These Nigerian music groups caused a lot of heartbreaks for fans after they disbanded and went their separate way.

There was a time in the industry that music groups were dominating the industry and changing the landscape of the music scene.

However, as the music industry became to evolve so did personal interests causing a lot of groups to dissolve and go their separate ways.

We are unable to avoid recalling beloved musical bands whose dissolution crushed hearts across the nation.

Here are 10 musical groups—ranging from Mo’hits to TrybesMen—that we miss and would dearly like to see reunited:

Mo’hits

Nigeria lost one of the best music collectives in history in 2012 when co-founder and producer Don Jazzy announced their breakup on social media after nearly ten years in the business.

Everyone broke apart from the organisation, blaming each other and citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for its dissolution.

Fans will never again hear club bangers from the Don Jazzy, D’banj, Ikechukwu, Wandecoal, Kayswitch, and Dr. SID collective, who won their hearts with their outstanding performances.

They had some of the best songs ever, including You Bad, Booty Call, Pere, Be Close To You, and Ten Ten.

The group had a brief comeback when they performed together for the first time since the split on 27 December 2017 at Davido’s show tagged “30Billion Concert.”

Plantashun Boiz

Innocent Idibia (2Baba), Chibuzor Oji (Faze), and Ahmedu Augustine Obiano (Black Faze) formed Plantashun Boiz, a powerful trio in the music industry.

This R&B/Hip-hop boy band was one of the most well-known musical acts of the decade.

Three outstanding guys who emerged as the leading voices of the new school were introduced to a generation of young music enthusiasts through the songs they wrote, which mixed elements of pop, rap, and reggae.

The band released three albums together and is well known for songs like Say You Believe Me, You and I, and Plantashun Boiz.

Their songs sold out like wildfire. They topped charts across the country, diverted attention from the dominant old genres, and used the Nigerian pop sound to get unprecedented amounts of airplay on radio stations, practically serving as a model for how to make the music as commercially sustainable as possible.

However, the trio disbanded in 2004 when 2Baba decided to pursue a solo career. His iconic solo debut album, Face2Face, featured the hit song African Queen, which served as the catalyst for his rise to prominence as one of Africa’s top entertainers.

While Black faze switched from R&B to reggae music, which also helped him get a lot of street respect and love, Faze released his debut album, Faze Alone, which went on to sell 1.2 million copies.

Regardless of their individual success, we would still love to see them together.

Styl-Plus

Shifi Emoefe, Tunde Akinsanmi, Yemi Akinwonmi, and Lanre Faneyi were the founding members; STYL is an acronym for their first names.

When Lanre Faneyi passed away in 1998, Zeal Onyechem took over and altered the group’s name to Styl-Plus, with the “Plus” signifying the new member.

However, Yemi Akinwonmi quit the group in 2002, leaving Shifi Omoefe, Zeal Onyecheme, and Tunde Akinsanmi as a trio.

They were responsible for the number-one songs Olufunmi, Runaway, Iya Basira, and Imagine dat.

Styl-plus officially split up soon after the release of the song “Four years dun waka,” and Tunde went on to seek a solo career.

As die-hard fans, we still long for the musical group that stole our hearts in the early 2000s.

Remedies

The Remedies, which consisted of Tony Tetuila, Eedris Abdulkareem, and Eddie Remedy, were extremely well-known in the 1990s thanks to their popular songs Shakomo and Omoge.

They even had a contract with Kennis Music, the largest record company in Nigeria at the time.

Due to insurmountable differences, the group broke up.

While Eedris Abdulkareem continued to be in the public eye with songs like Oko Omoge, Mr Lecturer, and Jaga Jaga, Tetuila rose to fame with songs like Omode Meta, Morning Time, Hit My Car, and My Heart Go Jigijigi. Eddy Remedy has been out in the public eye for some time.

Maintain

Popularly referred to as “The Boys from Ibadan,” Olu Maintain, Tolu, and Big Bamo dominated the Nigerian music industry with hits like “I Catch Cold” and “Nibo la wa gbe lo.”

