Nottingham Forest have officially appointed Sean Dyche as their new head coach, the club announced on Tuesday, confirming the 52-year-old’s return to familiar ground after years away from his boyhood side.

Forest’s move for Dyche came swiftly in the wake of Ange Postecoglou’s dismissal, which followed a disappointing 3–0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge over the weekend.

The former Everton and Burnley boss, who began his football journey as a youth player at Forest, will make his managerial debut for the club on Thursday when they face FC Porto in the Europa League.

Dyche has signed a contract running until the summer of 2027, becoming Forest’s third manager of a turbulent season. Postecoglou had replaced Nuno Espirito Santo, who departed after clashing with owner Evangelos Marinakis and sporting director Edu Gaspar.

In a statement on their official website, Forest described Dyche as “a respected and experienced Premier League manager” who brings “the perfect blend of character, tactical acumen and proven achievement to guide the club through its next chapter.”

The statement added:

“Having managed more than 330 Premier League matches in his career to date, Dyche has built teams defined by defensive organisation, resilience, and strength from set pieces — qualities that align closely with the current squad’s attributes and the club’s footballing identity.”

“As a former Forest youth player who lives locally, Dyche also has a deep understanding of the values and pride of Forest and its supporters. With his character, tactical acumen and man-management skills, his appointment represents the best opportunity for a successful and competitive season across both domestic and European competitions.”

Nottingham Forest is delighted to confirm the appointment of Sean Dyche as the Club’s new Head Coach, following a thorough recruitment process led by Global Head of Football, Edu Gaspar, and Global Technical Director, George Syrianos.

Postecoglou’s exit brings an abrupt end to a 39-day tenure, marking the shortest permanent managerial spell in Premier League history after he failed to win any of his eight matches in charge.

Before settling on Dyche, Marinakis reportedly considered several high-profile names, including Roberto Mancini and Marco Silva, but ultimately chose the Englishman for his experience and stability.

Dyche has been out of management since January after parting ways with Everton, where he spent two years. During his spell at Goodison Park, he notably kept the Toffees in the top flight amid points deductions for financial breaches.

Prior to that, Dyche’s nine-and-a-half-year stint at Burnley cemented his reputation as one of English football’s most resilient tacticians, guiding the club to several Premier League seasons and even European qualification.

Now back where it all began, Dyche’s challenge is clear — to steady a Forest side searching for identity and results in both the Premier League and Europe.

The club confirmed his dismissal less than 20 minutes after their 3-0 home defeat to Chelsea on Saturday, ending the Australian’s brief 39-day spell at the City Ground.

In an official statement, Forest said:

“Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that after a series of disappointing results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect. The club will make no further comment at this time.”

— Nottingham Forest (@NFFC) October 18, 2025

Postecoglou, 60, was appointed on September 9, signing a two-year contract following the departure of Nuno Espírito Santo. However, his tenure quickly unraveled, with Forest losing six and drawing two of their eight games under his watch.

During his short reign, Forest conceded 11 goals from set pieces—more than twice as many as any other Premier League team over the same period—underscoring their defensive frailties.

Below is a breakdown of Postecoglou’s results in charge of Nottingham Forest:

Arsenal 3–0 Nottingham Forest – Premier League

Swansea 3–2 Nottingham Forest – Carabao Cup

Burnley 1–1 Nottingham Forest – Premier League

Real Betis 2–2 Nottingham Forest – Europa League

Nottingham Forest 0–1 Sunderland – Premier League

Nottingham Forest 2–3 FC Midtjylland – Europa League

Newcastle 2–0 Nottingham Forest – Premier League

Nottingham Forest 0–3 Chelsea – Premier League

The sacking brings a swift end to what was expected to be a fresh chapter for Forest under Postecoglou, who was brought in to stabilize the team and instill an attacking identity. Instead, his tenure will be remembered as one of the shortest and most turbulent in recent Premier League history.

The club has yet to name an interim replacement, but sources suggest an announcement could follow soon as Forest look to recover from a difficult start to their campaign.

Ange Postecoglou says he is focused on writing a fresh chapter in Nottingham Forest’s history rather than trying to silence critics after being officially presented as the club’s new manager on Thursday.

“I don’t see it as a point to prove. You let your actions speak for themselves,” the 60-year-old told reporters at the City Ground, where he was unveiled as Nuno Espirito Santo’s replacement.

“You have to understand the responsibility you have. Football clubs exist to bring joy to supporters — they are the lifeblood of this game. That’s all I care about. I’ll win things here and people will still have doubts about me.”

Postecoglou arrives in Nottingham just two months after being dismissed by Tottenham Hotspur, despite guiding the London side to Europa League glory. Spurs’ 17th-place Premier League finish had already sealed his fate.

