These Nigerian music groups caused a lot of heartbreaks for fans after they disbanded and went their separate way.

There was a time in the industry that music groups were dominating the industry and changing the landscape of the music scene.

However, as the music industry became to evolve so did personal interests causing a lot of groups to dissolve and go their separate ways.

We are unable to avoid recalling beloved musical bands whose dissolution crushed hearts across the nation.

Here are 10 musical groups—ranging from Mo’hits to TrybesMen—that we miss and would dearly like to see reunited:

Mo’hits

Nigeria lost one of the best music collectives in history in 2012 when co-founder and producer Don Jazzy announced their breakup on social media after nearly ten years in the business.

Everyone broke apart from the organisation, blaming each other and citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for its dissolution.

Fans will never again hear club bangers from the Don Jazzy, D’banj, Ikechukwu, Wandecoal, Kayswitch, and Dr. SID collective, who won their hearts with their outstanding performances.

They had some of the best songs ever, including You Bad, Booty Call, Pere, Be Close To You, and Ten Ten.

The group had a brief comeback when they performed together for the first time since the split on 27 December 2017 at Davido’s show tagged “30Billion Concert.”

Plantashun Boiz

Innocent Idibia (2Baba), Chibuzor Oji (Faze), and Ahmedu Augustine Obiano (Black Faze) formed Plantashun Boiz, a powerful trio in the music industry.

This R&B/Hip-hop boy band was one of the most well-known musical acts of the decade.

Three outstanding guys who emerged as the leading voices of the new school were introduced to a generation of young music enthusiasts through the songs they wrote, which mixed elements of pop, rap, and reggae.

The band released three albums together and is well known for songs like Say You Believe Me, You and I, and Plantashun Boiz.

Their songs sold out like wildfire. They topped charts across the country, diverted attention from the dominant old genres, and used the Nigerian pop sound to get unprecedented amounts of airplay on radio stations, practically serving as a model for how to make the music as commercially sustainable as possible.

However, the trio disbanded in 2004 when 2Baba decided to pursue a solo career. His iconic solo debut album, Face2Face, featured the hit song African Queen, which served as the catalyst for his rise to prominence as one of Africa’s top entertainers.

While Black faze switched from R&B to reggae music, which also helped him get a lot of street respect and love, Faze released his debut album, Faze Alone, which went on to sell 1.2 million copies.

Regardless of their individual success, we would still love to see them together.

Styl-Plus

Shifi Emoefe, Tunde Akinsanmi, Yemi Akinwonmi, and Lanre Faneyi were the founding members; STYL is an acronym for their first names.

When Lanre Faneyi passed away in 1998, Zeal Onyechem took over and altered the group’s name to Styl-Plus, with the “Plus” signifying the new member.

However, Yemi Akinwonmi quit the group in 2002, leaving Shifi Omoefe, Zeal Onyecheme, and Tunde Akinsanmi as a trio.

They were responsible for the number-one songs Olufunmi, Runaway, Iya Basira, and Imagine dat.

Styl-plus officially split up soon after the release of the song “Four years dun waka,” and Tunde went on to seek a solo career.

As die-hard fans, we still long for the musical group that stole our hearts in the early 2000s.

Remedies

The Remedies, which consisted of Tony Tetuila, Eedris Abdulkareem, and Eddie Remedy, were extremely well-known in the 1990s thanks to their popular songs Shakomo and Omoge.

They even had a contract with Kennis Music, the largest record company in Nigeria at the time.

Due to insurmountable differences, the group broke up.

While Eedris Abdulkareem continued to be in the public eye with songs like Oko Omoge, Mr Lecturer, and Jaga Jaga, Tetuila rose to fame with songs like Omode Meta, Morning Time, Hit My Car, and My Heart Go Jigijigi. Eddy Remedy has been out in the public eye for some time.

Maintain

Popularly referred to as “The Boys from Ibadan,” Olu Maintain, Tolu, and Big Bamo dominated the Nigerian music industry with hits like “I Catch Cold” and “Nibo la wa gbe lo.”

Olu Maintain went on to release Yahooze after the trio disbanded in 2005. While Tolu concentrated on his work as a banker, Big Bamo released Fi jo ko wo je and Popotiti.

TrybesMen

They are sometimes referred to as Da Trybe and are frequently referred to as “one of the pioneers of hip hop in Nigeria.”

eLDee, Kaboom, and Freestyle—the group’s founding three members—met in 1994. In 1999, they published L.A.G Style Volume 1, which received positive reviews. Trybal Marks and Shake Bodi were among their hits.

