The Portuguese midfielder edged out several top contenders across the league to win the prestigious honour for the first time in his career, capping off a season where he served as both creative engine and on-field leader for the Red Devils.

Fernandes played a central role in Manchester United’s strong league performance, producing elite numbers in chance creation and consistently delivering in decisive moments to help steer the club back into the UEFA Champions League places.

The England head coach revealed that Palmer’s recent struggles with form and consistency played a major role in the decision, especially after the midfielder returned from injury earlier in the season.

According to Tuchel, the Chelsea star was unable to reach the same level of influence and decisiveness he displayed in previous campaigns, while competition for his preferred attacking midfield role was also extremely strong.

“Cole Palmer wasn’t as decisive as previous seasons, he wasn’t available for us a lot and wasn’t decisive.”

Tuchel also explained that the coaching staff ultimately preferred other players operating in similar positions, highlighting the performances of several attacking midfielders who impressed more consistently throughout the season and during England camps.

“He also competes in the right half 10 position, where we decided for Jude, Morgan and Ebs who are outstanding players, had better season and more decisive in our camps than Cole.”

Palmer’s omission has become one of the biggest talking points surrounding England’s final World Cup squad, with many fans surprised to see the talented midfielder miss out despite his strong reputation and recent rise in English football.

Aside from Palmer, Tuchel also left out several other notable names, including Harry Maguire, Phil Foden, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luke Shaw, Jarrod Bowen, Fikayo Tomori, Morgan Gibbs-White, Lewis Hall, Adam Wharton, and Alex Scott.

England are set to face Ghana national football team, Croatia national football team, and Panama national football team during the tournament as they continue their quest to win a first World Cup title since 1966.

The Spaniard, who took charge of City in 2016, confirmed that Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Aston Villa F.C. will be his final match in charge, despite still having one year remaining on his contract. Guardiola described the decision as the “right time” to walk away after one of the most successful managerial eras English football has ever witnessed.

Over the past 10 years, Guardiola transformed Manchester City into a global football powerhouse, redefining the club’s identity with his possession-based philosophy, tactical innovation, and relentless pursuit of excellence. During his spell, City collected 20 major trophies, including six Premier League titles, multiple FA Cups and League Cups, as well as the club’s first-ever UEFA Champions League triumph.

One of the defining moments of his reign came during the unforgettable 2017/18 campaign, when Manchester City became the first side in Premier League history to reach 100 points in a single season — a record-breaking achievement that cemented Guardiola’s place among football’s managerial greats.

The club has already confirmed plans to permanently honour the legendary coach’s contribution. Manchester City intend to rename the North Stand at the Etihad Stadium after Guardiola, and to install a statue celebrating his achievements outside the stadium.

Speaking emotionally about his decision, Guardiola insisted there was no dramatic reason behind his departure, explaining that he felt the time had come to move on.

“Don’t ask me the reasons I’m leaving. There is no reason, but deep inside, I know it’s my time. Nothing is eternal, if it was, I would be here. Eternal will be the feeling, the people, the memories, the love I have for my Manchester City.

“We worked. We suffered. We fought. And we did things our own way. Our way. So as my time comes to an end, be happy. Oasis are back again. Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for trusting me. Thank you for pushing me. Thank you for loving me.”

The announcement has already triggered major speculation over who could replace the Spanish manager. Early reports suggest former assistant coach Enzo Maresca is among the leading candidates after his recent success, including winning the UEFA Europa Conference League and the inaugural expanded FIFA Club World Cup.

Guardiola’s departure marks the end of one of the most influential managerial eras modern football has seen, leaving behind a legacy that reshaped not only Manchester City, but English football itself.

The 44-year-old stepped into the role in January after the departure of Ruben Amorim, inheriting a struggling side sitting seventh in the table and already eliminated from domestic cup competitions. At the time, morale around the club had dropped significantly, but Carrick quickly managed to steady the atmosphere and reconnect the squad with the club’s identity.

Under his leadership, United surged back into the UEFA Champions League places and secured a guaranteed third-place league finish heading into the final day of the season. His impact extended beyond results, with many around the club praising the improved spirit, unity, and confidence within the dressing room.

Carrick is no stranger to Old Trafford. The former midfielder spent 12 years at Manchester United before retiring in 2018 and previously had a short interim coaching spell in 2021 after serving under Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

Speaking after his appointment was confirmed, Carrick reflected emotionally on his connection to the club and outlined his ambitions for the future.

