Non-hardcore fans would remember Oritse Femi from the days of his hit Music, “Double Wahala” which shot him to the limelight.

Born Oritsefemi Majemite Ekele, the singer hails from Itsekiri in Warri North L.G.A of Delta State.

His music career started off professionally as the lead vocalist of a Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Ajegunle, Lagos where he also played the bass guitar.

His greatest artistic opportunity occurred when Jamaican dancehall singers Shaba Ranks, Keppy Ton, and others arrived to Ajegunle to create a Ragga Dub School. They were brought there by the late Johnny Nap.

The music school also boast of breeding future reggae sensations of the 90s like Daddy Showkey, Daddy Fresh, Father U-turn, Baba Fryo and a lot of other stars.

He started out with a duo group called Junglist which included his friend Chibudo with two albums “BOYS DEY BINU and MONEY NA TIME’.

However, after an undisclosed conflict with his partner in 2006, he went solo.

While both artists attempted to launch solo careers, only Oritse Femi was able to get off to a flying start after the release of “Elewon” and “Flog Politician,” which quickly won him over the hearts of Ajegunle youths and music fans, as well as the later release of the classic “Flog Politician” album.

In 2014, Oritse Femi stormed the industry with “Double Wahala” which blew his career to the mainstream audiences and earned him massive airplays.

The song is a remake of Fela’s iconic 1990 song “Confusion Break Bone.”

While Fela’s version is the usual long music housing the fusion of instruments like drums and saxophone to create his special blend of Afrobeat, Oritse Femi’s version was more of pop sound but with elements of Afrobeat.

The song was the rocket that launched him to a wider audience and was one of 2014’s biggest songs. In that same year, he dropped a remix featuring D’banj on it.

The remix however wasn’t as popular as its original.

While Oritse Femi has been a rep on the street thanks to his earlier songs, he was however a favourite in the Music industry thanks to this song.

To this date, “Double Wahala” is Oritse Femi’s biggest and best work. The song was inspired by his experience in the slums while growing up.

His Sound and street appeal

Why Oritse Femi’s relevancy can’t diminish in the Nigerian Music Industry.

The streets of Lagos has been a foundation for many of Nigerian greatest stars to date. No matter the style or genre of music an artist does, if it is accepted on the streets, the artist is sure to reach mainstream success in no time.

Oritse Femi grew up in Ajegunle, a locality that has been home to many of Nigeria’s biggest stars at some point.

After his separation from his music partner, Chibudo later known as Chi-Junglist, Oritse Femi found fame with the release of songs like “Elewon” a socially conscious song about the oil pollution affecting Nigeria.

“Elewon” had that distinct fused vibe of Daddy Showkey and African China, two music stars who were also socially conscious singers.

Another of his song that was a favourite on the streets was his brazen “Flog Politician.” On this song, Oritse Femi is bold about his opinions on how corrupt politicians should be treated.

Advising listeners to flog politicians with Koboko-a popular instrument used to discipline errant people- the singer doesn’t hold back in calling out the leadership of the country for their corrupt ways.

Prior to his song, ‘Double Wahala” becoming popular, Oritse Femi had also dominated streets with the inspiring “Mercies of the Lord”

The song was a hit that he had to feature the late Dagrin and Rhymzo on the remix but it became popular in 2014 when he released it as part of a project.

In 2014, he featured rapper, Vector on the remix of the prayerful and inspiring song, “Better” which was also a hit alongside “Double Wahala”

That same year, he released the Afropop “Sexy ladies” which featured Davido. Unlike his earlier songs, this song was more love-themed proving that Oritse Femi could also be a loverboy when he wants to be.

Another love-themed song that ruled the airwaves was “Igbeyawo” which was popular in wedding events at the time of its release.

That same 2016 was when fans also got to listen to his street anthem, “Awooo Ewaa.”

Conclusion

Oritse Femi might not have any trending hits as of the moment but he is still a respected figure on the streets. The singer found and carved a niche for him, growing even despite the scandals that have plagued him in recent years.

Here are 5 beautiful songs you should listen to on Democracy day.

