African music once again took its place on the world stage this week—though not without stirring up debate.

When Rolling Stone unveiled its “100 Best Albums of 2025” on December 3, the list quickly became more than just a ranking. It became a conversation. A celebration. And for many, a puzzle.

Nigerian Albums Make Rolling Stone’s Top 100 of 2025

Three Nigerian albums and one by a Ghanaian-American star broke into the highly coveted list, signalling the global force African music has become. Yet from Lagos to London, the loudest chatter wasn’t only about the names listed but about the one name conspicuously missing: the African Giant himself, Burna Boy.

At the very top of the continent’s representation is none other than Sarz, the iconic producer who has shaped the sound of modern Afrobeats. His debut studio album, Protect Sarz at All Costs, landed at a stunning No. 27, marking a defining moment in his evolution from behind-the-scenes mastermind to full-fledged artist.

The album, hailed as a “reinvention of his legacy,” hosts heavyweight collaborators including Asake on “Happiness,” while weaving Malian kora traditions into sleek Afropop production on tracks like “Getting Paid.” It’s the kind of project that feels both futuristic and rooted—exactly the blend that propelled it into the upper tiers of the global list.

Next up is Amaarae, whose genre-bending album Black Star secured the No. 37 spot. The Ghanaian-American star continued her rebellion against Afrobeats conventions, crafting a world where Brazilian funk, Ghanaian highlife, and glimmering futuristic pop collide.

Critics were especially enamored with “S.M.O.” and the dance-floor favourite “Stuck Up,” the former snagging the title of third-best song of 2025 from Pitchfork. Amaarae’s vision? Decadent, defiant, and deeply rooted in identity.

Further down the ranking, Afrobeats king Davido appears with 5ive, proudly taking the No. 73 spot. The album stands as a victory lap of sorts, an artist with more than a decade at the top reminding the world why he’s still essential.

Featuring the Grammy-nominated hit “With You” with Omah Lay, alongside the Chris Brown collaboration “Titanium” and the spiritual standout “Holy Water,” 5ive reinforces Davido’s unmatched ability to blend crossover appeal with homegrown energy.

Rounding out Africa’s presence is 24-year-old rising star Fola, whose debut project, Catharsis, grabbed No. 88. His inclusion felt symbolic of a shift toward a more vulnerable, emotionally open strain of Nigerian pop.

Described as an “emotional rollercoaster,” the album trades chest-thumping bravado for introspection on tracks like “Gokada” and “Lost”, featuring Kizz Daniel. For many, Fola’s rise is proof that global audiences are now embracing the softer, soul-baring corners of Afrobeats.

73. Davido — 5ive

But the biggest shock? Burna Boy’s absence. His eighth studio album, No Sign of Weakness, released in July 2025, was widely tipped to cut. It wasn’t just commercially visible—it recently earned a 2026 Grammy nomination for Best Global Music Album, his fifth nod in that category.

Despite impressive features from Mick Jagger on “Empty Chairs” and Stromae on “Pardon,” the project faced a mixed critical response and became Burna’s lowest-peaking album on the Billboard 200, debuting at No. 200.

The Grammys saw its value. Rolling Stone, apparently, did not.

Instead, editors seemed drawn toward emerging narratives, new textures, and fresh sonic risks leaving one of Africa’s most dominant voices on the outside looking in.

Ghanaian-American singer Amaarae has openly confirmed that she identifies as queer, a bold revelation that has set off widespread conversations across Africa, particularly in Ghana, where LGBTQ+ topics remain highly sensitive and politically charged.

Amaarae Opens Up About Sexuality, Ignites Debate

Known for her genre-blurring sound and fearless creativity, Amaarae has carved a name for herself on the global stage with hits like Sad Girlz Luv Money. Her recent acknowledgment adds a deeply personal layer to her public persona, positioning her as both a cultural force and an advocate for visibility in spaces where queer voices are often marginalized.

The timing is striking. Ghana continues to debate stricter anti-LBGTQ+ legislation, and conservative cultural attitudes dominate much of the public discourse. In this context, Amaarae’s openness is seen by many as an act of courage, a refusal to hide her identity despite the societal pressures surrounding it.

