The Tanzanian music industry has some elite and up-and-coming artists, this article will focus solely on the top four musicians Fast-rising in Tanzania.

There are so many who couldn’t stay in the game because it changed and they found themselves out of time and out of touch with the industry. This flexibility is vital in the entertainment industry these days.

On the other hand, new artists are introduced in the industry daily, something that has the old celebs lacking sleep because these new artists are young and have zeal and hunger for success in music that threatens their peace of mind.

Up and coming artists have been picked up by famous musicians and record labels and these new artists never disappoint. In this article, I’m going to introduce you to four up and coming artists who are reigning in the Tanzanian music scene today;

1. Zuhura Othman Soud (Zuchu)

At a young age, Zuhura was successful in entering the Tanzanian music scene, apart from Havard admission and maybe getting a job at Apple, there’s nothing harder than joining the WCB label. Regardless of that, the managers of that record label got to hear her and sign this young woman.

The majority of people thought that she was a bad signee and an addition to the label until she shocked them by gaining more than 100,000 subscribers and being nominated for different awards.

This beautiful young lady who hails from Zanzibar is a daughter of a famous Taarab singer, Khadija Kopa. Right now if you mention Tanzanian music without mentioning her name you will be missing an important musician with songs like Raha, Sukari, and Cheche which she did with her boss Diamond Platnumz, songs that are making waves and are ahead in streams.

2. Ibraah

Like the majority of African artists who go through tough times first then later on succeed, the same happened to this artist who started out as a hawker, which is why even now as a person who has made it, he still calls himself ‘Chinga‘ which is Swahili for a hawker.

He is a famous artist under the label of Konde Gang, under Harmonize. He came into the music scene like a joke, we first heard him on One Night Stand which he did with Harmonize, and then he released Nitachelewa, Nimekubali, and Jipinde which disturbed our radios for a long.

With Ibraah’s hunger for success, he seems like an artist who will last for some time in the industry.

3. Thomas Gration Bishanga (Tommy Flavour)

With his voice and the way he harmonizes behind the mic, this ladies’ man is one of those people whose opportunity came when he was ready to grab it.

Tommy Flavour is under Kings Music Label which is owned by Ali Kiba and he has been his mentor for a long and that’s why if you look at his verse and singing style it is like they are quite similar.

‘Omukwano‘ which featured his boss Ali Kiba made his Tanzania’s favorite, and if it was me, I would have ended my music career there because I would have worried if I could release a song that could outdo Omukwano’s success.

4. Cosmas Paul Mfoy (Rapcha)

‘Naitwa Rapcha, naitwa naniii….’ that’s how he starts his songs, this young artist who was born in 1999 is busy hustling with big artists in the game.

He started out as the majority of artists who start on social media these days when producer P Funky Majani saw one of his clips on Instagram and decided to check him out and now he has a hit song called ‘Lisa‘ which is a very creative story.

Rapcha‘s future in the music industry is brighter just like the majority of the artists who have been discovered through social media.

Hamis Mwinjuma famously known as Mwana FA, whom I love to call a genius since everyone knows how smart he is in the entertainment industry.

He was one of the first rappers in the game who received Tanzanian music from the hands of our forefathers who sang Jazz, Taarab, and Band, he was successful in turning his music from a hobby to a source of income.

He was one of the people who changed our mindset from thinking music is just for gangsters to seeing it as an art that can be a source of income for the youth.

How he has been consistent in the game

He was one of the founders of the 2000s music group called East Coast Team, with other musicians who are still his friends to date like Ambwene Yesaya (AY) and King Crazy GK, he was famously known for his flows even when their group separated.

He was successful in releasing hit songs that gave us different sayings in the street, songs like ‘Unanitega‘, ‘Mabinti‘, ‘Alikufa kwa Ngoma’ which he did with Lady Jaydee who is a music legend herself, and ‘Dakika Moja’ which he did together with his friends AY and Hard Mad. All these songs left a mark in the music industry.

His respect for his work and for people is what keeps him in the game to date, it is not easy to see him in scandals or publicity stunts, I think maybe his age may be a reason but even when he was young he didn’t have any scandals.

It was just his good personality and demeanor that made him live well and in good terms with people. Good work always stays relevant no matter the time, and that’s why if you hear Lucille by Kenny Rogers, it is as if it was released yesterday, Mwana FA’s songs have the same effect in people’s ears.