“It wasn’t great, but I knew it was coming long before the Europa League final,” he admitted. “Maybe these things happen for a reason, because now I have this opportunity.”

The call to take over Forest came unexpectedly. “I was on the school run when it came through. Once we got into discussions, it didn’t take much to realise it was a great opportunity,” he said.

Espirito Santo had led Forest to seventh in the league and a European return, but a breakdown in his relationship with club owner Evangelos Marinakis paved the way for change.

“The opportunity presented itself because of the work I’ve done,” said Postecoglou, who previously ended Tottenham’s 15-year trophy drought and won two Scottish Premiership titles with Celtic.

Still, he acknowledged the challenge of convincing Forest’s loyal fanbase. “They’re not going to love me on the first day. I’ve got to earn their respect. But this is a unique club, and when you build momentum here, special things can happen.”

Known for his uncompromising attacking philosophy, the Australian-Greek coach insisted he would not abandon his style. “I want my teams to play exciting football, to score goals, and to win games. I make no apologies for that.”

Postecoglou’s debut in charge will be no easy task: Forest open their Premier League campaign with a daunting trip to Arsenal on Saturday. “It is what it is. Every Premier League fixture is tough. It’s a great game to start with,” he said.

The Australian manager has signed a two-year deal that will keep him at the City Ground until 2027. Forest acted swiftly to secure his services during the international break, ensuring stability ahead of the Premier League’s return.

A club statement released on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, read:

“Nottingham Forest is delighted to confirm the appointment of Ange Postecoglou as the Club’s First Team Head Coach. Postecoglou has been in management for over 25 years, arriving on Trentside with experience of regularly competing and winning trophies at the highest level. After enjoying very successful seasons with Brisbane Roar and Yokohama F. Marinos, winning the League with both clubs, he was appointed manager of Celtic in June 2021.

A successful tenure in Glasgow saw Postecoglou win the domestic double in his first season in Scotland and the treble in his second year, which earned him a nomination for the FIFA World Coach of the Year in 2023. Moving to England to take over at Tottenham Hotspur, who finished fifth in his first season, Postecoglou guided Spurs to their first major trophy in 17 years, winning the Europa League in 2024/25 and qualifying for the Champions League.”

Postecoglou replaces Nuno Espírito Santo, whose relationship with club owner Evangelos Marinakis broke down after a series of disagreements over the club’s recruitment strategy.

The Portuguese coach publicly voiced his frustrations last month, highlighting tensions with new Head of Global Football, Edu, particularly around transfer targets such as Adama Traoré.

Forest will now look to turn the page under Postecoglou, whose attacking philosophy and proven track record of success made him a top candidate. His first game in charge comes against Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday, September 14, while a reunion with his former club Tottenham is set for December 13.

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has opened up about the surprise decision to part ways with Ange Postecoglou, just 16 days after the Australian manager led the club to a historic Europa League victory over Manchester United.

The dismissal, which stunned fans and pundits alike, came despite Postecoglou delivering Spurs’ first major silverware in 17 years.

Speaking during an appearance on The Overlap with Gary Neville, Levy offered insight into the board’s reasoning behind the controversial move.

While acknowledging the significance of the Europa League triumph, Levy stressed that the club’s alarming league form forced their hand. Spurs finished 17th in the Premier League, losing 22 matches a performance Levy deemed unacceptable.

“Ultimately, the decision sits with me, but it’s always a collective decision. We have a board of directors and a technical group who advise. We couldn’t ignore the league results. Ange just won us a European trophy, and that’s a proud moment — he’ll always be a part of our history. But finishing 17th in the league is not where Tottenham belongs,” Levy explained.

He added that the club had to set emotion aside and make a decision based on data and long-term goals.

Postecoglou was swiftly replaced by former Brentford manager Thomas Frank, who now faces the challenge of rebuilding the squad and steering Spurs back into top-flight contention.

Levy promised that Frank would be backed fully in the transfer market and revealed that the club has already invested significantly under his tenure.

“We will support him to the best of our ability. Since the stadium opened, we’ve been among the top four spenders in transfer fees — close to £700 million net. It’s not just about spending. It’s about balance, good fortune, and having the right coach. We believe Thomas has what it takes to bring the club back to the top.”

Tottenham have already made major moves in the summer window. Ghanaian midfielder Mohammed Kudus joined from West Ham for £55 million, while French forward Mathys Tel’s loan deal was made permanent in a £30 million agreement, signaling the club’s intent under Frank’s leadership.