This isn’t the first time she has faced resistance at home. Earlier in her career, Amaarae revealed that her debut music video was banned on Ghanaian television for featuring transgender individuals—an early indication of the challenges she would confront while championing underrepresented communities through her art.

For Amaarae, the mission goes beyond music. She has spoken about wanting to create art that allows those who feel unseen to experience belonging. “When I think about being African, queerness, and queer spaces, my mission and goal is to make people feel seen and protected,” she said in a previous interview.

Despite the debates her statement has stirred in Ghana, Amaarae’s global influence remains undiminished. She continues to challenge norms, exploring themes of African identity, womanhood, and sexuality through her music and visuals. For fans worldwide, her honesty stands as a testament to living and creating authentically—without apology.

Amaarae’s announcement is more than a personal revelation; it’s a statement of empowerment, visibility, and the enduring power of authenticity in art.

The festival will kick off with student band Casual Riot before Amaarae takes the main stage. A signature tradition at Princeton, Lawnparties is held twice a year and brings together live music, performances across Prospect Avenue’s eating clubs, food vendors, games, and outdoor festivities.

Amaarae, celebrated for her genre-blending sound that fuses pop, R&B, alté, and Afrobeats, has steadily built global recognition. Born in the Bronx and raised between Accra, Atlanta, and New Jersey, she broke barriers earlier this year as the first Ghanaian artist to perform a solo set at Coachella.

Her August album Black Star racked up over 5 million streams in its opening weeks, further cementing her reputation as one of the most innovative voices in contemporary music. She is widely known for her 2020 breakout single Sad Girlz Luv Money, which went viral globally following a 2021 remix featuring Kali Uchis.

Her selection as headliner marks a new direction for Lawnparties, which has leaned toward rap artists in recent years. By Apple Music’s categorization, Amaarae is the first Afro-Pop artist to lead the event.

Still, her streaming numbers remain modest compared to past headliners. Spring 2024’s act, Lil Tecca, draws over 27 million monthly Spotify listeners, while Amaarae’s audience is smaller. Organizers, however, emphasized that her artistry outweighs the metrics.

“I think everything about Amaarae is visionary,” said Misa Mims ’27, a member of the planning team. “She’s an eclectic artist, and her music is infectious.”

Amaarae’s influence extends beyond music. She has consistently challenged gender norms, using fluid pronouns and inclusive storytelling in her songwriting. For organizers, that perspective adds value to the lineup.

“I’m genuinely thrilled that we’re welcoming Amaarae, a groundbreaking Afrobeat artist, to Princeton this year,” said D’Schon Simmons ’27. “Right now, it’s more important than ever to highlight diverse voices and showcase the richness of Black culture on our campus.”

The announcement came just days before the event — the shortest notice since Fall 2021. Amaarae is scheduled to perform at 3:00 p.m., though past headliners have sometimes taken the stage later.

This semester’s Lawnparties will feature returning food vendors like Nomad, Tico’s, Rita’s, Taco Bell, and Cheesecake on a Stick, along with newcomers such as Alfalfa, Jammin’ Crepes, and Silver Line Wings. Kosher options will also be provided. Students are encouraged to dress in bohemian styles and earth-tone colors.

With her bold artistry and distinctive sound, Amaarae’s performance is expected to be a standout moment — both for this year’s Lawnparties and for Princeton students eager to experience an artist on the rise.

She has consistently pushed the boundaries of sound and identity, with her unique fusion of alternative, pop, R&B, and Afrobeats cementing her place as a singular voice in modern music.

Her musical journey took a turn in a computer lab in Ghana in 2009, where she taught herself to make beats on a cracked version of FL Studio. That moment sparked the fire for a career that would go on to produce game-changing projects like “The Angel You Don’t Know” and global hits such as “SAD GIRLZ LUV MONEY”.

Amaarae’s inclusion on Spotify’s Global Impact List for the first half of the year, highlighting the most-exported Ghanaian songs, was no surprise. She has become a symbol of how African music is travelling further, faster, and louder than ever before.

