At a recent event covered by Gold Myne TV, the Gongo Aso crooner aimed at the widespread practice of Christianity and Islam in the country, arguing that despite years of devotion and constant prayers, Nigeria has seen little tangible progress in security, economy, or national growth.

“You will leave Nigeria and go to Mecca to go and lick rock all in the name of Kabba. Ever since you have been calling on Allah and Jesus, this country hasn’t gotten any better. If you go to London, nobody goes to church there yet they are better than Nigeria,” 9ice said.

He further highlighted the contrast between religious routines in Nigeria and the relative secularism of countries like the United Kingdom, noting that citizens abroad often work on Sundays while many Nigerians spend hours in church, praying over matters that, in his view, they could address themselves.

“They go to work on Sundays but Nigerians go to church. A lot of Nigerians spend most their time in church in the name of weekly services. They pray over everything, including things to should fix themselves,” he added.

Describing himself as a heathen, 9ice challenged the notion that embracing foreign religions has brought meaningful improvements to the country, stirring discussions on faith, culture, and the role of religion in national progress.

In a video that quickly went viral, 9ice explained that he deliberately concealed this spiritual path, worried that public knowledge might alienate fans.

“I’ve been a Babalawo now for more than 18 years, but I hide. Because if you know, you will run away from me. So I’ve been hiding it,” he said.

The singer also shared insights about Odun Ifa, a traditional celebration aligned with an individual’s spiritual cycle. He likened it to star signs, explaining that each person has a day of birth with a corresponding spiritual rhythm. Odun Ifa, according to 9ice, is a period for giving thanks to God for past blessings and seeking guidance for the year ahead.

“When we do our Odun Ifa, we are appreciating God for what he has done before, and then you preparing that night for the next three days that the year that is yet to come. Please guide me, tell me what I need to know,” he said.

9ice also discussed how his spiritual life influences his music, noting that his songs often reflect his devotion and traditional beliefs.

“I just thought, which topic of the song do I like to talk about to let my people know my kind of God. When I want to sing about my God, it is so traditional; there is a way we sing about my God,” he shared.

He added that he hopes to modernize this spiritual storytelling to resonate with younger generations:

“I want to start making it appealing for our generation.”

By blending his music with his spirituality, 9ice continues to carve a unique space in the Nigerian music scene, bridging tradition with contemporary appeal.

The result is Unfinished Business, his third studio album, a 13-track journey that feels like stepping into a time capsule and finding the contents glowing brighter than you remember.

For many Nigerians, ID Cabasa isn’t just a producer; he’s part of the country’s musical DNA. As the mastermind behind Coded Tunes, he helped shape the sound that birthed giants like Olamide, 9ice, and Reminisce.

Those mid-2000s years were the foundation of modern Afrobeats, and with Unfinished Business, Cabasa pulls from that era, “reimagining” his beloved hits with original voices and today’s brightest stars. He’s not simply dropping an album; he’s curating a moving, breathing museum of Nigerian music history.

At the heart of the project is “Photocopy Reimagined,” a reunion that feels almost cinematic. Hearing 9ice step back onto one of the most important records of his career, now dressed in a 2025 production glow, is goosebump material.

Vector joins him, weaving a verse that respects the original’s message of authenticity while flexing the layered wordplay he’s known for. Cabasa keeps the song’s gritty percussive spirit intact, but everything is sharpened, polished, and tuned for modern speakers. It feels like the “Alapomeji” spirit walked into the future and found its rhythm waiting.

Then there’s “Olufunmi Reimagined,” the track that feels like Cabasa threw a class reunion and a talent show into the same room. Styl-Plus’ iconic ballad is reborn through a powerhouse lineup: BOJ, Joeboy, Fireboy DML, and Odumodublvck.

The contrast is delicious, with Odumodu’s gritty, drill-tinted delivery bouncing off Joeboy’s softness, Fireboy’s emotional depth, and BOJ’s smooth Alté resonance. It shouldn’t work, but it does. Cabasa’s production gives each artist air to breathe, proving just how adaptable his sonic blueprint is.

But perhaps the clearest statement of the album’s purpose comes on “Bere Mi,” where Zlatan and T.I Blaze bring the street-hop energy of today onto a foundation built over a decade ago.

