The issue of song ownership and theft among Nigerian artists is perhaps as old as the music industry itself.

Many artists have clashed with other artists and even record labels over the years on who is the true owner of particular songs.

Given the recent incident between comedian Carterefe and Berri Tiga over ownership of a song, Mp3bullet.ng compiled a list of the major times Nigerian artists have fought over the ownership of their song.

Carterefe/Berri Tiga (Machala)

Due to his appearances in sketches, Oderhohwo Efe, nicknamed Carterefe, was better known as an Instagram comedian. Many people were astonished, however, when Efe announced the release of a new song called ‘Machala.’ He was reported to feature an artist named Berri Tiga.

However, there was great confusion when people heard the song and realised that Berri Tiga sang a sizable amount of it. In actuality, Carter seems to have just appeared vocally in the intro.

Since Berri did not cry foul, many felt Carter was indeed the rightful owner of the song and that the duo had a working arrangement.

Thus, it was unexpected to learn that the song had been removed from a number of music streaming services, including Apple Music and Spotify.

No reasons were given; however, insiders say it might not be unconnected to the ownership and rights tussle between both artists.

The fallout between Efe and Tiga began when Berri Tiga, in an Instagram life, said, “I wrote and sang Machala 100 Percent”.

Efe, who unfollowed Berri Tiga on Instagram, accused him of seeking attention.

Efe also shared a screenshot of a conversation in which Berri Tiga thanked him for the opportunity to appear in the song.

Efe also stated that another artist, Hotkid, had a verse on the song, but Tiga begged with him to remove it since Hotkid would ‘take the shine’ off the tune. He continued, saying Berri was thanking him for the chance while also claiming ownership of the song on Instagram.

Portable/Poco Lee (Zazzu Zeh)

To call Habeeb Okikiola, known as Portable, one of the most contentious artists in recent times is an understatement.

The musician has primarily been in the headlines for the wrong reasons since he rose to fame in the latter half of 2021.

Recall that he first gained popularity when his song, “Zazzu Zeh,” on which he collaborated with rapper Olamide, was released. His reputation soared, and he received invitations to perform at numerous events.

However, his relationship with Poco Lee did not endure long, as he accused the latter of attempting to rip (cheat) him off. He said that Poco Lee uploaded the music on the Internet and claimed ownership.

Shortly after performing at the popular singer, Wizkid’s concert in December, Portable made a video to accuse Poco Lee of stealing his song, and the $3,000 sprayed on him on the stage by Wizkid.

Speaking in Yoruba, he said, “Wizkid blessed me with $3,000. But Poco Lee, the dancer, picked the money. Out of $3,000, he gave me only $600. I am a street boy. Poco Lee, you did not show love at all. Rather, your intention was to rip (cheat) me. Are you the owner of the song? Why was the song released as ‘Poco Lee featuring Portable and Olamide’; instead of it being the other way round? Are you mad? You had better respect yourself.”

Due to the several controversies, Portable has been involved in, Poco Lee has distanced himself from the singer. In a tweet which many believed was targeted at the singer, Lee wrote, “I wish I never took that talkative nuisance out of the trenches.”

Tiwa Savage/Seyi Shay (Lova Lova)

For as long as anyone can remember, there has been no love lost between Tiwa Savage and Seyi Shay. They clashed at a hair salon as their hostility came to a head. Tiwa could be heard yelling when Shay approached her to meet her in Online videos that went viral.

Savage requested Shay not to approach her since she knows she (Shay) dislikes her and has spoken critically about her.

Shortly after the occurrence, Seyi Shay stated in an interview that she composed Savage’s verse in the song “Lova Lova,” which featured Duncan Mighty. She implied that Savage had taken certain efforts to undermine her brand.

She said, “This is the same person that took my song, ‘Lova Lova’, which is one of her biggest songs ever. I composed that song with…but when I called her that I co-wrote the song, she said she did not believe what I said, and she refused to compensate me.

“She was the same person who attacked a popular artiste because she featured on my song, after the artiste had featured on her own song too. She also approached a popular brand to withdraw me as their ambassador. All these have been going on for years but I said nothing about it. It is just unfortunate.”

However, the duo appears to have put the incident behind them, as they shared a hug at a concert in December 2021.