Olu Maintain went on to release Yahooze after the trio disbanded in 2005. While Tolu concentrated on his work as a banker, Big Bamo released Fi jo ko wo je and Popotiti.

TrybesMen

They are sometimes referred to as Da Trybe and are frequently referred to as “one of the pioneers of hip hop in Nigeria.”

eLDee, Kaboom, and Freestyle—the group’s founding three members—met in 1994. In 1999, they published L.A.G Style Volume 1, which received positive reviews. Trybal Marks and Shake Bodi were among their hits.

After the group disbanded, eLDee and Freestyle each released a solo album.

Infinity

They were a gospel group that rose to fame in 2007 after releasing the successful singles Olori Oko, Aye Ole, and Only Praise.

They only released one album after the departure of Kehinde Akinbode, now known as K’ore, who later admitted that members of the gospel group were not practising what they preached.

Following his departure, the group of four men made an effort to remain together, but they were not as noticeable as they had been.

The three (3) notable generations of afrobeat are The Fela’s, The D’banj/2Baba/Psquare’s and The Wizkid/Davido/Burna Boy’s generations.

Each of the generations plays important role in the growth and globalization of the afrobeat movement, from the pioneer to the record-breaking new generations.

The Origin

Afrobeat was originated in Ghana in the early 1920s Before Nigeria joined the wave in the late 1960s, pioneered by Fela Kuti who explored different fashionable music at the time, he was at the forefront of the genre, popularizing the style both within and outside Nigeria.

This generation is the birth of the movement, where it all started from ideas, talent, hard work and destiny.

Fela Kuti recorded about 29 albums from 1969 to the 90s with sold-out concerts in the US, UK, and other parts of the world.

In the early 90s to Mid 90s Reggae music Infiltrated the Nigeria music scene, the genre which is associated with Jamaicans was acquired by the likes of Majek Fashek, transforming into Ragga/dancehall music, becoming a force in places like Ajegunle in Lagos, moulding the sounds as delivered by the likes of Daddy Showkey, Nico Gravity, Daddy Fresh, African China and others.

Afrobeat was pushed by Femi Kuti, Seun Kuti in the 90s, a bit of juju music led by  I.K Dairo and J.O Araba even though it has been in existence pre-independence

In the late 90s to early 2000s Kennis Music created a wave that falls under afrobeat, it includes, R&B, Hip-hop, and Pop music, artists in this era are Styl Plus, OJB Jezreel, 2 shots, Eedris Abdulkareem, Jazzman Olofin, Paul Play, etc.

2000s-2010s

This generation started in the 2000s-2010s, it comprises other afrobeat artists which include, 9ice, Faze, Black Faze, Banky W, Timaya, and others.

D’banj, 2Baba and P-Square were the key players of the era based on statistics (career records, achievements and impacts).

2Baba released an “International Edition” of his third studio album ‘The Unstoppable International’ making him the first Nigerian artist to have a proper international rated and priced album.

Dbanj was the first afrobeat artiste to create a relative connection to an International mainstream act in 2011, after signing a contract deal as an artist to ‘Good Music record label‘ founded by Kanye West.

P-Square collaborated with T.I, and Rick Ross In 2012 and in 2013 they bag their first international nomination at Soul Train Music Awards for Best International Performance.

The Millenial

This generation started in the 2010s to Present, it consists of other afrobeat artistes which include, Tekno, Tiwa Savage, Runtown, Yemi Alade, Kizz Daniel, Mr Eazi, Olamide, Phyno and others

Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy were the key players of the era based on statistics (career records, achievements and impacts)

Drake was the first mainstream artiste who joined the afrobeat wave, jumping on Wizkid‘s Ojuelegba song and from then birthed his hit single ‘One Dance‘ featuring Wizkid and a British singer Kyla, the first song introducing afrobeat to wider new generations around the world, as it is a combination of dancehall, afro beats, and Pop.

Davido signed a record deal with Sony’s RCA Records in 2016, becoming the first Nigerian New generational afrobeat artiste to officially sign to an international label.