Cabasa uses the collaboration to make a quiet but powerful point: the new wave didn’t appear out of thin air; it grew from roots he helped plant. The album becomes both a reminder and a revelation, linking the past with the present through drums, melodies, and memory.

What makes Unfinished Business shine isn’t just nostalgia. It’s Cabasa’s understanding of his role. He’s not just flipping old records for sentiment; he’s orchestrating experiences. Every feature feels intentional. Every update feels like a respectful dialogue between eras.

The album is warm, cohesive, and carefully crafted the kind of project that makes older fans smile knowingly while giving younger listeners a front-row seat to a history lesson disguised as a playlist.

In the end, Unfinished Business proves a simple truth: great music never really fades. It only waits for the right moment and the right hands to be reintroduced. And for Cabasa, “unfinished” doesn’t mean incomplete. It means the story is far from over.

Veteran Afropop star 9ice has showered praise on a new wave of Nigerian artists, commending their originality, lyrical depth, and fearless creativity in pushing the boundaries of Afrobeats.

In a recent interview captured on video, the Gongo Aso hitmaker expressed admiration for emerging acts such as Fola, Ayo Maff, Shoday, Rybeena, and Fido, singling out Fido’s latest single, Joy Is Coming, as a standout example of the evolving Nigerian soundscape.

“I love a whole lot of them,” 9ice said. “Their style is quite different, and at least, they are testing that topic that people are running away from.”

He highlighted Joy Is Coming as a refreshing deviation from the overused themes of romance and nightlife in contemporary Afrobeats.

“It’s not about girls now — and everybody loves it,” he noted, adding that having a distinct creative identity is what defines longevity in the industry. “Once you have your own niche, that’s it.”

9ice’s endorsement carries weight, given his pivotal role in shaping the sound of modern Nigerian pop music through classics like Street Credibility and Photocopy.

His acknowledgment of the new generation signals a shift toward more introspective, experimental storytelling within the Afrobeats movement.

As Nigeria’s music scene continues to evolve, 9ice’s recognition serves as a nod of approval to young artists who are rewriting the rules and proving that authenticity still reigns supreme.

Veteran Nigerian singer Alexander Adegbola Akande, popularly known as 9ice, has sparked intense conversation after claiming that the music industry is under the control of the devil.

Speaking candidly during an interview on The Nancy Isime Show, the 45-year-old ‘Gongo Aso’ crooner described the devil as the spiritual force influencing many of the habits and struggles commonly found among musicians.

“The devil controls music. Devil is the choirmaster. That’s why we smoke and do all the things we do,” he declared.

According to 9ice, his claims are based on personal spiritual experiences, not speculation. He described the devil as “the most powerful angel” and urged aspiring artists to be spiritually prepared before entering the industry.

“Music generally is controlled by the devil. If you’re coming to this industry, understand where you’re coming to. I’m not lying to you. I’m speaking based on knowledge and what I’ve experienced spiritually,” he added.

When asked by host Nancy Isime whether he had ever faced spiritual warfare tied to his career, 9ice responded, “Several times.”

Recounting one of his most harrowing experiences, he said,
“There was a time I was vomiting blood continuously for six months in my house. I had to leave. This was around 2009 to 2010, and it wasn’t a medical issue.”

” Devil controls music. Devil is the choirmaster … I am not Christian, I’m not Muslim, I’m Babalawo “

Pressed further on how he protects himself spiritually, 9ice shared that he has embraced African traditional spirituality.

“I’m not a Christian or Muslim. I’m a Babalawo. I’m a traditionalist,” he said. “The first time I encountered Ifa was during that period I was vomiting blood. Someone referred me to it, and since then, I’ve followed that path. I only wish I had known Ifa earlier.”

He also referenced Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, saying,
“Fela used to visit Ogun shrines and people mocked him for it. But now, I understand where he was coming from.”

9ice’s revelations have stirred mixed reactions across social media, with some praising his honesty and others questioning his beliefs. Regardless, the singer has once again positioned himself as a fearless voice unafraid to speak on topics many shy away from in the industry.

UK-based Nigerian rapper and singer Darkoo confirms the release date of the ‘Gongo Aso’ remake with 9ice, set to deliver a sonic blast from the past, teaming up with legendary artist 9ice for a fresh collaboration that pays homage to one of Nigeria’s most celebrated anthems, Gongo Aso.

