Nigerian folk legend Beautiful Nubia has sparked controversy online after accusing gospel musicians Yinka Ayefele and rising act BBO of lifting the melody of his 1997 classic Seven Lifes without permission.

Taking to X on Thursday, Beautiful Nubia, whose real name is Segun Akinlolu, expressed frustration over what he described as repeated copyright violations by gospel artists.

He specifically called out Ayefele’s 2012 track, My Faith in God (Igbagbo Ireti), and BBO’s 2026 release, Amin, claiming both borrowed the core melody from his original composition.

“There was Yinka Ayefele with My Faith in God (Igbagbo Ireti) in 2012 and now someone called BBO with Amin this year. Both stole their melodies from our original song Seven Lifes,” he wrote. “When will Nigerians (especially the so-called gospel musicians) learn to respect copyright?”

The folk singer’s comments highlight ongoing debates about intellectual property in Nigeria’s music industry, particularly regarding gospel artists’ adherence to copyright laws.

As of now, neither Yinka Ayefele nor BBO has publicly responded to the allegations, leaving fans and industry watchers waiting for a reaction.

Nigerian singer and sonic artist Ọlawale Ọlọfọrọ, popularly known as Brymo, has remarked and shared his thought on fellow musicians Beautiful Nubia and Asa’s music.

The sonic-artiste offered his music counterparts their rightful flowers and appreciation.

Asa, a Nigerian-French soul singer, songwriter, and recording artist, and Beautiful Nubia, a seasoned folk songwriter, composer, and band leader, both significantly contribute to the diversity of Nigerian music as an export to other areas of the world.

In a Twitter space, he hosted on March 15, 2023, tagged “Joy and Wait (Pain)...” when he was asked for his opinion by a fan, Brymo, who recently released his debut musical album “Mansa,” talked highly of Beautiful Nubia and Asa.

Brymo said that Beautiful Nubia is an expert who showed him the ropes on how to be a successful independent musician who creates everlasting songs.

The controversial Brymo continued by praising Asa as the pioneer of alternative music in Nigeria, a genre that has given rise to a number of amazing talents that are not required to record “club” songs in order to be deemed “successful.”