It also bears stating that an artiste, Danny Young, once sued Savage to the tune of N200m. According to Young, Savage used some lines from his song, ‘Oju ti ti Won’ in her song, ‘All Over’.

Both parties later settled the case out of court.

Ay.com/Terry G (Pass Me your Love)

Though both artists, Gabriel Amanyi (Terry G) and Ayoola Johnson (Ay.com), are no longer as popular as they once were, many people remember their nasty feud over a song.

The song “Pass Me Your Love” by Ay.com was once among the most popular in the nation. He featured Terry G, who was another popular performer at the time.

However, relations between them soured, and Ay requested that Terry stop singing the song at events and concerts. He said that Terry G was performing the song like it was his own and stealing the spotlight.

At the height of their spat, Ay once stormed an event where Terry G had performed the song.

Taking to the stage, the former said, “Whenever you are cheated, you have to speak up. Otherwise, you would lose out. What happened between me and Terry G had to happen. I want to explain something to my fans. I composed the song.

“How would you feel that after your hard work, another man is reaping the fruits of your labour? He was performing the song and getting paid. Meanwhile, me as the rightful owner of the house, would be at home doing nothing. I even told me that we should perform the song together whenever he had a show, but he did not listen to me. To all my fans, whenever you see Terry G performing ‘Pass Me your Love’, please stop him, to help the Nigerian music industry.”

However, in an interview years ago, Ay claimed that the matter had been resolved amicably.

He said, “Me and Terry G is an old issue, and I don’t really like to talk about it anymore. We are ‘cool’ with each other now. We are colleagues and as regards working with him again, nobody can predict the future.”

Apparently still attached to the song, Ay.com recently released its remix; over 10 years after the first song was released. On the remix, he featured Peruzzi. However, it did not do as well as the original version.”

2Baba/Blackface (African Queen)

Both Ahmedu Obiabo (Blackface) and Innocent Idibia (2baba, also known as 2face), who hails from Benue State, were formerly members of Plantashun Boiz. However, things have started to fall apart between the former friends and partners.

After 2baba went solo, he recorded a song called ‘African Queen,’ which is still one of the singer’s biggest hits. It may be found on his first solo album, “Face 2 Face.”

Later, Blackface stepped out to claim ownership of the song, a claim that 2baba did not contest.

Blackface eventually started insulting 2baba at any chance he got. This prompted the latter to file a N50 million character defamation lawsuit against Blackface.

Though different stakeholders and important personalities have tried to mend fences between the duo, the truce never lasts.

However, in 2019, they both agree to settle the matter out of court. A source close to the duo was alleged to have said, “After the successful mediation, Blackfaze promised not to publicly accuse 2baba again, while 2baba agreed to make all the necessary corrections and amendments that had prevented Blackfaze from receiving royalties.”

Blackface even went on to release his own version of ‘African Queen’, but it did not do nearly as well as 2baba’s version.

Most times when these beef happens, fans are put in tight corners especially those who admire the two Nigerian artists involved.

Fortunately, in recent years, musicians have reconciled and grudges have been settled, allowing fans to take a deep breath and exhale with relief.

We take a look at five times Nigerian artists have settled their beef.

Davido and Wizkid

This has to be one of the most viral love and hate relationships that exist in the music industry.

Davido and Wizkid are at the top of their careers and for as long as one can remember, at being at loggerheads, although not openly.

Even when there looks to be a ceasefire between the two, their fans continue the war on their behalf.

What started out as mere social media and industry comparison turned out to become a real-life issue.

Davido and Wizkid like every music artiste in this article started out as friends but the rapid growth of the former saw him become rival to a man that used to inspire his work.

The pair had been in a heated battle of supremacy along the lines of chart list dominance, talents, and the calibres of international collaborations for years.

The first time the duo were publicly sorted their issue was during Wizkid’s concert, which took place at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos in December 2017 where they performed together.

However, their feud continued the following years disappointing many music lovers and worsening the issue between the fanbases.

Recently a video of them cuddling appeared online, which sent the internet into a frenzy. The two were apparently clubbing at Quilox when they saw each other and gave each other a hearty hug.

Don Jazzy and Olamide

This was undoubtedly the most high-profile celebrity feud of 2016. It all started with Don Jazzy’s singer, Reekado Banks, receiving the highly coveted Next Rated Award at the Headies Awards.