The new track, still untitled, is scheduled for release on June 27, 2025, and is already stirring excitement within the Afrobeats community.

What’s got fans buzzing is the fact that it features a reimagined sample of Gongo Aso, the 2008 classic that catapulted 9ice to stardom and remains a staple in Nigerian music history.

Darkoo, known for her unique fusion of UK drill, Afro-fusion, and streetwise lyricism, is giving the timeless hit a modern-day twist. Not only does the track sample the original, but it also features 9ice himself, creating a powerful collaboration that bridges two eras of Nigerian music.

Originally released nearly two decades ago, Gongo Aso was more than just a hit—it was a cultural phenomenon. From wedding receptions to street corners, the track dominated airwaves and playlists, marking a high point in 9ice’s career with its rich Yoruba lyrics and infectious rhythm.

Now, Darkoo is reviving that magic, blending nostalgia with new-school energy to create what many are already predicting will be a summer anthem. With 9ice lending his signature vocals and presence to the track, fans can expect a seamless mix of past and present sounds that celebrate Nigerian musical heritage while pushing the genre forward.

The collaboration also represents a meaningful cross-generational moment in Afrobeats—where the trailblazing legacy of an icon meets the global vision of a rising star.

Keep an eye out for the release on June 27, as Darkoo and 9ice prepare to reignite the fire of Gongo Aso for a whole new generation.

Olamide recently shared a wholesome moment with Nollywood star Femi Adebayo and fellow artists during a lively gathering in Abuja, where admiration, laughter, and mutual respect were on full display.

The YBNL boss, known offstage as Olamide Adedeji, reunited with top figures in Nigeria’s entertainment industry at the event — including actor Femi Adebayo, iconic singer 9ice, and street-hop sensation Small Doctor.

A particularly heartwarming moment unfolded when Olamide approached Adebayo to praise his latest cinematic project, Seven Doors. Calling him “boss man,” Olamide leaned in to whisper his admiration for the film, lighting up Adebayo’s face with a huge, appreciative grin.

Their exchange caught the attention of 9ice, who playfully quipped that what Adebayo needed was some cash — sparking laughter all around. Olamide then shared a touching moment with 9ice himself, nearly going down in a traditional show of respect before 9ice quickly pulled him in for a warm, brotherly embrace.

The good vibes continued as Olamide linked up with Small Doctor. Despite a roaring crowd chanting “Badoo,” the two artists found time to bond quietly, speaking in hushed tones and laughing amid the noise before parting ways.

The event served as a powerful reminder of the camaraderie that fuels Nigeria’s vibrant entertainment space — where mutual admiration transcends genres, generations, and egos.

Legendary singer 9ice’s album, Gongo Aso, is still a classic after 17 years, standing as one of the defining sounds of that era.

Many people didn’t think that 9ice, the Nigerian music star, would have such a huge impact on Nigerian music when he released his album, Gongo Aso on March 15, 2008. Even though it’s been 17 years, this record is still a classic in the history of African music. Its sound and cultural significance make it timeless.

The record Gongo Aso is a big deal in both Nigerian music and 9ice’s career. The release of Gongo Aso was a welcome change. It came out at a time when Nigerian music was shifting from traditional Afrobeat to a more modern mix of hip-hop, highlife, and rap. The 14-track album became a classic right away, connecting with music fans of all ages as it captured the energy of the streets, the knowledge of the leaders, and the thrill of city life.

The main song, “Gongo Aso,” became an anthem and is one of the best songs on the record. It not only topped the charts in Nigeria, but its catchy tune and catchy sounds also got a lot of attention in other countries. The song undoubtedly gained popularity due to its constant play in bars, clubs,tv,radio and the streets. The lyrics of 9ice resonated deeply with fans, capturing the essence of business, partying, and the daily lives of young Nigerians. Rich and poor alike could relate to this song because it was about things they both wanted to achieve.

ID Cabasa was a big part of Gongo Aso’s success. He primarily produced most of the album’s songs and mixed traditional sounds with modern beats to make a unique sound that appealed to a wide audience.