Davido released a single titled ‘Fall’ on June 2, 2017, it became the longest-charting Nigeria pop song in US Billboard Hot R&B Songs history.

in 2019 and 2020, Burna Boy’s studio albums were nominated in the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards and 63rd Annual Grammy Awards (with African Giant & Twice as Tall) respectively, making him the first Nigerian to be nominated in two consecutive years at the Grammys.

In the early 2000s, the ‘album’ rea was dominant with Nigerian artists releasing albums and in 2006 it became more prominent.

2006 was a pivotal event in Nigerian music. By this time, the sound of Nigerian music had established itself. This period was also an ‘album’ era where artists released albums compared to dropping singles.

In that same year, Nigeria Music Industry’s biggest award show, “The Headies” was launched but under the name “The Hip Hop World Award.”

Fifteen years down the line, the Nigerian Music Industry has evolved in terms of sounds and production, a new crop of artists have arisen with the global music scene now accomodating Afrobeat.

Here are Top Classic Nigerian Albums released in 2006;

• Rundown Funk U Up- D’banj

RunDown Funk U Up is D’banj’s second studio album released in 2006 under the defunct Mo’ Hits Records which as of then was newly established.

Don Jazzy produced the 17-tracks album, which featured songs such as “Why Me,” “Do You Like the Koko? (Tongolo Remix),” “Mo Bo Lowo Won” and “Run Down (Funk U Up),” among others.

“Why Me” which is the lead single from this album won the “Song of the Year” award at the 2007 Hip Hop World Awards. It also won the “Hottest Single of the Year” award at the 2007 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.

While one might argue that D’banj’s 2008 “The Entertainer” was his best project, “Rundown Funk U Up” was where D’banj began perfecting his unique brand of Afropop that would solidify his presence as one of Nigeria’s best pop musicians

• Independent- Faze

Faze was one of the trios of the defunct Nigerian hip hop group Plantashun Boyz, along with BlackFace Naija and 2Baba who was formerly known as 2Face Idibia.

After leaving the group, he released his debut solo album, “Faze alone” in 2004 which sold about 3 million copies.

On October 5, 2006, Faze dropped his second studio album, Independent.

The album’s production was similar to the first because he used some of the same producers who worked on the first, such as OJB Jezreel, Cobhams Asuquo, and Paul Runz. ID Cabasa, Spankie, Mr Daz, and Ja mix were among the producers featured on the album, adding to Faze’s list of collaborators.

The 15-tracks album contained hit songs like ‘Kolomental’ ‘Kpo Di Kpo’, Need Somebody,’ ‘Loving You Everyday‘ and ‘Tattoo Girl‘.

The album was a fusion of R’n’B and Dancehall/Reggae and sold over 7 million copies.

• Grass to Grace- 2Baba (Formerly known as 2Face Idibia)

Just Like Faze, 2baba was a member of Plantashun Boyz. After he left the group, he got signed to Kennis Music where he released his debut album, “Face 2 Face.”

Grass 2 Grace was 2baba’s second solo album. The album won him numerous awards, including a MOBO award in 2007.

The 13-tracks album has hits like “See me so”, “True love”, “If love is a crime“, “For Instance“, etc. The album was a perfection of the evolved 2Baba.

• Expressions- Styl-Plus

Styl-Plus (originally STYL) is a Nigerian R&B and pop musical group made up of Shifi Emoefe, Tunde Akinsanmi and Zeal Onyecheme.

In February 2006, they released their highly anticipated 11 track debut album “Expressions“.

They had a spectacular, star-studded album launch in Abuja and Lagos which was rumoured to have cost over N10 million making it the most expensive album launch in Nigerian history.

“Imagine That” is the lead single from the album. It has also been a massive chart topper and has been used in numerous shows, including the pioneer edition of Big Brother Nigeria.

The album also had hits like “Iya Basira”, “Drives Me Crazy”, Olofunmi” “Run Away“, e.t.c. “Expressions” is still considered as one of Nigeria best Afro R’n’B albums to date.

