staggered enlistments of the seven members over two years. RM reflected on the milestone, saying, “12 years as BTS has been a blessing. Evolution requires change, even without a blueprint.”

The comeback concert, streamed live on Netflix from Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square, drew roughly 260,000 viewers. BTS’s world tour kicks off April 9 in Korea, with the U.S. leg beginning April 25 in Tampa.

As part of its 10th-anniversary celebration, Apple Music has released a comprehensive list of its 500 most-streamed songs over the past decade, with British superstar Ed Sheeran claiming the No. 1 spot with his 2017 global smash, “Shape of You.”

The chart-topping single outperformed major hits like The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” and Drake’s “God’s Plan,” which came in at second and third place, respectively.

Since its release, Shape of You has set several streaming records, including the highest number of first-day plays on Apple Music, and it held firm atop the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 consecutive weeks. The song later earned Sheeran a Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance in 2018.

The top 10 positions on the list feature a mix of global pop and hip-hop anthems. Post Malone makes two strong showings with “Sunflower” (featuring Swae Lee) at No. 4 and “Rockstar” (featuring 21 Savage) at No. 5. Other notable entries include:

To commemorate the occasion, Apple Music curated a special 10th-anniversary playlist featuring all 500 songs and conducted an exclusive interview with Ed Sheeran. In a reflective chat with Zane Lowe, Sheeran said:

“No one can take away the song. I’ll be able to play it forever… I’m just grateful to have songs like that, where anywhere in the world, you can pick up a guitar and make someone happy.”

Park Jimin, a member of the vocal line for the biggest boy band BTS, has surpassed all previous records for Korean solo artists on the Billboard 200 and Hot 100 charts.

The Run Bts hitmaker became the first and only Korean solo artist to ever debut at number one on the Billboard hot 100 charts with his hit song ‘Like Crazy.‘

Jimin surpassed the old record set by another member of the group RM with his first project, “Indigo,” which debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, by selling over 100,000 units of his solo album “Face” in the US alone.

The debut position of Jimin’s “Like Crazy” on the Billboard 200 song chart was at number two (including and excluding the US).

Despite being on break, the members of K-pop powerhouse BTS are still making their marks on the charts as solo artists. Park Jimin now has the band’s largest individual Official Singles Chart achievement to date, with “Like Crazy” becoming the first-ever solo BTS Top 10 song.

Jimin of BTS is smashing it in the U.K., as “Like Crazy” (released by BigHit Entertainment) rockets to No. 8 on the charts.

“Like Crazy,” taken from his debut Album FACE, broke his previous record, achieved just one week earlier with “Set Me Free Pt. 2,” which peaked at No. 30, becoming the highest U.K. chart entry by a single member of BTS.

“Like Crazy” impacts the latest Official U.K. Singles Chart, released March 31 and led by Ed Sheeran’s “Eyes Closed,” which fires to No. 1 on debut.

The only other BTS band member to make the U.K. top 40 with a solo track before Jimin’s two most recent singles chart debuts were J-Hope, whose “One The Street” duet with J. Cole peaked at No. 37.

The seven-member K-pop supergroup, made up of J-Hope, Jin, Suga, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, has four U.K. Top 10 songs so far, with “Life Goes On,” “Butter,” and the Coldplay collaboration “My Universe” all reaching the No. 3 spot.

The boyband also has two U.K. No. 1 albums as a collective: 2019’s Map of the Soul – Persona and 2020’s Map of the Soul – 7.

He is the sixth member of the K-pop supergroup’s seven members to have a solo single that made the U.K. top 100. Previously, J-Hope’s “On The Street” and Jungkook’s “Stay Alive” (No. 89), Jin’s “The Astronaut” (No. 61), and RM’s “Indigo” (No. 45) influenced the Official U.K. Singles Chart.

With his debut solo single, “Like Crazy,” Jimin of K-pop behemoth BTS has topped the world’s largest music streaming service Spotify’s World Top 50 chart.

“Face,” the first single from his first official solo album, debuted at No. 1 on the daily worldwide chart on Sunday with over 6.01 million streams, only two days after debuting at No. 2 on the day of its release.

In Japan, “Face” topped the current Oricon weekly albums chart with 225,000 copies sold, making him the first solo artist to do so this year.

The six-track album also set the record for the biggest first-week sales by a soloist in Japan this year, his agency, BigHit Music said, quoting Oricon.

According to the Hanteo Chart, a local tracker of K-pop album sales, Jimin became the first K-pop soloist with an album selling over 1 million copies on the day of its release when “Face” sold 1,021,532 copies.

It also topped the iTunes’ top albums charts in 63 regions around the world, while its main single, “Like Crazy,” was the No. 1 song on the service’s top songs charts in 111 regions Saturday.

The top 20 global recording artists of the year were announced by the IFPI in an official post on February 22, 2023.

The Top 20 Global Recording Artists for 2022 have been revealed by the organization that represents the recorded music business globally, the IFPI. For the third time in the award’s ten-year history, Taylor Swift was named the 2022 Global Recording Artist of the Year by the IFPI.

The award is determined by how well an artist or group performed globally over the year across all of their music releases, both digital and physical. Taylor Swift has received more IFPI World Recording Artist Awards than any other artist during the course of the award’s ten-year history. She presently holds the distinction from 2014, 2019, and 2022.