The record also had relationships that stood out. Most of the songs showed off 9ice’s unique skills, but only two features on them. For the first song, “Street Credibility,” 9ice worked with the famous 2Baba (formerly known as 2Face Idibia). Their work together on the single added depth by mixing 2Baba’s signature musical flair with 9ice’s local style. The second relationship was with Fuji artist Pasuma. 9ice’s sound and Pasuma’s unique Fuji style went well together, making for a rich musical experience. His work on the song “Ati je lo’” was a wonderful mix of different types of Nigerian music. The only guest spots on the record were from these two projects. Because of this, 9ice was able to keep a strong sense of who they were while still being willing to work with others.

Other outstanding songs like “Photocopy,” “Party Rider,” and “Wedding day” proved that “Gongo Aso” was an album that could skilfully mix Afrobeat, hip-hop, and highlife. Gongo Aso was famous for more than just its catchy beats and sounds. It was also known for its deep lyrics. There was a mix of sexy lyrics and catchy tunes on 9ice‘s record that made it stand out. His storytelling skills shined a light on love, social problems, and the joy of Nigerian culture in songs like “Gongo Aso”, ‘Wedding day’ and “Photocopy.” His unique voice and unique way of speaking English and Yoruba together made the record seem more real, and it quickly became a favourite in Nigerian homes and cars.

In a song like “Ade Ori,” Nine talks about royalty and how a king can be recognised by his crown and fly whisk. At that age, he says he was the best in the singing business, and he thanks God for bringing him into it. The last track on the Gongo Aso record, “9ice Takes His Time to Praise God,” is a strong and thoughtful way to end the collection.

In addition to making a lot of money, the record received nine times as many awards and nominations, solidifying his place in the history of Nigerian music. The biggest change that Gongo Aso brought about was in the Nigerian music business, but its success also marked a big change in 9ice’s career. It marked the start of a new era for Afrobeats and showed that local artists could become famous around the world.

As it celebrates 17 years of success, Gongo Aso is still an important part of conversations about the history of Nigerian music. You can’t say enough good things about how it has changed artists now and in the future. The record is more than just a collection of songs; it’s a statement of musical genius and cultural pride because it boldly blends traditional and modern sounds and has had a huge impact on Nigerian pop culture.

At the end of the day, Gongo Aso is a wonderful example of what genuine, creative, and close-knit Nigerian music is all about. Even after 17 years, it’s still a powerful piece of music. Great music, like all real classics, gets better with age.

Originally composed by ID Cabasa, Bere Mi became a cultural staple, with rappers 2Phat and 9ice capturing the struggles and aspirations of the everyday Nigerian.

The track’s infectious rhythm and heartfelt storytelling made it an anthem of resilience. Now, with this revamped version, Zlatan’s high-energy delivery and T.I Blaze’s emotive lyricism add a fresh street-hop dynamic, bridging the gap between old-school classics and the modern Afrobeats scene.

Speaking about the project, ID Cabasa expressed his excitement: “Bere Mi struck a chord with so many when it first came out. Bringing Zlatan and T.I Blaze into this reimagination adds a fresh layer to its legacy while honoring what made it special. I can’t wait for longtime fans and new listeners alike to hear this fusion of eras—it’s a celebration of where we’ve been and where we’re going.”

Zlatan, known for his streetwise anthems, and T.I Blaze, who has quickly gained recognition for his soul-stirring melodies, elevate the track’s energy.

Ruggedman, a veteran rapper, has disclosed that although he introduced musician 9ice to his ex-wife Toni Payne, the singer refused to invite him to their wedding.

He claimed that one fateful Saturday, 9ice’s ex-wife called to tell him that it was their wedding day and that her husband had told her not to invite him.

In an interview with well-known media figure Chude Jideonwo, the rapper revealed this.

He said, “I introduced 9ice to Toni Payne but 9ice didn’t invite me to his wedding with her.

“One Saturday morning, I woke up to a call from Toni Payne. She was like, ‘Ahn ahnn! Where are you now?’ I said, ‘Where am I what? I am at home.’ She said they were getting married that day. I asked her why didn’t she tell me and she said she wanted to but 9ice said she shouldn’t tell me.”

Ten years ago, 9ice and Toni Payne called it quits when the musician revealed that his wife had an extramarital affair with Ruggedman.

Ruggedman and 9ice exchanged diss tracks as a result of the controversy, and 9ice angrily refuted the accusations.

The musicians allegedly ended their feud later on.