As Spurs fans adjust to the abrupt managerial shift, all eyes will be on whether the new era can deliver both results and consistency, something Postecoglou, despite his European success, couldn’t achieve in the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola has expressed his admiration for Ange Postecoglou’s coaching abilities, citing his admiration for the Australian’s work since their first encounter in a pre-season friendly in 2019.

Guardiola revealed that he was impressed by how well Postecoglou’s Yokohama F. Marinos side played during that match, despite Manchester City securing a 3-1 victory. The Japanese team displayed a strong possession game against City.

As Manchester City prepares to face Postecoglou’s current team, Tottenham Hotspur, Guardiola acknowledges the aggressive approach of Spurs, despite their recent poor form. The two managers will meet on Sunday at Etihad Stadium, and Guardiola’s respect for Postecoglou’s coaching style adds an interesting dynamic to the upcoming match.

“I saw clips of his team play and I said ‘wow’, there were things in there I really liked. I told my players we are going to face a good team,” said Guardiola. “We won because we had better players, but I realised this was the first time I met him [but I would see him again]. And since then I have followed him and in a short time he is here.”

The Catalan also talked about Postecoglou improving Spurs in a short period: “He is already there, in a short time. Even in the games they didn’t win lately. I am impressed at many things they do – the chances they create, and aggression in all departments. He came here with nothing and within a few months already you can recognise Spurs as his team.

Every team that plays with desire and determination comes from the manager. He has done this in the past in Japan and in Glasgow with Celtic. He makes football a better place – a person like Ange. I enjoy watching them play and the approach they have. The impact he has made has been quick and really good.”

When asked what he liked about Postecoglou’s teams, he added, “The courage, the high line – so aggressive. Lots of combinations, they use the keeper. They arrive on the [wings], so dynamic, doesn’t matter who they play against, they play their game. It happened in Glasgow and now here. They lost the last [three] games, but the players know why. Lots of similarities when they were winning. Two red cards versus Chelsea, bad moments, but they are always positive.”

Three points ahead of Tottenham, Guardiola’s team is positioned second on the standings. Nevertheless, they are now competing for the crown with league leaders Arsenal, Liverpool, and Aston Villa. In an attempt to stay competitive with the Gunners, who are currently atop the standings, the matchup between the two teams may prove to be vital.

When Tottenham travels to the Etihad, a number of important players will be absent. In a recent loss to Chelsea, Rodrigo Bentancur became the team’s most recent casualty after being the target of a forceful tackle by Matty Cash against Aston Villa. Micky van de Ven and James Maddison also sustained injuries. The absences increase the city’s chances of winning.

Ange Postecoglou has etched his name in history by securing the Barclays Premier League Manager of the Month award for the third consecutive time, adding the October honor to his previous wins in August and September.

This achievement makes him the first Premier League manager ever to claim the first three Manager of the Month awards in a season.

Notably, Postecoglou joins an elite club of managers who have won the award for three consecutive months, a list that includes Antonio Conte, Pep Guardiola, and Jurgen Klopp. The Australian coach now has the opportunity to match Guardiola’s record of four successive awards, a feat the Manchester City manager accomplished during the 2017/18 season.

Tottenham Hotspur concluded October at the summit of the Premier League table, emerging as the only team to secure victories in all of their matches during the month. This success was marked by away wins against Luton Town and Crystal Palace, as well as a 2-0 home triumph over Fulham.

Postecoglou’s recognition came through a combined voting process, including fan votes and the input of a panel of experts.

Mauricio Pochettino shrugged off Chelsea’s struggles against a nine-man Tottenham team and expressed his relief for hat-trick hero Nicolas Jackson.

The two London rivals were deadlocked at 1-1 at halftime, with a Cole Palmer penalty canceling out Dejan Kulusevski’s deflected opener. Jackson, the former Villarreal striker, had been enduring a frustrating night, but he came alive with 15 minutes remaining, putting Chelsea in the lead. Jackson went on to score two more goals in stoppage time, securing a morale-boosting 4-1 away win for Chelsea.

Despite Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie receiving red cards, Ange Postecoglou’s team put up a valiant fight and had opportunities, even with nine players, to salvage something from the match. However, Pochettino believed that Chelsea maintained control throughout the game and forced Tottenham to make mistakes.

When asked if the Blues should have put the game to bed sooner, the Argentine manager told reporters: “I think you are wrong. If you watch Tottenham versus Liverpool, they (Spurs) scored in the last minute. It’s never easy [against a team with] two players sent off. It’s difficult now to talk about tactics but most important is the 4-1 win and three points. I think we deserved to win. We forced them to make too many mistakes.

Tottenham was better in the first 15 minutes and then I think we bossed the game, our performance was good and forced them into making mistakes. If you look at everything you could see during the game, I think it was fair. It could be an important three points for us, to help us now start to push up the table.”