• After The Storm- Weird MC

Weird MC is a Nigerian-British rapper, songwriter, and producer known for her English/Yoruba lyrics.

Weird MC who is also known as Shola Idowu and The Rappatainer is seen as one of Africa’s best female emcees.

She started her music career in the UK and In 1996, Idowu returned to Nigeria, where she released the album Simply Weird, a mix of American hip hop and afrobeat, which included the self-produced video single “Allen Avenue,” making her the first Nigerian artist to do so.

In 2006, she released her second album, After Da Storm. Hip hop had established itself as a dominant type of music in Nigeria at this time, and the Don Jazzy and JJC-produced single “Ijoya” was a huge hit, earning her an AMEN award for Most Pop Song, and a Channel O Music Video Award for Best Special Effect.

2006 was a defining moment in Nigerian music history. The sound of Nigerian music was becoming established by this time. In comparison to previous years, when international music dominated the airwaves, Nigerian songs began to receive more airplay on local radio.

Music quality improved significantly as artists gained access to better-recording equipment and studios

The establishment of the American Entertainment Station, MTV Base Africa in Nigeria the previous year also prompted the need for Nigerian acts to use music videos as promotional tools.

As MTV was available in most of Africa, the modern Nigerian pop scene began to receive international attention for the first time. These videos then spread across the continent, ushering in the Nigerian music scene as the dominant force in Africa that it is today!

This year also marked the dominance of two major record labels – Storm records and Mo’hits on the scene. The success of these labels created a record label boom within the industry in the subsequent years

Here are Classic Nigerian Songs that were released in 2006 and turns 15 years in 2021;

Faze- Kolemental

Kolomental was the lead single from Faze’s sophomore album, Independent, which was released in 2006 and went on to become one of the year’s biggest Nigerian songs in 2007.

The banging track had a special frenzy to it, as the song title already suggests. It sparked a particular craze, fueled by the song’s musical instrumentation as well as Faze’s uniquely superb vocals.

Independent is also the R&B superstar’s best-selling album (in his career) and the biggest (most-sold) album of 2007. Faze was also a member of the now-disbanded Plantashun Boiz trio, which also included 2face Idibia now known as 2baba and Blackface.

Imagine that- Styl-Plus

In February 2006, Styl-Plus made up of Shifi Emoefe, Tunde Akinsanmi and Zeal Onyecheme released their highly anticipated 11 track debut album “Expressions“.

Angel of My Life- Paul Play Dairo

Paul Play Dairo is the son of the late Nigerian singer I.K. Dairo. He signed with Kennis Music in 1999 after his music group broke up.

In 2006, he released the R’n’B tune, “Angel of My Life“. The song was a hit solidifying Paul Play’s place as one of the biggest Afro-R’n’B artists as of then. In 2020, he released a remix of the song with Runtown.

Adara- Sasha P

Sasha P (formerly Sasha) was once the hottest femcee in the game, having given herself the self-serving title of “the first lady of Nigerian Hip-Hop.” The Omo Ibadan rose to prominence at a time when there were few Nigerian female hip-hop artists.

“Adara” was her biggest song, featured on her debut album, First Lady, released in 2006, and later released as a stand-alone single in 2008. In 2009, the song earned her a UK-based award for Best Female Artiste.

Although she has largely abandoned music in recent years, she devotes the majority of her time and energy to the fashion industry and other humanitarian causes.

For Instance- 2Baba

“For Instance” is a single from 2Baba (Formerly Known as 2face Idibia)‘s second solo album, Grass 2 Grace, released in 2006. In its first week of release, the album sold over a million copies and earned him numerous awards, including the MOBO Award in 2007.

Aside from the magnetizing beat, the lyrics are socio-political in nature calling out corrupt leaders who abuse the trust of the people who put them in power.

Olori Oko- Infinity

Infinity was a popular Gospel Nigerian group made up of Kehinde Akinbode, Joe Okougbo, David Thomas, Samson Nnogo and Sunny Steve. In 2006, they released their album, “Olori Oko‘ with the lead single of the same name to massive success.

