Ugandan music star Bebe Cool has distanced himself from the controversial 2020 arrest of Nigerian artists Tems and Omah Lay, stating in a recent interview on the Afrobeats Podcast that he played no role in the incident.

Fans will recall that both Nigerian singers were arrested in Uganda and charged with violating COVID-19 protocols after performing at a concert in Kampala.

The sight of the duo in handcuffs sparked widespread outrage among Nigerians, with many accusing Bebe Cool of orchestrating their arrest. Their anger stemmed from the Ugandan star’s earlier protest against Nigerian artists being invited to perform while local musicians were allegedly sidelined.

However, Bebe Cool insists that the internet-fueled a false narrative. According to him, he took immediate steps to intervene upon learning about the arrest.

“I went to the police station to find out what was happening. I spoke to one of the managers and the head of the police station and asked him why he went to arrest the artist,” he explained.

He further clarified that he informed the authorities that the COVID-19 violation was the fault of the event promoters, not the artists, as they were unaware of the 200-person restriction.

Bebe Cool claimed that a promoter wrongfully linked him to the arrest simply because he had earlier joined other Ugandan artists in demanding equal performance opportunities.

The Ugandan singer also disclosed that Nigerian superstars Davido and Wizkid reached out to him, demanding an explanation for the incident.

He stated that he wrote to the prosecutor’s office to secure their release but faced bureaucratic hurdles. However, after engaging with top government officials, he was eventually able to help them regain their freedom.

The incident, which Tems later described as traumatizing, led to widespread condemnation from Nigerian artists who took to social media to demand their colleagues’ release.

In the aftermath of the ordeal, Omah Lay channelled his emotions into music, releasing ‘Goldy,’ which went on to become a smash hit.

The “Activate” hitmaker, who was nominated among fellow artists A2 Di Fulani (Gambia), Bebe Cool (Uganda), EXQ ft. Tock Vibes (Zimbabwe), Mykey Shewa (Ethiopia), Nutty O (Zimbabwe), Patoranking (Nigeria), Rosa Ree (Tanzania), Ruger (Nigeria), and Shatta Wale (Ghana), won the coveted trophy which was held in Lagos on November 21, 2021, at the Convention centre Eko Hotel and Suites.

Stonebwoy becomes the first African Reggae and Dancehall artiste to win the “Best Artiste, Duo or Group, African Reggae, Ragga & Dancehall” category for the fourth time, and three times in a row, adding to his outstanding and enviable collection of awards (2015, 2018, 2019, 2021).

Due to the emergence of COVD-19, the 2020 edition has been cancelled.

Recall, The Ghanaian star sings ragga in Jamaican Patois (Patwa or Patwah) and is known as a “multifaceted musician” because of his diverse musical styles. He got several honours and nominations in 2015, including “Artist of the Year” and “Album of the Year.”

His sophomore album Necessary Evil has received three Ghana Music Awards out of six nominations.

The My Name crooner was named Artist of the Year at the 2015 Ghana Music Awards and Best International Act: Africa at the 2015 BET Awards.

He has also been awarded two Billboard awards. He’s been dubbed the “King of African Reggae and Dancehall Artists.”

One of the talented Nigerian singers, Tems has blown the trumpet on social media has she called out Ugandan singer, Bebe Cool for planning her arrest and her fellow singer, Omah Lay in Uganda.

After their (Omah Lay and Tems) awesome performances in Uganda, the Police force in Uganda arrested the talented Nigerian artists but the reasons for their arrest weren’t made known.

Many tagged their arrest for breaking the COVID-19 rules in the country but it was later revealed that their arrest doesn’t have anything to do with COVID-19 rules.

Shortly after their release from the detention in Uganda, Tems has appeared on social media to let the birds out of the cage, on the action and steps Bebe Cool took as regards her arrest alongside Omah Lay.

The chief magistrate court of Makindye, Uganda issued a release order for Tems and Omah Lay who were arrested after a show and detained on Sunday, 13th of December 2020.

This release order which was issued on Wednesday, 15th of December 2020 covered not only the rising stars, Omah Lay and Tems but also the manager, Muyiwa Awoniyi. Part of the release order reads:

“The charges against the accused as Stanley Omah Didia, as Temilade Openiyi, and as Muyiwa Awoniyi the said accuses persons from your custody forthwith unless held on other charges.”

Bebe Cool has been accused of being involved in the situation that led to Omah Lay and Tems being arrested in Uganda.

A few days before the ill-fated event which the two Nigerian Stars were supposed to perform, Bebe had made a post on Facebook condemning their invitation.

He had subtlety threatened to ruin the event if it wasn’t stopped writing, “I will every effort to fail this event”

On Sunday, the 13th of December, Omah Lay, and Tems were arrested following their performance at a concert the previous night.
