Nigeria’s music dominance once again took centre stage on Sunday night as the 9th edition of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) lit up the Eko Convention Centre, Lagos.

Hosted by rapper and actor Falz, the ceremony brought together Africa’s biggest stars for a night that celebrated sound, culture and continental excellence.

Stealing the spotlight was Rema, whose name echoed repeatedly through the hall after he emerged as one of the biggest winners of the evening.

The Afrobeats superstar clinched three major awards, underlining his growing influence across Africa and beyond. Rema was crowned Artiste of the Year, Best Male Artist in Western Africa, and Best African Artistin R&B and Soul, a clean sweep that set the tone for the night.

While Rema dominated individual honours, Burna Boy walked away with one of the ceremony’s most coveted prizes. The Grammy-winning star won Album of the Year for No Sign of Weakness, further cementing his status as one of Africa’s most consistent global exports.

Burna Boy also shared another moment of triumph through collaboration, picking up Best African Collaboration alongside Shallipopi.

Shallipopi had a memorable night of his own, adding Song of the Year to his growing list of accolades with his viral hit Laho. His wins reflected the increasing influence of street-pop sounds on the African music landscape.

Veteran rapper Phyno continued to represent African hip-hop proudly after winning Best African Artiste in African Hip-Hop. At the same time, Yemi Alade showcased her versatility by securing Best Soundtrack in a Movie, Series, or Documentary for her song You Are, featured in the animated series Iyanu.

The future of African music was also well represented. Rising star Qing Madi was named Most Promising Artist of the Year, edging out a competitive list of nominees including Cysoul, Joshua Baraka, King Luca, L’Oiseau Rare, Lwah Ndlunkulu, Massamba Amadeus, Rym, Kunmie, and Fola. Meanwhile, fast-rising singer Chella earned the crowd’s love after emerging African Fans’ Favourite.

Other Nigerian acts who recorded wins on the night include Yemi Alade, Qing Madi, Phyno and Chella, reinforcing Nigeria’s strong presence at the pan-African awards ceremony.

With electrifying performances, emotional acceptance speeches and a celebration of Africa’s diverse sounds, AFRIMA 2025 once again lived up to its reputation.

The Lagos-hosted ceremony not only honoured chart-toppers and rising stars but also told a bigger story — one of Africa’s music industry continuing to grow louder, bolder and more influential on the global stage.

The countdown to the 2025 edition of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) has officially begun, with this year’s competition tipped to be one of the fiercest in the history of the continental showcase.

On Wednesday, August 27, the International Committee of AFRIMA, in partnership with the African Union Commission, released the nominees’ list, spotlighting African music heavyweights and rising stars across the continent.

Global Afrobeats icons Davido and Burna Boy will face off against Congolese legend Fally Ipupa, Moroccan hitmaker El Grande Toto, South African DJ Maphorisa, and Egyptian superstar Amr Diab. They will also compete with a fresh wave of emerging acts including Shallipopi, Himra, Moliy, Ayra Starr, Tanzanian crooner Juma Jux, and Senegal’s Mia Guissé.

Organizers revealed that AFRIMA 2025 received a record-breaking 10,717 submissions, the highest in its 12-year history. After 10 days of rigorous screening, a 13-member jury trimmed the entries down to 343 nominees spread across 40 categories, representing Africa’s regions and its diaspora.

Speaking on the unveiling, AFRIMA jury member Delani Makhalima hailed the growth of African music: “For years our voices were not heard, but today African music is global. This is AFRIMA, the biggest music entity on the continent.”

The 2025 awards ceremony is scheduled to hold in Lagos from November 25 to 30. The week-long programme will feature signature events such as the AFRIMA Music Village, the Africa Music Business Summit, the Nominees Party, and will climax with the grand finale on November 30.

The prestigious awards night will be broadcast live to audiences in more than 84 countries.

AFRIMA has conveyed its deep sorrow following the tragic passing of the Nigerian street-hop sensation Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba.

The All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) have underscored the urgent need for regulating and formalizing the music entertainment sector. AFRIMA joins countless African youths and music enthusiasts in mourning the loss of Nigeria’s beloved singer, Mohbad.

Mohbad’s untimely demise on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, has triggered a profound response from the public. At just 27 years old, this budding music star, also known as Imole (Light), showcased remarkable talent and creativity. His captivating lyrics warmed the hearts of millions of fans worldwide.

In a statement, Mike Dada, the President and Executive Producer of AFRIMA lamented Africa’s loss of a promising talent within its rapidly expanding music industry, underscoring the pressing need for institutionalizing the music and entertainment sectors. This move aims to address the unprofessional practices that have persisted within the industry across Africa.