With her latest album, BLACK STAR, she returns to her Ghanaian roots with bold energy, crafting what she calls a “rallying cry for youth culture around the world. This album is bringing the alternative community to the forefront and being fearless about that.”

“I navigate the music world with balance, willpower, and strength. The challenges are real, don’t get me wrong, but I put my blinders on, lock into tunnel vision, and get to work. And when I come across another woman on the journey, especially a Black woman, I do my best to share knowledge, create opportunities, and lighten the load where I can,” says Amaarae.

Amaarae

As part of Spotify’s EQUAL programme, which amplifies women’s voices worldwide, Amaarae joins a growing list of African women shaping the future through sound and self-expression.

“Amaarae embodies the spirit of boundary-pushing creativity that EQUAL stands for,” says Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa. “Her artistry is bold, distinct, and unapologetically authentic – qualities that continue to inspire a new generation of artists across the continent and beyond.”

We sat down with Amaarae to learn more about her and her music:

1. What is that one surprising thing your fans might not know about you?

Amaarae: I’m one step away from being legally blind! My vision is a -7 and I have astigmatism!!

2. When did you realise that making music was in your destiny and what is your WHY for pursuing this craft?

Amaarae: When I moved back home to Ghana in 2009, I was learning how to make beats and record myself at the back of the computer lab. Someone had installed a cracked version of FL.

3. Which African songs or artists did you grow up listening to?

Amaarae: The list goes on and on. Daddy LUMBA (RIP), Terri Bonchaka, MzBel, Abrewa Nana, Obrafour’s legendary album Pae Mu Ka, Sarkodie, Kwadwo Antwi. I could go all day.

4. To someone who has never heard your music, how would you describe the sound, tone, and style?

Amaarae: Let’s encourage listeners to be curious and adventurous! If you’re reading this and you’ve never heard my music, I dare you to go listen! And tell me how YOU would describe my sound.

5. Any advice for someone dreading following their dreams?

Amaarae: The regret does more damage than the effort.

Amaarae Rewrites the Rules of Pop with Daring Third Album, BLACK STAR

The new project marks a significant departure from her critically acclaimed 2023 release, Fountain Baby, which leaned into introspection and emotional vulnerability. In contrast, BLACK STAR exudes a carefree spirit, as Amaarae embraces fun, fearlessness, and flamboyance over the course of the album’s 13 genre-hopping tracks.

Describing the album herself as a “genesis of me feeling sure and confident,” Amaarae’s newfound sense of self-assurance is the heartbeat of the project. The confidence is evident in her vocal delivery, the eclectic soundscapes, and even the bold choice of collaborators.

From the jump, BLACK STAR asserts itself as a global pop statement, weaving threads of Afrobeats, hyperpop, baile funk, highlife, and electronic music into one coherent tapestry.

A large part of this sonic evolution comes from Amaarae’s collaboration with longtime producer Kyu Steed, with whom she travelled to Brazil to work alongside baile funk producers. The result is a vibrant fusion of West African rhythms with South American pulse and Western pop sensibility.

Unlike the more serious tone of her previous effort, this new album allows Amaarae to embrace her playful side—an energy that radiates through the project’s brisk 44-minute runtime. BLACK STAR feels like an artist letting go, leaning into joy, and redefining what it means to be a Ghanaian global pop star in the modern era.

The feature list is equally audacious, boasting a star-studded mix of musical heavyweights and unexpected names. UK pop innovator PinkPantheress, British rapper Bree Runway, and legendary American R&B vocalist Charlie Wilson all lend their talents.

However, perhaps the biggest surprise is the appearance of supermodel Naomi Campbell, blurring the lines between fashion and music in a move that perfectly matches the album’s rule-breaking ethos.

One standout from the project is the lead single “S.M.O.,” a track that exemplifies the album’s balance between heritage and innovation. Drawing from Ghanaian highlife while incorporating slick modern production, the single offers a window into the project’s ethos: honouring one’s roots without being bound by them.

Ghanaian-American music innovator Amaarae has pulled back the curtain on the official tracklist for her much-anticipated album BLACK STAR, and it’s nothing short of a cultural spectacle. Slated for release this Friday, August 8, 2025, the project is already stirring excitement across music and pop culture spaces.