After Jackson joined the Blues in the summer for €35 million (£30 million/$38 million), he has battled with form. Pochettino is hoping that Jackson’s performance will relieve some of the strain on the striker. Before the late surge, the striker had only scored twice in his first nine Premier League games and had even missed a couple of golden opportunities against Tottenham.

“I am happy for him because we know that when strikers don’t score, they suffer,” the manager said. “So that is for people to think. He is really young, arrived to the club this summer, and it’s not easy to play for Chelsea. It’s the history, about winning, lifting trophies. That’s why as a coaching staff we need to provide the tools and be calm with the way we assess things. The confidence is there and I am so happy for him because he deserves the boost.”

Jackson got back on track just in time to score again, and he will look to do so when Chelsea play Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.

Ange Postecoglou expressed his frustration with the constant VAR interventions in the headline-making match where Tottenham suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season to rival Chelsea.

Ange Postecoglou criticizes unrealistic desire for refereeing ‘utopia.’

Postecoglou found it perplexing that there is a persistent pursuit of a “utopia of no wrong decisions.”

Tottenham got an early lead against Chelsea with Dejan Kulusevski’s goal, and they could have been 2-0 ahead in the opening 15 minutes had Son Heung-min’s goal not been disallowed for offside.

Moises Caicedo’s excellent left-footed strike was also ruled out for offside, and Raheem Sterling had a goal disallowed. However, Chelsea benefited from VAR when Cristian Romero was penalized for a dangerous tackle on Enzo Fernandez, leading to his red card and a penalty awarded to Chelsea, which Cole Palmer converted to level the score. This decision-making process took several minutes and left players waiting for the game to resume.

The second half saw more drama as Destiny Udogie received a second yellow card and was sent off, with Chelsea eventually winning 4-1 after breaking through Tottenham’s high defensive line.

Postecoglou, in his post-game comments, emphasized that he was raised to respect the authority of referees and accept their decisions, even though managers often seek ways to work around the rules. He also criticized the intense scrutiny of every incident in modern football and argued that the pursuit of a perfect world of refereeing is unrealistic.

“No, but I think it’s going to become the norm. It’s where the game’s heading,” Postecoglou said, asked if he’d ever been involved in a game as crazy. “Unfortunately it’s how we’re going to have to watch and participate in football from now on because…look I’ve said it before, I don’t like it. I don’t like the standing around. I don’t like the whole theatre around waiting for decisions.

“But I know that I’m in the wilderness with that. I’m on my own. In my 26 years I was always prepared to accept the referee’s decisions, good, bad or otherwise, and I’ve had some shockers in my career let me tell you. I’ve had some go my way as well but I cop that because I just want the game to be played.

“When we’re complaining about decisions every week this is what’s going to happen. If people are going to forensically scrutinise everything to make sure that they’re comfortable that it’s right and even at the end of that we’re still not happy. So what does that mean? It means that we’re going to see a lot of standing around.

You can’t tell me that referees are in control of the game because they’re not.
Fortunately for Spurs and England, James Maddison’s injury doesn’t seem to be too serious.

Maddison and Van de Ven were both injured for the home team at the conclusion of the first half of Monday night’s 4-1 demolition of the nine-man Spurs.

The offensive midfield player went down first, staying in the box unharmed, and then hobbled off to be replaced by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Almost simultaneously, as he raced Nicolas Jackson for the ball, the center back pulled up holding his hamstring. Eric Dier, an out-of-favor player, came on to replace him and make his first appearance of the season.

Asked about the pair post-match, Postecoglou couldn’t share much, saying of Maddison: ‘He got a knock on the ankle, we were down one man already.

‘It made sense to make a couple of changes at that point.’

But as for Van de Ven: ‘It’s too early. With Micky it’s a pretty significant one.

Ange Postecoglou, manager of Tottenham Hotspur, has been selected as Premier League Manager of the Month for September 2023. This accolade followed his August triumph, making him the first Premier League manager to win Manager of the Month in their first two months on the job.

He becomes the first manager to win the first two Manager of the Month honors in a season since Jurgen Klopp in 2019. Notably, Liverpool won the Premier League title that year.

This honor comes as Tottenham Hotspur remains atop the Premier League standings after eight games, with 20 points from a potential 24.

Their good start to the season has been bolstered by Son Heung-min’s exceptional efforts, which earned him the Player of the Month title for September.

While Postecoglou has been cautious about speculation about winning the Premier League title, he appreciates fan excitement and does not discourage it. Spurs’ good success under his guidance has made them a Premier League club to watch this season.