“Olori Oko” was not just an anthem in churches but in schools, events, name it. It was a popular choreography tune used by children.

Swo- Marvellous Benjy

There are Nigerian songs that have helped create or propagate dance routine and Marvellous Benjy’s “Swo” is one of those songs. Released in 2006, it was off his “Take Control” album. It is to date Marvellous Benjy’s biggest song.

Why- D’banj

D’banj is a Nigerian musician who uses a fusion of Afrobeat and Afropop to bring his music to life and is considered one of the Nigerian Music Industry’s influential artists.

In 2006, he released his RunDown Funk U Up Album and one of the biggest hits from the song is the uptempo song “Why Me” which was a big hit.

Ijoya- Weird MC

Ijoya is from Weird MC’s second album, After Da Storm, released in 2006. The single “Ijoya,” produced by Don Jazzy and JJC, was a huge success, earning her an AMEN award for Most Pop Song and a Channel O Music Video Award for Best Special Effect.

Kerewa- Zule Zoo

Zule Zoo was a music duo consisting of Ibrahim Alhassan and Mike from Benue state. Their biggest git was ‘Kerewa” which had a groovy and undulating beat that blinded people from the heavily sexual and controversial lyrics.

“Kerewa” in itself is a slang for s*xual intercourse and has two different theories over what the theme of the song is.

One school of thought sees the song from the perspective of a child reporting his mother’s adultery. Another school of thought believes what the child was in fact r*pe taking place.

The Music Groups/Boy Bands movement was so successful during that period that most Nigerian Artists wanted to be in a band.

Music groups were like the mecca of sorts where most artists sharpen their craft to become the most revered musicians. In the era where collective glory was a valued achievement, it was trendy to be a member of a music group.

Their achievements are groundbreaking. They individually at different times shaped pop culture narratives. Their songs made us fall in love. Through fashion and lifestyle, they made us felt witty like our foreign hip-hop and pop music heroes.

In this article, I will try to go down memory lane to talk about music groups that dominated the Nigerian music industry.

Junior and Pretty

JUNIOR & PRETTY are credited as the pioneer godfathers of Nigerian hip hop music. When everybody was trying to mimic the American rappers, they came out with their unique rap style which is comic in nature and uses local pidgin English as the language of delivery. This unique blend took the country by storm, and the rest is history.

Waltzing into our hearts with a super-detailed account of their hot-pursuit of Bolanle, Junior and Pretty dominated the 90s music scene.

Remedies

ANOTHER boy band that rocked the late 90s and early 2000s were Remedies, made up of Eddy Remedy, Tony Tetuila and Eedris Abdulkareem.

The group was a force to reckon with, giving the RnB and Rap genre a new face. The group had songs that enjoyed airplay. They went separate ways to start as solo artistes which at a point were successful.

Trybesmen

Trybesmen (also known as Da Trybe) comprising of three original members, known as Eldee, Kaboom and Freestyle.

Their first album, L.A.G Style Volume 1., was released in 1999 to positive reviews. Their hits included “Plenty Nonsense” and “Shake Bodi”.

Maintain

Before Olu Maintain dished out his smash hit, ‘yahooze’ and danced with former US Secretary of State Colin Powell, he was one of a duo known as Maintain.

The group was made up of Tolu Oguniyi (Tolu Maintain), Olumide Adegbolu (Olu Maintain) and they had a frequent collaborator and label owner in Adeboye Bammeke aka Big Bamo.

Their music was mostly famous for its often humorous, politically underlined lyricism.  They became household names in Nigeria after the success of their debut album Ni bo la wa gbe lo in 1999.

The group’s rise to fame was mostly based off samples and covers of other  international pop songs. Particularly, one of their biggest hits till date I Catch Cold, was a parody of Ludacris’ and Nate  Dogg’s 2001 smash hit Area Codes.

Plantanshaun Boiz

ANOTHER powerful group that rocked the Nigerian music industry between the late 90s to early 2000s is Plantashun Boiz which was made up of the trio, Innocent Idibia, aka 2Baba, Chibuzor Orji, aka Faze and as well as Ahmedu Augustine Obiabo better known as Black Face.