Olamide was disappointed since he had hoped that his artist at the moment, Lil Kesh, would receive the prize. He expressed his dissatisfaction while accepting his own award.

Don Jazzy, who felt slighted by Olamide’s outburst, stormed the stage and demanded that Olamide come up to the podium and accept the prize for the prized award, a car, if he feel wronged.

Olamide, enraged, vented his rage on Twitter, where he called out Don Jazzy. Aliko Dangote, a billionaire industrialist, was said to have intervened and resolved the disagreement.

P-square

P-square’s split was one of the most shocking breakups in the Industry as they were twins and not many people expected that even blood wouldn’t be enough reason to hold them together.

After a series of online dragging, The duo which is made up of Peter and Paul Okoye split in 2017 after falling out over a family dispute.

In a post on Instagram in 2021, the two reconciled and jointly celebrated their 40th birthday, publicly announcing to followers that they were back together.

They also hosted a reunion event which reminded fans of their greatness.

2Baba and Blackface

After years of hostility, 2baba and Blackface reconciled and buried the hatchet.

Years ago, 2baba (Innocent Idibia) and his old Plantashun Boiz label mate Blackface (Ahmedu Augustine Obiabo) had a falling out when the latter accused the former of ripping off his song, African Queen.

African Queen was originally created by Blackface, but 2Baba allegedly remade the song without giving him credit, causing him to lose royalties.

An enraged Blackface, who has been passionate about his charges since the release of African Queen in 2004, has pursued it with all means available, including calling out his former label partner on social media.

2Baba, enraged by Blackface’s frequent attacks, filed a defamation suit against him for N50 million, resulting in the music industry’s most famous legal battle.

After a supposed out-of-court settlement, Blackface agreed to stop publicly defaming 2Face’s image in exchange for the latter agreeing to work out a settlement plan allowing the former to profit from the hit single’s earnings.

Despite the fact that they both chose an out-of-court settlement, their rivalry lasted after several attempts to reconcile them by entertainment industry giants failed.

However, after the shocking death of Sound Sultan in 2021, Eddy Lawani, the man who literarily found Plantashun Boiz, used Sound Sultan’s tribute night to bring the feuding parties together.

After what could be perceived as a squashing of their long-running feud, the event reached a pinnacle with a magnificent musical performance by Plantashun Boiz (2Face, Blackface, and Faze).

Zlatan and DJ Cuppy

DJ Cuppy and Zlatan in 2021 made the headlines after the former took to social media to reveal that the latter had blocked her on all available social media channels.

Zlatan did not help issues when he denied knowing who Cuppy was when asked about the issue during an interview.

Afeare Israel also known as Israel DMW, logistics manager to Davido revealed that the Zanku rapper did not make any money from his collaboration with DJ cuppy in their hit song ‘Gelato’.

Thankfully, the Billionaire heiress/DJ made peace with Zlatan during his O2 show.

The duo successfully reunited on a Sunday night and performed their hit single “Gelato”, during Zlatan’s debut O2 show.

M.I Abaga and Vector

In 2019, Vector made headlines after he dropped a diss song for fellow rapper, M.I Abaga. Prior to that, there had been cold tension between the two and wasn’t until Vector dropped a diss track, things began to unravel.

This led to a couple of diss songs traded between the two rappers and a docu-series by Hennessy on the growth of Hip-Hop in Nigeria.

In 2020, decided to sheath their swords and end their famous beef which dominated the Nigerian rap scene the previous year.

In the third and final part of “The Conversation”, a Hennessy Nigeria documentary series based on the rivalry between M.I and Vector, the duo met face-to-face and discussed what transpired between them.

The episode started with both rappers previewing what the other had said during the course of the series. At one point, M.I said he had the impression that Vector just doesn’t like him, while Vector said he believes M.I is cunning and deceptive.

Later, M.I and Vector were invited into the same room where they discussed their rivalry and resolved the issues between them.

Not too long, Vector dropped a rap track titled “Crown of Clay” which featured M.I and Pheelz. In 2022, they also dropped another track titled ‘Spirit“.

Burna Boy and Davido

Another major beef in the Nigerian music industry that also came to an end was that of Burna Boy and Davido.

The “Bank On It” crooner took to his Instagram story to inform his fans that he has “no issue” with Davido, assuring that they have now settled their drawn-out rift.

