The singer discussed the experience during an interview with Nadeska on Apple Music’s The Nadeska Show, where he reflected on some of the personal situations that influenced his latest project, Still In Charge.

According to BNXN, several months after Captain dropped in July 2025, he discovered things about people within his inner circle that made him rethink those relationships.

“Months after I dropped Captain, you know, I had close friends that I had to detach from or kind of sever the relationships mainly because I discovered some things that were just not right.”

While he did not reveal who the people were or explain exactly what he discovered, BNXN said cutting those ties was ultimately about protecting his future.

“It was important that I had to sever those ties because it could have really cost me and my career like in the long run.”

The experience also changed the way the singer approaches trust and relationships. BNXN encouraged people to pay closer attention to their instincts, especially when dealing with those they consider close friends.

“It’s just important to really take time and pay attention to what your subconscious tells you, especially when it comes to, like, dealing with people and dealing with, like, you know, people that you really consider friends or people that you really trust.”

His personal challenges were not limited to his relationships. BNXN also recalled a period when he found himself without a management team despite being one of Nigeria’s most-streamed artists.

He described the situation as a strange position to be in, especially considering the level he believed he had reached professionally.

“Top eight streaming artistes in Nigeria and, you know, at this point I don’t have no management, I don’t have no team, and it’s like, what are you going to do?”

BNXN did not specify the streaming platform or the exact period connected to the ranking, but the situation clearly forced him to reassess how he was handling his career.

He also spoke about the challenge of maintaining confidence when things aren’t going smoothly behind the scenes, despite having success to point to.

“And then it kicks in, like you said, in the bad days, how do you remind yourself that you’re this guy?”

That period eventually pushed BNXN to take control and begin putting the different parts of his career back together. He linked that restructuring process directly to the creation of Still In Charge.

“I start to restructure, try to get everything in one, in one bit. And that’s where the whole process of Still In Charge starts coming up.”

For BNXN, Still In Charge therefore represents more than another musical release. The project grew out of a period of personal reassessment, difficult decisions and rebuilding as he worked to regain control of both his career and his inner circle.

Spotify brought fans closer to Tems and Runtown across two nights of Surround Sound in Lagos, inviting selected Premium listeners based on their listening behavior to experience the artists and music they care about in an intimate, in-the-round setting.

Held at Livespot in Lagos on 25 and 26 September, the performances brought two distinct catalogue stories into the room. Tems revisited For Broken Ears, while Runtown placed Mad Over You at the centre of a career-spanning set.

Surround Sound is Spotify’s live performance format, launched from Sub-Saharan Africa, which brings artists and fans together at close range and captures those performances as full-length music films for Spotify. Lagos provides the cultural context for these stories, with Nigerian artists and listeners at their centre.

• Tems: revisiting the music, together

Tems performed For Broken Ears tracks including Ice T and Damages, alongside earlier singles Mr Rebel and Try Me and later material such as Love Me JeJe and What You Need, tracing different chapters of her catalogue.

Ahead of the performance, she reflected on the beginnings of that journey: “I remember making Free Mind on my bed, on my laptop, experimenting with chords and seeing what stuck. The first two chords sounded so good, and it ignited melodies in me. Those melodies I made on my bed are what is in the song right now.”

Spotify’s relationship with Tems also reaches back to that period. In September 2020, shortly after the release of For Broken Ears, she became the third artist to join Spotify’s RADAR Africa program, following South African singer Elaine and rapper Willy Cardiac. Six years later, Surround Sound revisited that early chapter of her catalogue in Lagos.

During the performance, Tems turned towards the audience and invited them to sing along, making the fans’ voices part of the experience. For attendee @tmdmrv, Burning was a standout moment.

“Tems’ performance of Burning at Surround Sound is forever imprinted in my heart,” the attendee wrote on X. “That touched me.”

• Runtown: a familiar song, a shared moment

The following night, Runtown opened with Lagos to Kampala and Gallardo, moving through For Life, International Badman Killa and Unleash. The set also included Kini Issue, drawing together different parts of his catalogue.

Mad Over You became a shared moment between artist and audience. Runtown performed the song during the set before returning to it a second time to close the show, with fans singing along.

Speaking ahead of the performance, Runtown said: “This is the first time in 10 years I am performing with my band, and I am looking forward to seeing my fans.”

For attendee @wysdavidd, that closing performance of Mad Over You was the moment that stayed with them.

“When Runtown came back and performed it for the second time to close out the show, it meant something to me,” the attendee wrote on X.

• From listening to being in the room

Spotify’s September 2026 analysis offers context for the continuing relationship with this music. Of the listeners who played For Broken Ears in January 2022, 21.6% also listened in August 2026. Meanwhile, Mad Over You appeared in more than three million user-created playlists at the time of the analysis.

Surround Sound connected that existing relationship with an opportunity to experience the artists live. There was no public ticket sale; Spotify invited selected Premium listeners directly through the platform, using listening behaviour to identify fans for the experience.

“The live room is intentionally intimate and has a fixed capacity,” said Rifumo Mdaka of Spotify. “We use listening signals to reach selected Spotify Premium listeners in Lagos directly rather than running a public ticket sale. The aim is to create a close artist-fan experience while keeping the room suitable for the performance and film capture.”

Across both nights, Premium’s fan value took a tangible form: selected listeners had the opportunity to hear familiar music performed up close, with the audience’s responses becoming part of the experience.

Both performances were filmed for Spotify. Surround Sound presents Tems and Surround Sound presents Runtown will extend those Lagos moments beyond the room, giving audiences elsewhere another way to experience the music. Release dates will be announced closer to launch.’