Far from being a conventional release, BLACK STAR promises a genre-blending journey, laced with bold collaborations that reflect Amaarae’s fearless creative spirit and global vision.

Among the headline-grabbing features is Naomi Campbell, the world-renowned supermodel and cultural icon, who appears on a track titled MS60. While details remain under wraps about the nature of her role—be it narration, vocal cameo, or cinematic interlude her presence alone hints at a daring fusion of music and high fashion.

Another major talking point is Kiss Me Thru the Phone Pt. 2, a futuristic reimagining of Soulja Boy’s 2008 classic, featuring UK alt-pop sensation PinkPantheress. Already pegged as a potential standout, the track fuses nostalgia with cutting-edge production.

The album also sees a collaboration with legendary R&B veteran Charlie Wilson on Dream Scenario, expected to offer a dose of soulful warmth and old-school magic to the project. Fans can also expect genre-pushing energy on Starkilla, featuring UK rap powerhouse Bree Runway and enigmatic production duo Starkillers.

With 13 tracks in total, BLACK STAR stands as Amaarae’s most expansive and experimental offering yet. The newly revealed cover art complements the tracklist, revealing a bold, celestial design that reflects the album’s cosmic and unapologetically Black ethos.

As anticipation builds in the final days before release, BLACK STAR is already being positioned as one of the year’s defining projects. Amaarae’s vision, a blend of Afrofuturism, genre-fluid soundscapes, and cultural audacity, has fans and critics on the edge of their seats.

If the tracklist is any indication, BLACK STAR is not just an album—it’s a movement.

Released as the second preview from her much-anticipated sophomore album BLACK STAR (out August 8 via Interscope Records), the song solidifies Amaarae’s status as a visionary voice in alternative African pop.

Building on the hypnotic vibes of her previous release “S.M.O.” Girlie-Pop! dives deeper into Amaarae’s immersive, genre-defying world, one where Alté, Jersey club rhythms, and syrupy synths collide in a euphoric burst of sound. It’s a glittering ode to longing, lust, and uninhibited self-expression that is unapologetically feminine, richly layered, and emotionally electric.

According to Amaarae, the track was born during an impromptu freestyle over live guitar on an unforgettable night in Brazil. She describes it as a musical translation of “a kiss from your favorite person in the world,” a sonic embodiment of the kind of affection that feels cosmic.

And that energy is undeniable. Girlie-Pop! pulses with dreamy confidence and intimate warmth. It’s flirtatious yet sincere, escapist yet deeply personal, a perfect glimpse into the sonic wonderland that BLACK STAR promises to be: a hyper-stylised celebration of love, nightlife, and liberation.

The accompanying music video, directed by Omar Jones, brings the song’s atmosphere to life with surreal visuals, otherworldly choreography, and a hypnotic aesthetic that mirrors the song’s fantasy-soaked vibe. Visually and sonically, it’s a sensory experience that is immersive, intoxicating, and unforgettable.

American-Ghanaian singer and songwriter Amaarae has offered an intriguing cultural deep dive into Ghana’s long-standing love affair with eggs, a staple in many households across the country.

In a recent sit-down with media personality Madame Joyce, the Sad Girls Love Money star traced the roots of this culinary tradition to family dynamics and economic realities of the past.

According to Amaarae, in earlier generations, meat was a luxury item, often reserved exclusively for the head of the household.

“There’s a whole history to that,” she said. “Back in the days, your father would get the most meat in the food. If your mum cooked stew or anything else, the meat would be for your dad. The kids got a small piece of meat, plus eggs, to balance out their protein.”

She further explained how eggs became the go-to protein source for the rest of the family, affordable, accessible, and rich in nutrients. Over time, this made eggs a cornerstone of Ghanaian meals, especially among the younger members of the household.

“That’s why egg has become a staple in our country,” she added. “It’s a cheap way to get protein if meat is too expensive. Back then, chicken was a Christmas luxury. Now it’s normal.”

Amaarae’s reflections have since stirred discussion online, with many Ghanaians resonating with the generational food experiences she described. Her comments shine a light on how tradition, economic status, and creativity have all shaped the nation’s food culture one egg at a time.

