    A recent TikTok trend has gone viral in which young people document their parents or elder family members’ reactions to the fake news of their favourite celebrity’s demise.

    Finally making its way to South Africa, the TikTok celebrity death fake trend has claimed its newest victim in Somizi Mhlongo.

    On Monday, Mhlongo posted many TikTok videos to his Instagram account in which some of his supporters can be seen reacting to the news of his fictitious demise. “Dark humour……the first one killed me with laughter”. he said in the post’s caption.

    A young man is heard informing Gogo (grandma) in one of the videos by @andybandeza that Somizi, DJ Tira, and Simphiwe Tshabalala perished in a car accident while travelling from OR Tambo International Airport.

    Another video shows the elderly grandmother screaming after learning that Somizi had passed away from her young daughter Lebo.

    “What? Somizi, is he dead? What happened?” enquired the unsuspecting granny.

    While the “Dream With Somizi” star found these videos amusing, many of his fans seemed unimpressed by the pranks.

    “This is NOT funny at all,” commented legendary singer Yvonne Chaka Chaka.

    “So (the) first time I came across this I wasn’t watching the video, I heard the audio. MY HEART. The shock & was just after U said U are landing at 4h30. I became dizzy. I was so mad to learn it was a prank. I HATE these pranks ????,” said reality TV star and activist Yaya Mavundla.

    “I hate this prank ???????????? but I am curious on whose name that woman was about to mention bewitched you????????????,” said “House of Zwide” actor Khaya Dladla.

    “I don’t like this prank at all. ????,” wrote Andisa Mngadi.

    “Nna personally I don’t like these jokes tsa bone.. they must stop it please,” added another fan of Lerato Molotsi.

    Slater Vance, the 16-year-old son of Angela Bassett, who played Michael B. Jordan in the film “Black Panther,” recently apologised for participating in the trend.

    “I would sincerely like to apologise for taking part in such a harmful trend. Taking part in a trend like this is completely disrespectful.

    “I don’t wish any bad ramifications of this on his family nor my parents, as they deserve none of the backlashes. I know this was a mistake,” said Vance, according to BuzzFeed.

    Denzel Washington, Taylor Swift, and Julia Roberts are some more famous celebrities who have recently been the targets of celebrity death scandals.