His songs are like stories and that’s why if you hear he has gone to the studio, you should prepare your ear, notebook, and open to listen to his lecture that he drops in the song.

Songs like ‘Mfalme‘ which he did with G Nako and ‘We endelea tu’ are some of the songs that when they are played, you as an artist have to postpone releasing your songs because the attention of Tanzanian listeners is focused on Mwana FA. ‘Mfalme’ for example is a ghetto gospel, he touched the souls of people while thanking God.

Are we losing him in the game recently?

Every prophet has his own time, and artists retire too, but Mwana FA is someone who never changes his style even when a lot of rappers did.

In a season when rappers changed, Mwana FA released ‘Kiboko Yangu‘ with his friend Ali Kiba, so maybe that is what is limiting him from getting ahead in the game?

He is someone who doesn’t boast, even when you watch his interviews he is just someone who spits knowledge.

He campaigned and was elected as the MP of Muheza last year in October, so is that a driving force to his music taking the backseat? I don’t know, I have a feeling he will prove us wrong by releasing another hit song.

About the album

It has a good flow from the King, and he has never disappointed his fans. When he is behind the mic, we all know we got to dance as he is dropping his poems effortlessly which is different from other artists who spend most of their lyrics praising their girlfriend’s body parts, their properties, and showing their lovemaking skills but in Ali Kiba’s album, all 16 of his songs are made for people of all ages, he cared about ethics and quality of contents in his writing.

The album was released on the 7th of October 2021, without any promo or publicity stunt and in a short time it was the talk of the town, and everyone was expectant on what will happen next but his listening party was a beautiful evening event at Serena Hotel that he did with few of his musicians’ friends including Patoranking from Nigeria.

Only One King has 16 songs. 10 of which he has featured artists from Tanzania and out of Tanzania like Sarkodie from Ghana, Patoranking, Mayorkun and Rudeboy from Nigeria, Khaligraph Jones, Nyanshiski and Sauti Sol from Kenya.

From Tanzania, he collaborated with Tommy Flavor and Kings Music. If you look at the names featured, you will be able to guess the quality of the songs that are in this album.

Speaking of Patoranking, in ‘Bwana Mdogo‘, he has left a conversation in Tanzania, where others say he has murdered the song more than Ali Kiba and others say they both bought quality to the song.

Rudeboy, a guy with songs like ‘Chizoba‘ and ‘Reason with Me’, understood the assignment in Salute and their video was the talk of the town as they wore military attire.

Sarkodie, a rapper who has no mercy on beats, delivered his verses on ‘Happy‘.

Nyanshiski from 254, is one of those artists who has no problem with single ng better than the owner of the song when he is featured, and that’s what he did in the song.

This time Ali Kiba decided to enter the studio himself, and one of his songs ‘Utu’ has been making waves and it is even trending on TikTok and it has even been a song that lovers dedicate to each other.

Other songs in the album are Gime Dat, Oya Oya, Amour, Sitaki tena, and Infidele.

The producer, Yogo Beats got so much promo out of this album because most of the songs in the album were produced by him.

It is undeniable that when you mention bangers in the African music industry without mentioning some from Tanzania, you will be talking about something else, not music since in 2021 alone Tanzania gave the world so many hits, in this piece I’m gonna share the top ten hits that Tanzanian artists gave the world;

1. Zuchu -Sukari

At such a young age, Zuchu got an opportunity that a lot of musicians in Tanzania think is a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity, she joined Wasafi Classic Baby Label (WCB).

Zuchu being among the two female artists from that label had the hunger to show Tanzanians and the world what she has. This year has made us dance and sing along with her hit song ‘Sukari’ which has garnered so many views on YouTube and is frequently played on radios and left and right in ceremonies.

2. Harmonize ft H Baba & Awilo Longomba – Attitude

Famously known as Tembo or Kondeboy, this year he brought us this Sebene song featuring Awilo Longomba, the music legend from Congo. You will feel lacking in nightclubs if this song is not played.

The uniqueness in dancing styles and attire in the music video is what helped this song gain massive airwaves.

3. ALIKIBA Ft Kings Music – Ndombolo

With his own children that he signed under Kings Music, like Kituga and Abdu Kiba (who is his young brother), the king of vocals gave us this danceable hit.

