Mp3bullet bring you Kolomental on our throwback list by Faze. Kolomental was the lead single off Faze’s sophomore album, Independent which was released in 2006 and went on to becoming one of the biggest hits of the following year, 2007. As the song title already suggests, the banging track had a special frenzy to it. It created a particular madness stirred up by the musical instrumentation of the song as well as Faze’s uniquely superb vocals.

Independent also happens to the R&B superstar’s best selling album (of his music career) and the biggest (most sold) album of the year 2007. Faze was also a member of the now defunct Plantashun Boiz trio that included 2face Idibia now known as 2Baba and Blackface.

Thursdays are for Throwbacks, and that’s why we at Mp3bullet, never fail to throw black ‘classics’ from the past (Top 10 Naija Songs), for your listening pleasure.

Everything has a past. The industry has a past. There was a time when there was no Olamide, no Davido, no Tiwa Savage, no Burna Boy. But, still, there were many other talented chaps who served us hits, and made us exclaim “what a time to be alive!”

Well, today, we’re throwing back ten hits from the back in the days. And we’re sure you’re gonn’ bang ’em all, and it’s gonn’ bring back some nostalgia. So, quickly, in no particular order.

Paul Play Dairo – Angel Of My Life

Paul is the son of highlife legend, IK Dairo, and his venture into music, was quite successful, too.

“Angel Of My Life” remains his biggest hit, ever, and one of the classic RnB songs Nigeria will ever get.

PSquare – Gimme Dat

The defunct P-Square, were a sensational duo, in the industry, back then. They were steady dropping hits, shutting down concerts, and re-shaping the culture. They did Afro-pop, RnB, dancehall, and just about any genre you could think of.

The track, “Gimme Dat” was off their “Double Trouble” album, and it was a big hit, nationwide. The video which was posted in October 2010, currently has 7M+ views on YouTube.

“She’s on fire, eh eh, oh oh oh oh, she no dey tire…”

M.I Abaga – Fast Money Fast Cars (ft. Wizkid)

M.I’s “Talk About It” was a revolutionary piece, in many ways. Apart from the fact that it schooled rappers on what a hip hop album should look like, it also towed the unconventional collabo path (M.I knows how to choose who he collaborates with).

There was “Safe,” which had “Ego” crooner, Djinee, and there was “Fast Money Fast Cars,” the track that unveiled WizKid.

Far back as 2008, see how Wizkid could deliver on a hook!

D’banj – Why Me

D’banj was the Wizkid of his time. He was comfortable with the music, and he made hits effortlessly.

“Why Me” is off his 2006 sophomore album, “RunDown Funk U Up,” and it was a big banger. With a relatable storyliner, and catchy hook, D’banj captured the whole scene with this!

Wande Coal – Bumper to Bumper

Wande Coal is super-talented, and he’s a great musician. He signed to Mo’ hits in 2006, and dropped the love song “Ololufe” one of the hottest classics, ever.

And, then, there was the club anthem of 2009 “Bumper To Bumper,” everybody was banging it at that time. You just had to follow Wande spend his money!

Eedris Abdulkareem – Jaga Jaga

Eedris, though considered by many as a whack rapper, was one of the pioneers of what would now become “hip-hop” in Nigeria. He was signed to Kennis.

He’s even more notorious for his 2004 hit, “Jaga Jaga,” a song that aptly criticized the way things were going under the Obasanjo-led government. The song was banned, and consequently Eedris’ career dwindled.

But, you know “Jaga Jaga” was already a hit. Everyone could sing it!

Banky W – Ebute Metta

Banky W has been doing his music lowkey for years, before the smash hit “Ebute Metta” came, in ’08.

“Ebute Metta” was a remix of Rihanna’s “Umbrella,”and it preceded the now-classic “Mr Capable” album.

RuggedMan – Ehen

Yes, we know Mode9 is the most lyrical and M.I changed the rap game, but long before that, Ruggedy Baba came. With “Ehen,” he scattered the rap throne that was chaired by whack rappers, like Eedris Abdulkareem.

At a time when Keke Ogungbe’s Kennis held a monopoly on the industry, RuggedMan came and changed everything. He dissed ’em all on “Ehen,” before people like SauceKid, M.I and Mode9 came and breathe fresh air into rap. Respect!

Shank – Julie

The only thing that is left of a once promising artist, called Shank are throwbacks.

“Julie” was one of the hits the dancehall art gave us, and it rocked the airwaves in ’11. Everytime we ask this, and we’ll still keep asking, where is Shank?

General Pype – Champion Remix (ft. Dagrin, Vector, Naeto C, Sasha P)

General Pype’s “Champion” was a big hit, too. And it was an ode to Jamaican athlete Usain Bolt, who broke his record in the 100m race, that year.