“From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United. Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride. Throughout the past five months, this group of players have shown they can reach the standards of resilience, togetherness and determination that we demand here.

“Now it’s time to move forward together again, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose. Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honours again.”

United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, also praised Carrick’s work during the interim period, insisting the former midfielder fully earned the opportunity.

“Michael has thoroughly earned the opportunity to continue leading our men’s team. In the time he has been doing the role, we have seen positive results on the pitch, but more than that, an approach which aligns with the club’s values, traditions and history.

“Michael’s achievements in leading the club back to the Champions League should not be understated. He has forged a strong bond with the players and can be proud of the winning culture at Carrington and in the dressing room, which we are continuing to build.”

Reports indicate Wilcox strongly backed Carrick’s appointment, with the decision later approved by co-owner Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer family after the club assessed other managerial candidates.

Carrick’s interim spell included statement victories over rivals Manchester City F.C. and Arsenal F.C. in consecutive matches, as well as important wins against Aston Villa F.C. and Liverpool F.C.. Across 16 matches, he recorded 11 wins and three draws.

The appointment was also reportedly well received by the players. Young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who regained a central role in the team under Carrick after struggling during Amorim’s tenure, reportedly said he wanted “to die for him on the pitch.” New signing Matheus Cunha was also among those said to have backed the manager internally.

Carrick’s return to the spotlight comes less than a year after leaving Middlesbrough F.C.. With Manchester United now back in European competition, attention will turn toward strengthening the squad during the summer, with midfield reinforcements reportedly among the club’s top priorities ahead of a demanding new season.

The Portuguese midfielder emerged ahead of strong competition that included Declan Rice and Erling Haaland, becoming the first Manchester United player to claim the prestigious honour since Wayne Rooney won it back in 2010.

Fernandes played a central role in Manchester United’s impressive season, finishing the Premier League campaign with eight goals and an outstanding 20 assists.

His influence proved crucial as the club secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League and re-established itself among England’s top sides.

Throughout the season, Fernandes stood out not only for his creativity but also for his leadership and consistency.

Week after week, the midfielder dictated games, created chances, and delivered key performances in important moments, further strengthening his reputation as one of the league’s most influential players.

The award also places him alongside several Manchester United greats who previously received the honour, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Roy Keane, and Eric Cantona.

Reports indicate Fernandes secured 45 percent of the total votes cast by football journalists across England, highlighting just how dominant his performances were during the campaign.

Since arriving from Sporting CP in 2019, the Portuguese playmaker has remained one of Manchester United’s most reliable and influential figures, consistently delivering goals, assists, and leadership during both difficult and successful periods for the club.

Widely regarded as one of the most respected individual honours in English football, the Football Writers’ Association award is voted for by members of the FWA and has long been considered a major recognition of excellence across the season.

Eric Chelle has unveiled two separate squads for Nigeria national football team ahead of a packed international schedule that includes the 2026 Unity Cup and high-profile friendly matches against Poland national football team and Portugal national football team.

Chelle Names Separate Squads For Unity Cup & Friendlies

The decision to split the teams across both assignments appears to be part of Chelle’s wider plan to assess more players while building depth within the Super Eagles setup.

While the Unity Cup squad largely offers opportunities to emerging and fringe players, the friendly squad features several established stars expected to test themselves against strong European opposition.

The move also gives the new coach another chance to closely evaluate talent ahead of crucial future competitions, including the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

With excitement already building ahead of the competition, the draw confirmed the qualifying groups that will determine which nations secure places at the continental showpiece set to be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

A total of 48 national teams were distributed across four seeding pots before being placed into their respective groups. The qualification format will see the top two teams from each group advance to the main tournament, setting up what is expected to be a fiercely competitive journey across the continent.

For the Nigeria national football team, the draw delivered a group containing the Madagascar national football team, the Tanzania national football team, and the Guinea-Bissau national football team. The Super Eagles, three-time African champions, will be expected to navigate the group strongly as they continue their quest for another continental title.

Meanwhile, reigning African champions Morocco national football team, begin their title defense from Group A, where they have been paired with the Gabon national football team, Niger national football team, and Lesotho national football team.

Another intriguing storyline from the draw involves the South African national football team, who continue to impress under head coach Hugo Broos. South Africa will compete in Group D, where they are set for a fascinating encounter against Kenya national football team, now managed by former South African striker Benni McCarthy.