After the group disbanded, eLDee and Freestyle each released a solo album.

Infinity

They were a gospel group that rose to fame in 2007 after releasing the successful singles Olori Oko, Aye Ole, and Only Praise.

They only released one album after the departure of Kehinde Akinbode, now known as K’ore, who later admitted that members of the gospel group were not practising what they preached.

Following his departure, the group of four men made an effort to remain together, but they were not as noticeable as they had been.

However, Nigerian entertainers were up and going to save the day with their arts.

YBNL- Olamide

Olamide has refused to drop the ball after ten years and over ten albums. YBNL brought us the azonto-heavy First of All, as well as Voice of the Streets, Ilefo Illuminati, and the vastly underappreciated International Local featuring Tiwa Savage.

OBO (Omo Baba Olowo): The Genesis – Davido

Since his debut in 2012, Davido has come a long way—from the early days of “On the beat is Davido” to significant international tours.

OBO (Omo Baba Olowo): The Genesis was the collective behind hits like Dami Duro and Back When, which featured Naeto C. Afrobeats has never been the same since Davido took over with his carrot-jeans look.

Blessed -Flavour

Flavour entered, tore off his shirt, whinnied his waist passionately, sang about remembering to enjoy life, and instantly won our hearts.

Blessed is one of his most outstanding albums to date. Even now, without Ada Ada, no wedding is complete, and without Shake, no party can end without busting people’s waistlines.

Book of Rap Stories -Reminisce

Even in 2022, it is difficult to avoid losing your home training when Kako Bi Chicken is playing. Accept it. We have all been there, so nobody will pass judgement.

With Olamide and the late Dagrin blowing up street-influenced rap, Reminisce’s Book of Rap Stories arrived at the opportune time and made an impression on the music landscape.

Solar Plexus -Mavin

When Don Jazzy revealed that Mo’Hits Records had split up in 2012, we were all shocked.

But later that year, Don Jazzy unveiled a new record company, Mavin Records, and dropped a surprise album, Solar Plexus, raising the level of surprise to another height.

Mo’Hits’ blood was still fresh on the streets when we started singing, “Take banana till you go yo.”

Even if Mavin has changed over the years to become the name associated with celebrities like Ayra Starr and Ladipoe, the “Mavin activated” era was a golden one.

Above and Beyond -2Baba or 2Face Idibia

Do we wish Only Me, one of 2Baba’s best tracks from this time period, had been included on Above and Beyond? Yes. He nevertheless left us with Ihe Neme, Dancing in the Rain, and Rainbow, a romantic anthem from before Instagram dama. He was dropping bops all over the place.

Empire Mates State of Mind -EME All Stars

No record label in 2012 was fulfilled until it released a compilation album. Banky W released Empire Mates State of Mind for his label, Empire Mates, after Don Jazzy arrived with Solar Plexus. Hit songs including Get Down Tonight, Dance For Me, Roll It, and Baddest Boy were featured on the album.

Oga Boss – IllBliss

In 2012, IllBliss struck the ideal balance between expansive choruses and clever wordplay in his lyrics, resulting in a sophomore album that appeals to both hip-hop fans and the crucial pop charts.

With guest appearances from Chidinma to Timaya and street anthems “Anamachikwanu” and “Emi ni baller” as its openers, “Oga Boss” iLLBliss laid a good example of how to achieve a hit without abandoning your roots.

Son of a Kapenta- Brymo

Prior to Brymo signing to Chocolate City in 2010, very few people knew him or even knew he had released an album. But Oleku dropped and he blew up but he didn’t rest on his laurels and managed to give fans a great album under the label.

He released the Legendury Beatz-produced “Ara” as the album’s lead single.

Brymo’s “Son of a Kapenta” is a contemporary pop master lesson and essential listening for anyone intending to pursue a career as a vocalist, from the unsteady but intriguing first act through the vice-tightening and dreamily imaginative second act and down to the just magnificent finale.

Some celebrities have changed their names completely, while others have incorporated modest stylistic effects to boost their music career.

He then left G Worldwide to launch Flyboy Inc., his own record label.

During the legal battle, his ex-label claimed ownership and copyrighted the name ‘Kiss Daniel,’ prompting the artist to adopt the moniker Kizz Daniel, which swiftly spread on social media.

Cruel Santino

Nigerian Alte star, Cruel Santino has changed his stage name twice. he was first known as Ozzy B, then switched to the name Santi under which he achieved a considerable level of fame. In 2020, he announced a new change of name to Cruel Santino.