The remix was loaded. A verse from the late Dagrin, “Kini Big Deal” rapper, Naeto C, Vector tha Viper, and Nigeria’s foremost femcee, Sasha P. Champion thing!

Which of these throwback hits are you in love with, right now?

Whatever happened to May D…

The year is 2012. I just went to visit my best friend, and he’s telling me about this new video that’s banging, that he’s been seeing on TV. He told me the guy’s name is May D, and the song in question “Ile Ijo.” I was surprised it was this boy that was telling me about a new hot kid on the block. Because usually I was the one who does introduction. But then, later, I discovered why. He was obsessed with May D, and so was everyone. That was the time “Ile Ijo” was one of the hottest songs, and May D, the most promising act.

May D shot to stardom after he signed on to P-Square’s Square Records in 2011, and dropped the track “Soundtrack.” He later dropped “Ile Ijo,” and the video which had popular dancer and Guinness World Record holder, Kaffy, in it. P-Square then put him on the remix of their “Chop My Money,” alongside American singer, Akon. His verse was epic, and then everyone wanted him on their songs.

Davido, Sina Rambo, Show Dem Camp, DJ Xclusive, Iyanya and more featured him. And yeah, everyone knew this was the next-rated. He got nominated for “Best New Act,” at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards in 2012. But, in 2012, he exited Square Records, there was probably a fall-out with the P-Square guys. He moved on and started his own imprint, and nothing was the same. Everything almost crumbled. He still had hits like “Gat Me High” and “So Many Tinz,” though. He even dropped an album in 2013. Everyone thought the industry may have just given him a second shot. He even got nominated as “Best New Musician” at the 2013 City People Awards. But, that wasn’t the May D everyone thought would take over the industry, again.

Year into year, he’s tried to get back to the big scene. In 2014, he scored a hit with “Ibadi,” that went viral for the dance video. He also featured “Wizkid” on Bamilo, that same year. It wasn’t enough. In 2016, he featured Akon and Davido on a single called “Hustle.” Despite the big names on the track, it wasn’t a hit, and at that point, it seemed the industry has given up on him.

Now who will May D run to? The May D, Durella once ran to, to stay hot? The May D everyone thought was the next African superstar. Another day, another story of a very talented guy that faded too quick. Today, we remember May D. TBH, the guy came sauce, back then. But the rest, as they say, is history…

If you’re a millenial, you may not know STYL-Plus, but there’s absolutely no way you’ve not heard anything about “Olufunmi.” Unless, of course, you don’t like Nigerian music.

For lovers of Naija music, “Olufunmi” remains the most classic of all RnB records, that we’ve heard. And, the record is un-beaten, till date. While you may argue, and bring up some other mega songs like Paul Play Dairo’s “Angel Of My Life” and 2Baba’s “African Queen”, there is no doubt in the fact that “Olufunmi” was the most-complete RnB record, ever, having the best vocals, a catchy hook delivered in Yoruba, an Afro-esque beat, and even rap.

Just so you know, STYL-Plus was a RnB group that rocked the early 2000’s. Starting off with four members (Shifi Emoefe, Tunde Akinsanmi, Yemi Akinwonmi and Lanre Faneyi), as STYL, an acronym of their first names. Back in 1997. In 1998, Lanre died, and subsequently, Zeal Onyecheme was added, prompting the addition of “Plus” to their name. Before they could do anything big together, Yemi, also left, in 2002. So, for the most part of it, Styl-Plus operated as a trio. And, they were sucessful!

“Olufunmi” was their biggest hit. Off their 2006 album, “Expressions”, many other hits like “Imagine That”, “Runaway” and “Call My Name” were spurred. But “Olufunmi” stood out, as a classic element. It was a song begging a defiant girlfriend, who was determined to leave ’cause of some rumours. From the storyline, to the lyrics, and the instrumental (supplied by T-Jazz), everything was perfect.

Being a successful hit, a Remix featuring Da Capo came, and an Official Video. Although by the time it was 2008, Styl-Plus were almost obsolete, “Olufunmi” will forever be remembered, as one of the classic RnB songs Nigeria’s ever witnessed. We don’t even have RnB, in the mainstream, anymore!!!

“If you help me see Ego, tell am I don go.. ” If there’s any song Nigerians won’t ever forget, it should be Ego. A song by an RnB artist called Djinee. And yeah, I’m talking bout the time there was no Wizkid, no Davido, or Olamide. I’m talking ’04, ’06. Then, Djinee was one of the hottest in the country. Of course, there was D’banj, Psquare, 2face and a couple others, but Djinee’s uniqueness stood him out.