Timi Dakolo- One Nation

Timi Dakolo- Great Nation

Timi Dakolo’s best song, arguably, and with his outstanding discography, that is saying a lot. The lyrics describe how peace, unity, and justice can be used to make a wonderful nation.

In this uplifting and testosterone-spiking song, Timi Dakolo invokes emotion, belief, pride, and dignity as he extols the majesty, abundance, and resilience of the country and its citizens, imagining a world where there is hope for us.

Funmi Adams- Nigeria My Beloved Country

Funmi Adams‘ masterpiece, arguably the best song on our list, gives pure nostalgia and joy to every listener. It discusses Nigerian unity and what it means to be a true Nigerian.

This is one of those songs that is timeless, never fades and flows from one generation to another. It’s a classic love song that has arguably influenced Nigerian love songs that came after it. There is hardly any Nigerian that doesn’t know the chorus to this love song.

The three (3) notable generations of afrobeat are The Fela’s, The D’banj/2Baba/Psquare’s and The Wizkid/Davido/Burna Boy’s generations.

Each of the generations plays important role in the growth and globalization of the afrobeat movement, from the pioneer to the record-breaking new generations.

The Fela’s (1960s-1990s)

Afrobeat was originated in Ghana in the early 1920s Before Nigeria joined the wave in the late 1960s, pioneered by Fela Kuti who explored different fashionable music at the time, he was at the forefront of the genre, popularizing the style both within and outside Nigeria.

What is an album? Albums are the compilation of recorded tracks, supplied as a unit on any digital means, such as CD, Data, and other electronic devices, in the Nigerian music industry, album culture has been a thing.

Album culture is simply the traditional style of how an artist publishes their records to the audience, at a given pace, depending on their personal or managerial preference, Artiste either publish Singles or Albums,

Note! Albums are not just a bunch of irregular tracks and/or perhaps a random“hits songs” collection, rather a sonically coordinated piece with a directed theme, a smooth album must have a unique flow, sounds, and arrangement, in this context; a unique sound doesn’t connote monotonous sound, it simply the connection from instrumentals to balance the chord, harmonizing from the intro to the outro of a project.

At the early stage between the 2000s and 2010s, the industry literally embraced the album culture, producing sonically cohesive projects at various random.

This was the case in the early 2000s to late 2000s with artists like African China, Danfo Drivers (Moutain Black & Late Mad Melon), Olu Maintain, 2Baba, Timaya, Faze, Rooftop MCs, 9ice, P-Square, D’banj, Lagbaja, Mode 9, Banky W, Omawunmi, Wande Coal, Flavour, Edris, Eldee, Jazzman, all embracing the album culture.

In the early 2010’s artists like Duncan Mighty, Wizkid, Olamide, Burna Boy, Phyno followed suits with the traditional style.

Single’s style of record publishing in the Nigerian music industry gradually became a thing during the CDs to electronic medium evolution, around the first quarter of the last decade, with Tekno leading the movement.

However, an artiste may wake up and decide to share his work, or officially announce a released date for a single, even without making it a promotional
copy of any forthcoming project.

Mainstream artists that dominated with singles include Tekno, Runtown, and Davido partially. Tekno‘s debut album was released in 2020, almost 6 to 7years after gaining prominence. At the time of his entrance into the music scene he released about 10 hit singles, the reason is best known to him or his management.

Runtown, on the other hand, wasn’t an album artiste basically, Having released his first album in 2015, his next project was released in 2020.

Davido was also known for his singles regardless of his debut project, reasons were because most of his records did well independently as a single and not as a whole, for example, Dami Duro, IF, Fall were all singles from his album that made serious wave independently, he broke the jinx with back to back release of two projects ‘A Good Time‘ and ‘A Better Time‘ in a consecutive year (2019/2020).

The second half of the last decade was dominated by single releases, such as songs like Pana by Tekno, Mad over you by Runtown, If, Fall, Fia by Davido, Manya by Wizkid, Wo by Olamide, and so on.
It became a norm and trendy that made releasing an album looks like time-wasting to up and coming artists,

In 2019/2020 was a revolution for the Nigerian music industry, all the artists stormed the scene with projects, artists like Burna Boy, Davido, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Tekno, Olamide, Phyno, Flavour, Timaya, Runtown, Yemi Alade, Fireboy, Brymo, Patoranking, 2baba, L.A.X, Moelogo, Rekaado Banks dropped a project (EPs and Albums), embracing the album culture wave.