During their days as a group, they had several hits but things came to a head when some members of the group decided to pursue individual careers in 2003.

After their separation, 2Baba got signed under Kennis Music where he dropped his hit song African Queen which catapulted him to stardom and made him a force to reckon with in Africa and beyond. Faze on the other hand also made his solo debut with Faze Alone as his first single as a solo artist. Black Face as well dropped a couple of singles.

Within a space of about two years, the three of them had songs and albums doing well out in the industry and radio stations. 2Baba had ‘Face to Face’, Faze had ‘Faze Alone’ while Black Face had ‘Ghetto Child’. The albums did quite well in the industry.

Styl Plus

Described as the Nigerian version of the American RnB group, Boys 2 Men due to their genre of songs, Styl Plus were an R’n’B group that was consisted of Shifi, Tunde and Zeal.

Style Plus gained stardom with their hit single Olufunmi in 2007 and they all enjoyed their time giving hit songs back-to-back.

However, Tunde left style plus a few years after to pursue a solo career and since then, not much has been heard from him. The reason for his departure is still unknown.

Shifi and Zeal also haven’t dropped many songs since, leaving their fans to assume that they are done with music and facing other endeavours.

In the early 90s to Mid 90s Reggae music Infiltrated the Nigeria music scene, the genre which is associated with Jamaicans was acquired by the likes of Majek Fashek, transforming into Ragga/dancehall music, becoming a force in places like Ajegunle in Lagos, moulding the sounds as delivered by the likes of Daddy Showkey, Nico Gravity, Daddy Fresh, African China and others.

Afrobeat was pushed by Femi Kuti, Seun Kuti in the 90s, a bit of juju music led by  I.K Dairo and J.O Araba even though it has been in existence pre-independence

In the late 90s to early 2000s Kennis Music created a wave that falls under afrobeat, it includes, R&B, Hip-hop, and Pop music, artistes in this era are Styl Plus, OJB Jezreel, 2 shots, Eedris Abdulkareem, Jazzman Olofin, Paul Play, etc.

The D’banj/2Baba/P-Square’s

This generation started in the 2000s-2010s, it comprises other afrobeat artistes which include, 9ice, Faze, Black Faze, Banky W, Timaya, and others.

D’banj, 2Baba and P-Square were the key players of the era based on statistics (career records, achievements and impacts).

2Baba released an “International Edition” of his third studio album ‘The Unstoppable International’ making him the first Nigerian artist to have a proper international rated and priced album.

Dbanj was the first afrobeat artiste to create a relative connection to an International mainstream act in 2011, after signing a contract deal as an artist to ‘Good Music record label‘ founded by Kanye West.

P-Square collaborated with T.I, and Rick Ross In 2012 and in 2013 they bag their first international nomination at Soul Train Music Awards for Best International Performance.

The Wizkid/Davido/Burna Boy’s

This generation started in the 2010s to Present, it consists of other afrobeat artistes which include, Tekno, Tiwa Savage, Runtown, Yemi Alade, Kizz Daniel, Mr Eazi, Olamide, Phyno and others

Drake was the first mainstream artiste who joined the afrobeat wave, jumping on Wizkid‘s Ojuelegba song and from then birthed his hit single ‘One Dance‘ featuring Wizkid and a British singer Kyla, the first song introducing afrobeat to wider new generations around the world, as it is a combination of dancehall, afro beats, and Pop.

Davido signed a record deal with Sony’s RCA Records in 2016, becoming the first Nigerian New generational afrobeat artiste to officially signed to an international label.

Davido released a single titled ‘Fall’ on June 2, 2017, it became the longest-charting Nigeria pop song in US Billboard Hot R&B Songs history.

in 2019 and 2020, Burna Boy’s studio albums were nominated in the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards and 63rd Annual Grammy Awards (with African Giant & Twice as Tall) respectively, making him the first Nigerian to be nominated in two consecutive years at the Grammys.