Up to this day, it is the most-watched song on YouTube with millions of views.

5. Barnaba ft ALIKIBA – Cheketua

Barnaba who is a writer and a music nerd who has a unique melody in his songs decided to feature AliKiba in this song that celebrates weddings and marriage in general. And that’s why it doesn’t come as a shock when in their videos they are seen in black and white suits like penguins.

Before the release of the song, we thought Barnaba was getting married again because the pictures from the video shoot were spread before the release of the video, maybe it was their publicity stunt gaining traction.

6. Marioo – For you

We were so used to his heartbreak and lamenting songs, and so this year he really shocked us when he released a love song.

It seems like there is a gurl who has captured his heart to the extent he has forgotten the heartbreak he faced in ‘Inatosha’ and ‘Unanionea’.

‘For You’ is a song that is in every top ten and top twenty on radios. To the extent that today if you don’t mention Mario in any top ten music list in Tanzania, then you are clueless about the Tanzanian music industry.

I could have been shocked if Simba wasn’t gonna roar the whole year in the jungle, it could have been unfair to his fans who love good music.

Musically his 2020 was different from this year but he still gave us the best hit song in ‘Naanzaje‘.

If you just hear this banger once, you will dream about it for weeks to come, that’s how good it is.

8. Maua Sama – Zai

Maua has been breaking her own records since she started her music career, it’s like she only compares and competes with who she was yesterday.

She gave us a national anthem with her song ‘Iokote’ and this year she has left our jaws wide open as we move to ‘Zai’.

9. Anjela – Nobody

She is the first female artist to be signed under Konde Gang, and she has tried to show us how talent in music.

It is not easy for the first song an artist releases to be a hit song but it has been different for Anjela, ‘No body’ has been a song that hit the nail. Many predicted her fall but she is still in the race and going big.

10. Nandy – Naanzaje

She calls herself African Princess, and Tanzania got to know her in 2016 with her unique voice and beauty. From Tanzania House of Talent (THT) under Ruge Mutahaba who was the mastermind in the music industry.

Her first song was ‘Nagusagusa‘ but in 2021 ‘Naanzaje’ has forever marked her as the only African princess in the music industry.

Kenyan artists have never disappointed me musically, but there is always the best in every competition and if these great artists were in a musical marathon the following 10 Kenyan artists would have won the race in 2021.

10. Nviiri The Storyteller – Kitenge

This star who made everyone turn to him due to his song ‘Pombe Sigara’ can also agree that this year was bliss for him.

We felt he would stop at his ‘Extravaganza’ collaboration or perhaps let us breathe after ‘Bar’ he did with Femi one.

But this man said none of you is ready for me, before releasing ‘Kitenge’ earlier this year which has almost a million views on YouTube. He was right; none of us was ready.

9. Khaligraph Jones ft. The industry – Luku

Brian Robert Ouko famous as Khaligraph Jones is a talented rapper in East Africa. What makes this man stand out is his massive ability to maintain the same energy in the music industry.

This year was no exception when he blessed us with ‘Luku’. Luku is the system of subscribing electrical power units in accordance with the money and use.

Hip-hop is full of metaphors and that’s exactly what Khaligraph Jones has done in this song. It’s seven minutes long so believe me when I say the man has content. Join the 1.3 viewers on YouTube and have blast.

8. Bahati feat. Sat-B – Sweet darling

This is one of the few artists whose talent is not limited by the type of music. Be it gospel or R&B; Bahati your man.

The song ‘Nikumbushe’ he sang with a Tanzania artist Rayvanny about asking God to remind him where he is from in case he gets arrogant, made me rethink if we have the same creator for voices.

This year about four months ago he did it again and blessed us with ‘sweet darling’ and can make you in love the first time you hear it. I with more than 2 million other viewers did in fact fall in love; with the song of course.

7. Nikita Kering’ – EX

This 19-year-old princess has managed to drop all our jaws with her amazing, singing and songwriting talent.

You heard me right, she’s just 19. Don’t ask me what I was doing when I was at that age! It’s no surprise she has been nominated for 3 Afrima awards as a best female artist in Eastern Africa, songwriter of the year, and best artist, best artist duo, or group.

Voting begins tomorrow On the 19th so you know what to do. She deserves this. The lyrics and the singing of the song ‘Ex’ are just sick!