The head or tail of their beef isn’t certain but according to Davido in an interview with notable compere Ebuka on Bounce radio, his relationship with Burna Boy went sour after he posted a picture of himself and Wizkid as the “greatest of all time(goat).”

Shortly after Davido’s post, Burna Boy tweeted “everybody knows you don’t know how to play football, your dad bought the football team.”

Ever since then the duo have not ceased to take shady jabs at each other publicly.

Moving forward, Burna boy insists they must love themselves regardless.

“2022 all of us must love ourselves by fire by force, if not make we just kill ourselves,” Burna Boy said.

It’s one thing to go to the top; it’s quite another to stay there. We see this a lot in the music industry, where many musicians have struggled to maintain their position at the top following the success of their initial hit songs.

Not every musician has been fortunate enough to stay relevant in the industry for a long time, while some faded away as soon as their initial hit single dropped off the charts.

So let’s take a look at those artists that faded from the limelight after their initial big single.

Bigiano

No party mix in 2008 was complete without Bigiano’s smash hit “Shayo.” The song was so well-liked that it became a street anthem. Many people assumed that Bigiano would stay at the top for a long time because of the song’s success, but this was not the case.

Bigiano took a break from the spotlight during the height of his popularity, only to return a few years later with the song “Tonight.” However, the song failed to garner the same level of attention as his first hit song, and he has not been able to return to the top since.

Weird MC

When Weird MC’s name is mentioned, the monster smash song “Ijoya” immediately springs to mind.

With the release of the song in 2006, she became a national sensation and imprinted her name in gold in the minds of music fans. She had released an album in 1996, but Ijoya was her first hit, and it was this song that first brought her to the attention of the public.

Although Ijoya was a financial success, her album “After the Storm” fell short of expectations.

After the triumph of Ijoya, she featured on a series of songs like “Bizzy Body” remix by P-square but none of her solo songs have managed to dominate airwaves since then.

In October 2020, she was photographed in London during the EndSARS protest.

Klever Jay

Klever Jay shot to fame in 2008 with the release of his smash single “Koni Koni Love.” The song became well-known throughout the country, and he was happy of his popularity.

The song was a watershed moment in his life and career, and it is still his most famous tune. Klever Jay, on the other hand, was unable to produce another hit song after that.

The singer released numerous other songs after the popularity of “Koni Koni Love,” but none of them were able to keep him on the pedestal that “Koni Koni Love” had placed him on. Klever Jay quickly vanished from the scene, and nothing has been heard of him since.

Paul Play Dairo

Even if the younger generation does not listen to him, Paul Play Dairo is a living Afro music legend.

The son of Nigerian bandleader, I.K. Dairo, who was dubbed the “Father of Juju Music” for his part in inventing that musical style, finally superseded West African high life as Nigeria’s national sound.

Paul’s music is based on high life, like his father’s, but he also incorporates Gospel, R&B, and Soul into the mix. He knows how to serenade his audience properly, and he does so with the most basic of lyrics to deliver his message of love.

His song titled, ‘Angel of my life’ was one of all-time popular classics, where he expressed all the emotions and feelings he has for the woman in his life, and how he would be without her. But he has faded from the scene.

Many years ago, singer AY.com was ranked as one of the best in the music industry for his hit song, ‘Pass me your Love,’ featuring Terry G.

After claims sparked a conflict between him and Terry G, the singer, whose true name is Ayoola Johnson, disappeared from the music industry.

Ay.com went on to record other singles, including ‘Jombolo,’ ‘Komagbon,’ and ‘No Mind Dem‘ but none could replicate his success like “Pass Me Your Love.”

While X Project didn’t have any other ance anthem like “Lori Le“, they would be remembered for the magic they made on this song.

Close To You- Mo’Hits All-Stars(D’banj, Wande Coal, Dr Sid)

The defunct Mo’hits crew gave us good music back in the mid-2000s. The crew led by Don Jazzy and D’banj dropped an album, “Curriculum Vitae” in 2007.

From the album, is this classic number “Close To You“. It features Wande Coal’s stellar vocals, D’Banj’s kokolet crooning frenzy, D’Prince and Dr Sid’s impressive rap cuts and of course, beats savvy Don Jazzy.