In 2004, the Edo singer, who had moved to Lagos and had taken up a job at SoundCity TV, got signed to Westside Music Inc. As part of the deal, he had the opportunity to work with any top producer. He chose the multi–talented Cohbams Asuquo, and that was how the hit single Ego happened!

Amidst doubts from the Label on whether the single would be a success and threats that he (Djinee) will take up the cost, if it doesn’t work out, Ego was released. In 2004! It did become a hit. One we will never forget.

A rock song that was the lover’s choice, back then, Ego catapulted Djinee to a Rockstar status. Although, his career never went smoothly, he still managed to wow us for a season.

He left his SoundCity TV job in 2007, to face music squarely. And in 2008, he started rolling with M.I Abaga and the Chocolate City boys. He assisted M.I’s Safe single. He at a time, was also managed by Choc City. His Overkilling Remix had the Choc boys on it.

Tracks like “Lade” also add to his discography. But, the standout is Ego! We can’t forget that! It’s been 14 years, by the way.

He did a song about it, and even named his album after it. Called “Yahooze!” And, that was a decade ago. Not four years, not five years. Oladips should be about 10 then!

Even though they were a group of “wack rappers,” Maintain, which Olu co-formed, are still regarded as one of the pioneers of hip-hop in Nigeria. Before Rugged Man came, and changed shits and M.I Abaga arrived hot. After M.I came, it wasn’t “safe” out there, anymore. Many of the so-called hip-hop groups disbanded, everybody went solo, trying to break into a market that now understands what quality music is.

Olu Maintain The Maintain Who Broke All The Rules" width="550" height="550" srcset="https://mp3bullet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Mp3bullet-TBT-Olu-Maintain-The-Maintain-Who-Broke-All-The-Rules-550x550.jpg 550w, https://mp3bullet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Mp3bullet-TBT-Olu-Maintain-The-Maintain-Who-Broke-All-The-Rules-300x300.jpg 300w, https://mp3bullet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Mp3bullet-TBT-Olu-Maintain-The-Maintain-Who-Broke-All-The-Rules-595xh.jpg 595w, https://mp3bullet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Mp3bullet-TBT-Olu-Maintain-The-Maintain-Who-Broke-All-The-Rules.jpg 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px" />

Then came Olumide Edwards Adegbulu with “Yahooze!” It must have sold millions of copies, because even we that were living in the village at that time had it. What am I saying? Every house had that CD, everybody could sing it word-for-word. It was deep inside the pop culture. The new rave of pushing your single with a dance started from there, too. Yahoo oh oh, yahooze.

The song talks about balling, some sort of TGIF song, and particular, it’s an ode to Yahoo. Yahooze was one of those few songs that were about the infamous act, then. (The video was a top-notch visuals.) “$1m ? Elo lo ma je t a a ba se si Naira ? Owo,” which translates to “How much will $1m be, when converted into Naira?” This spread out rumours on Olu being a yahoo boy, and that he actually got $1m. Some still refer to that, when they cite how unserious he got with the music, after that Yahooze. That is, he’s not living off music.

Olu Maintain, now 45, wasn’t doper than everybody then, but his “relatability” gave him an edge over other pop artists who only talked about love and how hot they were.
His major effort after the Yahooze-Era in 2007/2008, was 2015’s “Cinderella,” which featured Legendary 2Baba. A song that samples Sir Victor Uwaifo’s hit, “Guitar Boy.”

Today, he might not be one of those that are contending for Greatest Of All Time, but his “Yahooze” album remains a classic. Like Yung6ix sang on Respeck On My Name : “People rise and people fall.” But y’all remember there was a man called Olu Maintain who broke all the rules!

Probably ’cause of the charts, Awards, ratings, money, views, and all that. But, you can’t ignore the fact that whoever gets the G.O.A.T title is beating Modenine to it. Just how relevant the man is to the culture.

The Yoruba MC is a very intelligent rapper, whose lyricism is the core point of his game. He also has that dexterity in his flow that makes him one of the hardest in the game. While you may know him for a couple of songs (Death Blow, Cry, Elbow Room etc), you may know him better as the rapper that kept taking the “Lyricist On The Roll” plaque at The Headies. At a time, he had to ask if there was no other person.

You may, however, know him best as the man that murdered Rugged Man, in that epic beef, which led to the biggest beef song, in Nigeria’s hip hop history. He literally murdered Ruggedy, and in that sense got compared to the Almighty Nas.