After back-to-back victories in 2020 and 2021, BTS places second, marking their third consecutive year in the Top 3, while Drake places third, marking his sixth Top 3 appearance since the Chart’s inception.

There was no way Nigerians could have anticipated seeing a flashback photo of Tony Elemelu, the board chairman of UBA, posing with the well-known and multiple award-winning boy band BTS.

On Thursday, January 26, 2023, the business magnate turned to his social media platform to elaborate on what he thought of the group and why and how the photo was shot.

Tony Elumelu revealed that he met and photographed the brilliant group BTS in 2018 during the United Nations General Assembly.

BTS had given a speech at the General Assembly in 2018 in front of world leaders at the launch of Generation Unlimited which is an initiative according to the UN that:

will tackle the global education and training crisis currently holding back millions of young people and threatening progress and stability by focusing on three key areas of work: secondary-age education; skills for learning, employability and decent work; and empowerment.

This held true not only for American pop music, which dominated the world music scene, but also for other musical genres like Rock, Hip Hop, and R&B, all of which were made popular by American music.

What’s pleasantly surprising, however, is that while Africa has been making its musical presence known to the world, Korean culture and music have steadily permeated into the continent – and its popularity continues to grow.

According to Spotify’s head of music for Sub-Saharan Africa, Phiona Okumu “Surprisingly, there’s been a 93% year-on-year increase in K-pop streams in Sub-Saharan Africa in 2022, accounted for by over 3 billion hours of streaming. It’s clear from this data that K-pop is not just a passing phase, but has a devoted and growing African fandom.”

Some of the key markets contributing to this increase are Nigeria, where there was a 267% increase in K-pop streams, Ghana with 236% and Kenya with a 140% increase.

So what exactly is propelling this rising interest in K-pop on the continent?

Some, like National Geographic, attribute the global rise of K-pop to the pandemic, which inadvertently focused the world’s attention on this East Asian cultural powerhouse. Around the globe, millions made use of their time and binge watched K-dramas like Squid Game, at the same time discovering multiple facets of Korean culture.

While this may be equally true for the African continent, other factors like increased internet access might also have a hand to play. With a population which is young and online – it makes sense that Africa is a strong emerging market for K-pop which enjoys mass youth appeal. A recent survey which polled 400 000 BTS fans around the world, determined that approximately 50% of their fans are under the age of 18, with a further 42% aged 18-29. Spotify’s Wrapped data for Africa paints a similar picture – with a combined 88% of K-pop music streams coming from people under the age of 29.

“In an increasingly connected world, on-demand streaming services like Spotify have certainly made it easier than ever to tap into another country’s music. Streaming has become instrumental in not only enabling the discovery of African music abroad but also in exposing African listeners to new and unexpected sounds,” she elaborates.

What’s capturing the hearts of this new audience, however, is the diverse sounds that K-pop has to offer. Although called Korean pop music, K-pop actually ranges across a vast number of music genres such as Pop, Hip Hop, R&B, Rock, Jazz, Reggae, Disco, and even traditional and folk Korean musical stylings. K-pop is essentially not really a music genre, but simply music from Korean artists – known colloquially as idols.

Whether it is seen as adoption or appropriation, there is no denying the Hip Hop and R&B influences in K-Pop-genres which have historically had massive support across Africa. And increasingly, African inspiration is emerging in K-pop.

BTS, who occupies the top spot for K-pop artists streamed in Sub-Saharan Africa and dominates the list of most streamed tracks, covers nearly every music genre in their discography – including South African grown Gqom. The band’s hit IDOL, features Gqom-style beats while the video tips its hat to the continent in the band’s dance moves and their African print suits. Girl band BS (or Black Swan) made history in 2020 when they introduced the first ever African K-Pop idol, Senegalese model Fatou Samba.

On top of this range of musicality, K-pop idols are also known for their extremely tight and extravagant choreography, high-value stage and music video productions, and the distinctive style and “concept” of each K-pop group. Not to mention the polished good looks and fashion of these immensely talented artists.

“This year, K-pop showcased its staying power in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) with millions of streams in countries like South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria – the top three for K-pop consumption on the continent respectively. Other countries that made it into the top 10 K-pop markets in SSA included Mauritius, Ghana, Uganda, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia and Botswana,” Okumu says of the data uncovered about K-pop consumption on the continent.

“K-Pop stars have also increasingly targeted global audiences through collaborations with acts from the West. In Africa this appears to have real appeal – the number one streamed K-Pop track is My Universe, a collaboration between BTS and Coldplay, with the second spot occupied by Left and Right, another collab between Charlie Puth and Jung Kook (of BTS fame),” Okumu says.

Billboard has released the highest earning concerts for the year 2022 which saw Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles, BTS, Bad Bunny and others dominate.

This news comes in the wake of its annual roundup chart announcement.

On the list, major names in the entertainment industry made more than $20 million from a single concert venue.

Harry Styles leads the list with his Madison Garden show which earned over 63 Million dollars from ticket sales. His others shows (United Center, Chicago, Moody Austin, Texas and Kia Forum, Calif) made no 15, 20, 21 on the list also.

Ed Sheeran follows closely on the list with his Wembley Stadium show which made over 37 Million dollars in Ticket sales. He also appears on No 22 with his Etihad stadium show.

Other acts, such as Coldplay, Rolling Stone, Elton John, Daddy Yankee and others, also make the list as well.