It was indeed a cultural reset for the industry which yielded and encouraged the up-and-coming artists to start thinking about publishing projects.

Albums or EPs dish out the depth of a creative project, it touches every part and shows the full artistic prowess of a musician.

#EndSars Protest isn’t new but this is by far the biggest turnout Nigeria jas experienced. What started as a small group of protesters in Lagos have spread to almost the 36 states in the country.

These protests have seen the common man take the center stage for the first time and politicians being ridiculed for their inability to deliver on their promise.

However, a protest isn’t complete with music which the Nigerian Music Industry hasn’t failed to deliver on.

The Industry has produced a lot of good music which includes socially conscious songs that address the issue that fueled the protest in the first place so it’s only expectant that people would visit these songs to encourage their spirit.

So here are the top 5 songs that are favorites on protest grounds.

Burna Boy – Monsters You Made

Burna Boy might have foreseen what was coming when he made “Monsters You Made”. The song which the lead single off his recent “Twice as Tall” album, is a reflection of the protest.

The song details the effect of bad Governance not just on a nation but on the people the leaders failed to help. Protesters are now the thorn on the neck of the Government but alas we are the monsters they made.

Fela Kuti – Zombie

Fela was no stranger to Police Brutality as he experienced first hand the extent to which the system was rotten. He also didn’t shy away from making songs about.

Zombie is a classic example of the rotten system of Securities agencies. Just like some of the songs on this list, the song was made more than a decade ago but still relevant.

Eedris Abdulkareem – Jaga Jaga

‘Jaga Jaga’ was a controversial song at the time of its release. Banned by the then Obasanjo administration, the lyrics are still valid in 2020.

While on the surface, it looks like Nigeria has come a long way, underneath chaos and trouble brew, an effect that the nation is currently experiencing.

African China – Mr President

Released more than a decade ago, African China’s lyrics in ‘Mr President’ are still relevant in these present situations.

The song which is a letter to Leaders to lead well is still relevant as Bad Governance is at the core of the issues plaguing the nation.

Davido – Fem

‘Fem’ isn’t a political song but its lyrics serve a good purpose for the protesters who don’t hesitate to sing for anyone who is not aligned with the goal of the protest.

‘Fem’ is slang for ‘shut up’ so it has been used to ridicule political leaders who try to play the usual act so as to disperse the protest. An Example of this is Lagos State Governor, Sanwo Olu.

2005 was a turning point for Nigerian music. If the year 2000 laid the foundation for what is the Naija pop scene as we know it today, 05 was the initial stage built on that foundation.

It marked an era of more originality in Nigerian music as it seemed artistes had finally stopped covering/imitating their western counterparts; and began incorporating even more Nigerian elements into their music.

It was the also birth of a number of seminal acts like P-Square and D’b*nj, who would go on to dominate the industry for an extended period.

So here are the Nigerian classics that are turning 15 years in 2020.

Bizzy Body – P-square ft Waje

In 2005, Musical duo, P-square released their second studio album, “Get Squared” and off the album was the lead track, “Bizzy Body” which features Waje.

The song could be credited for catapulting them to success. A remix was later released and it featured Weird MC.

‘Fuji’ features Ikechukwu and Dekunle Fuji and is an upbeat pop song that fuses with the Fuji genre

Nigeria Jagajaga and other throwback songs did so well during their time of release in tackling corruption and other government ills.

Jaga jaga and other Throwback Songs that Tackled the Government

While we currently have very few artists who use their songs as a tool to tackle the government ill’s and corrupt acts, there were times where music was constantly used as a tool to ensure that the government deliver good governance to the people.

A worthy mention of this category is Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti who used his songs as a tool to battle the corrupt politicians and speak against the government ills.

While a lot of artists focused more on using their songs to make money and gain fame, others used their tracks to actively fight the ills in governance and political system.