Ghanaian alt-pop and Afrobeats star Amaarae is calling on African musicians to break free from creative comfort zones and push the boundaries of Afrobeats into new territory.

In a recent conversation with media personality Madame Joyce, the Fountain Baby singer voiced her concerns about the genre’s creative direction, emphasizing the need for fearless experimentation.

While acknowledging the global dominance and financial success of Afrobeats, Amaarae argued that this very success might be limiting its evolution.

“Afrobeats needs to evolve in a direction that’s fearless,” she said. “Artists have made so much money from a certain type of sound that they’re afraid to step out of the boundaries.”

She urged fellow African artists to challenge existing norms and embrace sonic risk-taking. “Africans need to get it together and start to experiment,” Amaarae added, making a case for innovation as a tool for long-term relevance and artistic growth.

Her remarks have ignited conversations across social media, with fans and music critics alike debating the genre’s current trajectory. Many agree that while Afrobeats is thriving commercially, it may be time for a creative renaissance that explores new textures, fusions, and narratives.

Amaarae’s call is clear: for Afrobeats to continue thriving, it must also be willing to transform.

“My soul can’t rest until I feel like I’ve made a project that resonates in a really huge way globally,” Amaarae said. “The last frontier is to make both a commercial and critical success.”

For Amaarae, BLACK STAR is more than a collection of tracks; it’s a deliberate exploration of identity, artistry, and heritage. The album’s title is layered with meaning: a reference to her persona, the emblem on Ghana’s national flag, and a nod to the Black cultural lineage that fuels her innovative take on dance music.

“It’s the genesis of me feeling sure and confident in myself as a grown woman, number one, and knowing exactly what my message is,” she explained. “I’m taking my culture and I’m synthesizing it in a way that feels fresh and unique… I wanted to take a genre that needs to go back home to its roots and merge that with my African roots and hip-hop and create a new world.”

Pushing sonic boundaries is nothing new for Amaarae, but BLACK STAR promises to deepen that experimentation, blending electronic, Afropop, and hip-hop through an Afrocentric lens. It’s her effort to rewrite what global pop can sound like, without losing the authenticity of her origins.

The singer also touched on her kinship with American pop star Sabrina Carpenter, pointing to their shared expression of fierce femininity and creative freedom.

“She’s a freak just like me,” Amaarae said with a laugh. “Hers is bright and colorful; mine is dark and edgy. But we’re both saying the same thing: We’re sexual beings, and we are women who feel free and confident in that.”

With BLACK STAR, Amaarae is not just chasing global recognition, she’s redefining the musical and cultural dialogue around what it means to be a Black woman creating from Africa for the world.

As anticipation continues to build, one thing is clear: BLACK STAR is set to be a milestone in Amaarae’s artistic journey and a bold chapter for African alternative music on the global stage.

Ghanaian singer and genre-defying artist Amaarae has opened up about her groundbreaking performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, describing it as a pivotal moment in both her journey and the broader African music movement.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the Fountain Baby star shared how her debut on one of the world’s most iconic stages signalled a dramatic shift in her career trajectory.

“It was a huge turning point,” Amaarae said. “Before, my shows would mainly be, like, young Black kids, young African kids. There’s clearly been a shift here.”

That shift, she explained, has brought a noticeable evolution in her audience, a transformation she sees as reflective of African music’s growing resonance worldwide.

“Now, it’s much more of a global representation and melting point,” she added. “Which brings me a huge sense of pride.”

Her Coachella set wasn’t just another performance; it was a historic milestone. Amaarae became the first Ghanaian female solo act to perform at the celebrated festival, carving a space for African women at the forefront of international music conversations.

Known for her distinctive voice, experimental aesthetic, and fearless approach to sound, Amaarae has steadily built a reputation as one of the most innovative voices in Africa’s alternative music scene.

Her appearance at Coachella was not only a win for her artistry but also a powerful statement on the expanding presence of African women in global pop culture.

By remaining true to her identity and creative instincts, Amaarae continues to break boundaries, proving that African artists don’t need to conform to dominate the world stage. Instead, they can lead with authenticity, vision, and sonic boldness.