With the groups now finalized, focus will gradually shift toward the upcoming fixtures as countries across Africa prepare for what promises to be another intense and dramatic qualification campaign on the road to AFCON 2027.

Brazil national football team forward João Pedro has reacted emotionally after being left out of Brazil’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to begin in June in the United States.

João Pedro Breaks Silence After Brazil World Cup Snub

The talented attacker had initially been included in Carlo Ancelotti’s provisional 55-man list, raising hopes that he would secure a place in the final squad. However, when the Brazilian manager unveiled his official 26-man selection, João Pedro’s name was missing, a decision that has already sparked widespread debate among fans and football analysts.

Many supporters had tipped the forward to make the tournament squad following an impressive campaign at club level. His omission became an even bigger talking point after experienced names like Neymar were included despite ongoing concerns surrounding fitness and injuries.

Reports suggest João Pedro watched the squad announcement surrounded by close family and friends, only for the moment to end in disappointment after realizing he would not be travelling with the team for football’s biggest tournament.

Reacting to the setback, the Brazilian shared an emotional message:

“I tried to give my best at all times. Unfortunately, it wasn’t possible to fulfill this dream of representing my country in a World Cup, but I remain calm and focused, as I always try to be. Joys and frustrations are part of football. From now on, I wish good luck to everyone who is there and I will be just another fan cheering for them to bring the sixth title home”.

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti also addressed the difficult decision to leave certain players out of the squad, acknowledging João Pedro directly while insisting his opportunity would still come in the future.

“I am sad for players who have been left out, like João Pedro. They will have chances in the future.”

Despite the disappointment, many believe the young forward still has a bright future ahead with the national team, especially considering his recent development and growing reputation at the club level.

Xabi Alonso has officially been confirmed as the new manager of Chelsea, signing a long-term four-year contract that will see him take charge at Stamford Bridge from July 1 ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Chelsea Confirm Xabi Alonso Appointment as Manager

The appointment marks Alonso’s return to English football years after his successful spell as a player with Liverpool, while also signaling the beginning of another rebuild for Chelsea following a difficult campaign.

The 44-year-old replaces Liam Rosenior and arrives with a growing reputation as one of Europe’s most highly rated young coaches after his impressive managerial rise, which included a Bundesliga title-winning campaign with Bayer Leverkusen.

Chelsea’s season has largely fallen below expectations, with the club sitting ninth in the Premier League with only two matches remaining.

Their hopes of ending the campaign with silverware also disappeared after a narrow FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City under interim manager Calum McFarlane.

After leaving Real Madrid earlier this year, Alonso has now opted for a swift return to management, choosing Chelsea as the next chapter of his coaching journey.

Speaking after the announcement, Alonso expressed pride at taking over one of football’s biggest institutions.

“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club,” he said.

“From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.

“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.”

Chelsea, in an official statement, explained that Alonso’s leadership qualities and long-term vision played a major role in the decision.

“His appointment reflects the Club’s belief in his broad set of experiences, coaching quality and game model, leadership attributes, character and integrity, which were key to the decision to ask him to help lead the next phase of Chelsea’s journey,” the statement read.

With no European football currently expected next season, Alonso is likely to face immediate pressure to restore stability, identity, and competitiveness to a Chelsea side still searching for consistency in the post-Roman Abramovich era.

Guardiola and Arteta headline the list

Pep Guardiola leads the nominations once again after steering Manchester City through another demanding title challenge, as he targets a sixth Manager of the Season crown.

Close behind is Mikel Arteta, who has kept Arsenal firmly in the title conversation as they continue their push to end a 22-year wait for the Premier League trophy.

Carrick earns breakthrough recognition

One of the standout stories of the season is Michael Carrick, whose mid-season appointment at Manchester United sparked a dramatic turnaround. His influence has helped United secure a return to UEFA Champions League qualification places, earning him a surprise but deserved nomination.

Surprise packages and rising coaches

Andoni Iraola is also recognised after guiding AFC Bournemouth into contention for European qualification, powered by an impressive unbeaten run that has defined their season.

Elsewhere, Keith Andrews is nominated following an impressive debut campaign with Brentford, while Régis Le Bris earns praise for steering Sunderland A.F.C. into the top half of the table after their promotion.
