The 52-year-old singer and producer, born Aliaune Thiam, was reportedly arrested by Chamblee Police on the morning of November 7 after officers discovered an outstanding warrant in his name.

According to reports from TMZ and local authorities, the Locked Up crooner was taken into custody, processed at DeKalb County Jail, and released just a few hours later.

Jail records confirm that Akon was booked and released the same day. His mugshot, which surfaced online, shows him dressed in a black hoodie, wearing a calm, almost stoic expression.

The situation reportedly stems from an earlier bench warrant issued in Roswell, Georgia, tied to a case involving a suspended driver’s license. Court documents reveal that the issue dates back to September, when Akon’s Tesla Cybertruck broke down on the road after a battery failure.

When police arrived to assist, they discovered his license had been suspended due to a missed court appearance for a separate incident in January 2023.

At the time, he was cited for driving with a suspended license and briefly detained. Authorities also noted finding what they described as an “illegal vape” in the vehicle.

Though Akon was released, a warrant was later issued after he failed to appear in court for the citation, resulting in his November 7 arrest.

Fortunately, the ordeal was short-lived. Akon was released within six hours, and as of now, neither he nor his representatives have issued an official statement about the matter.

Veteran Nigerian music producer and industry executive Olumide Ogunade, widely known as ID Cabasa, has publicly challenged Akon’s recent assertion that he played a foundational role in creating Afrobeats.

Akon, the Senegalese-American singer and music mogul, made headlines after an interview on The Sherri Shepherd Show where he claimed to be instrumental in pushing Afrobeats to the global stage during the late 2000s.

According to him, his early partnerships with Nigerian artists and executives catalysed the genre’s international breakout.

He specifically mentioned signing Wizkid as the first Nigerian act under his label and collaborating with Banky W, suggesting that these moves were pivotal to the evolution of Afrobeats as we know it today.

However, in a recent conversation on Wazobia FM, ID Cabasa pushed back, questioning Akon’s narrative. He acknowledged that Akon did collaborate with Nigerian talents during the genre’s formative years but argued that this involvement doesn’t entitle him to claim authorship of the movement.

Cabasa emphasized that before Akon’s entry into the Nigerian music scene, homegrown stars like 2Face Idibia, 9ice, and Timaya were already making waves and laying the groundwork for what would become the Afrobeats explosion.

He also took issue with Akon’s remarks about Wizkid, countering the claim that Akon “groomed” the young artist. Cabasa clarified that it was Banky W who discovered Wizkid and signed him to Empire Mates Entertainment (EME), which later entered a collaborative partnership with Akon’s label—contrary to Akon’s claim of being the sole catalyst.

Speaking candidly in Pidgin English, ID Cabasa said, “If Akon wan talk say na him discover Afrobeats, e for still talk say na him find 2Face, Timaya, 9ice and all. Na people wey he meet for here tell am say dem big pass. So he just dey feel say na him pioneer Afrobeats business and branding.”

He concluded by stressing that Afrobeats wasn’t the product of any one individual. “Afrobeats no be one person work. E no be invention; na culture,” he said.

According to Akon, his Konvict Muzik label was instrumental in refining Wizkid’s artistry and expanding his reach beyond Nigeria.

He also mentioned signing the iconic duo P-Square, whom he credits as the first Nigerian group to break into the international music scene under his guidance.

“In 2008, I was in Nigeria building what you now recognize as Afrobeats,” Akon stated. “Wizkid was the first Nigerian artist we officially signed. He was just a local star until we stepped in and helped open doors to a global market.”

Akon emphasized that his involvement introduced the essential business infrastructure that the Nigerian music industry lacked at the time. “They had the creativity, but not the business side. No structure, no system. I brought that in,” he said, asserting that without his early efforts, Afrobeats might not have achieved its current worldwide acclaim.

According to May D, P-Square didn’t attempt to sign him to their Square Records label until 2011 after he featured on their hit single ‘Chop My Money.‘ Despite this opportunity, negotiations fell apart when he requested clarifications regarding compensation for his previous contributions and matters related to his accommodations.

May D recounted that following his refusal to sign the contract with Square Records, he was asked to leave P-Square’s mansion. He later established his label, Confam Records. Despite the fallout, May D described P-Square as “amazing people” and maintained a favourable view of the duo.

During the podcast, May D disclosed that after meeting Akon during the video shoot for the “Chop My Money (Remix),” the international star expressed interest in signing him. However, he alleged that the contract offered by P-Square at the time ultimately prevented him from pursuing the deal with Akon.

Popular Nigerian singer May D has shared how he missed a major opportunity to work with American superstar Akon after informing P-Square about the development.

The revelation came during an appearance on the podcast ‘Honest Bunch‘ with Nedu Wazobia and other hosts.

According to May D, P-Square initially had no plans to sign him, only offering to help him gain recognition, similar to their efforts with artists like Jay Martins. However, his song ‘Chop My Money‘ caught Akon’s attention, and the American singer expressed interest in featuring in the track.

May D explained that Akon insisted the music video for the song be shot in the United States, prompting him to fly there.

During his visit, Akon invited him to his office and asked if he had any formal agreement with PSquare.

Upon learning that May D had no binding deal, Akon revealed that he had multiple opportunities lined up for him and even promised to cover his ticket back to the U.S. to begin the projects.

The singer admitted that out of transparency, he informed PSquare about Akon’s offers. However, looking back, he regrets the decision. “If I had known, I wouldn’t have said anything to PSquare,” he stated during the podcast.