He explained that competing copyright issues with ‘one man in Spain’ led to the eventual decision to let his former moniker, ‘Santi’ go.

He wrote;

Ladipoe

When Nigerian Rapper, Ladipoe first surfaced on the internet, he used to be known as Poe. After he signed into Mavin Records, his name was changed to Ladipoe which he currently uses to date.

In 2020, Mavin Record Boss, Don Jazzy explained the reason behind this change. According to him, the name change had to happen because of copyrights issues.

Sinzu formerly known as Sauce Kid was a popular rapper in the early 2000s.

On Friday, July 20, 2012, via social network Twitter, the rapper said he now wants to be addressed as Sinzu SMG.

‘Officially dropped the alias ‘Sauce Kid’ he tweeted. He has since changed his Twitter handle from @oluwasaucekibaba to @SinzuSMG.

Buju

Buju is the latest artist to join the gang of artists changing their names. First known as Drizzle during his early days, he switched to Buju, which was inspired by Jamaican Dancehall singer, Buju Banton.

However, recently the singer announced a change of name to BNXN which is pronounced ‘Benson‘, his surname.

Cynthia Morgan

In 2020, Cynthia morgan resurfaced on the music scene after a long break. Her comeback wasn’t without drama as she went on an interview blaming her former boss, Jude Okoye for her ordeals in the music Industry.

She also announced that she wants to be known as Madrina. Unlike the rest of the artists on this list, the new name is yet to be recognized by fans and the music industry.

Sound Sultan rose to prominence in the early 2000s after releasing his first single, “Jagbajantis,” which was an instant hit in Nigeria.

He was signed by Kennis Music after releasing a number of tracks independently and appearing in hit songs by other artists.

He released his first studio album, “Kpseeeeeeew,” in 2001. He released his eighth (and final) studio album, “8th Wondah,” four years after his 2016 album “Out of The Box.”

Many of his songs dealt with societal themes as they related to the hardships that the country was facing at the time.

At the age of 44, the trailblazing singer, rapper, and composer passed away on July 11, 2021, after a hard-fought battle with Angioimmunoblastic T-Cell Lymphoma, a rare type of cancer.

This song is dedicated to “all his brothers wey don ja comot for naija,” according to the “Jagbajantis” singer. “No matter where you go, don’t forget about area!” he adds. “There is no place like home,” says the Sound sultan.

Ole(Bush Meat)

With the classic lyric “Eba mi ki ole,” Sound Sultan talks about the reversed situation in the song which features 2face Idibia and W4 in which he sings “one day, the bushmeat will catch the hunter.”

In this track, he refers to the general public as bushmeat and Nigerian politicians as hunters.

This smash-hit came from the album Bush Meat, which was released in 2011.

Natural Something

Released in 2013, “Natural Something” is sung from the POV of a man who is addicted to women and can’t seem to stop spending money on them. The catch song was a hit at the time of its release.

2010 ft M.I Abaga

This conscious track named “2010” (Light Up) featuring M.I Abaga was released in 2010 and talks about the government’s false promises to deliver power by 2010.

Addressing the lack of stable electricity in Nigeria and the failure of elected leaders to fix the issue, Sultan wishes to show his people to promise land and be like Moses but those who tried it have been 6ft down.

Orobo

While most of his songs dealt with social issues, this one encouraged plus-size ladies to embrace their bodies. It was released in 2013 as part of the album 51 Lex and featured Excel.

Mathematics

The classic, which became a street song in 2000, continues to be well-liked today. If you grew up in the 2000s, you can’t deny that this song was an anthem at the time.

In the song, He sang about societal difficulties such as poor education, corruption, ineptness, and poverty. He questioned and chastised politicians.

He described the term BODMAS in his own terms in this song.

According to reports from SaharaReporters Sound Sultan has commenced chemotherapy in one of the hospitals in the United States of America.

The singer has however not made this news known on his social media accounts. He did hint on his absence in a post he made on Instagram a few days ago where he wrote; “In the words of Terminator …….. I Will be Back”

Fellow celebrities alongside fans were in the comment section offering him encouragement and support.

Sound Sultan‘s career in show business started in the 1990s, when he hosted shows to raise money for studio sessions.

By 1999, he had won numerous local talent-hunt shows. He released his first single “Jagbajantis” in 2000, which was a hit in Nigeria.

In 2015, Sound Sultan released the rap single “Remember” after a long absence from the music scene.