6. Nadia Mukami ft. Otile Brown – Kolo

This songwriter and great singer has stood out among the few Kenyan female artists. She did great on the song ‘We ni Nani‘ featuring the legend Sanapei Tande, this song got her deals and media tours locally and internationally.

However, ‘Kolo’ is a whole new other level and the collaboration with Otile is just everything.

It’s no surprise it has hit almost 5 million views. Kolo is a street slang meaning someone who is senseless. So who is the Kolo in her song, what did the Kolo do? Listen to this marvelous song and tell me what you think.

5. H_art the Band – My jabber feat. Brizy Annechild

2020 will always be a memorable one worldwide. For us Kenyans, it’s due to two reasons the COVID-19 and the song ‘El-Shaddai’.

My interest in the band multiplied then, the song became as popular as the national anthem and it got every credit it got. It was one of the songs that you know have hit the peak and they could only go downhill from there.

The devil works but the H_art Band works harder because ‘My jabber’ is definitely the masterpiece people don’t talk about enough. They deserve more than the 4.7million views they currently have on YouTube.

4. Mejja – Siskii

Mejja is one of the few artists that have managed to stay constant for a very long time.

Have you ever loved someone to the point you are just rigid to any advice? ‘Siskii’ means “I’m not listening” and if you’ve been at a point where you listen to one this song is for you.

Mejja is the king of relatable if you ask me because if you listen to the track ‘Tabia za Wakenya’ he literally outed every Kenyan out there. Big up Mejja!

3. Bensoul – Nairobi

This is the type of song that you listen to the audio and it’s so good and then you watch the video and understand why it got over 6.5 million views.

Bensoul succeeded in making all of Kenyans sing the song ‘Nairobi’ that he released just at the beginning of this year, the new year’s gift.

Perhaps it’s because many people relate to it since it speaks of scenarios where a guy sends transport fare but the lady doesn’t show up or you send money to the love of your life and they send it to theirs.

One of the funny tragedies of life if you ask me. The collaboration with Sauti Sol, Nviiri the storyteller, and Mejja just made the piece mind-blowing.

2. Otile brown ft. Alikiba – In love

These two musical gods left everyone speechless after the release of this jaw-dropping song with about nine million views on Youtube.

This masterpiece ‘In love’ has been on multiple video and radio charts for months. The only debate is who killed it better. Is it the king from the land of Nyerere; Alikiba or Legendary Otile the multi-award and multitalented singer from +254?

It’s like having Messi and CR7 in one team. I wouldn’t want to be on the other team.

First, we know Willy Paul has never disappointed us in all the collaborations he did with the ladies from Alaine (Kenyan), Nandy (Tanzanian), and this year it was Miss p who literally sounds like a bird.

It was hard to decide which collaboration was their best because both fall in love and Liar but liar has got more positive feedback from the public with almost 10million views so Liar wins.

Contrary to other artists who are making art in these times that are saturated with scandals that are been boosted by social media and all these other digital platforms, the King of Bongo Flava, has been in the industry for so long before social media and to this day he is still strong in the game. All this time the King didn’t have an introduction nor scandal, his voice behind the microphone was enough to secure his place on the throne.

It’s very rare to see bad things said about him in newspapers, he is an artist with ethics and discipline, well it’s either that or he has successfully separated his music life from his personal life.

With his voice and his ability to steal hearts, he was able to successfully make music one of the prominent works for youths. ALIKIBA

If you talk about East African Music without mentioning the name AliKiba, it would be apparent that you have disrespected the entire Bongo Flava Kingdom because his unique melody and lyrics earned him the title of Mfalme (King).

The way that he moves his voice as he pleases behind a mic is probably the only thing he knew how to do when he was born. You would rarely miss him in a playlist of anyone who knows good music.

His music has had the same vibe since the first time he started recording tomorrow. He is well known for his “Arrogance in Music” that is even if the trend changes, you would still want to listen to him singing in his usual style.

While many Tanzanian artists decided to infuse their music with Western African sounds particularly Nigerian, he released his songs Aje and Kadogo which carried his usual melodic sound.

Even when he leaves the music scene for a while, he comes back to find his throne full of dust as it lay empty because no one can take his place.

While many artists were avoiding live performances, Ali has thrived in that category. His life outside of music is very normal and he gets along with everyone, you might even call him “Bongo Flavor’s Keanu Reeves”.