AFRIMA’s concerns resonate with the growing demand for justice in the wake of the late musician’s passing, which has raised suspicions of possible foul play. The Nigerian Police are actively conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s tragic death, and the public eagerly awaits the results.

In addition to the ongoing investigation, musicians and celebrities, both in Nigeria and on the international stage, have paid heartfelt tributes to the late street-hop sensation. Prominent figures such as Kodak Black, Lil Durk, and Meek Mill have all extended their condolences and recognition to Mohbad, whose music has experienced a resurgence on streaming platforms in Nigeria.

Recall, some people on social media petitioned the award organizers to remove Brymo from their list of nominees after he launched an attack against Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and claimed that an Igbo presidency would be a “pipe dream” due to the push for Biafra.

He tweeted:

As long as there (are) talks by prominent people from Igboland about Biafra, an Igbo presidency will be a pipe dream,

Brymo rendered an apology to the public after about 47,000 had signed the petition to be removed from the award list, but they ultimately lost the honours to Mali-based Iba One.

The sonic artist stated in a Cable interview that he intended to win the award before the petition became public. He continued by saying that a multitude of things led to his defeat rather than the Southeast uproar.

He also declared his retirement from the music industry, making him ineligible for the award.

In his words;

In line with its philosophy and character as an impact-driven social initiative, the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) (AFRIMA.org) has lent its voice to the lingering humanitarian crisis in the war-torn African country of Somalia.

The 62-year-old democratic nation, which lies in the Horn of Africa, has been encumbered with civil wars and security challenges for the past there decades, throwing its most vulnerable populations, especially
women and young girls into a nightmare of untold hardship.

Partnering the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in its advocacy and humanitarian efforts, AFRIMA has urged political stakeholders and people of influence to shower support towards the UNFPA’s aid efforts
in Somalia.

As the much-anticipated 8th AFRIMA, tagged ‘Teranga Edition’ draws near, AFRIMA has launched the #HopeForSomalia campaign, which includes championing policy-stimulating petitions and fostering fundraisers, to help alleviate the harsh impact of the crisis on Somalians, especially Somali women and young girls. The Teranga Edition is scheduled to be held in Dakar, Senegal on 12-15 January 2023.

Commenting on the situation, AFRIMA’s Executive Producer/President, Mr Mike Dada, said: “Like the situation in Somalia, a popular narrative about Africa is that it is a war-torn habitat, without any hope for sustainable peace in sight. It’s saddening; because the danger of that narrative is that it discourages actual solutions. Somalia has enjoyed peace for years and even bears a reputation for being one of Africa’s most pro-democratic societies. We cannot watch and fold our arms, seeing innocent women, children, and Somalis alike have their lives and dreams
cut short by the conflict, terrorism or this climate crisis, without any form of aid or relief.

“In AFRIMA, we abide by the ethos of family. We are one Africa, and whatever burdens Somalia should burden the rest of the continent. We are committed to ensuring that we help contribute to the long-awaited peace-restoration, famine prevention and drought- rehabilitation efforts in Somalia. We thank our partners the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), for their great work in Somalia, and for calling our attention to this. It is especially shocking to see how great these women and girls are suffering, and how high the maternal mortality rate is as a ripple effect of this war. We believe Africa will return to its position as a culturally progressive, innovative and peace-loving continent, once again.”

Commenting on the development, UNFPA Representative in Somalia, Niyi Ojuolape, said that women and girls are the most hit by the crisis, urging for support to end the gory situation, and to ameliorate the impact. He said, “Somalia is facing a complex and devastating crisis.

The country has one of the highest maternal mortality ratios in the world. Conflict and drought-led displacements are adding to the strain on the already limited sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services and weak health system.

Lack of nutrition and access to healthcare contribute to the poor health of women and girls. Pregnant and lactating women, in particular, are at risk due to the negative effects of malnutrition on pregnancy outcomes and newborn survival.

“Over 82% of those displaced are women and children, including 1.95 million women and girls of reproductive age. In the next three months, it is estimated that there will be 918 deliveries per day, with 15% of pregnant women experiencing complications. Without access to qualified birth attendants, health services and facilities, maternal and newborn mortality will increase further.

“Rising food prices, water shortages, death of livestock, and loss of livelihoods have led to multiple displacements, making women and girls more vulnerable to increased gender-based violence (GBV) and exploitation. Data shows a 21% increase in reported rape cases, a 60% increase in reported cases of intimate partner violence, and a 20% increase in the number of women and girls accessing lifesaving GBV response services since last year.”

Ojuolape also pleaded with the international donor community to “urgently prioritise the support of quality SRH services and GBV prevention and response to help prevent death, disease, and disability for women and girls in Somalia.” to help achieve long-term development and peace in Somalia.

In partnership with the African Union Commission, AFRIMA is the pinnacle of African music globally.