Pass My Your Love- Ay.Com ft Terry G

When AY.Com and Terry G released this smash hit single in 2009, it swept the music industry by storm.

The creativity behind this music is an awesome one. There aren’t many songs from that year that still sound like hits today.

The song dropped at the time Terry G was a rave act already disturbing the air with “Free Madness”.

In 2021, AY.Com made a comeback into the Industry with a remix of the song featuring Peruzzi.

Free Madness- Terry G

There used to be a time when Terry G was the main deal of the street. The singer’s eccentric style of music which was a fusion of fast-paced beat and heavy Lamba had the streets in a chokehold with his music.

The singer has a lot of evergreen songs but the biggest of them is his 2008 “Free Madness.” The song which sounds like a freestyle was a turning point for the singer.

Over the Moon- Dr Sid ft Kayswitch

Dr SID released his debut album, “Turning Point” in 2010. Prior to that, he had featured on Mo’hits compilation album, “Curriculum Vitae” where he had appeared on 7 tracks out of ts 15 songs.

Dr SID who was predominately a rap artist was revamped by Don Jazzy into a singer and dropped “Turning Point” in 2010.

The album had a lot of hits like ‘Pop Something“, “Something About You“, “Winchi Winchi” but one of its biggest was the Kayswitch-assisted “Over The Moon”

From the intro of the song, you already know it’s about to become a euphoric ride.

Do Me- P-square

P-square is one of the foremost Nigerian music groups that entertained the African and international music scene with their songs for years until their separation in 2017.

The music duo had hits that one can’t forget and it was shard picking a song. For this list, Mp3bullet.ng decided to go with “Do Me“.

“Do Me” contains the stunning vocals of Afrocentric music singer Waje and her mezzo-soprano.

In a completely separate context, the video depicts the twin brothers in their early game-changing styletitude, which they’ve always had a talent for reflecting hip culture.

The song is one of the smashing hit songs off their third studio album, “Game Over“.

Pakurumo- Wizkid

Wizkid might be the present day Afrobeat King but his journey started in 2010 with his debut album, “Superstar”

“Superstar” was a versatile album with diverse songs but one in particular, “Pakurumo” was showcased a different dimension to Wizkid.

While Wizkid had a lot of pop and R’n’B songs on the album, “Pakurumo” caught people because of the fuji infused sound.

The music video had a cameo of celebrities like Funke Akindele, Banky W, Ice Prince, Alibaba among others.

Dem Mama- Timaya

Timaya has been in the industry since 2005 and over the years propel pop and dancehall sound in the Nigerian Music Industry.

His first song, “Dem Mama” launched his career as part of his debut album, ‘True Story”.

The socio-political song is an ode to the tragic massacre that happened in Odi, Bayelsa in 1999 by the Nigerian military.

Timaya made a song that was both danceable and impactful.

You Bad- Wande coal ft D’banj

In 2009, Wande Coal dropped one of Nigeria’s best albums of the decade, ‘Mushin to Mohits.” While the album had a lot of hits to take from, Mp3bullet.ng picked “You Bad”

• Danny Young – Oju Tiwon

Also meant to be on this list is one of 2010 sensations Danny Young. Oju ti ti won which stands as one of the best party banger released in 2009, Oju ti Tiwon shook the music industry so much as you hardly visited a party without them playing the track. Tipped to be the next big thing in the music scene alongside Klever J and K Solo failed to fulfil the production of many as they didn’t last long in the music scene.

• Klever Jay- Koni Koni Love

Another artist that is worthy to be on this list is our very own free madness crooner Terry G. Famous for his freestyle, and other hit songs released between 2008 and 2010, one would have easily predicted that Terry G as at 2020 would be a music don like Olamide, Davido and Wizkid however, the reverse is the case as the free madness crooner is struggling to revive his career with his new release Adura.

Also on this list is a song from the Ile Ijo crooner Mr May D. Sound track was a hit that rocked every DJ’s turntable as it made music lovers shake body.

• Cynthia Morgan – I’m Taken

Topping this list is song from currently trending artists, Cynthia Morgan with her 2014 release I’m Taken. Cynthia who became the talk of social media after her live Instagram session with Tunde Ednut revealed how her Record label ruined her music career. According to her then-boss stripped her of everything she could use to make it musically. However, a jar of hope has sprung up for her as artists have pledged to help her rise again.