[irp]

Making it important to give credit artists like Falz who has in recent time been doing much with singing against government ills but because this is a throwback they will not be making it to this list.

Pioneering the fight against corruption and other government ill’s with music, Fela Anikulapo Kuti who set the pace for others to follow did a great job with using his music to tackle government ills.

[irp]

Toeing the line of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, artists like Eedris Abdul Kareem and African China has done well with using their songs as a tool to tackle government ills.

African China – Mr President

Making this Mp3bullet.ng’s list is a track from African China titled Mr President. The track which was telling Nigerian leaders to govern the country very well also addressed the issue of police and bribery. The song which chorused

Mr President Lead us well

If You be Governor Govern us well

If You be Senator Senate Us well

If You be police Police well well no dey take bribe

…Seemed to address vital issues that have been eating different sectors of the government.

Eedris Abdulkareem – Jaga Jaga

Also worthy to be on this list is track from veteran rapper Eedris Abdulkareem Jaga Jaga which talked about the poor state of the country was a track that reminded Nigerians of the poor state of the government. Eedris Abdulkareem who used his songs to urge Nigerians to rise up and speak up against government ills seems to be one of the very few artists who used his track to tackle government ills.

[irp]

Sound Sultan – 2010

Also worthy to be on this list is a track from another multi-talented singer Sound Sultan. 2010 which was released to address the vision 2010 promises made by the politicians in power. Released at the tail end of 2009 and the beginning of 2010, the track talked about the failed promises that the government in power made about 2010.

Fela Anikulapo Kuti – Sorrow Tears and Blood

Topping this list is Afro King legend Fena Anikulapo Kuti. Known for his fearlessness even in the military era Fela Anikulapo Kuti released a lot of tracks that addressed government ills, from Zombie to Sorrow tears and blood amongst other very great tracks that he recorded to address government ills. Sorrow Tears and Blood by Fela also talked about the social ills and was

Tekno’s new song, “Better” lives up to the ‘Hope For Africa’ title.

Hear what some people have to say and you’ll realize many people actually believe Africa is so bad, there can be no redemption for the black continent. Bad economy, bad government, insecurity, low minimum wage, bad roads and all sorts of rubbish to blame.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B1q77n0J2fM/

And, since the late legend, Fela Kuti, more and more artists have always got one thing or the other to say about the issues, in the country. From Eedris Abdulkareem to African China, to Dagrin, the queue is really long. Lately, we’ve got our share of Falz, too. While Seun Kuti is also doing his part.

But what’s the point if we think these issues are good topics to make songs out of, but we don’t actually believe things will get better? You don’t have to answer that, that’s rhetoric.

Tekno is a well known pop star, and what’s he known for? Some really banging love tunes which usually don’t have to be deep, as long as there are one or two words, girls’ names, maybe and then some “dibi daba diba dobo.” He actually blew up singing “baby Palanga.” Probably learned most of that from Iyanya, who used to be his boss at Made Men Music Group.

Over the years, he’s shown himself to be a really good and talented guy, perfect African Chris Brown. He also got some dance moves, to match. And, given that he’s a crazy-ass producer, his Afro game is top-notch. “Pana”, “Yawa”, “GO”, “Where”, and a whole lot of other impressive pieces. He’s made his point, he is a good artist and can be versatile when he needs to.

Well, since he left his former label and started his own imprint, he’s been doing some different things. First, he did the Zanku-themed “Agege” with Zlatan Ibile. It was only a matter of time before something like “Better” came through.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B0nNmeOpSv5/

“Better”, has a rather groovy afro-beat, which is probably not really befitting of what Tekno did on the track. He did make some good music, though. He was talking about the bad economy and praying it all gets better one day. That is, he didn’t just want to do the critic job, but he also got to say some prayer.

We’ve heard better from the guy, but this Tekno song ain’t bad. Although this isn’t the first time he’s doing something of this sort, as he’s tried talking about what was happening around on his 2017 hit, “Rara.” Maybe “Rara” was even a better hit? But yeah, at a time like this, this is some good stuff with the good vibe we need.

Even if this doesn’t reassure people that there’s still hope, it’s still good music. Does Tekno deserve some accolades? I say, why the hell not?
