Nominees for the Women’s Ballon d’Or 2023 have been announced, and with two-time defending champion Alexia Putellas sidelined due to injuries, a new recipient will be celebrated on October 30.

The Women’s Ballon d’Or, though relatively new in the realm of world football, has rapidly become an aspiration for many of the globe’s finest players. Following a remarkable 12 months in women’s football, the shortlist for the 2023 award has been disclosed.

The 2022-23 season was marked by Spanish football’s dominance, with Barcelona securing both their domestic title and the Champions League crown. Subsequently, La Roja triumphed in the World Cup, delivering an exhilarating tournament in Australia and New Zealand.

Despite this, Alexia Putellas, a two-time winner of the Ballon d’Or, is no longer a contender after missing much of the season due to a knee injury; her club and international teammate, Aitana Bonmati, is the current favorite to succeed Putellas in winning the Golden Ball.

Nigeria forward Asisat Oshoala believes the Super Falcons have a great chance to come out of their group in the 2023 World Cup.

The Super Falcons, who qualified after defeating Cameroon 1-0 in the quarter-finals of the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco on July 14, will be making a tenth appearance at the global competition.

In the competition, which Australia and New Zealand will jointly host from July 20 to August 20, Nigeria was set to play Olympic champions Canada and Australia.

On July 21, they will play Canada to start their Group B campaign. On July 27, they will play Australia, and on July 31, they will play the Republic of Ireland to finish the round.

 “I think we have a really good group. It’s the World Cup and it’s not meant to be easy or a walk in the park,” Oshoala said as quoted by BBC Sport Africa.

“With the group we have, I feel we have a chance. We get to play Canada, a team we know very well, and of course Australia.

“It won’t be easy against the Republic of Ireland, but we had Australia in our 2015 group. We lost to them 2-0. It’s a good opportunity for us to come back and also prove that we’ve improved from the team that played seven years ago. We have a very good group and are really excited for the tournament.”

She will hope to be in action when Barcelona take on Rosengard in Group D matchday two of their Champions League campaign at Malmo Idrottsplats on Thursday.