Whichever way you know him better, the truth is, Mode9 is one of the greatest rappers

You may, however, know him best as the man that murdered Rugged Man, in that epic beef, which led to the biggest beef song, in Nigeria’s hip hop history. He literally murdered Ruggedy, and in that sense got compared to the Almighty Nas.

Whichever way you know him better, the truth is, Mode9 is one of the greatest rappers to ever grab a microphone. And, the best in Africa, in terms of rap skills. The Nas comparison ain’t over-hype!

He came onto the scene, first as part of the hip-hop group SWAT Roots, prominent in the early 2000s. He hit limelight, as a solo act, with his 2006 single “Elbow Room,” which made him a name, amongst hip hop heads. It’s considered Naija hip-hop’s most lyrical till date. His single, “Cry” also off his debut album; “E’ Pluribus Unum,” put him in the mainstream, even with the deep content of the song. His peak might have been shorter if not for the beef with Rugged Man, which got everyone talking. However, Ruggedy Baba was getting all the spotlight, with a whole album taking shots at him.

Although Nigerians have succeeded in sending the 41-year-old rapper packing from the industry, he’ll forever be idolized in Nigeria’s hip-hop. He already said he’s done putting out albums in Nigeria.

Whether he’s your favourite rapper, or not, Modenine remains a relevant part of Nigerian hip-hop. And the history won’t be complete without him. You can only forget him, you can never ever evict him from the history!

J Martins silently rose from being just a “local” highlife singer, to becoming a “pan-African” artist, embracing the whole of Africa, penetrating into the depths and taking over, country by country. And slowly, he became a household name, all over Africa. What makes it very interesting is, he ain’t even a pop artist, as he does what has been often tagged Urban Highlife.

While his last effort, “Authentic” (his fourth studio album), might not be as big as some albums released by veterans, lately, it is actually authentic, and on it the Abia-native puts on the whole of Africa (once again). With collaborations with artists, far and wide. There was Ycee, Vector, Koffi, Phyno, Ferre Gola, Waje, Zoro and DJ Arafat. Showing just how good J. Martins is at collabos, and Embracing Africa. Songs like “Ekelebe,” “Ikwusigo” and “Dance 4 Me,” still made waves, that year, anyway.

Born Martins Okechukwu Joshua, the 40-year-old is a veteran, and although he’s been popular before then, he got serious with this music thing with his 2008 debut, “Get Serious,” which spun many hits including his popular “Good Or Bad.” That album announced him, and made everyone take him serious.

In his decade-long professional career, he’s made a number of hits, including “Oyoyo,” “Cool Temper,” “Jukpa” and “Good Or Bad.” And even tho’ Wizkid‘s number of hits might dwarf his, his impact on the music scene, and the pop culture can’t be overlooked.

History will have it that, long before there was Adekunle Gold, there was an Igbo man who did urban highlife. And above all embraced the African heritage (before Yemi Alade was Mama Afrique). He is a UN Ambassador for peace, too. His name, J. Martins!

Today’s Throwback would be when music held meaningful content in Nigeria. A lot of artist in the 80s and 90s achieved this feat but our pick for today is the dancer of life- Mike Okri.

Mike is one artist I really loved in my childhood days. His ‘dodo ati rice’ track never failed to tickle my mumu button. I was mostly placated by my dad with this song. Mike was undoubtedly one of the hottest musicians that bestrode the musical turf since his debut LP ‘Concert Fever’ in 1988. At the peak of his career, he was also one of the highest paid acts in the land.

In the mid-90s the music world in Nigeria began to go through a significant transitioning and Mike Okri was one of the musicians whose musical fortune changed. As a result of this, he decided to relocate to the United States of America. Which is what most artists did at the time.

Mike didn’t bath in gold when he got to America as opposed to what many people thought, rumours soon began to circulate as to the real nature of business the Urhobo born musician was into. While some said he was a janitor at some super market, others claimed he was doing odd jobs to survive.

The legend however responded to the speculations, speaking on the reason he moved to the States from his California base, the singer said “It’s hard to say in one single word why I left but in my own words, I’m here in the States because God wanted me to [be]. Nigeria is strongly on my mind and I will be home soon but I’m preparing to do it right so others could benefit immensely. I’m overwhelmed with shows here, including book & music projects, not to mention school (he refused to comment further on his school details). [I have] been a busy bee and I thank God for that.” He also had a few words for fans who have been eagerly awaiting something new. “I will be releasing my comeback album soon, which will be a gospel one, while the next one will be inspirational. That is going to be my new style of keeping my fans around the globe busy when the time comes.”

But by the 2000s, Mike made a surprise appearance in a musical video alongside Sauce Kid. The legend has also been respected by younger folks who perform some of his songs on large music platforms e.g MTN Project Fame West Africa.
